It's official: Mayweather Sr. not training ODLH
It's on boxingtalk. I guess it's as official as you can get.
Whose gonna train ODLH now? I really respect ODLH for not letting Mayweather Sr train him, but I feel it was more about money than honor.
-
Re: It's official: Mayweather Sr. not training ODLH
i heard that Jack Mosley (Shane's daddy) was willing to step in as De La Hoya's trainer
-
Re: It's official: Mayweather Sr. not training ODLH
Itll be Jack Mosley. Is this a good move by Oscar? I think so,he does not want to get involved with all the family Bullshit,he's there to fight and win but with Floyd in his corner, there would always be a distraction. I agree Albsur,I mean Floyd wanted $2million right?! I don't know much about trainers fees but that sounds like ALOT for a trainer.
On another note, what do people think of Nacho Beristein or Freddy Roach as Oscar's trainer? What's happened to Alcatraz, could Oscar get him back?
Also,I really want to know,do you guys think Floyd senior has been THAT good for Oscar??

Nah!!! Alcazar won't do it, Not only that but I don't think hes been involved in boxing for years now....
I think ODLH best choice would be Mosley Sr., not only that but I think ODLH needs someone in the corner more as positive feed and talk, ODLH pretty much knows what he has to do he knows his fight game..... He pretty much just needs someone that he can have to talk with him give him pointers so that he can execute his plan.... IMO Mosley Sr. is the best choice out there for him, he studied ODLH when SSM was gonna fight him and he knows his stuff.....

Good point,Mosley would be a good choice from that aspect.Do you think Mayweather senior has been as good for Oscar as is made out?

10% is the usual trainer fee. $2 million isnt that much, Oscars purse must be $20 milllion+, god knows what he earn in total.

I agree with this. While Oscar obviously needs a trainer, it's not a huge deal who it is. Oscar's been fighting since he was a little kid, he's been a pro for 15 years, he's been in more big fights than anyone else out there. He's fought guys with just about every different type of style. He knows what he can do and can't do, he knows how to come up with a gameplan, how to do adjust within fights.
If Oscar wins or loses, it won't be because of his trainer.

10% in this situation is alot!! I think Oscar is making the right move,it will allow him to concentrate on the fight without family politics getting in the way.

Good point but Floyd senior was talking as if he knew how to exploit Floyd's hand weakness in a way no one else would know. He hyped himself up,probably for the $$$> and it appears to have backfired. ;D ;D

It's not the usual trainer fee for fighters that are big stars. In those cases, it's always a flat fee, and always considerably less than $2 million. (they talk about this in that boxingtalk interview). Toward the end of the interview, Floyd Sr. is pretty clear that he's asking for a huge amount of money not only because he thinks he deserves in on Oscar's payday, but because he needs extra compensation before he'll agree to train someone to fight his son.
I don't think Floyd Sr. had any expectation that ODH would be willing to pay him $2M and made that an essentially non-negotiable number because whatever bad blood there is between him and little Floyd, he really didn't want to do this. This gave him an out without coming out and saying that (though he implies just as much in that interview with all his talk about how he'd have to "live with it for the rest of [his] life").

Re: It's official: Mayweather Sr. not training ODLH
Id say roach or Mosley SR then..
Roach has done very well with offensive fighters with power and skill, and thats exactly how Oscar will need to be in this fight;
I know little about Mosley SR, and as sum1 said, hes studied Oscar, found out his 'weaknesses' and assessed the best way to beat him and then done it with his son - could be interesting...
On a side note tho, HAHA mayweather SR! all this shit and now he gets nothing, No money and looks a complete tw@ for considering training a guy to whoop his own son, what a PRICK

I think it's just an act,I think he really believed that he would get the $$$,he knew it was a big chance to make big bucks and depp down,he's pissed about not getting his way which is why I have just read an interview where he is saying Oscar's size advantage isn't shit, only he can help Oscar to make the most of Floyd' weak hands etc so I think he was trying to persuade Oascar to choose him and failed.

Re: It's official: Mayweather Sr. not training ODLH
Not that I don't think Oscar can win, but if he has Mosley Sr. in his corner his chances have declined alot.

Yeah, it was about money. De La Hoya is greedy. I can see him sitting on a throne while Mosley fans him with a palm leaf. Hopkins is clipping Oscar's toenails and laughing along while De La Hoys says, "I share my money with no one, Floyd Sr." Floys Sr, is dragged away kicking and screaming by MAB and Morales.

That is so funny that it deserves a CC watch me get a SC for saying this ;)

Re: It's official: Mayweather Sr. not training ODLH
A way to whip both Mayweathers at once. I don't blame ODLH, Mayweather handled it completely unprofessionally and it sounds like nothing but a soap opera if he was involved. I think Mayweather would have been more of a distraction than a bonus......I wouldn't have used him anyway.
-
Re: It's official: Mayweather Sr. not training ODLH
Roach would be intererting, I mean hes always calm and collected knows exactly what to say and motivates his fighters well. Doesn't give 100 instructions and what he does say he keeps it very basic.....
-
Re: It's official: Mayweather Sr. not training ODLH
That shows that papa Mayweather was looking for and excuse to not train Oscar for this fight because of his son and if he was going to he need it a really good reason for that $$$$.
He should hire Roach but Papa Mosley can help Oscar. He(Oscar) already learned a lot from Mayweather Sr. maybe Mosley senior can show a couple of new tricks.
Out of topic.
Cotto also anounce that he was gona make changes in his corner but his uncle still gonna be in charge. something about to get better deffense.

Re: It's official: Mayweather Sr. not training ODLH
In the end...not knowing Oscar...but thinking that I do know Oscar (You know...how most fans always think they know what their fighter is thinking ::** ) & what he's thinking...I'd say that this is more for the fact that he believes that it's business...not family business.
Personally...if that's the reason...I totally agree & sympathize.
Two Mayweather mouf's is two thousand times worse than one. Seriously...I would shit if Floyd Sr jumped into Jr's corner. Wouldn't shock me one bit.
Holy christmas.
As far as who trains Oscar...I know that he needs someone in his corner...but he really don't need anyone in his corner. Fwockit...get Bouie Fisher in there...or hell...toss the Nard in there. Anyway but Jack Mosley. I lost a lot of love for ole' Jack when he fell apart in the Winky fight. I mean...he just totally shut down & then Shane followed suit.
Jack Mosley would be a bad idea.

IMO Jack Mosley would be a fine choice if rumors are true....IMO Floyd sr is playing head games. First he is out. Then in. Then out again....It was I can't train you to fight my own son....Which is understandable...The it was...Well this business....Then it was no again...Then yes...Now this S*** about the money...Does Floyd SR have a valid request Yes....I also think this is the wrong time and way to go about it. This should have been taken care of long ago....Now all of a sudden he decides this. Out of Nowhere?......He is jerking the chain...If I was DLH I would rid myself of him for good....And not because he wanted 2 million

You know what I'm talkin' bout..... ;)

Re: It's official: Mayweather Sr. not training ODLH
If you think about it, whoever trains him is in a great position cause if Oscar loses, they'll say that he's past his prime but if he wins then they will be the most sought out trainer in boxing.

I disagree with Roach motivating his fighters. He couldn't get Toney to lose weight, and that is extremely important to his style especially at heavyweight. Also I thought that he hasn't done enough to improve Pacquaio's defense. Sure its better, but I feel under Mayweather a guy like Pacquaio would really flourish if they could overcome the language barrier, and also whether Mayweather could or not it seems Roach can subside Pacquaio's party life style, but to his defense Pacquaio is a national icon who lives thousands of miles away.
I truly believe Mayweather because he was such a skilled tactician, and because he is a good motivator that he is the best trainer out there. He has more tricks than any other trainers to teach. Emmanuel can only teach a boxer to fight one way, and McGirt is overrated. Jack Mosley just wasn't a good coach who's advice wasn't helpful at all IMO. I like Rafael who is in Mayweather's corner. Atlas would be another good coach.

I think Roach is having some serious health issues. his condition is getting worse. great guy, great motivator, but you need to be with him for a period of time to get use to his long speeches and his redundancy. just my opinion

depends on what kind of fight you like, but I really think its important for boxing that this fight not be like Mayweather-Baldomir which even though I really enjoyed I know not enough people enjoyed it, and if people like this fight then boxing will be far better off because this fight has the potential to give boxing alot of attention or to lose alot of attention.

I meant Roach IN THE CORNER is a great motivater......
By the way James Toney himself couldn't motivate himself, I don't think theres ANYTHING in this world that would motivate him to loose weight.
Thats why I said ODLH just needs someone to talk with in between rds. and give him some pointers......

What? Are you crazy :o
The last thing ODLH needs is coming to his corner and having Teddy take the stool and make OLDH stand that would really kill his stamina.
