Cotto vs Margarito...
It seems like Margarito would like to fight Cotto...What a fight this would make! If this fight does happen and Cotto does win...I surely hope PBF will stick around long enough to fight Cotto...at that point, Cotto would deserve a shot...with his overwhelming power advantage over PBF, I think he might be able do some serious damage to PBF....let's not get ahead of ourselves however...Cotto vs Maragarito first...hell of a fight that would be.

Agreed Margarito leaves himself way to open with his slow punching and lack of defense... Cotto is a Hell of a counterpuncher and a freak of nature in terms of Body shots along with a versatile style and ring generalship... I can see Cotto chopping Margarito down....
Well a Barometer on how Floyd can handle power will be against Oscar...Its a scary thought Cotto can only get better and literally took the life out of Quintana... I wont forget that image for a while Cotto landing that body shot and Quintana laying helpless then getting up with blood spewing from his mouth and looked like he was suffering from a gunshot wound to the back....
Cotto just put the whole Welterweight Division on notice with that brutal display.... :o

I'm sorry, did you mean THIS body shot ----> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aq6QpLC3Lkc ;)
Yup, freak of nature describes Cotto best. His power is just devastating...his body shots are just brutal. I'm really hoping for a Cotto vs Margarito contest. IF Cotto wins and if he happens to win by KO...PBF IMO would have no choice but to come out of retirement (should he retire at that point) and face this undefeated hard hitting Lion. If PBF chooses not to and retires leaving Cotto undefeated...well...no comment...

Re: Cotto vs Margarito...
Margarito will be lucky to get by Williams before getting KTFO by Cotto. Margarito proved again that he's not a very good boxer, lacks real power, and only racks up the wins because he's so busy. He won't have the business advantage against Williams (nor will he have a size, reach, or strength advantage).
-
Re: Cotto vs Margarito...
Margarito could beat Williams.
He wouldn't beat Cotto.

Re: Cotto vs Margarito...
Of all the current WWs Margarito is possibly the toughest fight for Cotto. Not only does he have a huge size advantage but he also knows how to use it. Cotto has to get through some serious artillery to get to Margarito's ribcage and you gota wonder if Cotto can take his pounch after being wobbled by junior welterweights. It's just a tough match up to predict. It could be another grueling beatdown by Cotto if he can get inside Margo's range or a short night for Cotto if he can't.
I'll be rooting for my boy Cotto all the way but I have serious doubts that he successfully gets inside and does enough damage.

Re: Cotto vs Margarito...
I'm a huge Cotto fan and I have to admit that this fight makes me a little nervous. Margarito is big, powerful, and durable with a hell of a chin. I think he can hurt Cotto, and I don't know if Cotto would be able to last long enough to have his devastating body shots take effect. I'm rooting for Cotto, but this is a pick 'em in my eyes.

Re: Cotto vs Margarito...
I don't see Margarito beating Williams much less Cotto

Cotto and Margarito are my 2 favourite fighters but I'd favour Tony strongly. He;s a huge WW,Cotto has been hurt by smaller guys. He was wide open to Judah's uppercuts which Judah would wind up and even I could see coming. Margarito is adept at fighting on the inside and outside and has dangerous left and right uppercuts. And although he may not hit as hard to the body with one pinch as Cotto,he does possess a very good, sustained body attack.
Cotto would have a long body to aim for but he'd be taking alot back. And as good as his stamina was in the Judah fight,Margarito is a cardio machine. He just never stops, and is 1 mean badass. He would certainly have his moments because he is such a world class fighter but I don't believe he can take what would be coming back his way from the bigger, stronger man.
(we really need Tony to win this weekend,Cotto-Tony could be FOTY between the 2 best WW on the planet.Cotto-PW does not have the same ring to it.)_

CC,good post.I like that you are more of a Miguel fan but can see the dangers. I think I'd be rooting 51-49 in favour of Tony BUT he needs to get past PW first which is no easy task.

Re: Cotto vs Margarito...
Yeah, I hate to be looking past PW, a very live underdog and legit contender himself. I can't wait to see what these two bring to the table come Saturday. The only problem is that both fighters are so different to Cotto that I won't be able to take much out of it. Meaning, I won't see anything from this fight that will show how Cotto could win or lose because of the difference in styles.
All these fights at WW are just matchmaking at it's best.
-
Re: Cotto vs Margarito...
I think in end Cotto's pure determination and body punching will do trick to take a decision against Margorito. Only thing Cotto still shown he can be rocked so who knows but i think in end those body shots will do trick.
-
Re: Cotto vs Margarito...
For Me if Cotto fights Margo he has to box him( and he is good at it) make him tire and Pull a Ndou kind of performance but with much better defense since Margarito hits like a mule and he does have experience.
-
Re: Cotto vs Margarito...
I like Cotto to beat Margarito. I think Tony's power in overrated, and I think he's slower than Cotto as well.
All in all, I think Margarito is simply a poor man's version of Cotto. Cotto is better all-around. Would definitely be an entertaining fight, and if it takes place later this year in New York, I plan on being there at the Garden to see it.
If Williams beats Margarito, there's been some talk that Mosley would face Cotto. I would love to see that fight as well.

Re: Cotto vs Margarito...
Margarito for me is totally over rated , Cotto KOs him inside 5

Him being over rated is your opinion and is to be respected but to say Cotto would ko him in 5 is really silly. Margarito is one of the toughest fighters around, the chances of Cotto stopping him at all are slim. Thh thought of Cotto beating him in 5 is just plain ridiculous.

Totally disagree with Margarito being a poor mans Cotto. Tony has had that style for years,Cotto has been altering his style and watching the Judah fight,it's more like Tony's now. Margarito is slower but then again,he's slower than most of his opponents and has still beaten them. Cotto is technically more sound all around but Tony is bigger, stronger and hits harder than anyone Cotto has faced. I agree though,Margarito's power is slightly over rated.

Ok excuse me here folks why I have a little rant at all the Tony Margarito haters.
I really feel that Margarito gets the least respect of any high profile fighter out there. I keep hearing that he has no power but I think this is unfair. He destroyed huge punching Kermit Cintron, finished Miguel Gomez in one round and once he got into his stride against Joshua Clottey he reduced him to covering up on the ropes looking to survive.
His win over Clottey was also completely downplayed imo. It seemed that from that one fight Clottey got inflated to being one of the top 147lbers whilst Margarito got 'exposed' and demoted to an also ran.
It seemed that the majority opinion was that Clottey sweeped the first 4 or 5 rounds and that only a broken hand prevented him from stopping Margarito.
This was a complete exaggeration imo.
First off Margarito CLEARLY WON the first round against Clottey. He lost the next three as he got caught repeatedly and looked sluggish and off. However he completely turned it around after that and Clottey couldn't do a thing afterwards.
Ok so he hurt his hand, big deal. It seems that in virtually every fight somebody claims a hand injury but for some reason Clottey's hand injury clearly and definitely prevented him from knocking Margarito out ::**
I know Corrales was moving up two weight divisions but he couldn't back Clottey up, whereas Margarito had Clottey covering up on the ropes throughout the second half of their fight.
I've got faith that Margarito will get past Williams. A fight with Cotto would be a war and it's certainly possible that Cotto's workrate and relentless pressure may result in him outhustling Margarito down the stretch but that doesn't mean that Margariot is a bum or overratted.
He hasn't lost at 147 for nearly a decade and is tall and big enough to pose anybody problems.
As of now I'd rank him at Number 2 in the welterweight ranks although Cotto may well beat him.
Either way it's a hell of a fight and Margarito will without a doubt be the biggest challenge for Cotto so far.

Shit man, thats a great post,CC! I totally agree. And if anyone has followed Clottey's career,he is not backed up easily at all. Also,Margarito twisted his ankle(so bad that the fight was going to be cancelled but he gutted it out and he injured his wrist in sparring) but the difference was Margarito did not moan about it constantly and he carried on fighting. Clottey just stopped when his hand was broken.
It;s also funny that Tony is a "bum" or "over rated" but when the opponent does well against him(Clottey),they get elevated ??? We'll see what happens Saturday but if Margarito beats PW,I dont want to hear shit from anyone. That would mean Margarito would have beaten 7 RING top ranked fighters and 3 of the current top 10.He ducks no-one and would fight anyone.
What;s with the turnaround Bil,you used to be one of Margarito's harshest critics here!

Cheers EL Gamo cc returned. I like Margarito, your right I didn't at first but I've never been closeminded and always like to examine what other's see in a fighter or sport. I used to hate MMA but am now in the prcess of collecting every single UFC event since the beginning in 1993.
You never know I might soon be writing on what an excellent fighter Christian Mijares is and that Ivan Calderon deserves more media coverage :-X
But one step at a time though :P

You made me watch the fight again.
It looked like a pretty good fight until the fifth. Cotto switched to southpaw and turned up the heat.
Watching the fight again, I heard Quintana on his stool say "He hurt me and he is just too fast for me". And this is when the fight was called off.
I love when people say Cotto is slow.
LMAO.
Say what!?
Funny how I totally missed the low blow from Quintana. I guess since Cotto did not throw himself on the ground like Judah did, we tend to forget things like this in a fight.
Mario Lopez said it best when he called Zab Judah a drama queen.
;D

Re: Cotto vs Margarito...
Hell of a fight undeed, two guys that don't take a step back and would come right at each other, according to the laws of Dynamics, when two bodies collide at full power ( steam) ( speed multiplies force) there is balance when the dynamic forces ( force multiplies acceleration) cancel each other - well, I don't believe there would be equilibrium here cause here comes where sweet science beats science itself, Tony rips your entire mid section with twisting tornado motion and Cotto breaks through solid in straight lines, the Tijuana man would be bursting him from side to side, back and forth until Miguel would be pretty shaken!

Re: Cotto vs Margarito...
Would be interesting but i think Margerito would leave himself too open and Cotto would take full advantage of that. Is this likely to happen if Tony beats Williams ? Is there any truth in it that Cotto's next defence will be against Cintron ?

Margarito and Cotto already have an agreement. If Margarito wins this weekend, he will face Cotto later this year at Madison Square Garden. It's a done deal.
If Margarito loses to Williams, then Cotto's opponent could be Cintron, Mosley, Clottey, etc.

Why not fight Williams if he wins?
Cotto vs. Williams would be interesting IMO (especially if he had just beat Margarito).
Cintron has a tough fight ahead of him this weekend, Matthysse is a tough mother fucker. He didn't go down against Williams he just couldn't keep up with the pace and started getting outlanded 4 to 1 when the ref stepped in.
Mosley....who knows what he's doing? All I know is unless your name is PBF you will probably have a hard time inking a fight with him.
Clottey already has a fight booked in August against Jose Luis Cruz.

In a perfect world Margarito would win to set up Margarito vs Cotto.
Cintron would win and set up a fight against Mosley.
At the same time we will have PBF vs Hatton
Then we have Winner of Margarito/Cotto vs Winner of Mosley/Cintron
The winner of that can face the winner of Hatton/PBF
AAHh here is to dreaming.....
H
