Mayweather: 'Ricky Hatton fight will never happen!'
By James Slater in Las Vegas:
I was at Floyd Mayweather's gym of choice, Barry's Boxing, just off the strip in Las Vegas yesterday, and after an impromptu workout by "Pretty Boy" in which he jumped rope and shadow boxed, I managed to grab a few words with the pound-for-pound great. Here are some of the things Floyd had to say.
"First of all, I'm concentrating on Carlos Baldomir. It should be a great fight and it's a great match-up. He may be bigger than me, he may be stronger, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll punch harder. My knockout ratio is actually better than his. But I'm really looking forward to this fight. I take each fight as if it's my last one. I'm probably at my peak now, I feel faster, stronger and more smart. You have to be smart in this sport, if I'd have fought every fight toe-to-toe I wouldn't be able to give you guys this interview now. Boxing is about not taking punishment but giving it."
Floyd then fielded questions from the media on a variety of subjects. Two of the most interesting ones concerned "The Golden Boy", Oscar De La Hoya, and Britain's own pound-for-pound entrant Ricky Hatton. This is what he had to say on these two prospective opponents.
"I respect what Oscar's done in the sport. No doubt he's been a fine fighter but to me a lot of his opponents were hand-picked. Camacho was over the hill, Pernell Whittaker was past his best yet he still beat him, although it wasn't official. I feel as though a lot of guys beat De La Hoya but it wasn't made official. I plan on making it so. Yeah, the fight is an attractive one but right now, like I said, I'm focusing on Baldomir. But I'm here to clean up the sport. By that I mean to face every possible deserving opponent and clean 'em up."
At this point the name Ricky Hatton was brought up. Floyd wasn't impressed.
"Ricky Hatton don't want to fight me. If he did why is he going back down to 140? Why also did he ask for $13 million, when his previous best purse was only $3million? Ricky should stay back in England fighting wrestlers that are hand-picked. As long as he does that he'll stay undefeated."
When asked if he didn't respect any of Hatton's wins, Floyd responded in the negative.
"Hatton's a wrestler, even when he fought Kostya Tszyu it was a wrestling match. Why does he want to fight me for $13 million when he struggled with a journeyman last time out? And why should I go to England? This is America, I'm the champ, if he wants the fight he has to come here but Ricky Hatton doesn't want to fight me. As I say though I'm looking forward to fighting Baldomir on Saturday, and I want to put a good show on for all you guys."
After speaking with the media, Floyd headed for the scales, where, curtained by his huge minders so as to weigh-in in privacy, Mayweather checked his poundage. Despite the secrecy of the visit to the scales, however, this reporter managed to overhear Floyd's consternation regarding what he tipped in at. Floyd was angry and dismayed that despite the fact that he ate, "a whole bunch of food last night," he only weighed 145 pounds. "Pretty Boy" didn't like the fact that he was so low. Does this indicate an advantage for the huge welterweight, Carlos Baldomir? Carlos, as all fans know routinely walks around at 175-180, yet always makes 147 comfortably. There is little doubt that Mayweather holds all the aces in the skills department but this recent revelation regarding his weight just might indicate that Baldomir is not the complete no-hoper many experts think he is. Friday's official weigh-in will be very interesting indeed.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________________
Let me ask this: Who has the advantage here...A guy that has to cut 50lbs to make weight...Or a guy that walks around at the fight limit or a tad below...
Floyd is always in impeccable shape his stamina is unreal and he is cut and muscular...
I would say Floyd fare better since his engine is running at its optimal level..He dosent have to starve himself and cause his body to go Catabolic (eat muscle and tap into stored glycogen for energy)
it should be business as usual for Floyd when he steps in the ring, Not like Baldo who has to starve himself for 3 days to make weight...Which worries me cutting 50 or so lbs is HUGE especially as you get older and metabolism slows.. That has to start taking its toll and we have seen fighters who have gotten real old in a matter of 3-4 rounds from being weight drained
Look at Corralles and Castillo. Recently trying to lose those last few pounds was impossible and look at the toll it took on Diego..

Re: Mayweather: 'Ricky Hatton fight will never happen!'
Floyd is a nob.
He will win this fight...but against who exactly...
Hatton will take him to the limits

Well... there is some truth there...

Re: Mayweather: 'Ricky Hatton fight will never happen!'
Floyd should just bulk up to heavyweight and become the first boxer ever to have titles spanning that many divisions. Atleast then there'd be some talent in the division. :) (not serious face)
-
Re: Mayweather: 'Ricky Hatton fight will never happen!'
come on carlos rough him up. i would like to see how floyd would have coped with hatton on the night he beat tszyu. ricky would have been all over floyd like a rash with that 'wrestling' style.
-
Re: Mayweather: 'Ricky Hatton fight will never happen!'
Hmmm, in answer to your question mate, and after carefull thought, i would have to say........... Baldomir.
Now granted Floyd is going into the fight not far off his walk around weight, which as you point out, should not affect his stamina throughout the fight. But for me the naturally bigger guy, Baldi, will have so much more of a dig on him than possibly Floyd is prepared for. Granted Baldi is boiling down, but to be fair most boxers have to. It's part of the game. The only reason Floyd doesn't have to is because he is not a natural welter.
Floyd is wanting to use his ring smarts, his speed, his footwork, to get through this fight, which is fair enough.
But Floyd is going in with the biggest guy ( naturally ) he has yet to face in the ring. Now ya cannot tell me Floyd ain't gonna get hit in this fight?, he will and when he does, then you will see Floyd use his footwok, to be fair if the was a bike handy he would get on it and be off.
But, thats just my opinion ;)
In regards to what he said about Oscar handpicking his opponents, well,......... what a load of poo. It is soooooo contradictory it's unbelievable :o

Re: Mayweather: 'Ricky Hatton fight will never happen!'
Wait until this weekend brothers and sisters. PBF may himself gracefull duck out of the large 147 class. Also disappointing PPV sales will dictate who PBF fights more than ever. Lots of people want to see the Hatton fight. As soon as PBF eats some humble pie I think we may see it.

Hmmm a jounreyman world champion??? Sound a bit familair floyd? He needs to look at who he's fighting on Saturday night first. Until floyd shows me that he can overcome the odds and win a fight when he's a massive inderdog, i;ll still back hatton to push flyd to the limit.

CC, Exactly I would NOT handicap him as the underdog against anyone up to 154 ATM, things may of course change, but............that's the way I see it right now.
This going at it with a scientific approach, not a biased one.

Hmm... shouldn't sound familiar.. since he's fighting the undisputed champion and not a belt holder ;)

Well make an prediction once youve seen both fighters!!
you cant say hatton would get ko'd in less then ten without even seeing them both?
and how would this even come about? thats not even an accurate observation of how a fight between them would go..
and wayweather is scared if you ask me.. he always gets shirty when you ask him about hatton
oh why did hatton move back down... hatton was never supposed to move up...
more to the point why did floyd move up without beating the real champ at 140?
instead he fought sharba mitchell ... hardly a contest..
and to be honest i bet hatton asked 13 mil dollars which is around 7/8 mil pounds!
and thats nothing compared to what the fight will generate!! mayweather could make de la hoya money on this fight!!
and hatton has already stated he would only move up to welter for floyd and floyd only!
mayweather needs to get his ass in gear and make that fight before bitching about it!!

Re: Mayweather: 'Ricky Hatton fight will never happen!'

yeh bro u know!!
i love to watch floyd fight , but hes so fucking arrogant mann...
hes made millions already, the least he could do is fight some bad motherfuckers to back up his bad motherfucking words and secure a legacy instead of talking his way into a supposed legacy!
if he had have fought people that had more of a chance against his great skill maybe hed have been smacked up good or even lost a fight and then he'd be fighting anyone, im not sure its the fighters he fears.. i think its the risk of a fighter that has good odds of beating him and he is looking after that unbeaten record like its his child! lol
peace

Re: Mayweather: 'Ricky Hatton fight will never happen!'
The one biggest truth in the article people seem to be overlooking, is that Hatton really doesn't want the fight. See if he ever makes any noise about it again, or say's hell move up to 147... He's fighting Urango who lost his last fight to a journeyman, and talking about Castillo as his dream opponent. Will he ask for 13 million in that fight too ::** I know Mayweather is a cocky little shit, but he's a phenomenal talent and his work ethic is the best in the game. Watch him put on a clinic on saturday.

Hey well, Most are talking like Baldo is this hard ass Duran type of fighter(I dont believe it)...Plus Baldo is the Linear and universally recognized Welterweight champ...Not a belt holder but WELTERWEIGHT CHAMP....So how can you hate Floyd for fighting the current division best fighter...
I personally think Floyds gonna tear him a new asshole but,I dont know what the hell is gonna please the Mayweather scrutunizers :dontknow:
-
Re: Mayweather: 'Ricky Hatton fight will never happen!'
What would PBF gain from fighting Hatton at this point other than satisfying some viewers in the UK?
He has already had a Light Welterweight belt, He has been offered bigger paydays. Just get over it, it's not gonna happen. You should be concerned with how Hatton is gonna take his first loss at the hands of Castillo.

no doubt he will.... but hatton castillo is not hatton mayweather, the money in that fight would be out of this world! everybody wants a piece of that fight!.. i wouldnt doubt that they could easily have 13 mil each!! but for floyd it isnt even about the money... its about the percentage!! if floyd made 70 mil for the fight... and ricky was asking they go 40 60 on the fight..floyd wouldnt take it... for him its what shows how much bigger he feels then the rest!... (obv not happenin but lets jus say)
i mean think about it... if ricky wanted that much... then how the f much would floyd make...
i'd bet it would be more!! put with some other great fights that need to be made that could be a bigazz ppv!!

JT .... i dont mean to confuse anybody.. or get it twisted in any way..
i am dissing floyd in a way... but im not a floyd hater, not a scrutinizer .. im a big pbf fan....
its just true ... fair play ive been telling people this is the biggest test and the fight he needed since he fought castillo which was the only one that his opponent had a chance in, they have all been great fighters in theyr own right, but apart from castillo and maybe baldo ( for me.. not for everyone else)

and yet i myself am impressed that floyd is taking baldomir ... in a way im not hating... by fighting for carlos... im giving floyd his props, everyone is looking over the fight like he'll tear him a new face etc...
but give baldo his props he deserves to be in there with floyd... and he'll come to fight and he does have a chance! but loads of people are dissmissing carlos but they just dont know... at the same time theyr saying floyd is fighting another easy fight or technically fighting a bum....
ive not said floyd cant win... ive said he will win.... but he can loose.. the chance is there for carlos
hes got what it takes if he wants it that bad!!
ive said ten times its up to floyd, if floyd slips up carlos will take his chances...
so floyd just best not slip up, or if he does it better not be big!
floyd can outbox and outslick baldomir with one eye... but if he thinks he can do it with his eyes closed
he'll get beaten on!! also i jus cant wait till the fight, i want to see how much power floyd really has at welter!

I'd have to go above 147 and say De La Hoya.

Re: Mayweather: 'Ricky Hatton fight will never happen!'
I would love to see Hatton - Mayweather fight.. it would be a fantastic watch. fabulous match-up , Mayweather is concerned about the physicality’s that Hatton brings, Mayweather does not want to take a chance on getting man handled in the ring, he might actually get hit and molested in there. Mayweather is looking for a slower paced opponent that he can dictate and look sharp with.. Mayweather is very smart fighter / business man . He is only going to take those High Risk fights when that money is Mega - Millions aka Dela Hoya.. He is only calling out Dela Hoya cause the Green Pastures are lushes . Multi Millions to be made by both Oscar and Floyd hence the Risk / Reward ratio… Oscar would likely hand Mayweather his first loss, and Floyd realizes this is a distinct possibility, but money speaks volumes .

lol i dont hate on floyd.. im not a hater i just criticize some points about him lol :P
i dont believe atall that there is no demand for hatton vs floyd in the us... and if there were none then one.. why is it creeping into our conversation.. and two why are espn and all the boxing reporters asking floyd about the fight... why cant floyd string a sentance or why does he get mad when hatton is mentioned....
yeh he had a light welter title belt so he can say he was a titlist at lww... but he wasnt the champ.. he won the title dropped by the champ, and hatton fought the champ for the ibf title! and so became the champ...
and it concerns me how much floyd is motivated by money... his legacy is ten times more important then his paydays, im sure theres a big ass pay day for the hatton fight anyway!
and as far as castillo goes.. its a different matter , both hatton and castillo are real men they wana fight.. the fight is nearly a done deal and its a dangerous fight for an undefeated hatton..
theres less to loose for castillo he doesnt have the perfect record...
niether are untouchable .. castillo doesnt have a perfect rec, and hatton has vulnerabilities..
i just know its a great fight that will define them both, and apart from the numbers on your record.. neither fighter can lose out, they are just two tough bastards that will come to fight and one may win one may loose but it'll be a hell of a fight and a show and may the best man win...
i wouldnt say who wins but i'll be rooting for my boy hatton!

Fair enough.....I just feel when you at the top that heavy scrutiny is the price to pay....I feel if Floyd go's on to fight great fights he will still recieve alot of negativity
He probably wont recieve credit from his critics till 10 years after he retires

Re: Mayweather: 'Ricky Hatton fight will never happen!'
Dont get me wrong im a big Hatton fan, with a heart and attitiude like his its hard not to be,but seriously now boys,Pretty Boy would destroy the Hitman. Get past the all the trash talking and personal prejudices, and no matter how much it might pain you to say it Floyd has got serious skills. My feelings are based purely on the Hatton/Collazo fight, if Hatton goes anywhere near PBF in the same manner he did Collazo i.e. chin first, fists swinging(and lets face it, thats the only style he knows) PBF will have him on the canvas in under 6 and out by 8.
-
Re: Mayweather: 'Ricky Hatton fight will never happen!'
great article....cc bro.....The fact that PBF is always around fighting weight is a huge advantage....I think too many fighters are fighting at weights that are just unrealistic for them...a 180lb man getting down to 168 or even 160 is understandable.....but down to 147?!? This is not intended to be...Physically the body is designed to be at the heavier weight...the drastic weightloss causes water and fluids to become drained out of areas that should never be drained (The Brain)...this is extreemly dangerous and boxing needs to weigh the fighters more often to ensure there are not as many of these situations coming to light....I know they have started to weight-in earlier to help with the replenishment of fluids..but these fluids never make it to the brain in such a short time....the body is hydrated but the brain is unprotected!!! Oh, and Hatton isn't even in PBF's league.....let him ask for $4 million and see hatton disappear after the fight....would love to see him go against ODLH though....

Will he ask for 13 million in that fight too ::** I know Mayweather is a cocky little S***, but he's a phenomenal talent and his work ethic is the best in the game. Watch him put on a clinic on saturday.
no doubt he will.... but hatton castillo is not hatton mayweather, the money in that fight would be out of this world! everybody wants a piece of that fight!.. i wouldnt doubt that they could easily have 13 mil each!! but for floyd it isnt even about the money... its about the percentage!! if floyd made 70 mil for the fight... and ricky was asking they go 40 60 on the fight..floyd wouldnt take it... for him its what shows how much bigger he feels then the rest!... (obv not happenin but lets jus say)
i mean think about it... if ricky wanted that much... then how the f much would floyd make...
i'd bet it would be more!! put with some other great fights that need to be made that could be a bigazz ppv!!

yeh bro u know!!
i love to watch floyd fight , but hes so F****** arrogant mann...
hes made millions already, the least he could do is fight some bad motherfuckers to back up his bad motherfucking words and secure a legacy instead of talking his way into a supposed legacy!
if he had have fought people that had more of a chance against his great skill maybe hed have been smacked up good or even lost a fight and then he'd be fighting anyone, im not sure its the fighters he fears.. i think its the risk of a fighter that has good odds of beating him and he is looking after that unbeaten record like its his child! lol
peace
Hey well, Most are talking like Baldo is this hard a** Duran type of fighter(I dont believe it)...Plus Baldo is the Linear and universally recognized Welterweight champ...Not a belt holder but WELTERWEIGHT CHAMP....So how can you hate Floyd for fighting the current division best fighter...
I personally think Floyds gonna tear him a new asshole but,I dont know what the hell is gonna please the Mayweather scrutunizers :dontknow:
JT .... i dont mean to confuse anybody.. or get it twisted in any way..
i am dissing floyd in a way... but im not a floyd hater, not a scrutinizer .. im a big pbf fan....
its just true ... fair play ive been telling people this is the biggest test and the fight he needed since he fought castillo which was the only one that his opponent had a chance in, they have all been great fighters in theyr own right, but apart from castillo and maybe baldo ( for me.. not for everyone else)
who could you have even seen floyd beat... hes never been against the odds!
he has fought two paper champions for his titles in these divisions... and he looked spectacular not dissing his performances.... but would you have even bet a penny that zab or especially gatti could beat floyd?
and yet i myself am impressed that floyd is taking baldomir ... in a way im not hating... by fighting for carlos... im giving floyd his props, everyone is looking over the fight like he'll tear him a new face etc...
but give baldo his props he deserves to be in there with floyd... and he'll come to fight and he does have a chance! but loads of people are dissmissing carlos but they just dont know... at the same time theyr saying floyd is fighting another easy fight or technically fighting a bum....
ive not said floyd cant win... ive said he will win.... but he can loose.. the chance is there for carlos
hes got what it takes if he wants it that bad!!
ive said ten times its up to floyd, if floyd slips up carlos will take his chances...
so floyd just best not slip up, or if he does it better not be big!
floyd can outbox and outslick baldomir with one eye... but if he thinks he can do it with his eyes closed
he'll get beaten on!! also i jus cant wait till the fight, i want to see how much power floyd really has at welter!
peace
Fair enough.....I just feel when you at the top that heavy scrutiny is the price to pay....I feel if Floyd go's on to fight great fights he will still recieve alot of negativity
He probably wont recieve credit from his critics till 10 years after he retires
Fighters are always appreciated more after they retire.. especially if floyd manages to retire undefeated, and its looking that way right now..
look at bhop he even stated before he retired that when im gone i think i'll be appreciated more for what ive done..
and since he retired or since he was knocked off the perch by jermaine ive known a fair few people give him the credit that he has deserved where it has been due...
i think floyd will get his....
i dunno if he'll get it the same unless he grows humble at an older age... the guy is either just under or just turned thirty and he has the confidence and arrogance of a 19 year old lol
peace

Re: Mayweather: 'Ricky Hatton fight will never happen!'
Jesus Chavez and Carlos Hernandez both tried that "be all over Mayweather" attack. It didn't work for them. It won't work for Hatton. Mayweather in 9, if they ever fought.

Well... there is some truth there...
I fell kind of the same way

Hard to say. If Baldo has been doing this pretty much his entire career...then based on his last two fights...I'd say him.
Honestly...I think that the weight issue will arise for my guy (Floyd) but I think that he can over come it.
Baldo, IWO, will give Floyd a fight. I think that we all (Floyd fans) will be surprised...hence the reason that I am prepping me-self. I think that the fact that he TKO'd Gatti & the fact that he went toe to toe with Judah speaks quite a lot.
If Floyd pulls his usual 4 round feeling out plan then Baldo has a chance...& Floyd will do so. It's the way he works. Replay all of his old fights. Floyd always feels the opponent out for 4-5 rounds...no matter what.
This is Baldo's opportunity to press Floyd to a point that he is out of his comfort zone.
I still think that Floyd will over come though.

Agreed...but he's waaaaaaaaaay outside of his weight class. I personally think that Floyd belongs @ 140lbs. I always have & I always will.

it should be business as usual for Floyd when he steps in the ring, Not like Baldo who has to starve himself for 3 days to make weight...Which worries me cutting 50 or so lbs is HUGE especially as you get older and metabolism slows.. That has to start taking its toll and we have seen fighters who have gotten real old in a matter of 3-4 rounds from being weight drained
Again...this is something that Baldo does all the time according to press.
Whether or not it's a "don't believe everything that you read" scenario remains to be seen.

Agreed. Also...what is a bit more settling is to look at how Floyd did in those three fights (Corrales, Castillo I & II) & compare them to Baldo. Again...the weight is an issue...but the fact that Corrales & Castillo are knock out are-teests & Baldo is not...well...for lack of better words...it gives a Floyd fan confidence.

Floyd has all the talent in the world, but he really is an arrogant and most unlikeable fellow...

I was indeed being the nob with my original posting! :-\
Baldomir is a very solid welterweight so perhaps it wont be a walk in the park. But then again, both Gatti and Zab have their obvious flaws. Floyd doesnt. It may very well be a shut out. Its a tricky fight to judge really.
I still maintain that if Floyd ever goes gets in the ring with Hatton then fireworks are the order of the day. A real superfight. Hatton can beat him.

Do you wanna see a crappy boxer that goes to church every sunday and does what he can to help people out or do you wanna see a good boxer and not care about how cocky or self centered he is? He gets paid to win and look good doing it, not for being good to everyone else.

Floyd is a great boxer, I know this and have said it. Still, he is a twat and has picked his opponents very selectively for a long time.
I wanna see a good boxer who fights nothing but the best and doesnt talk shite about being better than SRL whilst doing so...
Going to church is more an ecumenical matter and im just not going there...

He has already had a Light Welterweight belt, He has been offered bigger paydays. Just get over it, it's not gonna happen. You should be concerned with how Hatton is gonna take his first loss at the hands of Castillo.
If he stayed at 140 (who cares if he had one belt?) and beat Hatton, after Hatton beat Kostya, that would probably have earned him a lot more respect than moving up up and away to 147 to fight easy fights. Oh yeah and to accuse other fighters like ODLH of having hand picked opposition............what a F****** cock!!
He is full of S*** just like you.
Oh yeah, and if Castillo beats Ricky I will be surprised. At least he will actually be awarded the win though if he does and not totally fucking robbed.

Hmm... shouldn't sound familiar.. since he's fighting the undisputed champion and not a belt holder ;)
Belts dont mean anything. This guy has 9 losses, so if floyd beats him he only achieves what another 9 guys have already done before him. What titles are on the line tonight starr?

Re: Mayweather: 'Ricky Hatton fight will never happen!'
CC for the read JT. Very good read. I agree,Hatton is not going to make anywhere near $13million in USA,maybe in the UK he would make that equivalent but lil Floyd is not going to take that route is he? As for Floyd being cocky, although at times he comes out with piles of BS,I think I can overlook it considering what a joy he is to watch in the ring. I expect another boxing clinic tonight.
I agree and disagree with his statments about Oscar. The Goldenboy has been AWESOME for boxing in my opinion but as a fighter,he's bene up and down. He has beaten over the hill guys,he has beaten guys he should have lost to(Sturm etc) but he has been willing to fight everyone and has moved up through so many weight classes and been on the wrong end of some decisions too(Mosley fight). I believe PBF would beat him.
