Someone's been suckered ....... £128 million for a (only) decent player on the downside of their career???
They want a big name to kick of footy interest in the US and are obviously as shallow and celibrity obesessed as we are if they think that is the answer.
Still - great deal for him. Massive wage, easy league, nice lifestyle, little paparazzi.
Thats like LT going to euro league. Oh well even if he's on the downside of his career he'll be the best player over here for a long time.
Nice. 8)
Now I can try and get my Man. U. & Real jerseys signed.... :)
Fwock me!! $250 million.... :o thats $1 million dollars a week.... :o
He's earning twice that of Alex Rodriguez. I don't even think the MLS profits 1 million a week.
Becks will be the best player out there, i was watching sky news last night apparently some other MLS team has just signed someone from Peterborough.... fukin Peterborough?! Come off it, Becks is gonna light up the show out there ;D
All those Lovely LA beetches though.... David aint got a chance at being faithfull :D :D
Newsflash! No one here in America gives a f@ck!
Mick is American ;D
California welcomes the Beckhams....
Yes I am American and say all you wan't but watch as soon as he gets here thats ALL your going to see on tabloids the 'sports page in your newspaper is gonna look different.
8)
Oh! yeah! and you Brits need to stop talking shit too meanwhile he scored for you guys to advance in the World Cup he was still goood, now that hes coming over here all of a sudden hes no good. ::**
Fuck off bastards let us enjoy! Becks too.... 8)
Quick note it's said that season tickets will go up %20.... :o
He's getting paid a lot of money to play somewhere where even if he's at his worst he will be the best player out there. This is the best deal ever made for an athlete.
Beckham will not be far and away the best player in the MLS, he's aging and he needs a supporting cast and excuse me if I don't believe he'll have one....now Clint Dempsey joined Fullham FC, he's a good ball player and on the rise.
If the MLS wanted to bring soccer to the US they would go out and get the Ronaldihno's and Wayne Rooney's and all those top teir players.
That will be hard to do as European and South American and even Latin American teams have histories of being great and they have HUGE fan bases.
This will be a little BLIP on the screen for American soccer....we need an American that is good enough to put on a show...Freddy Adu was a player we were supposed to watch grow up and conquer the world...and he didn't even get added to our World Cup roster....and it's shit like that that screws us up.
Lebron James didn't get left off the Olympic B-ball team because he was supposed to be the next big thing....he was given a chance to suceed and low and behold there he is King of the NBA
Becks WILL turn shit!! around here in the states..... Watch!!! 8)
Update on this whole footy news: 8)
FC Dallas are hopeful of signing Edgar Davids the Dutch midfielder who is surplus to requirements at Spurs.
"We are actually in negotiations with Edgar Davids - we've been speaking for a couple of weeks," said the club's manager Steve Morrow.
"We were excited to hear about his availability, so we spoke to his agents and have been told he is available."
"It appears Tottenham are willing to listen to offers," he told BBC London
"It's the transfer window in the United States now - and if a deal is going to happen it has to be done before the end of the month."
Davids joined Tottenham on a free transfer from Inter in August 2005.
----------------------------------------
I also heared that Zizou is thinking about coming out of retirement, Ronaldo and Alessandro Del Piero are in talks with MLS teams....

He'll Dominate every media outlet in the US and will be probably the most recognisable face in the US.
When their at the end of their careers Lyle. Right now they have their palces in the national squad to thinl of. You think Beckham would go to MLS if he was still getting called up for England National squad?Quote:

I understand your point Jim and I am agreeing with you, but you have to admit that it's not really going to help MLS or soccer in the US.
The way to help soccer in the US is to cultivate talent and then ship them to Europe and SHOW THE GAMES ON TV especially the ones that showcase our talent. For the MLS to be big you need a figurehead and that was dropped in their laps when a kid named FREDDY ADU signed on with DC at age 14!!!! Now he's in the no man's land of SALT LAKE CITY....he needs to be the face of the league (along with Becks) and needs to be a New York Red Bull (to make a rivalry with LA)!
I think that Beckhams arrival will help because it's gonna raise the profile of "Soccer" ;D in the US thus kids will idolise him and wanna start playing.
Only a matter of years until FOOTBALL is your biggest national sport. ;)
Your no different to any other country at the end of the day so imo it is inevitable 8)
...Football is our biggest national sport....which is why SOCCER is having such a hard time gaining ground ;D
Your game really is not "football". The foot touch element is really very minimal. It should be called "handball".Quote:

Good points, Soccer is a huge industry though... Various tactics need to be used.Quote:

Hence marketing is a must.
So since 'Brand Beckham' is, at the moment, the biggest and best selling soccer brand in the whole of the U.S, id figure it would be wise for TV Networks to invest some extra air-play in Brand Beckham and his affiliates.
This in turn, will be the proverbial Foot in the door in regards to exposure, revenue and growth. The market swells and gains power and so on and so on.
The MLS from grass-roots to top-level is healthy. Mick gets his Real Madrid shirts cheaper. The Stars & Stripes will have a better National team than The Three Lions, and we'll all have David Beckham to blame.

Oh if those NFL players did ANYTHING else they'd fucking dominate.....might I refer you to one Julius Peppers 6'8 285 pounds runs a 4.3-4.5 40 yard dash and can dunk a basketball....he's just bad as all hell and if he played soccer or rugby or rowed a fucking boat down the Thames he'd be the best at it!!!!
Lyle how big is soccer in the States
Soccer would be a lot better if it was hockey.
Now now. Lyle - it's not like to to make a statement based on one-eyed national patriotism ;)Quote:

I have a Corvette, and it is big and powerful in a straight line, but it does not like going around corners. Very American (!)
I am the first to admit I know very little about American Football, but it looks like anaerobic stamina is not needed as there are so many breaks in the game. Plus it is power and bulk that help at the 'Downs' rather than lots if skill???
Also, and I'll try and break this gently, most international sports (as opposed to American football, baseball and basketball) actually have rules against taking performance enhancing drugs and bulkup steroids.
Sorry, but you don't seem to know the full story. Soccer is very big here in America upon youths, as many kids play soccer all throughout highschool. The problem is we as Americans can't stand WATCHING it, hence, no league can ever succeed here. Just as baseball and football will never be anything over there, soccer will never be anything over here.Quote:

Cycling is an international sport and like 90% of those guys use drugs but ONLY THE AMERICANS GET SHIT FOR IT....no one talks about the other guys who dope...why is that? They don't win!
Landis got caught.....but Lance Armstrong never failed a test so let's excuse him from this little chat people just didn't like him because he won all the time.
Soccer would be bigger if we didn't have other sports that draw in more money....I would personally rather watch MLS or especially the Premier League instead of NBA....I can't take that bullshit anymore
just an FYI the NFL and MLB have steroid and amphetimine testing now they need HGH testing but with all of the player unions it's going to be difficult to pass....don't act like your athletes don't use drugs that problem is not just an American one it's worldwide
Sorry, Lyle, I didn't mean to imply that only Americans use drugs. It's a worldwide problem, the health effects of which we will not see for another 15 years or so.Quote:

If we played US football, then drug use would be just as rife here (maybe it is in the European gridiron league). Tour de France - I agree that most of the guys are more than likely guilty of drug abuse at some point ........ with very few exceptions.
Unfortunately, it is a fact that baseball and US football have a serious drugs problem.
I think drug use would be big in Rugby and Aussie Rules if it was so big in Football here in the US.....fact is people always look for an edge on their competition, doesn't matter what sport it is.
and X you have to admit Barry Sanders was a slick mother fucker!!!
Lyle & X
And to think that kids today are using steroids since Jr. High :( to build up and land in the varsity teams once they reach High School. Or to try and be the best at their sport some even just because they wan't attention from the girls and figure that the best way to get it is bulk up.
If it happens in there chances are they are happening in ALL sports around the world pro, semi pro.....
