Margarito returning 3/3
He's coming back in a 10 rounder, probably against a bum, to stop any rustiness/check the injury. I heard a guy named Andrey Tsurkan is being mentioned as is Estrada. A keep busy fight I guess.

I read somewhere, that that's exactly his plan.

He has a world championship belt. Why is there never any criticism when he is so inactive against quality fighters.

this is ridiculous. i never really bought into the "margarito's ducking williams" thing before, but you can't read this any other way. if he weren't afraid he might lose to williams, he wouldn't need to relinquish his belt in order to "preserve" himself for a may/june cotto fight.

Note that William's promoter Dan Goosen hasn't made an offer to Antonio yet. At least a Nice and Fair offer that has been made public. It should be a nice and fair offer, considering Tony's injuries and the competitiveness of the fight.
It appears that Goosen is hiding behind the "Tony is ducking Paul" argument to pressure Team Tony to lower their standards for a fair offer. As of now, Cotto IS the nice and fair offer.
-
Re: Margarito returning 3/3
I really cant see Margarito beating Williams. There will be no fight with Cotto for him.
-
Re: Margarito returning 3/3
Id say Tony beats Williams, and im not a massive Tony fan, Williams is not polished enough yet for tony he needs a couple more step up fights before this. Idont think sharmba to margarito is a good idea looking at who hes fought before. I also think if tony is waiting for cotto, he needs to test himself more in his next fight, because i see miguel beating him convincingly whenever they fight. The sooner the better for tony, as cotto is getting better and better and looks a mature and strong fighter at 147 right now.

Tsurkan is the guy that TKO'd Camacho jr only cause the ref stopped it for Camacho not throwing any punches.... Margarito should smoke this guy he's an open target, although his chin was very solid against Camacho but the kid was relentless.. Margarito has way more power and shoul get him out of there within 3
Estrada could give him problems, I mean he's been in there against Mosely and Citron so its not his 1st rodeo Margarito TKO 6th round

Re: Margarito returning 3/3
I don't see how anyone thinks Tony has a shot at beating Williams. Tony isn't a really big power puncher, he's just a good puncher. Paul Williams is taller, faster, with longer reach, has a decent chin, and probably throws the most punches per round at 147. Williams IMO is lacking a bit of defense, but he's just one or two quality wins away from reaching the elite level. Tony is a big slow guy with no defense, no footwork, nothing. Tony throws a lot of punches but he's wide open after every punch he throws. He's used to being the guy bigger guy but he'll be in for a rude awakening against Williams. Tony is clearly ducking this guy. But in Tony's defense, I think this has more to do with Arum wanting to secure a big time fight with Cotto and Tony wanting to finally get a good sized paycheck than it does with Tony actually being scared of Williams.

Like Tony is polished??? Tony, fundamentally is one of the worst boxers I've seen with a championship. That's no joke. Punches with his arms down, lunges in with punches, often out of position after punching, has absolutely no defense whatsoever, hardly uses footwork and is basically a one dimensional flat footed fighter with a good chin. Gimme a break. It doesn't matter, Tony is either fighting Williams and losing, or fighting this bum, then fighting Cotto and losing. That's it. I don't think anybody will argue the fact that Tony is just a basic, average boxer.

But the point is that Williams is Margarito's MANDATORY. If Williams never makes an offer at all, it still goes to a purse bid. The ball is just as much in Tony's court as in Williams's--more so, really. If he's happy to keep his belt and have the fight, then it behooves his team to get out there and try to negotiate something better than the standard split. Instead, he's doing nothing and just saying he'll vacate the belt he's held longer than any other WW champ rather than take the fight. Walks like a duck....

This is just my opinion of course, and looks like one shared by the Margarito camp, and thats Paul Williams would tax that Margarito ass ! Paul has too many assets.. Speed being the main one. Margarito is "dime bag" slow. I have seen stoned fighters with more wherewithal and handspeed then Margarito have . Margarito seems tailor made for Williams... I could be wrong ;)
That being said , Tony do come to fight. and he keeps coming at yeah , Something to be said for that. and for that I wish him the best in the future . O0

Re: Margarito returning 3/3
To say Margarito is ducking Williams is absolutely stupid for one main reason....ISN'T COTTO A BETTER FIGHTER THAN WILLIAMS?!!?! Jeez peeps,it#s not rocket science.Margarito takes a bum tune up to check the wrist, wins or whatever a 10 rounder, fights Cotto and whatever.
Also, you REALLLLLLY need to check out your facts,Tony has written to the WBO to ask if he can keep the strap and fight Williams after Cotto or at a later date. By fighting Cotto,he is fighting a guy in quite a few P4P lists, for a title and respect and recognition.By fighting WIlliams now,he is risking further injury, and won't be at 100% like he was aginst Clottey.
http://www.maxboxing.com/Kim/Kim011007.asp
his much is clear - on March 3rd, WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto will defend his title against Otkay Urkal in Puerto Rico on HBO.
"Showtime didn't match HBO's offer," said Cotto’s promoter, Bob Arum. As for WBO welterweight titlist, Antonio Margarito, where does that leave him on that night? Currently, his mandatory against Paul Williams is due.
"Margarito is going to fight a 10-round fight," Arum would say on Monday afternoon. "They're going to give him permission to fight a 10 round fight without taking his title on the grounds he was hurt, so we can fight a 10-round fight."
Top Rank's plans are for Cotto and Margarito to face each other on June 9th at Madison Square Garden on a pay-per-view show.
But it's not clear if the WBO, the 'they' that Arum is referring to, has actually given Margarito the option of taking a non-title bout and having Williams, who is promoted by Goossen-Tutor, fight for an interim title or the like.
According to Margarito's manager, Sergio Diaz: "We received a phone call from 'Paco' Valcarcel (WBO president) yesterday, telling us that Dan Goossen's attorney sent him a letter threatening litigation if Antonio wasn't stripped of his title unless he fought Williams."
When contacted on Tuesday, Arum said he had no knowledge of said letter.
So 'the Tijuana Tornado' will not fight Williams?
"That's not true. We'll fight him, we'll fight Paul Williams," Diaz would say Tuesday to Maxboxing. "Antonio has always said he'll fight Paul Williams. But, if Goossen thinks, or Williams thinks, that because this fight is a mandatory, Antonio is going to be fighting him, no, that's not going to happen that way. They got to put up or shut up."
In other words, like they did with a certain fighter, make a bona fide offer instead of just posturing through the media.
"Exactly, exactly," said Diaz.
Nothing is keeping Goossen from making an offer to Margarito (Maxboxing was unsuccessful in its attempts to reach him the past few days to get his comments). It's clear why Arum may want to steer clear of that bout, but Diaz says, "If Goossen makes us an offer that we can't turn down, that's what fight we're going to take. But if they're going to play games and talk like they're talking and Margarito's afraid, it's not going to happen. If they think that's the way they're going to lower us to fight Williams, that fight’s not going to happen.
"And we'll fight March 3rd, against whoever it is."
As for his boxer’s health, he says, "He did train yesterday and he still feels pain on the hand. So that's the only thing worrying us, the hand injury and that's why we asked 'Paco' for more time - because of the hand injury. We didn't want to go into a Williams fight not being 100-percent. Look at what happened with Clottey. Tony went in there at 75-percent, hand injury and ankle injury - and look at how that fight ended up."
Read that.
Like I said, and with all due respect, you sound really stupid saying Tony is ducking him when Tony wants to keep the belt and fight him at a later date,no reasonable offer has been made by Goossen and Tony wants to fight Cotto who is more proven,a better fighter and comes with more recognition.

Re: Margarito returning 3/3
A fight with Cotto for Margarito does nothing but make him more money. I think the majority would like to see Margarito in there with the guy who has been calling him out for the longest time rather then the guy who makes the most money. Margarito from all accounts is about as much of a nice guy as there is in boxing, but he is coming off really hypocritical here. Maybe it's just my opinion but Williams - Margarito is a hell of a lot better then Margarito - Cotto.
I think Margarito would be stuttering the same way confronted by Paul Williams as PBF was when faced with Margarito.

Re: Margarito returning 3/3
Usually when a guy gets ducked it is not for the purpose of the ducker fighting an opponent that is just as difficult if not more so than the ducked. ::** ::**

It does not just make more money, who does he get more recognition for? Who is almost or is P4P? Cotto or Williams? Face the guy who has been calling him out the longest?! You're joking right?
If Margarito had not fought Clottey,he would have been ducking him.Had he not fought Cintron,he would have been ducking him. Now he is facing Cotto,he#s ducking Williams even though Cotto is a better fighter?
He's ducking Williams even though he wants to keep his WBO title and face Williams at a later date? He's ducking Williams to get a shot at the BIG FIGHT he's been waiting for his whole life? Williams' isnt going anywhere.

You say if Margarito hadn't fought Clottey or Cintron, he'd have been ducking them... Well no, just then he wouldn't have a single fighter worth a damn on his record, and weouldn't even deserve to be in the mix. THey are talking about Cotto in June, a fight with Williams would probably be within 30 days... Let the winner of that fight face Cotto... Besides then it would be a unification match.. It's not a done deal that he's fighting Cotto either, Cotto still has a mandatory, and unlike Margarito, look's like he plans to actually take the fight first. I think your kind of discrediting WIlliams or making it out to be that he's not as big a name or he vs Cotto wouldn't be a big fight... Look at it this way, if Margarito vs Williams happens, whoever wins that one will make for a bigger fight with Cotto then would be the case if Tony were to just vacate his title and fight some bum waiting around for his "big shot" as usual. IMO, both Williams and Cotto would beat Margarito, so I can understand why he's trying to make the biggest payday... Kind of sad that he'd give up his title to do so though.
-
Re: Margarito returning 3/3
Paul Williams is the most dangerous fighter at 147 in my estimation ! speed , non stop punching. footwork. he beat Shambra Mitchell like a step child in there.. I never seen Mitchell completely owned like that .
-
Re: Margarito returning 3/3
It's kind of sad that you think a dude who has been boxing and busting his balls since he was 15 is just looking for a big losing payday. and I'm not saying I don't want to see Tony v Williams, because I honestly think Tony's experience, power and chin will win him the fight but I'm retaliating to claims he is ducking Paul.
Like I said, over and over,Margarito wants to keep the title and will fight Williams at a later date,he does NOT want to vacate and Cotto is a more dangerous and better fight. If Margarito beat Williams,it woudn't make the Cotto fight that much bigger simply because Williams is not well known,it would be like Cintron again,Tony beats another young, dangerous fighter and gets no credit.
Like I said, people sound stupid saying he is ducking Williams to fight the better fighter in Cotto. and a Cotto fight is easy to make, both are promoted by Arum and Cotto runs from no one. Even if Tony lost the tune up,I'm sure the fight could still be made.

With all due respect, that is Williams claim to fame, his beating Sharmba, and I don't give Floyd credit for that win,I'm dam sure not giving Paul credit for it.I see a good fighter in Williams, but he throws too many weak punches like against Santos Pakau and if Mitchell and Mathysee, guys he has like 5 inch height advantage over, can get inside easily and bang away,I'm sure guys like Tony and Cotto will do far more damage.
On another note, even though Cotto would be hot favourite over Margarito,I honestly believe Tony can win. I think Arum is making a big mistake putting Cotto in with Tony and I love both guys.

Ok now let me clarify...
Williams versus Margarito has been a fight that fight fans have been clamoring for for a while. I know I have. IMO, this Margarito - Cotto thing is just a Bob Arum creation. Had they not fought on the same card, I don't even think we would be hearing about this fight. Cotto has just one fight at 147 and I think people would be more receptive to a Cotto - Hatton fight.
I guess the thing is, I've got my hopes so high for Williams - Margarito, that this talk of Tony playing it safe rather then taking a risk in Williams to make the big money is a little bit of a turn off.
It's kind of like this.
Back in September Floyd Mayweather had a De La Hoya date lined up for May and was rumored to fight Cintron in November. Of course Margarito came out and called him a coward for not taking the risk in favor of money.
So when I hear that this same guy Margarito is talking about playing it safe in order to preserve a payday, it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I don't really have a huge problem with Tony fighting Cotto but he should just relinquish the belt now and stop holding up Paul Williams. It's obvious now that he's not gonna fight his mandatory. WBO will strip him and Williams will fight someone for it. But he's holding up Williams right now. Williams, Cotto, and Berto are the future at 147. Tony will eventually lose to someone. He's just an average fighter. Plus, Tony's a big fucking hypocrite now.

So when I hear that this same guy Margarito is talking about playing it safe in order to preserve a payday, it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
amat, this just teaches us that Margarito is just now learning how to play the game.
Fighting Williams in March with a Cotto fight lined up for June just means a nice payday for both Cotto and Margarito. Phuk Williams!
Cotto will beat Tony ;) and Williams too!
Not sure if they will be able to hold onto the strap or not but regardless, that strap will be around Cotto's waist by the end of 2007 :)
Bring me the one they call Pretty boy!
Bottom line here is, money talks and bullshiet runs marathons.
And yet when it was the same situation with Mayweather looking for a DLH fight, he's a pussy, right?
