what do u do about sparring nerves? i start feeling sick before sparring so i try hype myself up as much as i can!
I used to get sparring nerves... Im not entirely sure why but its a comfort thing in my opinion..
Before i sparr i dont think about bieng nervous or any of that..Im thinking.. what do i want to do in sparring tonight..And if im sparring with one of the really good lads..I am perhaps a little..But until youve done that first round you wont cure that..Everytime i step in i think right..Start off.. just keep calm..
stick the jab and watch..Look for parries and keep the feet moving and hands up...
I just keep it simple until i find my rythym..
But in all fairness i enjoy sparring too much to be nervous... Theres really nothing about sparring that makes me a little worried.. All the lads in my gym are bad fighters.. bad as they come..
so ive always got work to do.. But even things like getting marked up and hurt are fine by me..I like to come home with a nice bruise every now n then..
I mean sometimes you feel stupid about slipping or looking ugly in the ring but at the end of the day..If you spar the best you can then thats nothing..
I just sujest that you keep it basic let yourself know that you like your style ..Youve got it down and if you just build it up and commit to sparring properly you'll get better and better and really enjoy it..
Its important you keep whats best for you though..Dont go off trying to fight like roy jones floyd mayweather or anyone else..Just keep it simple and adapt your style to what's best for you..
Good luck.

the thing is tommorow i have to spar a guy who is a 2 time aba champ im nervous as hell, i just cant stop thinking about it.
You dont HAVE to spar anyone man. If you dont feel comfortable, just say no. But it would be a good learning experience. For example, I've been boxing for a little less than a month. Last week, I got into the ring with a former Golden Gloves State Champ, 25 pounds heavier than me, who's been boxing for years..... Didnt get nervous a bit. However, I got my ass handed to me. He caught me with a good uppercut when I let my jab hang out too long. Put me down to one knee on the canvas, and my jaw still hurts. But I took it as a learning experience. I've sparred 3 times since then, and needless to say, I bring my jab right back to guard position every time now.
Also, if this guy is experienced as you say, he should understand your level of boxing ability, and act accordingly. Unless he's some kinda "prick" ;)
Dont worry about it my friend..Quote:

I sparr a lad called nathan at my gym most weeks.. Alot of losses on his record but they werent for nothing the kid is mental good.. He is slick as they come and a real powerful hitter..They regard him as one of the best in the country aparently because in his last three fights he fought something like a two time aba champion..Some other sort of british or english champ and some guy with an immense record and beat them all... The thing is it took all those losses to mould himself into the fighter he is now..
And he is something special undoubtably..
But the point is that he's a real humble lad.. Sometimes they say to him..Just use the left..Work on your defence.. Throw both hands but i want to see you rolling and slipping puches and working the jab....
You see they dont stick you in there to get hurt..
They want you in with this kid so that you get a good workout and build up your experiance asmuch you can...He knows all the tricks and they want him to test you and keep you moving keep you thinking.. keep you working..
This guy is gona bring the best out in you and they know it..Whilst at the same time.. You might not be in the same class as him..But he can work on other things like defence and stuff..
But do not worry... Just go in there and fight smart and do yourself proud mate
Cc Peace.

Relentless, this might be harsh but someone has to be honest with you. Find a new sport.
you know why your nervous??? cause you about to get into a fight ! once you understand that, there is nothing to worry about ! so relax ! ;)
the samurai were excellent warriors in Japan during the 12th century , one main reason was, they embraced the fact that death might occur in battle , as opposed to being scared of it. O0
Lords thats true, I dont mind dying I just dont want to be there when it happens
;D heheQuote:

Lol chill von....
Relentless you keep at it mothersmoker!! ..You aint quittin on nothing..
Just work on everything new you learn until you feel you are completely confident in your capabilities..
Once your skill starts picking up then you'll start to enjoy sparring and forget about the nerves..
Dont think this aint the sport for me or nothin..You want it you work at it..You'll get where you want..
You aint a pussy..Your just inteligent enough to seek advice for something 100% of people get when they start out and only 10% are smart enough and brave enough to ask..

Tito, I'm doing the bad cop thing, or you could call it tough love. 8)

You are one pretty motherfucker :-X :lickish:
While on topic of sparring, I have a couple questions.
1) With proper gear, is there really much a chance of getting hurt? ie, more than cuts and bruised?
2) I really would like to join a boxing gym, but I really only have interest in sparring. Will trainers allow that? I have enough equipment to train on my own at home, and it would save me time and money to train at home.
Thanks a lot.
#1 this guy on the news said there was a chance of thunderstorms in the forecast ;)Quote:

ahhh mate i got back from training about an hour ago...
Like i mentioned earlier..What works great for me is..Before i spar..i say tonight i want to do this..
And tonight it was circling opponents and sticking the jab following with the right hand from time to time ..
And also things like move left..Jab jab jab..Stop step right and throw a left hook...
I landed a completly crazy shot against one of my partners ..and fooling aside..this kid is slick..
It was one of those shots you heard as well as saw.. Moving well certainly works wonders for me..
Until i gas out ;) :lickish:

To answer the second question, I really doubt most places would let you just spar, especially if you are just starting out. Also you need to be sure that if you are training at home you are receiving a complete workout, often people think they are doing a lot at home but don't realize how many different areas of the body they aren't working enough. My advice is to at least see what kind of workouts the gym has its fighters use and if you still want to do it at home emulate what they do instead of just picking a few exercizes to do at home. I used to skateboard alot and was really good, was sponsored when I was younger. In skateboarding I was able to learn on my own because you didnt need to see how you looked in order to see if you were doing it right, you simply know when you landed the trick. Boxing has been a huge difference because no matter how good you feel you are hitting the bag or moving your feet, there is no assuarance you are doing it correctly, not untill you have a trainer there to let you know what you are doing right and what is wrong. You don't want to end up with bad techniques that will be hard to change later down the road.Quote:

To answer both questions...
1. Yes. You can still get hurt. In my first 3 weeks of boxing, I have had a black eye (not bad, just a tiny bruise), my nose has bled (again, not bad, I was still able to spar for two more rounds), and I got cracked so hard in the chin that I went down to one knee, and my jaw still hurts 1 1/2 weeks later as i write this. Dont get me wrong, I'm not getting my ass kicked every time, I'm dishin out my fair share as well. Just shows that you can still get hurt, even if your doing well.
While these are only minor injuries, they had potential to be worse. Had I walked into that punch to the nose, I could have broken it. Had the shot to the chin been a lot harder, I could have been KO'd completely, or dislocated my jaw.
I guess where I'm going with this is, dont let the protective gear fool you. It is still possible to get hurt. Usually just makes me more determined to hit him and not be hit myself. ;)
2. You're gonna spend the same amount of money whether you workout and spar at the gym, or if you only spar, correct? So dont you think it would be advantageous to train with others? One of the best ways to learn anything is to watch someone who does it well. Go to the gym. Watch the people who seem to be the best there, and do what they do. Watch other people spar. Watch what they do right, and what they do wrong. Then, try to emulate the good things you see them doing.
I hope this helps a bit.
So R elentlessss....
How'd it go baby?
Fill me in buddy..
Peace
well i didnt spar him yet because the trainers decided to do circuit training instead after a very hard 3 mile jog, i was very hyped up for it though!
Damnn..lol
I was waiting on the news..Had me some great sparring the other night..
One thing i actually found that helps is not bothering with a head gaurd..
The more comfortable i feel the better i work in the ring.. cos if im sparring and i have to keep adjusting the guard it gets on my tits..Was pretty smooth going.. Like i said i say..You gotta try out new stuff each week see what works for you.. I had alot of side to side movement going..Worked wonders for mixing up shots and boxing instead of getting into a scrap.. Move left for the jab..Sidestep back right and throw a left hook..Then start circling again..Lovely stuff.. lol
Let us know when you get a sparr brother..
Peace
hopefully its tommorow if i can make it, i havent ran so much in years and now i cant even lift my leg up!
alright so i sparred the guy!!!!
it was easier than i expected for some reason i didnt feel nervous at all! i just went in there and done it! got my ass whooped though but its all good i was calmer than i usually am but the big problem was i didnt throw many shots and i when i started throwing combos i started backing him up (need to work on that) but i got backed up on the rope more than a few times! in the end its all good, got a little black eye but it didnt hurt 1 bit!
Good stuff bro..Quote:

Yeh i get worked like that sometimes with the big lads.. Thats it though as long as your nerves are good and your keeping your mind clear and thinkin the whole time then you'll be fine..
Like maybe next week you'll be the same ol stuff..But when you get backed up to the ropes you want to be thinking what next all the time..So you could tie him up and spin him round so he's on the ropes and bang to the body then to the head...
Or you might want to sit on the ropes and put your jab out there to set up a right hand and then side step of the ropes..Always thinking..
Keep at it you know.. You'll get better and better no doubt...CC!
Peace
