Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
10.11.06 - By Ted Sares: I watched the fight tonight and two things were crystal clear. 1) Evander Holyfield needs to retire right now and 2) Fres Oquendo won the fight. How the judges could give it to "The Real Deal" is beyond my wildest imagination. Sure, he knocked Oquendo down in the first round, but it was a flash knockdown that did no damage. In fact, Fres may have won the rest of the round.
To win a fight, you need to let your hands go, throw punches and land a few. Holyfield did neither. You think Quartey and Forrest was bad? This goes right along side and the surprised look on Ronnie Shield's face when the decision was announced affirms that notion more than any words can.
In the first fight on the under card, one of the may unknown (at least to me) judges somehow voted in favor of Elizondo over Navarro (who won handily) and this was a precursor of what was to come. The only possible way for Fres to have won that fight would have been by knockout. In the main event, the judges had their minds made up from the get go..
While Fres may have not done much to enhance his reputation in San Antonio tonight, he did do one thing. He won the fight. Make no mistake of that.
This was a politically correct decision....and it was bile-inducing.

Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
....told yall, now watch Don King put him in with Valuev!!!!
-
Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
just look at Oquendo's feet when he got hit, one right in front of the other, almost to the point of being crossed
legit knockdown but it didnt really hurt him
I wanna see the rest of this... another classic Don King decision, its depressing, especially for Fres, gotta feel bad for him

He looked pretty good huh, Do you think Holy could beat Valuev? If Holy was too fight Wlad, Wlad right now is my favorite, But if he(Holy) fought for title against Wlad, I would want Holy to win just where he would secure his legecy and 5 time champ. What do you think?

Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
It caused be for be 0fer in this week of the prediction contest. Thus far...
Anyway, the score cards were close so I am not sure if the fix was on or not. I did not view the fight.

I do not Evander to be 5 time champ anymore than I want Valuev to go 49 and 0
-
Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
It's not that he looked good it's just Don King wants Valuev to seem like a true champion much like he did with John Ruiz.
By taking fighters that are past their primes, not at the top of the division and hyping them up he will try to legitimize his champion.
Think about it, Holyfield = DKP fighter....Valuev= DKP fighter.....it's a win-win for Don. If Valuev wins he has a little more cred (in Don's eyes) and If Evander wins then he's back and perhaps has a shot at DKP fighter Oleg Maskaev.....OR Lamon Brewster, John Ruiz, etc get shots at Holyfield and the title is still controlled by Don King.....that's all it boils down to
-
Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
Don King brings an aura of Professional Wrestling to boxing....there is a script and he follows it and either way it comes out he's a winner.
-
Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
So now that Holyfield won, I guess it's Briggs vs. Holyfield afterall.....
-
Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
....Briggs is Ced Kushner's fighter....he's going to get Sultan Ibragimov (now trained by Jeff Mayweather)
1) Because Briggs is dangerous
2) Ibragimov is Oscar's fighter
3) CKP wants to keep their title too
4) Golden Boy needs bigger status in the heavyweight division
5) No one at this division wants to take risks!

But this $ will get them BOTH in the ring.....

Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
Maybe we should all watch it before we believe a reporter. After all one probably had Chavez beating Whitaker.

...not so fast my friend
Would you rather watch 2 old guys fight each other for a seemingly meaningless belt
OR
Would you like to see as DKP would spin it "A resurgent All time Great looking to recapture the titles that are rightfully his vs an undefeated GIANT a man NEVER knocked down before"
I see it as a way to either make money off of old Holyfield (so DK can get young fighters ready to take over for him) or a way to legitimize Valuev because as of today he has NEVER fought a decent heavyweight and won legitly

Fack!!
Completely forgot about 'Ze Noble Giant' ;D
Good point....
-
Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
But maybe you're right though....if Evander could beat Briggs he would have a title and he wants to unify them and a WBO-WBA title match up with Holyfield vs Valuev would bring even more credit to those guys even if I think they suck ass
-
Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
I am curious to see the PPV buys and attendance report...I will Venture to say Holy got a respectable amount of buys as well as he probably sold out the venue or damn near close to....Thats a 44 year old Holyfield that fans Like myself still Adore with his Warrior mentality...
I told everyone I would support his comeback as long as he wasnt getting blown out of fights and taking a severe beating....From what I read dosent seem to be the case.... I'm still on board with the The Real Deal ;)

Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
That was the first right hand Evander threw too. He still has the power but in all fights he fights a wonderful first few rounds and then falls apart. But Oquendo's slow paced style apparently let Evander set his tone late in the fight which is why Evander won.

What I want to know is...what if Valuev turns out to be the real thing?
What if his size is just the advantage that he needs & dominates all others?
Holy shit. Honestly...it wouldn't shock me.
Question I want answered is this...what if he totally blasted out someone like Brewster or Maskaev? Would that solidify any doubts?
-
Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
He could blast out Maskaev, I don't doubt that. But against Wlad he would be hit down the middle all night but is Wlad as effective punching upwards?
My thing is, he gets hit a lot, if he learned a good solid jab then he'd be the real deal.
-
Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
Hopefully holyfield doesn't win a 5th title (he's already the only person to get it 4 times). If valuev was only 6'4 he would be closing in on 0-49 imo. Holyfield will eventually have to fight one of the champs to get his 5th title (duh) and i don't think he's capable of beating any of them at this point. He's not george foreman. Valuev's like 37-38 and his age has to be catching up to him. Hopefully he loses soon.

I hate when people refer to him as a 5 time champ. He is a two time champ. (arguable 3) His 4th world title is a joke: He lost to Lewis, and in the very next fight he was fighting JOHN RUIZ for the same alphabet belt he lost to lewis ??? Its like calling Tim Witherspoon a two time champ(while Larry Holmes was the heavyweight champion)

He got a title on four different occasions and sadly thats the only thing that matters.

Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
If it is all about winning alphabet titles, wouldn't Tyson be a 5 time heavyweight champion. WBC, WBA, IBF in the 80's, and then the WBC and the WBA, in the 90's.

No because he had one belt while he got the others that still qualifies as 1 holding. If someone wins the wba and then the ibf and wbc thats 1 holding. If they win the wba, lose it, win the ibf, lose it, win the wbc, and lose it they are deemed a 3 time champion.

Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
God damnit Wacko Valuev's record is an ILLUSION!
Oh who is the HARDEST puncher he fought ??? Ruiz? Barrett? Sidenko??? those guys popped him pretty good
Who was the best boxer he has fought??? Donald? You could make a case that Larry won that fight.....in fact LARRY WON THAT FIGHT!.....John Ruiz? same as Donald!
Wonder why Ray Austin is the #1 IBF contender and not the #1 WBA contender??? Because he's good

Wlad is fighting UNDEFEATED Calvin Brock!
Hasim Rahman fought Oleg Maskaev who was 11-1 in his last 12 fights!
Sergei Lykhovich fought Shannon Briggs who was 12-0 in his last 12 fights!
And Nicolay Valuev fights Monte Barrett who lost to Hasim Rahman A YEAR AGO AND HAD NOT FOUGHT SINCE!!!
....come back to earth Wacko! I gues I chalk this up to the Alcohol
-
Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
Ray's last fight was pretty uneventful against Sultan. I had hopes he'd be a bright spot for american boxing but that's not the case.
-
Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
i thought matt skelton was ranked in the top ten by the WBA? i know there were talks about making a fight with him and valuev. but this might have been some more bolocks coming from frank waren

Alright, That being the case, and using the alphabet logic: Mike Tyson is a 3 heavyweight Champion, the same as Ali. When he was really champ in the 80's was the first, the second was the alphabet title he took off of Bruno. Then he was striped of that alphabet title, and went into the seldon fight as a contender and won a different alphabet title in his very next fight.

Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
The only problem with that early knock down , was that Oquendo put it in Reverse and floored it , and did not want to fight for the duration of the match. It takes 2 to fight, and when one guy is going backwards its hard for a 44 year old to set and fire, but Holyfield did enough to win against a very awkward opponent. Evander will do much better with a guy that wants to fight. , Hell knowbody looks great agianst Fres.
-
Re: Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken
...at this point in time I wouldn't be surprised if Valuev decided to take on Audley Harrison!

Aye, very true. Holyfield's strength is in fighting people who want to fight, not chasing some spring chicken around the ring and trying to catch him. I'm pleased that he won again, and I still think he can be a force in what is, without doubt, a mediocre heavyweight division with very few fighters around that can inspire the sort of support and enthusiasm for the sport that Holyfield does. Go on the revival!
