Favorite Contender to Never win a world title...
Over the years we have had some damn good fighters who for some reason or another never won a world title...Some because they were caught in the wrong Era...Others who were caught in the wrong division...ECT..
Anyone got a favorite that has fallen into this catagory?
The guy for me is Jerry Quarry....He lost a lot by KO and bled like triage room at the local ER but man he was tough and went at it with the best of them...At times to brave for his own good an later in life it cost him his health but his courage is un deniable...
He fought everyone from Eddie Machon, Floyd Ptterson, Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers, Ali, Frazier, Ken Norton, George Chuvalo..
Yes he lost many of the big fights he was in...More than less but look at who he fought...He was in the greatest ERA for heavyweights ever....
Any other era IMO Jerry would have been champion...Hell if cruiserweight was around back then he would have dominated

Oh yeah - good call - you're right.
I forgot he had the WBC title awarded to him, but then Holmes took it from him in that good fight.

Re: Favorite Contender to Never win a world title...
tommy morrison was a hell of a contender. and at the time the WBO title wasn't as much of a recognised title as it is now but i dunno if that answer counts.
omah sheika is another good contender that springs to mind

Quarry was my first thought exactly. I would add Chuvalo to that...talk about a guy with a chin. After Chuvalo lost to Ali, he went dancing with his wife. Ali went to the hospital.

"Quick" Tillis!! I forgot about him! You got that one right. Not the best, but areat job against Tyson. A poor man's Larry Holmes. I liked that guy. The Tillis v Tyson fight is always my argument is the recurring Holmes v Tyson debate.

Yeah I agree %100 on that...George was a tough SOB you know even with all the punches he took he never had any lasting effects after he retired....Other than a battle worn face you would never know he was an ex fighter who had such wars

I'll hold my hands up and admit to the error about Norton (just forgot :-[), but I meant Conn at heavyweight. If Louis hadn't been around, he would have been the champ for sure.

Re: Favorite Contender to Never win a world title...
Oscar Bonovena was pretty exciting, put Joe Frazier down and like Quarry fought all of the best.
Did Jimmy Ellis ever become champ?
I know he eventually won a title but I consider Frank Bruno to be the best man never to win a world title.
He was such a lovable loser in that peculiarly British way, I feel like Jimmy White in snooker Bruno was destined to be British boxing's nearly man.
Then he went and beat McCall and shot his legacy to pieces :P

Yeah what an epic passing of the torch in that fight huh... Bruno hanging on for dear life through the championship rounds, practically crying as his hand was raised.

Yeah he would have....He shook the hell out of a prime Joe Louis....I may be mistaken but didn't he drop Joe in one of those fights
?...Can't remember if they fought once or twice?

Conn stunk it up in the second fight, but he owned Joe in the first until he decided that he could knock him out. I can't remember if he put Joe down, but Billy totally had him rocked the round before Joe came back and got him. That was the problem. He wanted to finish the job and gave Louis the opening.

Re: Favorite Contender to Never win a world title...
Ron Lyle, cause he was also a pimp..... O0
-
Re: Favorite Contender to Never win a world title...
Oba Carr. Trinidad took his 0. Quartey punished him for 12 rounds. And De La Hoya ended him as a contender.

I saw him kickboxing after he retired from boxing....Was beating the hell out of guys for a while...Just smothering them then punching the crap out of them in close...He would just throw the minimum required kicks per round...Think he won a title of some sort....
As for the other things you guys are both right...
Ice---he was a tough SOB who could take a shot....Good thing too....Cause like VD said he had NO skills lol.....
Hell the guy has to of have been in at least 30 movies too

Re: Favorite Contender to Never win a world title...
Ben “ Wonder” Tackie
I am a huge fan of this fighter , He is so exciting to watch in the ring, has so much heart and determination factor is high , yet he has never been able to win a major world title, Tackie is one of the most exciting fighters in boxing today, and unfortunately over shadowed by other fighters, I love to watch Ben Tackie fight, will give any opponent one hell of a fight ! Very pleasing style to watch !

I always liked Ray, the Augustus fight was sad to watch. You saw him put his arm behind his head and he looked concerned, then he drove Augustus into the corner and ripped a flurry kind of as a last gasp, and then the arm back behind the head. Watching that fight after the fact, when you knew that was it, it was kind of a sad moment, cause he knew something was wrong, and then went all out with that combo, then grabbed the back of his head and you knew that was it. Hope he doesn't fight again and stays healthy. For some reason I've always liked the guys that knew they couldn't knock a guy out with one punch so just decided to work and work and work.
Always been a big fan of Augustus too, some people see him as a clown, the man is tough, just watch the Ward fight. And watch the
Oliveira fight where he throws nothing but body shots after Ray starts grabbing the back of his head. Not a single head shot.

Excellent post.. in particular the part about Augustus not throwing anymore heads shots ! I remember that. excellent sportsmanship . sometimes you can tell when your opponent is in serious troubles . and its always the fighters that can take the shots, the guys that can't take a punch dont have to worry about them , they are out cold before they get seriously hurt. but the guys that just keep standing and wont go down , these guys are real vulnerable to debilitating injury when they are rocked. .. I can tell you I can't help but to try and avoid seriously hurting someone when I know they are in troubles. even if there is bad blood . You look at the ref like , what the fuck you waiting for ? your corner will ream your ass for it. but man who wants to kill someone? Not I !
