Rate the Fantastic Four
How would you guys rate the great four champions of the 80's Hagler, Hearns, Leonard and Duran?
Here's my list.
4. Hagler. Great middleweight one of the best ever but he's 4th on this list cos he only did his business in one division.
3. Hearns. So close between him and Leonard as a couple of Leonards decisions were questionable, I'll put the Hitman third though becuase he had a weak chin and was naturally a much bigger man than Leonard.
2. Ray Leonard. Arguably the best of the bunch as he won the most titles in the most weight classes and was the only one of the four to score wins against all of the other three. A couple of questionable decisions count against him though.
1. Roberto Duran. Duran is my favourite, an awesome fighter whose 'no mas' against Leonard and his KO at the hands of Hearns, along with a couple poor showings can be overlooked as he was the smallest of them all, a natural lightweight and went on to go 15 rounds with Marvin Hagler one of the top 3 or 4 middleweights of all time!
Thats the equivalent of Ricky Hatton moving up and fighting Jermain Taylor for the middleweight championship of the world now. His wins over tough competiton like Leonard, Cuevas, Moore and his awesome win over Iran Barkley to win a middleweight crown make him in my opinion at least the best of the bunch and one of the top 4 or 5 fighters of all time.
What do you guys think?

Sue Richards - pretty hot nice ass. every woman should be able to make herslf invisible, like during a big PPV fight
Johnny Storm - Hot young high flier, dont go to the bar with him,he'll get all the best chicks.
Benn Grimm - Will have your back in any bar fight, ugly bastard makes you look better next to him "it's clobberin time!!"

Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
This is a tough one for me but
I have to go with:
Sugar Ray Leonard
Roberto Duran
Marvin Hagler
Thomas Hearns
I never liked Duran but I give him his props. It's not that I did not like him but my favorite fighter was Sugar Ray.
All of them great and the memories of them are forever with me and some of you too who were a part of that great generation of fighters.

Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
Um it has to be
Leonard
Hagler
Hearns
Duran
... at least during their era... Leonard did in his prime beat all of them, and Duran lost against all of them I have him last, Hearns beat Duran, and outboxed Leonard, but didn't have the chin so he lost to both Hagler and Leonard. Hagler DID lost to Leonard... he was outpunched, and outboxed... Leonard was more past his prime than Hagler, and Hagler fought a dumb fight which a great shouldn't be doing. As for during their whole career I would have Duran #2 behind Leonard
My top 10 p4p ever not particular order except RJJ
RJJ
PBF
Pernell Whitaker
Leonard
Duran
Prime Tyson
Ray Robinson
Hagler
Ali
Hopkins
runner ups
Toney(when he used to train)

Joe Louis
Willie Pep
prime Archie Moore

Hearns
... my list is always changing.

Duran
Hagler
Leonard
Hearns
If Hearns had a better chin, he could've been the best of all!!

Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
are we talking in the 80s how they rate? in the 80s I put it Leonard,Hagler,Hearns, Duran. If all time I put it Duran, Hearns,Leonard, Hagler. Hearns was the only one to go into the 90s and beat Virgil Hill a 10 time defending titlist and undefeated. That does alot for him in my book.. But in the 80s.. he didn't beat Hill yet.
-
Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
All four of them achieved incredible things, but Duran is my favourite, butthe best fighter out of the lot is probably Ray Leonard.

I meant in an all time sense really.
It has to be Duran for me, mainly because he was a lightweight who kept moving up. All the other three were much bigger men, Leonard was 5 ft 10, Hagler I think around the same and Hearns was over 6ft.
Duran was 5 ft 7 the same as Cotto and Hatton so to do what he did in his career was remarkable. And he fought for nearly 100 years as well!

Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
As simple minded as it sounds, im going to vote in order of size and weight.
1. Duran
2. Leonard
4. Hagler
3. Herans
Although i will always maintain that Hearns was the best boxer ;)
-
Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
1.Leonard (Wins against all of them, beat a defensive wizard in Benitez by stoppage, Titles in the most weights, great heart)
2.Duran (One of the greatest lightweights of all time, understandable loses against the others look at size difference)
3.Hagler (a GREAT middleweight champion, great entertaining style and a ROCK SOLID chin)
4.Hearns (stoppage losses against Hagler and Leonard hurt his resume here but if he had a chin who knows!)
-
Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
1. Hagler
2. Duran
3. Hearns
4. Leonard

Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
hagler duran and leonard all belong in the top 15 p4p of all time imo, hearns not quite with them but certainly close
-
Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
Duran.. simply just my favourite .. an amazingly tough fighter.. born to fight..
pulled off some great wins.. we forget that duran fought hearns and hagler a fair few years after he upset mr leonard!!.. but even with the losses on his record .. thats one of the things i like most about roberto.
he doesnt give the impression that he was fighting for fame and legacy etc not like hearns and leonard or hagler who all have good records.. duran fights because its the only thing he knows, because he fights for money and its that kind of somewhat humbleness and you get the feeling is down to earth.. as well as having fought for his dreams he also fought to put food on the table..
then i would say hearns.. Hearns just a legend.. great power puncher.. master boxer had some great bouts.. also another guy that found it hard to hang the gloves up.. in fact wasnt he still fighting just a couple of years or so ago?..
also its a personal preference of mine...
leonard.. great boxer.. nice guy.. some great fights.. probably most peoples favourite of the four.. but not for me...
hagler.. i know hes a great fighter.. will never forget hagler and hearns... but i never really got into marvin the way i did duran or hearns.. but still.. forever deserving of props for what he has done..
although we have enjoyed some great battles since these four faced eachother there has never been and might never be another four fighters renowned for fighting and held in the same regard as this fabulous four...
i cant wait till there is an attempt to measure up to this great piece of history!!
Peace

Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
What hurts Duran and the problem I have always had with him and this might sound unfair, but he lost to all the legends he fought. He beat Ray on a sort of bad night for Ray, but Ray came back and easily beat Duran twice.. And Hearns knocked him out, Hagler beat him, Benitez totally outclassed Duran. So Leonard,Hearns,Benitez and Hagler beat him and that is why I have a hard time rating him number one, but I did just on his lightweight reign, which was not that strong. But he had a good aura about him. Duran had faults which a good fighter like Pernell Whitaker would have been able to win.. Duran put his feet too wide apart. But he was great. Probblem with Roberto is that all the legends beat him. He beat the guys who skimmed the top like Moore and Barkley. But even Hearns who beat Virgil Hill didn't get the credit for beating Hill like Duran did for beating Barkley and Hill was a much more accomplished fighter than Barkley.
-
Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
Duran was older and a lot smaller in beating Barkley.
And yeah he went 15 rounds with Hagler while Hearns was finished in less time that it takes to watch a Butterbean fight.
-
Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
To me Duran was always a little overrated. And I know it is not good to go against the grain on a great fighter, But he lost to all the legends. So what puts him in such high company as top 15?? Beating Leonard? His lightweight reign was good but not better than say Hagler's middleweight reign since Hagler fought legends. Duran fought Buchanan and Dejesus and lost once to Dejesus. But when he fought the 80s legends he lost to all. That is not really something that puts a guy in the top 15.. Duran is one of those guys who can lose and lose big and people still give him 50 chances to win big fights, so when he wins one of those big fights people say, see look how great he is, he beat Moore. yet he never beat Hearns or Hagler or Benitez. Overrated in my mind. But I rated him first all time since I know everyone else does. If I had to rate the fighters with my own ideas I would go Hagler,Hearns,Duran, Leonard. And Leonard is low because he really didn't fight much. He had only 40 fights in his whole career. Hearns and Hagler have 67 fights total and Duran 114 or so.
-
Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
The Hearns fight was a war and the best action 3 round fight ever, The Hagler/Duran fight was a boring counterpunching fight. Fact is that Duran was outclassed by Benitez and Hearns beat Benitez easily. And what Hearns did to Duran in June 1984 was conclusive. Beating Barkley was not that impressive. I knew when that fight was signed that Duran could win. Barkley was a free swinging fighter but he beat a great fighter but was not great. Hearns beating Hill in my mind was alot more impressive. Hearns had only fought at lightheavy once before that and beat Hill impressively. A 10 time defending titlist and now on of the top defenders ever. You cannot compare Duran beating Iran Barkley to Hearns beating a titlist like Hill. Duran was overrated. He lost to all the legends except for Pipino Cueves who was washed up when Duran fought him in Jan. 1983.. Turn the facts how you want it. THe problem I always had with Duran was that his biggest wins in the 80s were against Moore and Barkley and not Benitez and Hearns and Hagler. Hearns beat Benitez, Hearns beat Cueves, Hearns beat Duran.
-
Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
Duran alot smaller in beating Barkley was perfect for him. He could duck alot of Iran's punches and then counter. He was fighting middleweight almost as long as Barkley was a middleweight. Duran could handle Iran. Iran lost everytime he defended a title. Iran's best win was against Hearns and that is all. HE got two of his titles from Hearns in what is a bad style matchup since no one thinks Iran could do to the other guys Hearns did. Duran gets all this credit. The guy fights Leonard and wins when Ray says he wants to fight Duran at Durans' game.. Well Ray messed up, But Ray comes back and beats Duran easy making Duran quit and later beats Duran easily right after Duran beats Iran Barkley. So Ray showed that Duran could be beat easily after Duran beat Iran. So that nullifies that fight, not for Duran fans. They act like Iran Barkley is Tyson. So after Ray , Duran fight on and fights Minchillo and then loses to Wilfred Benitez in a one sided fight. Wilfred was a former 140 pound titles so the size thing cannot be mentioned and to Duran fans this fight is never mentioned either. Why would it be.. So then Duran beats Cuevez in a good fight to be honest, and then fights Davey Moore who had 11 fights and had dental surgery that week. So now Duran fans mention that fight forever yet the Benitez and Laing fights are not. Fair enough, Duran moves up and fights Hagler and Hagler fights a counterpunching fight and still wins. Duran then moves back down and 7 months later gets demolished by Hearns. And this was not a one punch knockout, Duran was hit clean for 2 rounds and finished. Look on youtube if you think this fight was onepunch only. So Duran loses to Hearns and then retires for 2 years. Comes back on a Hearns undercard and fights Sims and then fights stiffs until Hearns who has been fighting contenders all these years, loses to Iran Barkley. Well then Duran people see how Barkley can beat beat by Duran and signs to fight him, Duran wins and then fights Ray and is outpointed easily. So losing to the legends and beating Moore and Barkley is that great? And at lightweight Dejesus and Buchanan cannot be compared to even Virgil Hill in my mind who Hearns beat when Virgil was undefeated. I brought out facts and the Duran fans will still mention how Duran beat Iran, yet he didn't beat anyone else.

Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
..... Anyway
Durans Career spanned from Ken Norton to Audley Harrison.
I have to respect that ;)
-
Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
Beating the best guys out there makes a guy the best. Duran lasted but he did not beat the best to be the best. He lasted and beat some good guys, but not to be the best in regards to Ray and Tommy and Marvin. Maybe compared to Dejesus and Buchanan. Duran lost to Wilfred Benitez easily. people forget. he lost to Kirkland Laing. Thomas Hearns, Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Robbie Sims .. What makes him the best? or even p4p 15.. Lightweight reign?

Re: Rate the Fantastic Four
Yeah Hearns is still fighting, I just looked that up, he beat John Long last year and a guy named Shannon Landberg in february 2006. Not exactly the quality of opposition he fought in his prime. Maybe he should retired. He went 9 rounds with Long and 10 with Landberg. Guys he would have knocked out in one round 20 years ago. His record is now 61-5-1
