MARGARITO NEXT UP FOR COTTO?
After firmly announcing his arrival on the welterweight scene on Saturday night, Miguel Cotto could now be set for a mouth-watering fight with Antonio Margarito.
The pair were on the same bill at Boardwalk Hall, but it was Puerto Rican Cotto who stole the show with a demolition of the previously undefeated Carlos Quintana.
A stoppage victory secured Cotto the 23rd KO of his career, along with the WBA welterweight title vacated by Ricky Hatton.
The rapid and impressive nature of Cotto's victory did not go unnoticed by Margarito and the duo now look set to go head-to-head......

Cotto should be carful imo. margarito knows what he is doing at 147. He has had one fight at 147 and he shouldnt rush things looking for the best! Margarito will fight well in this one and it would be close but im edging towards margarito here

Tony has absolutely no defense, Cotto will absolutely punish him to the body. Clottey was landing the bigger shots of the two, imagine if Cotto uses those holes in Tony's defense. He'll put Tony away like Quintana.

yeah cotto looked strong and big against quintana. margarito wasnt too impressive that night. this is the welterweight fight i want to see right now though, i think it would be explosive. it's a tough one to call; i would think it would be a slugfest and would be determined based on whether or not Cotto could mount a successful body attack on Margarito and who wants it more; they both can hit; i think Cotto is the better boxer but Tony has a better chin; in the end it may just come down to the one who has just that much more of an edge in his conditioning that night...i really hope they make this one happen...

Either way Williams or Cotto, Margarito is going to get his ass handed to him!

One thing I will say is that neither Cotto nor Williams should believe they can stand and bang with the guy. Tony is so limited defensively that they should effectively box him and time their big shots. Tony has no shot to win unless he lands something big. Tony just throws shitty punches and doesn't defend himself while he throws. They should use this against him like Clottey did. Most feared welterweight my ass.

Albsur,you're going on about the most feared WW thing is getting annoying and repetetive. I'm a Tony fan and thought it was nonsense but it was a marketing ploy,it got his name out there,that's that.
As for the fight,it won't happen just yet,Cotto must fight his mandatory against Urkal and Margarito must fight Williams and if both make it through Arum has already stated that he would like them to meet at the end of 07. Margarito didn't look brilliant last night but it was for a number of reasons,take away all the ifs and buts and he still got the W against an opponent very few would have chosen to fight as an optional defence....
As for the Cotto-Margarito fight,Cotto would have the body to aim at but if Tony is 100% fit,I'd favour him. His stamina is ridiculous and is actually better than he showed against Clottey,he had ring rust there,and I believe he has the power to hurt Cotto. Also,don't forget,Cotto has been hurt before and Tony,fully prepared is a dangerous WW. It would be a cracking fight,a fight the fans want to see. IF Cotto cannot hurt and slow down Margarito,it'll be a long night for him and remember,Margarito.although not as devestating,goes to the body ALOT himself,something Cotto is not used to. It's good to see my 2 best fighters as the 2 best WW! ;D :D 8)

And that was the worst I ever saw of Margarito. I think he can get better, with less-injuries and camp improvement.

Either Williams or Cotto would be great fights for Margarito.
Even though im far removed from the AM fan club, id still say that its too early for Cotto to get in the ring with Margarito.
I mean look what Torres was capable of... Cotto would need a fight or two against strong Welters.
Im not sold on Williams... Maybe i picked the wrong fight to study him on.
His last fight (The one where Joe Cortez.. The sadistic Barstard... Seemed to enjoy watching Williams' foe take round after round of punishment) was as bad a testament to a boxers punching power as any fight ive seen.
Especially (i suppose) as he'd been (foolishly) touted as the New Hearns.
No... Williams is a fighter who has to get up at 4am every morning to run his azz off of to ensure he gets to fight the smaller guys.
Cory Spinks, if he could still make the weight (Can he?) would be a far better bet.
At the moment, Margaritos biggest threat at 147 IMO is still Juda :-X

at 140 Cotto had to fight in spurts and he also never respected anyone's power because he was so much bigger. Miguel knows how to box and he'd give Margarito a tough go....but it's far from in the bag
Mosley is coming back to 147 as far as I know?

I agree with you on Cotto... But i also feel that Cotto is prone to fight back when he's slugged a good'n hence he gets sloppy and the fight becomes a thriller:D )ala Gatti ::**

Who cares if your getting annoyed by "the most feared welterweight" thing? I was very annoyed when I watched the fight to see what all the hype was about and watch the guy take huge shots all night, not defend himself, and basically luck out because his opponent fucked his hand up. I was annoyed to see that for a full year people have built this guy up to be Godzilla, but the guy only has decent power, has no defense, and is a very average and limited boxer. He proved Saturday that he can easily be outboxed and outpointed on any given night. The only way Tony wins is if someone stands with him and fights, if you move around on the guy and land well placed shots, you can do it for a full 12 rounds and all he can do is sit there and smile because he knows that he's limited and in his eyes, boxing is just punching. All he knows how to come forward and throw punches. He doesn't feignt, he doesn't defend himself, he doesn't adjust to certain styles, he's your basic come forward type fighter with OK boxing skill. That's it. I'm not making any of this up, anybody can watch him and see what I'm saying. I understand that you're a fan of his, but if you are a true fan then you should already know that he's a basic and average fighter that just happens to have a belt. That's it. He's not elite and he'll most likely never be elite unless a bunch of stuff changes. I'll give him credit for being an exciting fighter and throwing a bunch of punches. If I was Larry Merchant, he'd probably be top 5 p4p, but I'm not gonna sit here and not say anything when people are acting like he should be given a medal for getting blown out by a guy for four rounds until the guy broke his finger. People are blaming his little injuries and ring rust on his performance, but aren't pointing to the fact that the guy just isn't very skilled to begin with. If you take away his ability to punch, he's a nobody, he has no other discernible qualities about him outside of being a big welterweight. PBF is my favorite fighter and he's probably the most hated on fighter on this forum, and I don't come out and tell other posters that I'm annoyed by their statements. PBF is stepping up to a higher weight to fight a champion who is at least 5 times better than Margarito in hand speed, power, speed, pure boxing ability, and defense, and people like Gyrokai are still saying PBF is running scared??? I'll give Tony credit for his win, but I don't see how anyone could say that he's the future of the division. Give me a break.

What's all this, Cotto should adjust to 147, or he should be careful, about.... Anyone who watched Saturdays' card shouldn't feel that way... Margarito looked like half the fighter Cotto did... And he probably is.. Why shouldn't Cotto take this fight, I think he could win handily... He is the much better boxer, and he puts his punches together alot better too and has just as much power... On the one hand I can appreciate that, "cotto can't stand and trade with MArgarito"... But come on, you think he would plan on it? If that's the best that can be said for Tony it shows just what a limited fighter he is... You shouldn't stand and trade with anyone if your a better boxer, even if you could win that way, why give the guy his only chance?? Naaa,I don't see anyone owning anyone...and yeah Margarito looked bad but that was one of his worst perfomances and regardless of how,he still came out with a W. And Cotto would box well against Tony,I can't see him standing there but Tony would damage him on the ropes and Cotto does seems to have that warrior spirit if you hit me,I'll hit you back harder type and that would get him into trouble with Tony. Cotto is the overall better fighter but thten most of Tony's opponents are technically better,he just has skills in areas that are hard to match:his stmaina was astounding for a guy who only fought once all year,his heart,determination,volume of punches and when he's on song,his placement is superb too.
Listen,I'm a fan of both guys but to say Cotto would blow out Tony based on Tony's worst and 1 of Cotto's best performances,I don't buy it. I want tosee this fight ALOT though so I hope they beat their mandatories and get it on!

Get your story straight. Everybody knows Arum offered 8 million dollar paycheck to Mayweather, Floyd opted to take on the likes of Sharmba Mitchell for nothing near 8 M-I-L-L-I-O-N $$$$.

And it sounds like you don't know how to measure a boxer. You have to see MORE than one fight to get a feel for where a boxer stands. More than two! Three minimum. heh

CC Gyro,that was probably the worst I have seen Tony and he still got the W,that's all that matters first and second,to start making huge negative assumptions from this 1 performance is a novice mistake.
Hey,who knows,it could work to Tony's favour and he may get more offers for bigger fights!! Also,how dumb does Floyd look for not taking the easy $8million!!!
