cool. first time seeing that.
a few observations:
A) goes to show how deadly a body shot can be.
B) goes to show what can happen to your body when your elbows aren't tucked in tight.
C) goes to show what can happen when you drop your hands.
D) goes to show how piss poor (most) mma guys are at boxing--the most fundamental and deadly martial art of them all.
Last night I was watching this Dutch MT guy and a BJJ guy and they were saying how superior the MT guy's stand-up was. Yet it was horrid... huge looping punches, low hands, poor combinations... and Joe Rogan praises that?. I've come to the conclusion that most MMA guys are just street brawlers with some ground skills, but if they went up against a good boxer, a contender, they'd get killed. UFC guys are supposed to be the best of MMA, but if they went up against the best boxers... the wards, gattis, mayweathers, Baldomir's, etc, they'd get KTFO in a hurry. But I still like MMA. ;D

That guy had the fight wrapped up, but was stupid and rushed in with his hands down, and got caught by a desperation haymaker.
But I really agree with the whole sloppy striking thing. You hear all the arguments about how you have to worry about other things, but when you see a guy like Cro Cop or Anderson Silva destroying people with their relatively clean, effecient standup, you kinda have to wonder if its all just a bunch of bull.
Hopefully, with Pride coming successfully to America, the UFC will have to start paying premium wages to gain and keep some of the best in the sport. And the more fighters are getting paid, the more likely we are to finally get a top tier boxer to make the cross over.
Von the argument about MMA vs boxing has been done loads of times. In a boxing match with boxing rules the boxer wins. Anything else and the boxer gets owned.

I no longer believe that because in order to beat the boxer the other guy has to get past his hands. Far easier said than done.
I also think this belief has come about because people are putting TOP "other" guys vs average (or old) boxers...ie, bonjaski vs mercer. come on. not fair. But let's see what happens when we put a top mma guy against a top boxer. Different story guaranteed. let's see Diego sanchez or karo parysian vs jones jr or tarver or woods. that's 170 vs 175. little change in weight. the boxer could make weight. or let's see kenny florian or sean sherk at 155 vs ANY welterwight, jr middlewight or middleweight... mayweather, baldomir, margarito, hatton, gatti, judah, mosley, wright, taylor. let's see chuck lidell and vlad klitschko. There's no way Chuck lands those right hands on a decent HW boxer.
BTW, I'm not knocking your judo. I love it and believe in it and want to take some. It's a TRUE matial art. But to get your hands on that boxer you've godda get by some pretty good combinations. ps, kickboxers are badass too. But MT guys, despite the elbows and knees, aren't half of what boxers and kickboxers are with their hands.
I wouldn't guarantee that a boxer would win EVERY time, but I don't think MMA fans give boxers the props they deserve. You cant take down a guy who stays away and kills you with the jab and 1-2 every time. The way most ground specialists take strikers down is by knowing enough boxing to survive on their way in or use jabs to hide the takedown. Either that, or wait for them to really commit to a punch, then take them down. But "enough boxing" won't be enough against a REAL boxer. They'd be destroyed.
Now take that boxer, and teach him to defend the takedown and check a leg kick, and you're left with a Mirko Crocop Filopevic that doesn't rely on the LHK to end fights.
Most people who follow MMA but not boxing think they know what good stand-up is. MMA guys are purely stationary, fail to utilize the jab and can't throw an effective combination or a short punch, nor can they do anything that even remotely resembles bobbing and weaving. They look for the 1-punch KO that any good boxer or kickboxer would see coming a mile away. They simply flail and hope one lands. Having said that, Chuck and Arlovski do throw a great right hand, but that's it, really.
I always like to ask people this... back in the day, when Royce Gracie was on top of the MMA world, do people REALLY think they he could have taken Tyson? Never. Tyson would have killed him. Literally. He wouldn't have even been strong enough to get him to the mat. In that regard, I would have given shamrock the chance only because he was so strong. But again, he had to get by Tyson's hands, or any other HW's hands.
Yeah boxers may not have trained for every aspect of mma but they are solid in what they know. If an mma fighter were to try and take a boxer toe-to-toe the boxer could easily exploit a mma fighter's usually sloppy stand up. I don't think the fight's over the moment the mma fighter takes the boxer to the ground either. He might not go into a guard but he will swing and do what he can to get out of there. If of course the mma fighter catches him in good position for a submission then the fights over. I tend not to find that finish as exciting as everyone else because it was really sloppy technique by both fighters. The one leaving his body wide open (a boxer would've collapsed a lung with that opening) and the other for running in thinking it was already over (a boxer with a finisher mentality may have done the same thing but i think may have backed off alittle when it was clear his opponent didn't have much left and would've wanted to end it standing instead of going for the way too common "throw alot of punches while the other guy is down so the ref stops the fight" finish).
I think the best chance an mma guy has to keep a good boxer at bay is with leg kicks. That's why kickboxers are great too, imo.

And when he rushes in, you can see he's going for some sort of uppercut, and thats why his hands were completely down, but it was still stupid. People should take a lesson from Anderson Silva. He had Franklin beaten for a solid minute before he ended the fight, but he kept his cool and kept doing what was working. Once you hurt the guy, you don't have to go insane to finish. Just keep hurting him and he wont be getting better too quickly... no need to go balls out like that.

I have to disagree about the quality of the standup of some of the top MMA fighters. What you have to remember is that they are fighting a different fight completely. They can't just concern themselves with disciplined boxing technique because they also have to defend leg kicks, high kicks, takedowns etc.
Oh, and if you think a top boxer is going to be able to defend a takedown attempt by say Tito Ortiz just by jabbing, think again. The pro boxer making the crossover would have a LOT of training to do in takedown defense and ground skills.
Last, to get back on topic, this finish was insane...but remember, Pete Sell and Scott Smith are NOT 2 of the best MMA fighters in the game, so comparing a top boxer to them is not a fair comparison.
I'm not saying to completely focus on boxing, but to actually use it. Theres a lot more to boxing than long punching combinations with perfect form. Footwork, movement, accurate and crisp punches and properly utilizing the jab. I've stopped plenty of friends with a nice stiff jab when they try and shoot on me (many of whom were very good wrestlers in HS and college, including on friend who went undefeated in HS and only once loss throughout college...granted, wasn't exactly div 1a, but i'm not exactly Ali in there...never had a real match, only sparring and backyard boxing with friends that actually compete). Most MMA fighters seem to use that "please knock me out" pawing jab that I hate so much (esp. Chuck).
And by the way, learning to check a kick and defend a takedown takes a LOT less work than a wrestler needing to learn actual submissions and how to box.
