HBO Negotiating With UFC!

Will Boxing Be Phased Out?
Allow me to qualify this article by saying I am the biggest and most diehard boxing fan you know. Over a period of 8 hours, two separate, yet extremely similar issues have been put in front of me, and as much as I hate to say it....
Showtime announced via press release today that it had signed a deal with promoter Gary Shaw to air Mixed Martial Arts on the network, a move industry insiders said could mean a movement away from boxing.
But what could have a much greater impact on boxing was not announced, but is going on behind the scenes, and Pound4Pound/Boxing2006 has learned some very eye opening and exclusive news.
HBO and the king of MMA, The UFC, have been talking for three months now to bring the sport to the cable giant. It is believed that the move to air UFC is driven by HBO's parent company, Time Warner. If UFC comes to HBO and is successful, industry sources told Boxing.2006 that martial arts -- which is hugely popular with the prized 18-35 demographic -- might in a year or so cause boxing to be either cut back on the air, or phased out.
Why turn to MMA for revenue?
Well for starters we are nearing the end of 2006 and let's face it, this year has been less than a stellar one for both networks. I hate to say it, but it looks like the networks are down on boxing and now they are fishing. Fighters fail to make weight in Championship bouts and waste the suits' marketing money. The heavyweight division has been lackluster for years now and with no "Tysons" to make them money the penguins are set to look elsewhere, fact is they already are! There are very few real stars, and outside of Oscar De La Hoya, who in boxing has the appeal to draw 1 million $$ PPV buyers? No one! Mr. P4P Floyd is recent proof of that. Trust me, the suits at Showtime don't give a lick whether it makes its money from MMA or boxing.
Showtime cut loose an extraordinary talent in Jay Larkin. What does that tell you about their commitment to boxing. They are trying to show boxing on a shoestring and hope the MMA will help tighten things up.
So what of the 'Heart and Soul" of boxing then? That being HBO. Could they actually be losing money on their pride and joy? Why else would the suits at Time Warner be courting the UFC? Could the writing be on the wall? If today's news in any indication I must sadly admit that the answer could be a resounding yes!
Now before ya'll go running saying "Trillo has turned his back on boxing", let me tell you that is the furthest thing from the truth. First of all, have you ever seen a MMA or UFC report on this site? NO! Trust me, you won't anytime soon. If you want the latest UFC report you will have to go to that money hoarding fight site who are only there for the coin and have little or no interest in you or that sport, if they did they would have already told you what we are telling you now.
No, this is a call to arms boxing. It's really time to clean up your act.
How many more times are fans going to stand for fighters throwing away their belts because they are too busy too make weight. How many more times will fans pay 50 bucks to see the self proclaimed best fighter in the World run around in circles for 12 rounds and then tell you he just painted a masterpiece. How many more times do we have to watch John Ruiz fight for yet another title eliminator hoping above all hope he won't win because another Valuev/Ruiz battle will make us slit our own throats?
Here's what you do boxing honchos... Unify the heavyweight belts now, it's the only battles in that division anyone wants to see. Come down hard on anyone who doesn't make weight for their Championship bout, I am talking huge million dollar fines and 2 year suspensions. Go back to same day weigh-ins and let Welterweights fight as Welterweights, not under nourished lightweights. Every fight is not a PPV extravaganza. No one should ever have to pay to see Roy Jones fight again. Evander Holyfield vs. Fres Oquendo is ......ugh....do I need to say more?
Today's findings that both boxing cable networks are ready to make a move makes one thing perfectly clear, the manly art of self defense has taken a beating this year, and with that, the Networks have been hit hard in their wallets. The suits don't care how they make their money, and if boxing isn't going to fill their pockets anymore you can rest assured they will look elsewhere. In fact they already are.
Consider yourselves warned!

Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
If ufc takes out boxing (somehow) i'm starting an angry mob.
-
Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
UFC is just full of pussies!
Let's see those guys box! I'd reckon Vitali could have taken anyone with his boxing/kick boxing background.
-
Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
I wish there was a heavy we could send over there to settle the score once and for all.
-
Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
UFC is just full of pussies! - lyle your an idiot lol
as for ufc taking over boxing, hopefully it will serrve as a kick up the arse to the wbc and people. i say go back to 15 rounders, boxers know the dangers, if they dont want to risk it, dont fight. Also in britain all boxing needs to be on terresitrial tv
-
Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
You see PBF fans, THIS is why I feel so strong about why young and strong fighters should fight young and strong fighters.... instead of going for the biggest pot and avoiding the hungry fighters on the way.
-
Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
UFC IS full of pussies.....they fight like John Ruiz....they know how to do submissions and wrestle, they can't strike for shit!!!
The Problem with boxing is and always has been POLITICS!!!! A league needs to be formed
-
Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
I'll agree. boxing could use a few reforms to how its managed but ufc? come on. Everytime a dude falls over the other guy jumps on top of him throws 20 punches (none of which land clean i might add) and the ref stops it. I hate seeing a fight end by submission because to me thats not real fighting. To be honest i have seen fights on jerry springer that lasted longer and had better exchanges than some i've seen on ufc. Usually a knock out is a direct result of someone not knowing how to block at all. ~rant over~

Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
if klitscho was boxings version of a blackbelt, and lidell ufcs version ( ideally at the same weight) a ufc green belt on the streets could take a boxing brown belt 9 times outa ten. UFC men are the toughest, espcially the old days of oleg tactarov etc, nto to say boxers arnt damm hard

*got confused with the whole rainbow connection thing* Are you serious? The boxers from the black and white days were ridiculously tough. Me and Lyle agree on something therefor there has to be a strong case against it.

Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
lol, as in if they had a street fight, most ufc fighters would knock ten bells out of a boxer for the simple reason, if its a kicker vs a puncher tjhe kicker cant lose, NORMALLY.
-
Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
In a street fight, the boxer wins vs any former of martial arts you wanna come up with.
-
Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
I don't dislike other forms of fighting but Boxing is one of the world's oldest sports and has been one of the most popular since the days of John L. Sullivan!!!
UFC has it's place, it's not on HBO though....not unless boxing is going back to NBC, CBS, ABC/ESPN.....and I'm talking BIG fights not bum fights.....more like back in the old days Robinson-LaMatta wasn't PPV I mean good old fights were on regular tv!
-
Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
Good fights on basic cable and bring back the 15 rounders and boxing becomes bigger than it ever was before

anything goes in a street fight u think boxer would just use his fist ?? boxer would win streetfight because most boxers before they go into amateur and pro actually have alot of street fights and most of them ufc ive seen arent in good shape like proper world champions at boxing im not saying all ufc are out of shape of course there not but people like tank abbot and ect are well out of shape

Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
That being said, as a Southern Gentleman....only sissies and little girls kick*
*In a street fight I think kicking is a bitch move along the lines of pulling hair and screaming like a girl

that and its not like their kicks will shatter granite. Its not like if you successfully block one your whole spinal cord is rearranged.

Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
if he charges it wil go to ground, and the boxer cant fight there, if he stays at long range, kicked to death, and i dont see how he would get close enough, ufc fighters in the main, are no fools

Of course because the moment a boxer gets taken to the ground he becomes a fish out of water and just flops there helplessly at the mercy of the bone crunching kicks thrown at him from a much superior being. ::** ::** ::** ::** ::**

he does seems to have a strong dislike in arm usage
-
Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
lol! no, dont get me wrong, i do boxing i dont do ufc, and boxing is by far better to watch, but i just think in a street fight the ufc guys would nearly always get the better of the boxer
-
Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
It depends on how things unfolded. I'd say you'd have to give them both a fair shot at winning. And isn't everything other than the ultimate fighter and the occasional match here and there on ppv? Why do they need more ppv channels?
-
Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
afaik there are only two pure boxers who fought in the UFC, both of them got whacked!
MMA guys wear really thin gloves just enough to protect their knuckles that can do tons of damage to an opponent, a single punch can stop a fight.
here in PI former boxing champs fight in mma all of them lost to mma guys.
bottom line i like them both

Listen dude you need to seriously chill about that insultive bullshit...Take it from me you dont know a gotdam thing about UFC or MMA .....I have made you look foolish many of times in this argument....Would you like me to go back to old posts and put you back in your place?????

Thats just plain ignorance......Gee why dont we just forget about the ground game all together.....Why dont you get off of The Klit families junk seriously..... How many Vitali Klit kickboxing fights have you seen besides the One Video floating around youtube were he is fighting a guy who is 8 inches shorter than him???
-
Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
i think most of the time a UFC fighter would come out on top. simply because they train for nearly every scenario of a street fight (i.e. elbows, kicking). whereas the boxer would try and fight the more gentleman fight and stick to fists.
and for the people who would refrain from kicking when it comes to a real scrap you guys will get put right on your arse if you go out there with the attitude of trying to win the most gentlemanly fighter scouts badge.

Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
UFC IS ALREADY ON HBO!!! ;)

I'm guessing you've never been in a submission hold. Fighting doesn't get much more real!

Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
Boxing is still my sport, but MMA has everything that boxing doesn't. They have good fights for free, and when they have a PPV fight, they pack the bill and make it worth buying. There's less drama and less premadonna garbage. They actually teach their fans what the sport is about.
Did anyone compare the difference between The Contender and THe Ultimate Fighter. If I weren't a boxing fan, I would have no incentive to watch boxing after seeing the contender. It sucked. The Ultimate Fighter helped to create new fans (me).
-
Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
I understand tuck, HOWEVER UFC does has drama and premadonna garbage....you did notice that in the UFC reality show right???
JT I don't like UFC I don't like Tito Ortiz, I don't think their fighters (especially the fighters in the reality show) are too terribly gifted. I think the only thing UFC brings to the table besides no politics (which is great) is the fact pretty much anyone can do it....like Bruce Lee said later in his life (after his injuries but obviously before his death) "No style is my style" and it's the case in UFC there are no real tactics, no true strategy....you just fight for your life.
.....I would think it would be MORE exciting but nah, it's not.
-
Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
...and when I say no tactics or strategy I understand "ground and pound" and "submission" but it's such a fluid constant motion sport that you can't set anything up....you just grab a free limb and pull back on it or beat someones' face in....not exactly a sport for smart people

No problem you name the street and we will have a fight...Guaranteed you'll be my bitch along with screaming like a girl.... ;D
Because people on the street really give a fuk whether you are a southpaw or right handed....Along with no hitting on the break....You need to wake the Hell up!!!! I guess you have never had a fight have you Lyle... Tell the Muay Thai Boxer who trains like a demon and hardens his shins and kicks a 700lb heavy bag and gives 100% in his training just like any topflight boxer....
You are so damn ignorant about this stuff it sound down right comical.....Please never, ever get into a fight...You will be seriously Maimed and probably killed Lyle....You really have no concept do you...in a Street fight people want to hurt you and cripple you, they dont give a shit what you would deem sissy or not...
You bet your ass in a street fight if I was having trouble I would pull someones hair, kick them in the balls jab them in the eye, bite them, pinch what ever the hell it takes Thats what I'm trained to do......Say you were assaulted while walking to the car with your girlfriend(Boyfriend) and people were having a way with her/him......Getting you mad huh??? Well get mad nipple head cause you aint gonna yell STOP...Were going to do this Queensbury Rules style........You Fukin get mad!!!!!! Fukin Bite, tear, pinch, knee, elbow, headbutt whatever it takes...
Its all about self preservation and protecting your lifeforce and your loved ones......Its not about whos right its about whos LEFT!!!!!! Sissy nah not even a little bit

Actually, you'd be surprised at how much skill goes into that. My roommate works at an MMA school where they also teach boxing. The details of Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai are very complex. Not just anyone can jump in and start fighting, or if you do you wouldn't last two seconds.
The contender's Joathan Reid and Vinroy Barrett teach boxing there and they would last three seconds with a really good MMA guy. Also, read any interview with heavyweight Jeremy Williams. He's fighting MMA and said that he's never had his ass kicked by some many white guys in his life.
MMA done well is a science, like boxing.

Bruce Lee's quote was to illustrate "Having no way as a way" to get the point of Jeet Kune Do across...It takes the most useful aspects out of a Martial art and blends it together with another so you become profecient in all ranges of combat...After you get a foundation you find what works for you and make it your own.....
Not just anyone can do it...Thats total Bullshit!!!!! The skill set it takes is phenomenal....Drop by a Gym that trainsfighters in MMA and see how specialized the training is......Your stradegy is constantly adapting like a Football or Basketball game....There is no secrets going on the whole point of the game is me trying to get into the endzone and you trying to stop me........Thats why they have hundreds of plays on offense and defense as to constantly change strategies to accompolish our goal of winning .....

Re: HBO Negotiating With UFC!
So not anyone can fight? Fighting is a natural thing tuck....hence the "fight or flight" response....ANYONE and EVERYONE has the ability to fight....some on a different level than others and the MMA style of fighting is more like that than boxing....and I'm just not a fan of it....it's like comparing football and rugby....I like football, I don't like rugby....going to give me hell on that one too??
I don't measure myself by how many fights I've been in...every second of every day I can choose to fight someone. I usually choose not to fight, I have too much going for me to get arrested for assault or any other charges. I'm an adult and inspite of how I post ( ;D ) I am mature in the way I handle situations where usually some punk downtown wants to fight...I go downtown in my nice clothes and it would be a damn shame to have them ripped or have them covered in the other guy's blood, I am also VERY aware of the fact that if I whip someone's ass downtown usually bad shit happens, either one of his boys will try the old beer bottle to the head or I walk out of the bar and get shot or stabbed and I am not going to risk my life over some drunk idiot in a bar. I spar in the ring and that's about it...that doesn't mean I CAN'T fight in the street, I just choose not to...or try to choose not to, sometimes people just need a whuppin
