Roy Jones Jr: "Watch Me and See The Master"
intresting title :)

Re: Roy Jones Jr: "Watch Me and See The Master"
Nice to see that Jones is not going to face Manfredo, or anything foolish like that, least not yet. But who is Manny Siaca? I like to think I know who the contenders are, even in the LH division right now, but I've never heard of the guy. Jones is right, at his prime or anywhere near it, he was light years ahead of Jermain Taylor, and Kassim Ouma, but he's not in his prime. Nonetheless, I think I'll probably watch the Roy Jones PPV, gotta see if Jone's comeback is for real, the Ajamu fight proved something, but not enough.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr: "Watch Me and See The Master"
Siaca shouldn't be ranked at lightheavy I don't think.. Although I have no idea who he's fought there.. He was a super middle, who was KOed by Kessler for the WBA title, which he won from Mundine(but shouldn't have, Anthony stunk the place out and still it was razor thin). Good showcase kind of fight for Roy I guess but it doesn't prove a thing, noone should buy this PPV. Watch the replay and decide how you think Roy looks, because that's the only thing this fight will offer imo.

CC. Thanks for the info on Siaca. But who's gonna replay the PPV? Isn't it another one time only, small promoter PPV like the Ajamu fight was? And besides it'll probably be like 30 bucks not 50. And the Taylor vs Ouma fight will for sure be replayed.

Re: Roy Jones Jr: "Watch Me and See The Master"
Hmmm, "Watch me and see the master" -
My immediate thought was "Has RJJ got himself a tattoo of a really good fighter?"
Or possibly a tattoo of himself at his peak some 4 or 5 years ago.
But that's the only way we'll see the master any more. Can't he just leave us with the memory of him at his very best, a true great?

Sure, but he can still make for big fights against the best now at super middle and lightheavy.. Would you really say it's impossible that Roy Jones could make a comeback and beat the likes of Thomas Adamek or someone like that? Who the hell even has any of the belts at light heavy. If he looked great in this fight, then won a title at light heavy, would you not pay to see Calzaghe move up and fight him?(I say this because he cant make anything under 175). I think he looked pretty good vs Ajamu, and although I was really, really dissapointed in his performance against Tarver in the third fight he still looked to have his physical tools, maybe the gunshy thing is something he can overcome if he trains and spars hard enough. There have been lots of great fighters to come back from KO losses, if he thinks he can do it I say good on him.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr: "Watch Me and See The Master"
Roy SHOULD change his style just a little bit like the Ajamu fight where he had his hands up more often.
And Siaca is ranked 2 at Light Heavyweight.

OK, well he does have a chance at it, but he can't go shooting for the stars anymore, he's gotta turn down his ambition a bit, and stick to fighting guys like Siaca and Manfredo Jr. I don't see him able to beat the guys like Calzaghe, Kessler, Johnson. HE could beat Tarver, or Adamek maybe, if he's willing to take a risk on them.

I guess we just disagree then.. There aren't any huge stars that he'll be shooting for, and I think he does have a good chance of beating those guys possibly at 175.. At the very least they are intriuging fights. Jones vs Kessler or Calzaghe would be bigger than anything those two will do besides face each other. Im almost positive of that. I say if he's going to stick around he may as well fight the best, because there's not a whole lot of depth at 175.

Re: Roy Jones Jr: "Watch Me and See The Master"
Jones can have only one goal, and that is to fight the best and be the best. Clearly he's not going into this with a goal of being a gatekeeper at 5th or 10th.
He may end up there, but only because the top fighters make it so.
Let him get as sharp as he can, and take God into the ring with him, and face Joe. Why not?
Sentimental old romanticist that I am, I believe in Roy and think he could beat Joe. I have the same attitude toward Holy ...
I was rooting for Mercer too when he made his comeback efforts and he did himself proud but you see where that got me in the end. Romantic follies.

Re: Roy Jones Jr: "Watch Me and See The Master"
"Watch me and see the master"? ;D
The ego in him wont let it go! He is old and is way past his best. If he couldnt even work a decision against Tarver in that 3rd fight then that said it all there and then. For this charade to be continuing even now is just silly.
He is now fighting guys with many losses against them and its really proving nothing. At his age he isnt going to get any better..
I just dont see the point in this charade...

Eh..thats better than nothin then I guess. Didn't Siaca hold the Super Middle WBA title someone was saying on here till he got KO'd by Kessler? And isn't Adamek the LH WBA Champ? In any case that adds some credibility to Siaca, least he's a former champ and can go on Jone's resume of 14+ past or current champs he has whipped.

Yes it can. And Siaca is a hard hitter so Jones' chin will be tested if he gets caught.

Agreed, if RJJ has any hopes of going beyond the level he is at at the moment, Siaca is certainly a step up fom Prince Badi Ajamu. In my view, this would need to be a pretty emphatic win in order to convince me that he can go on and back to world title contention. Whether he still has the skills, no doubt, is his body still there, perhaps, does he have enough motivation? That's where I think he might not be williing to make the sacrifices he used to.

Very true... if he'd starting using a tighter guard as he slowed down he would never of got hit with that fluke punch by Tarver.
Tarver will never get credit for it from me... he has his eyes shut, doesn't defend the one Roy hits him with first and doesn't even look at were the shot goes... pure luck... he wasn't trying for it.

Re: Roy Jones Jr: "Watch Me and See The Master"
Hmmm....... I never liked Jones. To much mouth, cocky attitude and not enough pop to go with it. A dominant fighter does just that,DOMINATES opponents. Jones jinks and jives and dances and runs and throws pitty pat combos. If your sooooooo good and soooo much better, knock everyone the *#$@ out!!! If you take all 15 (or 12 or whatever) rounds to win a decision and the guy leaves the ring unmarked and standing, you didn't dominate, you bored me. Its like John Ruiz, finds a way to win, and make everyone hate him at the same time. No disrespect, just dont like the style.

Can I ask you something..
What Roy Jones fights have you seen?
Because Roy Jones was the "definition" of dominating an opponent in his prime. You never saw his behind the back KO did you?
You want domination? The Richard Hall fight is the place for you.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr: "Watch Me and See The Master"
I think Majesty is right, Roy should change his style up a bit. If you look at the fighters who really lasted a long time they adapted to what their bodies were and were not able to do.
Look at these two guys:
Muhammad Ali: Young- up on his toes, moving, using flashy speed, combos. OLD - on the ropes, clinching, seldom moving, using flurries less often but still effective, did what he could to last the distance and win by UD and didn't focus on power.
Mike Tyson: Young - combinations, good head movement, good defense, great hand speed. OLD - 1 punch at a time, no defense, no head movement, less combinations, basically only a 4 round fighter.
Roy Jones needs to use his speed, have less early focus on power, focus on carrying power late into fights, use the ropes, more defense, and box more instead of overwhelming guys with his handspeed and power. The key is to use the one punch he never used to use....THE JAB!!!

Re: Roy Jones Jr: "Watch Me and See The Master"
Jones Jr will get knocked out in his next fight..... He is just chasing his past.

i admit i didnt see lots of his early fights. maybe he was better then. seems like the ones i saw formed my perspective of him. And the big losses to Tarver and Johnson didnt help.

In other words you only saw those fights.... Roy Jones in his prime was as dominant as they come.. he rarely went the distance against anyone I really doubt you have watched many of his fights.

Well his last 20 fights he has 9 ko and tkos combined, 7 wins by decision and 4 losses ... so less than 50% ko wins and 20% losses...........Dominating??

Well, yeah.. until his last 3 or 4 fights he dominated everybody he ever faced.. But you wouldn't know that obviously.
