Friday Fight Night - SRBR - Jon Thaxton v Lee Meager BBBofC Lightweight Title

Evning all...kick off for this fight is 10pm Uk time, so in about 25 minutes or so and it's live on Sky Sports one, so settle down, pour yourself a fine old brandy, and lets get ready for a war. Or at least a decent fight between two good British lighteights as we see whether it will be the youth and potential of Lee Meager or the powerful experience of Jon Thaxton that leaves the ring with the British title.

As for the SRBR, i'm afraid it will be the dry, staid words of a sober man tonight, as I have two days mountainbiking planned for the weekend, and beer + exercise = puking on the side of the track, which is not a good day out!
Anyhow, here's the lowdown on both fighters:

Lee Meager (20-1-1, 7KO) : Having claimed the title back in May with an impressive stoppage of unbeaten Dave Stewart, Meager is a rising star in British boxing, and is on the up at the moment. Quick and busy, Meager doesn't pack the biggest punch but is game and will likely hit Thaxton with plenty of accurate shots. His only defeat came in a questionable decision against Danny Hunt for the English title back in 2004, but since then is undefeated. Meager is the favourite for the fight, and at 28 has time to develop even further.

Jonothan Thaxton (30-7-0, 17 KOs) : Thaxton is certainly the more experienced, having turned pro in 1992 when only 18, and he packs a bigger punch than his younger opponent tonight. Also Thaxton is no mug, and having lasted 12 rounds against Ricky Hatton has demonstrated his durability. However, he has suffered from shoulder problems over recent years, having racked up 9 wins on the trot since losing to Eamonn Magee in 2002. In his last fight, also in May, Thaxton worked a good 10 rounds to cruise past undefeated Argentinian Jorge Daniel Miranda, so stamina shouldn't be too much of a problem in this bout.

Well fight time is here. Jon Thaxton making his ring walk, he looks confident and pumped for this one. Looks muscular and strong, though waiting for Meager to get his a**e down the coridor.
Meager hiding under the hood of his robe, which is very pretty, but he looks to have a few more nerves, but he looks happy to be getting some support, a quiet crowd on the whole though. Gives Thaxton the eye. Looks thinner than his opponent, but he's also two inches taller. Froch standing in Meager's corner, let's just hope Meager doesn't try to imitate his style cause Thaxton has the power to punish.

Let's get into it already, it is taking a bit of time.

Round 1:

Thaxton looking for the big shots early. Throwing to the body, but only finding the guard upstairs. Meager staying at distance, not looking to get inside at all. Cagey stuff, though Meager does get caught on the way in. Good uppercut by Meager, some good hoooks connect too. Thaxton connects with a nice combo. Good guard from Meager, loooking for that uppercut as Thaxton ducks down. Hook from Thaxton.

Pretty even so far, all the points intact, 10-10

Round 2:

Thaxton having some success to the body, good hook attles Meager. Covers up and weathers the storm, who failed to get through the guard. Meager comes back jabbing. Good straight right from Meager. Thaxton looking to come in at speed. Jab gets through from Thaxotn. Good uppercut from Thaxton followed by a straight left. Good combo of hooks from Meager, but he's cut above the right eye. Thaxton finding the arms of Meager a lot, but he's looking good so far.

Thaxton 20-19

Round 3:

Great right hook connects as Meager comes in, Meager looks really rattled. An uppercut and hook in reply from Meager. Meager is connecting with jabs, but not hurting Thaxton, another straight right from him. Good left hook left jab from thaxton gets through. Another left rattles Meager, Thaxton is running this one. Good hook uppercut from Meager, but Thaxton replies with a jab. Decent right hook from Meager. He's bruised under the left eye as well.

30-28 to Thaxton. He's throwing a lot at the moment, but his connection rate isn't great. He's throwing so many that those that do connect are still numerous.

Round 4:

Good hook from Meager. Uppercut from Thaxton. Switches to an orthodox style does Thaxton, but got caught coming in. Thaxton reminds me a lot of Ryan Rhodes, a very similar style. Good right rocks Thaxton back. Good hooks from Meager, straights rock Thaxton. His accuracy is good and throwing mr now. Good right from Thaxton. Good right uppercut from Meager, but Thaxton still looking pretty comfortable. Good left from Meager and right from Thaxton connect simultaneously.

Meager grins going back to the corner, he got this one.
39-38 to Thaxton

Round 5:

Goood staight left from Meager. Thaxton still finding the arms a lot. Two jabs connect from Thaxton . Hard body hooks from meager. Left hooks hit home from Thaxton. Chopping right catches Thaxton. Body shots and jabs piling up points for Thaxton. Great uppercut from Thaxton, but Meager's chin looks very good, he comes back with a hook of his own. Ncie left hook straight right gets through on thaxton who's hanging his hands low.

Thaxton working well, takes this one again.

49-47

Round 6:

Very entertaining so far, Meager looking battered up a bit. Two right hooks from Thaxton. Good hooks from Meager open up a cut on Thaxton. He paws at it . Good jabs focus on the cut from Meager. Thaxton looking a little rattled now, and Meager has asomething to ficus on. Thaxtons hiding and doging a bit now. Another very good uppercut from Thaxton. Great right hook from Thaxton catches Meager off baland, he stumbles sideways but remains upright.

Despite the cut, Thaxton has this one again.

59-56

Round 7:

Good jabs get through from Thaxton, hook reply from Meager. Very low from Meager, warned by the ref. Thaxton a little more cagey this round. Catches Meager on the counter with a right hook. Good hook from Meager. Couple of uppercuts get through from him too. Good left hook from Meager again. Jab and hook go through for Meager, his movement's a little better, though Thaxton looks to be slowing a tiny bit. Good right hook from Thaxton, but Meager goes through. Thaxton returns with a jab at the bell.

Very tight round, i'll give it as a tie.
69-66 to Thaxton

Round 8:

Thaxton still busy with the jab. Good uppercut straight one-two from Thaxton. Two straights from Meager. Meager coming forward more and trowing more. Good right left hook from Thaxton. Straight from Meager connects. Thaxton's strong jab is paying dividends for Thaxton. Meager right hook. Thaxton starting to breather a little harder, straight rights from Meager. Another chopping right for Meager.Thaxton's punches looking a little less sharp now. Two good straights from Meager as Thaxton ducks down.

Meager takes this one IMO
78-76 Thaxton. Punch stats are 173 for Thaxton, 85 for Meager so far.

Ropund 9.

Meager's straights connect. Very good uppercu from Thaxton. Nice jab hits Meager again. Hurtful straight from Meager, but Thaxton keeping going. Body hooks from Meager, but the jabs from Thaxton still adding up. Good hooks from Thaxton connect. Upercut from Meager. Meager ducks a jab and hits back with a good straight. Good jab knocks out Meager's gumshield. Sky's boy have Thaxton further ahead. They trade in the middle, exchanging straights. Meager starting to look a little worried in the corner, Thaxton looks calm.

Thaxton probably edges it
88-85

Round 10:

Good hooks open from Thaxton. His jab is still working for him. Nice body hook from Meager. Two chopping rights from Meager. Another good straight right, and an uppercut. Thaxton replies with a hook to the side of the head. Plety of jabs from Thaxtons. Hooks and jabs from Thaxton, putting in the effort again. Good right from Meager. Thaxtons last minute take the round for him.

98-94 Meager needs a KO or at least a knockdown.

Round 11:

Good right from Meager. Plenty of jabs from Thaxton. He's just piling up those points. Meager now looking tired, but he needs some big mover now. Bdy hooks connect from Thaxton. Meager swings to the body. Thaxton returns with more jabs. Nice left hook from Meager, but Thaxton still looks comfortable. Hook from Thaxton rocks Meager back himself.

Another Thaxton round....Meager's going to hear those words..."You're going to need a knockout".

108-103 to Thaxton

Round 12:

Hooks from Thaxton cut through Meager's defenct a left finally puts him down, and Meager falls straight on his arse. Thaxton coming forward. Meager's shipping everything that's coming at him, hooks and jabs get Meager. Thaxton sits back....waits for Meager to come forward, Meager catches Thaxton with some hooks, but Thaxton uisn't fazed. There is no way the judges can give anything but a Thaxton win. Great performance byThaxton, he's awkward, switch hitting, and packs a good punch.

Thaxton finishes with a 10-8

118-111, and Thaxton dominated to be honest. Good win for him

Meager is poor

Very entertaining fight all in all, the judges are taking their time here, Thaxton and Meager exchange a hug. Sky's Glenn Mcrory has it 118-109.
Thaxton landed 270 to Meager's 142.

Scores:
UD 118-109; 118-110; 119-110 for John Thaxton. This means an awful lot to him, there's tears of joy there, he is delighted, it's good to see a champion where it means everything to him. He looked better, prepared well, had the tactics and deserves that Lonsdale belt, and it'll be very difficult for someone to tear that off him.

I'm not entirely sure how the ref could have dealt with it, because to disqualify Barker for throwing one punch when he had said "Stop", especially with a reflex punch like that one. It was a huge punch and Samuels had his hands down....wasn't he warned at the start to protect himself at all times? I'm sure someone with a better knowledge of the rules can tell me whether there was aother option for the ref than letting it stand though. Reckon samuels will stick around for more fights?

Not sure mate. It wasnt a loss in the truest sense and he was having a decent arguement with a good fighter. He is 30 odd though. I think the ref can either DQ Barker, call it a no contest or award him(Barker) the win, which he did. Personally I thought Parris was slow to call break, as soon as Barkers glove hit the deck he should have been on it, I think Samuels managed to try and get a couple more shots off before the call came.
