Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?... Team Kessler Speak!!!
Interesting views here, and for those that didn't already know....
The Manfredo fight has been delayed by one month (April 7th) due to the Rugby at the Millenium Stadium :(

Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?...
Cos hes over rated and all talk
this guy hes fighting next is a chump
calling out others is just cheap talk
-
Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?...
its because he rates taylor higher than kessler and taylor (being a yank) is obviously more well known in the states.
-
Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?...
I can't see Taylor troubling Joe in any department.
Joe is bigger, stronger, faster and Taylors defense is open to straight punches imo.
Will be a great matchup IF Taylor doesn't go the Winky route.
Calzaghe beats him by way of stoppage.
-
Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?...
At the end of the day, it's quite simple, beating Taylor would get him vast recognition in the biggest boxing market in the world, the United States. And while I don't agree with it, a big-money fight against Kessler would not lead to other big money fights, while beating Taylor would see the big names lining up to fight him.
-
Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?...
Cuz he's scared of Kessler. It's that simple.
-
Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?...
This is no way in defence of calzaghe because I think fighting Manfredo is inexcusable. I think Joe most definitely has his finger OFF the pulse, he genuinely feels that Taylor is the way to go and will lead him to untold riches fighting god knows who.......anybody? He is fixated on American opponents and I don't think it really matters how good they are. It goes without saying that FW is happy for him to take on an American middleweight who didn't have the engine to keep up with an outgunned light middle, rather than a big lump of a super middleweight.
-
Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?...
Im a fan of Joe, but I'm now even pissed off with his choice of opponent (manfredo). I'll forgive him if he does fight Taylor though, for me it's a much bigger fight than Kessler since Taylor is proven on the world stage by fighting elite fighters already.
IMO Calzaghe hasn't got much to gain by fighting Kessler. If Joe were to beat him, the same people on this board who trash Lacy now will simply start trashing Kessler by calling him a limited upright european fighter who hasn't been tested.
-
Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?...
I don't agree that's the case (VD) and think HBO have more to do with him not fighting Kessler, also the fact that the Manfredo fight is now on 7/4/07 could possibly screw his chances with Taylor if he picks up any hand injuries.
And let's face it,it's a big possibility.
-
Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?...
The funny thing about untold riches is that if he was to fight Taylor I don't seeing him getting more than 3.4 million. So what untold riches is he talking about?

Agreed.
The only problem is...it's a shame that it's gotta be like that because Taylor is regarded as being on shakey ground...& I'm on the side that thinks he's an underacheiver.
Joe's volume would pretty much shut Taylor out.

Thats what Im talking about, he is living in the past. Even if he hammers Taylor who is he going to fight? everyone will still want Kessler unless he gets derailed, so he might as well go straight for him.

Good we agree. FIGHT KESSLER, CALZAGHE! FACE YOUR NIGHTMARE! 3.4 MILLION WILL MAKE THOSE BRUSIES HEAL UP REAL FAST.

Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?...
Didn't Fight Academy offer Calzaghe a £1.5m, career high pay day, to move up and face Woods?
Guess Joes SCARED of Clinton too. :-\
ANYWAY, even if the Kessler offer was real (has it been reported anywhere outside of the Danish press?), does anybody honestly think FW is gonna give up promotional rights to the fight? ;D
And didn't Kessler already turn down FWs offer of £1.5m? Wonder why?
-
Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?...
I'm of the opinion that if he beats Kessler, Kessler will just be labelled as an average european fighter. Bit like Vitali Tyspko
-
Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?...
I don't really think Joe is scared of Kessler, I just think that Joe is a little misguided in what he thinks will get him popularity in the US. He wants to be seen on big US TV broadcasts but beating Manfredo wouldn't get him any respect and people over here in the US that have never seen JoeCal won't say "Man, that JoeCal is something else, who is this guy?" they're gonna say "well, at least, Manfredo tried." JoeCal beating Kessler and coming over here as the undisputed champ would be a better option.

If Warren wasn't so damn scared he could try making Kessler an offer. It's not like it's writen anywhere that Warren HAS to give up promotional rights. The thing is there's only been an offer from Kessler to Calzaghe, not the other way arround.
But obviously Warren has no intentions of making any such offer - Kessler might jump at it, and then what kind of mess would Calzaghe be in.

I think you're right mate, FW doesn't want/need Kessler, yet ;)

Oh and I think its quite plain why JC would rather fight Taylor, more fame, more $ and less danger. In history, beating the man who 'dethroned' Hopkins looks way more rosy than a win against Kessler, even though we all know he's the most dangerous. Still doesn't mean that the fight with kessler won't happen yet, but why not strike when the iron is hot?

Maybe it can't happen in Vegas because no US TV-slots can be made (HBO decided NOT to show any more of Kessler??)
Wonder if the talk of Taylor not wanting to fight Calzaghe could possibly change their (HBO's) attitude towards Kessler.

Kess has already proven to be much more than an average euro fighter.
I honestly would have love to have seen him handle Tyspko though. Can't wait to see him fight Andrade.

Calzaghe stated on UK tv last night that HBO were not at all interested in his Mandatory fighter (how this works i don't know)
Looks like THEY are pulling the strings as to who he fights ;)

Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?...
I think it may have more to do with this statement ;)
"I'll prepare for a hard 12 rounds just like I did when I beat Jeff Lacy. I'm so close to making history and can't afford to let anyone (Manfredo) take that away."
Victory would enable Calzaghe to join two legends of the fight game with 20 successful world title defences. Former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes and ex-middleweight title-holder Bernard Hopkins both reached that landmark.

He has to me and you. But some fickle people will most certainly refer to him as over rated which seems to be a term used as losely as 'world class' when referring to fighters who are up and coming. Amir Kahn and Jeff lacy are perfect examples.
-
Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?...
Because he could easily beat Taylor but would be beaten by Kessler.

Warren's claim that he'd made a 1.5 mill offer to Kessler (and Beyer), came up when he was pressured by journalists as to why Kessler-Calzaghe wasn't made. He just claimed an offer had been made at some unspecified point in the past. No further detail.
Kessler's manager immediately went public saying it was a total lie (no offer ever received or heard of) - but that they were quite willing to discuss it.
I don't think there's been any mention of it from Warren since then.
Of course it's word against word. It's up to you who you wanna believe. Neither promotors are ppl i'd put too much faith in. Still i'd like to know just a minimum of detail about any such offer before taking Fwanks word for it. (like even what year it was supposedly made)
And if he was serious - why not extend the offer and make it public to put pressure on Kessler?
Something fishy about this "oh by the way we've made Kessler an offer in the past - but let's not talk about it any more" routine.

Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?... Team Kessler Speak!!!
So Kessler ducked Lacy?
No wonder Palle is so pissed off now ;D
-
Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?... Team Kessler Spea
There isn't a lot of what he says that is untrue ;)
Bet he'd fight Lacy Now ;D
-
Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?... Team Kessler Speak!!!
Nah as Palle says "Lacy is a bum." "Calzaghes win over him is worthless"
See Kessler/Palle made a good move ducking not fighting the bum Lacy back when they could have...Obviously beating Lacy didn't do much for Calzaghes career ;)
-
Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?... Team Kessler Speak!!!
You got it wrong there Fenster. (so what's new ;D)
Lacy CALLED OUT Kessler when negotiations with Calzaghe stalled. But when Kessler responded with an actual offer for a fight in either Denmark or US, Lacy stopped mentioning Kessler and went back to the negotiating table with Calzaghe. (Kessler was supposed to have been injured at the time, so i guess Lacy thought it was "safe" to call hi out, to put pressure on Calzaghe).
Some will argue Kessler's demands were too steep considering his bargaining-position. He offered 1.5 mill for a fight in Denmark and asked the same, if the fight was to be in the US. Made a big point out of making the offer PUBLIC just to avoid misunderstandings such as yours (and to slap Lacy for trying to "use" Kessler in negotiations).
Lacy never made any kind of offer. Had he been serious he could at least have made a counter-offer, if he was unhappy with what Kessler offered. But he didn't. He stopped mentioning Kessler too.
So if any of the two did any "ducking", it wasn't Kessler.

Lacy's camp aknowledged at a press-conference days later that there'd been an offer for the amount of money Palle stated, but that Kessler's demands were ridiculous. They (Lacy's ppl) completely neglected mentioning the part about the offer being two-way (Kessler willing to pay the same amount, if Lacy travelled). I guess somehow it didn't fit the Lacy "I'll fight anyone anywhere" rep that everybody seemed to buy into at the time.
I remember at the time catching huge amounts of flak from Lacy-fans when bringing it up. They told me i was stupid to believe the offer was genuine and that "no small-time danish promotor" could deliver on that kind of offer. Well guess what - Within a year Kessler offered and paid Beyer the same ámount to fight in Denmark. Don't see what makes the Beyer case different from Lacy.
These days Lacy is viewed in a somewhat more realistic light. Back then a lot of ppl simply refused to believe Kessler might believe in his chances against Lacy - and felt that that alone made the offer unbeleaveable. I think today many would see it differently.

Re: Why Is Calzaghe Ducking Kessler But Calling Out Taylor?... Team Kessler Speak!!!
Palle is going to have to eat his own words soon, because Calzaghe is going have to fight Kessler eventually. The thing is, Kessler just isn't anything special. I really beleive this. He looks just like your run of the mill contender at every division. I mean Manny Siaca was able to make him look ugly at times. Manny Siaca. He fights really bad off his back foot. He leaves himself open for 10 years everytime he throws a jab. He doesn't vary his combinations much at all. He moves straight ahead constantly, doesn't cut the ring off very well. He's just like Lacy. Imposing, spectacular at times but has so much work to do around the edges. Now I think that Kessler and Lacy are the future of the division but...I haven't seen a single thing to see what makes anyone think Kessler can beat Calzaghe. Kessler - Lacy (healthy and focused Lacy) would be a much better fight because it's one Kessler has a chance to win and look good in.
Hate to be so down but it's the truth.
And Calzaghe I think recognizes that and no matter what Palle says, Manfredo is 10 times the NAME of Kessler. No one knows who Kessler is. My friends little sister knows who Manfredo and Mora are.

Well if you've actually gone through the trouble of seeing Kessler's fights, then fair enough you have those views. But it seems by far the most ppl who actually get to watch more than a 30 sec clip of Kessler, reach the conclussion that he's for real.
As for the Siaca fight, no surprice i don't agree with you. Don't recall Siaca giving Kessler ANY real problems. Are you refering to anything specific (rounds, stylistic issues or such)?
