Just watched Clotty/Margarito again is it me or was Tony Lucky that night?
I was sitting here watching the margarito Clottey fight again on Showtime in demand.....Is it me or if Clotty did not break his hand I think Margarito would have lost his title?.....Or is Clotty just better then realized?...IMO Clotty has a future of potential title in his hands?...Just curious of everyones opp on the fight?

as much as i dont like margarito, i was watching the fight and prior to him breaking his hand i couldnt help but think that he was saving himself for the mid to late rounds and then clottey broke his hand and i knew the fight was over then.
wouldnt have mattered how many rounds clottey won, because of the way the judges were scoring the fight it was gonna have to be clottey by ko, no matter what
but i was real happy for the first 3rd of the fight ;D
and one good thing came of this fight, nobody thinks that margarito is any kind of a threat to mayweather, anymore

Agreed the scoring in that fight was awful....The one judge I think did not give Clotty a single round or only one.....It was much closer even with the bad hand then scored...IMO Clotty did not hurt his hands he would have won that fight...OR Should have won that fight

Nope,not luck,heart and grit. He spraigned his wrist hence allll those arm punches and he still wore Clottey down. Secondly,this was Clottey's shot at the big time,he should have still hit with the hand,just as Gatti etc would/have. Third and most importantly,that was the worst of Tony and firstly,he STILL got the W and secondly,he beat a great fighter for it. To just disregard everything Margarito has done at WW for one night is poor judgement firstly and secondly,I would bet my house on Margarito winning had he been 100% fit..why? Because even with all those arm punches,his body shots TOTALLY wore Joshua down,Clottey looked echausted by the 9th,had Tony been putting full power into them,he would have been doing even more damage.
I'mm not going to lie,I was dissappointed in Margarito becaues it was apoor showing by his standards but the ring rust,the injuries and the lack of sparring where bound to show. I like to take the positives too,the fact that he took SUCH a dangerous fight as a tune up and won and the fact that he showed the heart and the grit to come through,although you could plainly see he was not happy when he won,he was not the usualy smiley TOny.
That's my take,and 1 bad performance does notput a dent on the 8 years of being a recking machine at WW,I still think he beats everyone at WW, and hopefully he'll prove that firstly against my other boy Cotto and then make Williams shut the F up.

I thought Margarito looked ok, sure he was wide open to be hit and second to the punch in round 2 -4 (Tony won the first round) but he had still turned it around by round 6 or so.
Personally, even though Clottey started well, he ran out of gas. He may have hurt his hand but it was his stamina or lack of that caused him to spend extended periods on the ropes being beaten up.
I think, much like Vitali against Lewis, that Clottey's chances have been exaggerated because people like to think what might have been.
Fact is Margarito was wearing Clottey down from about round 5 onwards.
Plenty of fighters hurt their hands during a fight, I don't recall it having the effect of making a fighter look exhausted for the remainder of the fight.
Calzaghe broke his hand against Ashira in round 4 and still won all the remaining rounds with his other hand.
Not saying that the hand didn't hamper Clottey but it also gave him an excuse.
He lost the fight because he gassed out, not because he hurt his hand.

He was beyond lucky. I think if Clottey wouldn't have hurt his hand he would of stopped him late. It was obvious Bob Arum was going to let Margarito lose on points. Paul Williams will finish this Margarito.talk.

I thought Margarito's performance was very disappointing. He is an effective offensive fighter, but not dynamic by any means. He has huge holes in his defense and Clottey landed every punch in the book thru the first 4 rounds.
Margarito should be a considerable underdog against either Cotto or Williams, and I would have a hard time seeing Margarito win even a single round against Mayweather.

Clottey is good. Better then Margarito in fact. That's my opinion. I was really hoping for Clottey - Williams. I wish I could have seen the fight. I was at a house party the night of the fight, got on my friend's computer and saw the round by round and read it a little bit. Bit gone that night though :-\

Clottey is a good fighter but after Margarito beat him,I don't think it's fair to say Clottey is better. He;s technically more sound,but most fighters are technically more sound than Tony,he makes up for it with other variables...such as his heart,ridiculous stamina and great placement of punches amongst other things.

I agree,like I said earlier,that Tony looked poor but I am not willing to overlook everything he has done at 147 in favour of 1 fight and Clottey is a tough tough opponent but Tony won,end of. As poor as Margarito looked,he gets credit for taking such a tough tough fight,tougher than the fights most peeps have taken at 147(Williams PBF etc,Clottey is better than nearly all their opposition)

I agree on Clotty being the toughest opp....He hits hard also....He was given a bad rap in the Baldo fight....IMO Clotty might be a future belt holder...his chin is good enough to go with his offense...

Yep,if I remember correctly,I had Clottey up 7rounds to 3 against Baldo,he was winning comfortably but the DQ was correct in my opinion,Clottey was far far too dirty. Also,you look at Clottey and tell me 1 fighter he would not give problems to at 147? Like I said,Clottey is tougher and a better fighter than Sharmba,Baldo,and better than Williams opponents Santos Pakau etc and this was a voluntary defence for Tony,he did not need to take this fight but chose to do so to prove he is willing to fight anyone firstly and secondly,to prove he is one of the best@ ww. He should be commended for taking such a dangerous low reward fight,I didn't see many other WW;s queuing up to give Joshua a chance.....
Clottey would already be a belt holder had someone else given him a chance,look at his attributes:fast,works head and body,great chin,good power,excellent counters and just seems like a tough tough guy.

Margarito was definently lucky.
I was sure that excuses would follow after that performance...& they did...either way...he fought like he usually did & he would have lost had Clotty not injured himself during the bought.
It still makes me chuckle that the great Margarito is the ender of Floyd's career.

I think its ridiculous for people to say they know what would have happened if Clottey didn't break his hand.
Nobody knows for sure what would have happened, well that is except for the people that don't like Margarito.
Margarito starts slow, and comes on as the fight progresses. That's what he does. Its not like its a novel concept for pressure fighters to be outboxed early by the "boxer" and then come on late. Like Bilbo said, Clottey had stamina problems, not just hand problems. Clottey may well have won but Margarito was the stronger guy down the stretch, hand problems or not.

The thing is...Clottey wouldn't have allowed Margarito to come on had he not broken or injured that hand...nothing ridiculous there. I've watched that fight several times...& it's damned hard to beat a man one handed. He was handling Margarito's power & wearing his ass out up to the point.

Well, guess well just have to disagree. I just don't think its that simple. I don't have any idea if Margarito's injury was bullshit, that's not my point, I just think its impossible to say that Margarito wouldn't have come on. He's a slow starter, he usually gets going and just outworks people. Clottey, hand or not, was gassed through the middle and late rounds, while Margarito wasn't. I don't know if Margarito would have outworked him if the hand wasn't hurt, but since Clottey had stamina problems its definitely a possibility.

Sorry Wack,you know you're my man but you're waaaaaaaay off the mark here. Firstly,Margarito doesn't fight like that allll the time,like I said,it was Tony's worst performance in a while as evidenced by all the arm punches which he was using due to injury and secondly,it's dissappointing to hear such a great fan of boxing use such wondrous assumptions...Clottey would have won? Rreally? How would you know that? Also, I didn't hear Clottey say Tony was lucky etc etc......so that argument has no basis on anything....
Tony took a fight more dangeorus than PBF.Williams and most of his nearest rivals have and won...when nearly everyone here thought he would lose...and he had only fought 2 mins all year,injured an ankle before the fight and injured a wrist during the fight hence the long layoff now....
And no one said he would end Floyd's carer but if Margarito looked that terrible,it makes Floyd's choice of passingup an easy $8mill plus PPV $$$ look even more silly does it not....

First off, when did Baldomir win rounds against Floyd? I must've missed them, because I had it a straight 120-108, as did the HBO crew.
Mayweather could school Margarito with weights around his ankles.
It's not totally and completely untrue to say Margarito should be a considerable underdog against either Williams or Cotto. Margarito showed no defensive skills whatsoever. His idea of blocking punches was to block them with his face. Williams and Cotto go about their offensive attacks in different ways, but they are both very talented offensive fighters, much more talented than Margarito. If Margarito is going to get hit by every punch in the book by Clottey (before Clottey hurt his hand), then he is not going to be able to avoid the punches of Cotto and Williams.

Agreed , Tony is slow as molasses , especially for a 147 lb fighter. Clottey was doing an old fashioned tap dance on his ass for the first 4 , obviously hurt his hand bad, and that was that.. but yeah your on the mark ! ;) O0
