Marvin Hagler v Roberto Duran – Revisited

WBA, WBC and IBF World Middleweight Championship

This is my third instalment in the Revisited series.


It was 1983 and Duran had come off a remarkable victory against Davey Moore at Madison Square Garden claiming his THIRD world title. Many had written of the great Hands of Stone and didn’t give him a chance, but Duran proved them all wrong.

Hagler was the dominant Middleweight champion and had beaten anybody who was put in his way, Hagler believed the Middleweight crown belonged to him and nobody could take it away.

So it had been confirmed that Duran would take on Hagler, the fight was made. Hagler was a natural big Middleweight, and Duran started his career at Lightweight, it could be argued the fight was a ‘mismatch’. Rightly so Hagler was made the clear favourite and Duran at 33 was considered past it and Hagler would end the career of Duran. As ever, leading upto the fight Duran was intimidating Hagler, the bigger man and it worked.

As they squared of in the ring it was clear that Hagler felt intimidated by Duran, maybe he thought that Hands of Stone was still very dangerous, either way Hagler went onto win a very close decision.

The irony is that even in defeat Duran became victorious, Duran became the only person ever to take Hagler the full 15 rounds and even then the official scorecards showed Duran leading by 1 point on all 3 cards going into the last 2 rounds, so if Duran could have one 1 of the last 2 rounds he would have been declared champion, also Duran from the 3rd round onwards fought with a damaged right hand, the hand that has knocked out so many opponents.

Hagler was to say after the fight that “everyone’s talking about Duran, but I won”, “he is a Legend” said Hagler.

It was a close fight, but what amazes me to this day is that Duran lost but came out as the moral winner, in the eyes of the public, boxing world he was the winner.

Duran had no business being in the ring with any Middleweight, let alone Hagler, and he more than held his own, no, he nearly beat Hagler and that was a miracle in it’s self.

There was to be one more time when nobody would give a 37 year old Duran a chance, but once again Duran would prove them wrong and cement his Legacy and greatness FOREVER!

yea it was very razor thin going into 13th but hagler won last 3 or 2 rounds if i remember right and that got him the nod

Yeh I had it about level after 12, shows how great Duran was, moving up all the way from LW to match the GOT Middleweight

I respect duran he always had heart and was a mean ass bitch in the ring ..... a guy told me once when i went to see cintron fight david estrada i met a guy named manny and he told me he personally knew duran and said duran lost the 2nd leanord fight for 15 mill dont know how possible that is

I heard he quit coz he was desperate for a sh1t

imo leonard would of won anyway he was making duran frustrated and ect he got into durans mind but on hagler and duran fight yea he showed alot of heart just a shame he gassed out on last 3 rounds because he would of been and even bigger legend than he is now if he would of won atleast 2 out of last 3 rounds  8)

I love Duran, But Hagler won the fight easy, in fact the fight was a stinker.

Can anybody confirm the following: I understand that Hagler's WBC belt was taken away from him after this fight because they (the WBC) had removed 15 round fights and only held 12 round fights and as they considered Duran to be up after 12 rounds they took the belt from Hagler, the reason they coudn't give the belt to Duran was because officially he lost the bout - can anyone shed some light on this? ???

I know that Hagler got stripped of his ibf and wba belts coz he fought sugar ray.

Aparently Duran laid down the blueprint to beat Hagler with a somewhat outof character retreating approach....

Im saying this while ive never actually watched either the Duran-Hagler/ Hagler-Leonard fights... Just going off what id read else where.

Any1 wish to shed some light?

Yes, that's correct.

Leonard has gone on record to say after he watched the Duran v Hagler fight, he learnt from Duran the way to beat Hagler, although in IMO Leonard didn’t beat Hagler!

So.... What your saying.... Is it was actually the wrong idea? ;D

LOL – That’s fine,

I think the idea was correct, just the person executing it was wrong – ohhhh low blow……. No I think the Hagler/Leonard fight was very close but I had Hagler ahead only just.

But if we consider after 12 rounds Hagler v Leonard was close but v Duran it’s official Duran was ahead.
