WBO orders Margarito-Williams!
WBO orders Margarito-Williams!
Tuesday, January 16 2007
The WBO has ordered a purse bid for the WBO welterweight title bout between champion Antonio Margarito and mandatory challenger Paul Williams to take place January 23 at the WBO Headquarters in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Re: WBO orders Margarito-Williams!
It only makes sense. Margarito got on my good side by facing Clottey, now Williams is the next step. It's a fight a lot of boxing fans are wanting to see. It would be a litmus test for both fighters. Not to mention it has the potential to be a great fight. Aside from Tony, who doesn't want to see this fight?

I would love to see Margarito vs. Williams, I just think it ain't gonna happen.

Re: WBO orders Margarito-Williams!
Remember this threadmMargarito Williams will happen but AFTER tONY cOTTO.Cotto is a more proven fighter, would have been a unification and and would be more respect for TOny too,I mean how many fighters has Tony beaten with undefeated or 1 loss on theor record? Quite a few.How much respect has he got..zilch..so fightinG COtto is the most viable and rewarding option but I GUARANTEE Tony will fight Paul if he gets by Cotto.Margarito does not want to fight March, that is the only problem.

CC bro. You know what, that's something I never considered about him not getting any points for beating other undefeated fighters. If he beat Paul then people would have said that it was nothing. If that fight never comes off though, Tony will definitely look bad.

Re: WBO orders Margarito-Williams!
i have a feeling margarito will vacate and go right ahead to a cotto fight. much more money and he would probably lose either way. willaims will then probably beat the number two guy for the vacant belt.

:coolclick: Glad somebody said it. Here's the thing...I'd rather see Margarito fight Cotto...because he'd lose & then Cotto could kick the shit outta Williams...it'd happen. ;D

Well I think that they are trying to make it seem like Margarito is avoiding Williams. Then Margarito can finally fight, and beat Williams and then they can say how great Margarito is and can go back to the ducking greatest welterweight stuff they have been doing. Sort of like what Calzaghe did with Lacy(in a way). But I won't be fooled twice ;) Williams isn';t ready for Margarito and they know it.

Re: WBO orders Margarito-Williams!
no way in hell does margarito beat williams.
williams and margarito have only one thing in common................................. theyre big welterweights.
williams is faster, hits tons harder, is a bigger fighter, and has better defence than margarito.
williams is the future of boxing, and margarito is nothing more than a glorified journeyman who is no more than 2 fights away from being exposed

Yes but Margarito could still take advantage of the things Williams needs to work on. He may be more 'everything' then Margarito but if he's still weak in some areas Margarito can take advantage of then he isn;t gonna win. There's no way a short guy like Sharmba Mitchell should get inside and fire flurries at a taller Williams like he was able to.
If Williams learns to keep his hands up, not to lean forward, to tuck his chin, and use his jab and his height a lot more often, then I'll say he can beat Margarito.
-
Re: WBO orders Margarito-Williams!
OK... Here it goes.....
Margarito vs. Williams wont happen. Margarito will 1st fight Cotto and loose then Williams will wan't to fight Cotto..... I just have a feeling the fight will not materialize.
Even if the WBO pushes for the fight, Margarito will relinquish the belt for a bigger showdown against Cotto....
I can't believe I just chose a winner betwen Cotto & Margarito.... :(
-
Re: WBO orders Margarito-Williams!
Maybe he isn't ready for Mayweather and Cotto, but Margarito he can handle I think. I just don't think Margarito is that good, or good enough to capitalize on the ticky tack mistakes that Williams makes in his defense. Most of the time he gets hit when a fighter is coming in or pulling out with slick punches that you can't really see coming. Judah and a lot of other fighters have the same problem, but Judah has other issues aswell. Margarito isn't really wild (a lot of people think he is based on the way he pounces a hurt fighter) but he does throw long punches and telegraphs them. He'll still hit Williams but he won't destroy him like he did Cintron. There are a few guys out there right now who would make Williams look stupid. But I really do not think Margarito is one of them. Just my opinion. I would love to see the fight and would predict a Williams victory in a great fight.

Now that's not fair imo. Margarito is really good. He's been 2 fights away from being exposed since he got the short end of the stick against Santos. If he really was a journeyman, Cintron and Clottey would have walked right through him. Do I think he survives against Floyd? No way. Cotto? Probably not. But he's by no means a bum.

cc#263 Majesty good points.....
Also not only did Sharmba get inside but he caught and IMO rocked Williams with a 2 huge right hands in the fight....
Lets not forget also that Mathysse was able to do the same and also rocked Williams in the fight....
I like Williams and he has the tools to beat Margarito BUT he is vunerable hes green and hasn't been in a 'World Class/stage' fight.... If he can get it together and fight the best fight he can then all praise to him cause he will beat Margarito, BUT the slightest mistake can and will cost him....
-
Re: WBO orders Margarito-Williams!
Margarito beats Williams but loses to Cotto. Cotto beats both, Margarito being a good fight, Williams is just a walkover for Cotto.
Williams is so green, people laugh about Margarito's opposition, look at Williams, its absolutely laughable. When I see a guy who's been brought up as soft as Williams, I have to wonder what his management knows that we don't know, what they're worrying about. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe they just wanted to take no chances and then put him in with a somebody, I don't know.

its true that sharmba was able to get inside and land some solid combos on williams, but theres no way in hell that margarito is able to the same.
dont forget, mitchell (even in the twilight of his career) has BOXING skills and a whole lot of speed............. toney has neither of those, and margarito is maybe the slowest welterweight i have ever seen and "boxing" (not brawling) isnt exactly antonio's fortay. not to mention for every flaw williams has.... margarito has four
and youre absolutely right about williams flaws though, but if he irons out those flaws (a big if) than we have the current generations next big thing in boxing.................................. not just a good fighter that can beat a glorified journeyman ;)

cc#535 amat very good points, frozensolid_702 you usually make valid comments/posts and opinions but I think you might have pushed that one a wee-bit tooo far......
To say that Margarito is a journeyman is just absurd, I will go ahead and think that you typed that sentence up in the heat of the moment and don't really think Margaritos a journeyman.....

Definately not a bum or journeymen lol! Hes a good fighter, how good i aint sure though! I think Cotto and Mayweather beat Margarito but think Margarito v Willaims is very tricky to pick.

And see heres what people misinterpret, WE the Margarito fans DON'T glorify him as unbeatble/unstoppable or anything like that.... Nore does he I have seen tons of interviews and read interviews of his he NEVER states hes the best or hes unbeatble he just want's his shot at the titles hes been saying since Zab was champ. he said it while Baldomir was champ. hes saying it while PBF is a champ.
Shits gone wrong for him, he played the waiting game it didn't pay off, he looked like VER rusty against Clottey, his previous fight was a 1 rounder... He has nonone to blame it's just the luck of the draw and he just has to tighten up his balls and fight the best fight he can.....

Re: WBO orders Margarito-Williams!
I love both guys, my 2 favourite fighters but I'm going on record and saying Margarito is going to wreck Cotto. Why? He's been waiting for this for a loooooooooooooooooooooong time,he's more experienced at the weight and he can take advantage of Cotto's defence. Tony will get banged to the body but he knows that and should prepare for that.Cotto is going to be attacked in a way he has not been before, head and body. I just see Tony overwhelming him and the pace Tony will set will upset Miguel#s rythm and cool demeanour.he won't be used to all that leather coming at him. As I love both guys,I think it gives me a good view of the fight and I think the Tijuana tornado wins. Either way, that's fight of the year for me,nothing can beat that. We will learn ALOT about both fighters.
I think both beat Williams,if Sharmba can get inside like that,so too can Cotto and Cotto would murder Paul to the body. Margarito I feel hits harder, and come across as more savvy to me. If he gets as many free shots as Sharmba and Mathysee,he'll hurt Williams and although Williams is the one fighter I can see outworking Tony,it's going to be a BIG jump for Williams in terms of quality of opponent and I don't think he'll be able to handle it.And like it or not,Margarito's defence is tighter(Clottey fight aside)

All good mate !! I feel Tony is too slow to beat either Williams or Cotto.. Margarito is very predictable.... that being said, he does come to fight. and will lose on his shield ! no question very entertaining matches !

Re: WBO orders Margarito-Williams!
That;s the thing with Margarito,he makes up for his lack pf speed in other ways such as his unpredictablness, his work rate and stamina etc. Most of his opponents have a speed advantage over him but there are ways to negate speed. Margarito is a strange fighter to me,he's honest. He's not brilliant in any area and there are vastly superior athletes etc yet he is an anomaly,he's always dangerous and has tremendous heart(to fight with a busted ankle, wrist and rustiness and still maintain that pace a gainst a fighter like Clottey, the only difference being Tony didn't keep moaning about his pain like Clottey,he kept going was a superb effort even though he looked awful),a good chin etc. I just see a dangerous fighter who is a threat to anyone ar 147 due to his awkward style.

Tony worries me cause he can take and dish out punches all night. Only thing is, Cotto doesn't concentrate mainly on the head like most guys. And I doubt Tonys body is as tough as his face. I don't care how good your chin is, your body can only take so much.

Re: WBO orders Margarito-Williams!
Williams is very much ready to step up and take on a top welterweight. Why should he keep on racking up on second tier fighters? The kid already has like 40 fights in. Does that remind you of someone else they said wasn't ready for the top tier because he hadn't beat top guys yet? Hatton, when he defeated King Kostya. Margarito might not be afraid of Williams but he knows this guy is definitely capable of beating him and putting him on the backburner. Does anyone remember Williams use to be a Margarito sparring partner and soon enough was giving him the business. Margarito knows that the kid has skills and his reason to be stripped to take on Cotto is not just a business decision. He passed up his mandatory to take on Clottey. Clottey isn't exactly a name. How many of Clottey's fights have been headliners that you've watched? And Margarito isn't exactly taking all comers. Many people have called him out but namely Zab offered to fight him for his first fight back and that is definitely a big enough name. But I am no fool and I am a thorough boxing fan, competitor, trainer, and judge every now and then. So I say this also, Margarito is no bum or journeyman by far. He is another guy who is good at fighting but is victimized by the business of boxing. I can't blame Margarito for not taking on the dangerous, possible spoiler, Williams. Just like other good fighters who happen to be good business people you have to pick the right fights for you if you are in it for the buck first, which these fighters deserve. But lets not bash or belittle the guys who are being avoided in attempts to mask what the truth actually is. Lets just keep it real and say I'd rather pass on a Margarito-Williams fight to secure a Margarito-Cotto fight. Either fight can quite possibly go to either guy but which fight is a better business decision?

Cotto's mandatory is Otkay Urkal, who's last 2 opponents at welter were a combined 3-13...... How the hell is he a mandatory?? I suspect you don't get as upset about that one, simply because Cotto doesn't stand to lose. Could be wrong.

I've never seen Otkay Urkal fighting. I am interested in comments of anyone who has seen him. Do you think he may have any chance with Cotto?
About Margarito, it looks like he is will let the title vacant to fight Cotto. I think Cotto is going to crush Margarito with his body punches. However, Cotto has to be careful with the upper and straight right hand. Williams has impressed me more with his height rather than his skills. I don't think he beats Margarito neither Cotto.

No your wrong......I say the same thing about Austin getting a shot at Klitschko....Urkal...I also thought Cotto should not have gotten an immediate title shot at 147....What about the guys who have already been there working hard?...IMO just because you were champion in the division below...and you move up.....The best they should get is 10th ranking.....Right is right.....

Cotto's mandatory is Otkay Urkal, who's last 2 opponents at welter were a combined 3-13...... How the hell is he a mandatory?? I suspect you don't get as upset about that one, simply because Cotto doesn't stand to lose. Could be wrong.
Fair enough, I don't really agree with you in terms of a champ moving up though, imo if a fight can be arranged beforehand where one champion moves up to fight another, that's all well and good... Of course it's all a matter of the situation and who is involved.. I mean can you object to Mayweather moving up and "getting a shot" and Oscar's WBC belt(that he won from Mayorga who won it vacantly from Pichirillo) ?
