Britsh boxing on the way up???????
Read today in the times that in 2004 (I think it was )there were 7000 active amateur boxers in the uk but today there are over 12000.
Thats great news for the long term of the sport.I went down my local club yesterday and it was full to the rafters with young boxers.
On top of that Britian has 2 real world champs in Hatton and Calzaghe.Amir Khan is 1 of the best youn prospects.
Sky are showing most of the best fights in the world and itv have boxing back on free TV with the bests of British.
;D 3 cheers ,British boxing is on the up again. ;D

Ice man, how the bloody heck can you tag Amir Khan on the end of that list of luminaries? That is ludicrous! Anyhow, I do agree that British boxing is on the way up, and to that list you can add David Haye, soon to be champ Michael Hunter, and oodles of other fighters as well. As for the Times stats, is it 12,000 amateur fighters that we have today, because 1,200 would seem to be a very big drop in the numbers.

In the uk we dont have PPV for every big fight.
A lot of the big fights are on free tv now.
Thats 1 good thing to start with. ;)

Enzo is the future, not Amir..............

Re: Britsh boxing on the way up???????
I was going to post a thread about this myself, but someone got there first, I was going to post in regards to british fighters who were going to break big on the world scene, in particular Michael Hunter who fights for an IBF strap tomorrow, Enzo Macarenelli (WBO champ), David Haye (future 2 weight Cruiser/Heavy champ!) Alex Arthur, Nicky Cook, Jamie Moore, all of them are young, hungry, talented and very exciting to watch. Look out for them, watch their fights, you won't be disappointed!

Re: Britsh boxing on the way up???????
same here i was thinking that Joe will be gone soon and Hatton to not to mention Clinton woods and Witter but who is coming up to take there place...
cant see khan getting there if im honest you guys are in for a shock if you think he is the future...
i like Haye think he could make the grade at world level i know im on my own here also rate froch and alex arthur... and if i CBA id be able to think of some others as we have a few ;)
but forget khan IMO ;)
-
Re: Britsh boxing on the way up???????
even though Naseem and Benn were the most exciting british fighters the last 15 years for me, Eubank has to be the best. What a great fighter. Nigel was good also. Can you imagine Nigel Benn in 1991 vs. the Marvin Hagler of 1985 or the Tommy Hearns of 1985? Great fights.

The Benn of 88, in his prime, would of been better ;)

Re: Britsh boxing on the way up???????
And no. British Boxing is not on the way up.
It's in a dire state. We'll never recapture the days when boxing was a beloved sport of household names such as Cooper, Minter, Conteh, McGuigan, Bruno, Benn, Eubank.
Look at Macklin and Moore for example, I like the boys but 20 years ago we had Tony Sibson, Errol Christie, Mark Kaylor, Herol Graham, Nigel Benn, Rod Douglas, Michael Watson... see what I mean?
Calzaghe is getting on and Hatton has said he only wants a couple more fights then Mayweather. Imagine the British Boxing scene without those two - it's pretty bare on the world scene really. No disrespect intended but I can't see the general public forking out on PPV shows for any active fighter other than Mancunian's for Hatton. Go back 10 years and we had Lennox Lewis, Henry Akinwande, Herbie Hide, Carl Thompson, Johnny Nelson, Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank, Henry Wharton, Crawford Ashley, Robin Reid, Richie Woodhall, Glenn Catley, Dean Francis, Ryan Rhodes, Ensley Bingham, Gary Jacobs, Ross Hale, Paul Ryan, Billy Schwer, Michael Ayers, Paul Burke, Steve Robinson, Duke McKenzie, Colin McMillan, Naseem Hamed, Wayne McCullough, Spencer Oliver, Michael Brodie etc all either established in the top 10 or fringes of world-class. Anyone who thinks the game is as healthy now as it was then needs a CAT scan and some cold water tipping on there head X-factor style.

Re: Britsh boxing on the way up???????
Go back 20 years and there's twice as many top fighters as I listed above from 10 years back, off the top of my head.
So no. British Boxing is on the slide, and has been since Benn-McClellan (only Naz held it together). Imagine if it wasn't for the emergance of Amir Khan at the Olympics and the return to ITV, British Boxing would be DEAD. I hate to say it, but if it wasn't for Audley Harrison then British Boxing may of died.
-
Re: Britsh boxing on the way up???????
carl froch
clinton woods
carl froch
ricky hatton
joe calzaghe
enzo
amir khan
michael hunter
junior witter
and ect still plenty of good british fighters waiting to come up

I bet you are the type of person who always think thinks things were better in the past.
Like 30 years ago when you could go out without locking your front door .
When was the last time Britian had 2 real world champs?
There may not be as many fighters as in the past but the ones we have are as good as in any era.

Carl Froch is not New York mate...you don't need to name him twice, but I agree with porky that it is on the way up compared with where we were ten years ago, and looking back with rose tinted glasses will do nothing but disparage the good generation we have going today.

Great heart but i dont think Jamie Moore is world class, look at the champs in his division, ODH-Spinks-Mosley?? Moore is a good european fighter but i dont think he is World Class.
My List of curretn/Possible World Class fighters are:
1.J.Calzaghe
2.R.Hatton
3.J.Witter
4.C.Woods
5.S.Harrison
6.A.Arthur
7.E.Macrenneli
8.D.Haye
9.M.Hunter
10.C.Froch.
Amir kahn cant even be held in that breath at the moment he has only just completed an 8 round fight!!!

-
Re: Britsh boxing on the way up???????
i think haye could clear up at cruiser if he sorts out his stamina probs.
-
Re: Britsh boxing on the way up???????
Okay, so we can take Michael Hunter off all the lists then :p
-
Re: Britsh boxing on the way up???????
I think John Murray, Carl Froch and Jamie Moore could give us some interesting fights over the next 2 years.
I'm looking forward to the Domestic duel between Froch and his long-term rival Tony Dodson.
Also the next fight involving Jamie Moore (Spinks?).
All in all, perhaps not on par with the recent golden years - but very good nonethless.
Both on the British and International scene, we have quite a few decent fighters in the game today.
The only shallow pool is the heavyweight division - but given time will recouperate.

Re: Britsh boxing on the way up???????
the british middle weight scene is looking a bit shite though. it's only really eastman that we've got out there and he's past it now in my opinion. i remember a young lad called matthew thirlwall who was in the class of 02 with carl froch and he looked like a good prospect, but he hasnt gone anywhere really. we need an exciting up and coming middle weight! any ideas?

Well Matt Macklin i feel will make moves in the 160 division in the next couple of years, one to watch out for.

Re: Britsh boxing on the way up???????
Read in Boxing Monthly that in the 70's there were only 200 active pro boxers in the uk.
At the moment there are around 600.
Just thought I would like to point that out to the people who think that things were always better in the past. ;D
