What If Ali Didn't Have Parkinsons?
I was thinking about this before and I ask what if he wasnt stricken with the Parkinsons??? How much more could he have become if he wasnt limited.. Would he still be involved in the sport?
Think about the possible avenues he could have explored
1) Promoter- Ali was very charasmatic, Mentally strong, influential and an all around Ballsy man.
2) Trainer- at 66 he is up there with Manny Steward, could he dispense his knowledge of the fight game to other athletes and be effective, even if he wasnt exactly a technical marvel. Think about if he could have trained Mike Tyson after Cus passing..
3) Broadcaster or Color Commentator- He was never at a loss for words
4) Motivational Speaker- The guy could stir you with his storys of being a warrior and gutting out victories in the ring and thriving despite all the civil and racial unrest during his youth and career..
5) Politician- For the same reasons he could have been a Promoter or a Motivational Speaker
6) Flat Broke Lonely Recluse- Would he have sqaundered his life and earnings segregating himself and dissapearing into obscurity like other high profile Athletes, Actors etc...
There are so many possibilities and things that could be speculated upon but at the same time I think its a worthy topic that garners consideration. ;)
What are your thoughts and ideas

Re: What If Ali Didn't Have Parkinsons?
Im pretty sure he'd have kept fighting into the late 80's if not longer given the green light ;)
He'd deffo be training his daughter in a more hands on style and maybe helped out Frazier Jnr more 8)
End of the day the King could simply walk past someone and make them a better person/fighter.... even now 8)
One of the most important and influential humans in history.

Re: What If Ali Didn't Have Parkinsons?

Re: What If Ali Didn't Have Parkinsons?
That's some body slam in your avatar :o
He picks him back up for the next slam so fast it's horrific ;D
I think Ali is in London next month for the Gerald Mclelland fund raising night ;)

Re: What If Ali Didn't Have Parkinsons?
I don't really care what he'd be all I know is he would still have shit that smelled like roses!
Everyone says he's the most important athlete in the history of sports....I highly doubt it added to which indignity they say he was a champion of the Civil Rights movement, yet apparently I am the only one recalling the fact that he used Joe Frazier's and George Foreman's race against them....black brother my ass!
I think everyone is so enamored with Ali's skill in the ring and talking that it doesn't matter that he called members of his own race Uncle Tom's and Gorilla's
Don't get me wrong Ali did great in the ring and he took a solid political stand against an unpopular war but let's NOT portray this guy as some sort of infallible God because he had his faults just like anyone else and those should be recognized as well as his achievements.
Be REAL about your heroes...creating some sort of folktale about them serves no purpose whatsoever

Come off it Lyle.....the guy pretty much single handedly changed the US race wise in the 60's.
Your country was a mess race wise until he made that Vietnam stance and stuck two fingers up to the White house and led the way by example.
One man army imo who had his biggest fights outside the ring and still won by Knockout 8)
I'm a White Londoner and am in awe of Mr Ali still ;)

BULLSHIT!
He wasn't the only person against the war and to belittle Joe Louis is a fucking shame which is of course what he did.
The views of race were changed by MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. and the black citizens willing to do sit ins and stand up for themselves and the white citizens willing to stand up for their neighbors.
Be in awe of Ali all you want I'm not trying to stop you, I'm just saying he was devisive to his race as well.....how did BLACK fighters Joe Frazier and George Foreman feel being called Uncle Toms by such a "great" man????
George Foreman loves what America did for him....he would have been just a thug instead of a gold medal winner/multiple time heavyweight champion/entreprenure without the help of the Job Corps which got him involved in boxing
-
Re: What If Ali Didn't Have Parkinsons?
I don't remember him calling Foreman a uncle tom, he called him a Belgian I know that ;D
But that does little to set back what he actually did for his race and more importantly his religion imo. Whether he was saying something stupid or saying something intelligent he was bringing the issue to the forefront and that was the big thing. People had long just tried to keep segragration a dirty little secret. Up until the 60's it was never a political issue or anything. Almost the same way race is treated today, nobody really wanted to talk about it. So when you have a guy bringing issues like race, war and religion to the forefront, you can't say he just wasn't important. He was. Was everything he did great? No. Did he say a lot of things that were really fairly despicable? Absolutely. But you can't say he didn't change the landscape.
-
Re: What If Ali Didn't Have Parkinsons?
He changed the landscape but the dispicable things he did are never talked about....doesn't make Joe Frazier feel better, George Foreman is just resiliant he calls Ali his hero and the best boxer he's ever fought.....inspite of being mocked by "the greatest"
Why is a lack of humiliaty all of a sudden a great trait as soon as Ali rolls around????
If that's the case then Jack Johnson is the greatest! Or "I'll lick any man in the room" John L Sullivan!
Or if Draft dodging is what makes a great then Jack Dempsey is the best!!!

Come on Lyle, you know Ali is so much more then that. The draft wasn't so much about saving his own ass as it was making a statement and it was a HUGE statement at that. One of the most important statements of the war. It wasn't some hippie putting a peace sign on the flag, it was the world champion giving the government the finger when they needed it.
And everyone knows Ali belittled his opponents. It was borderline cruel some of the stuff he did, especially carrying on an old Patterson with a bad back but it's part of what makes Ali what he is. No one is going around saying Ali is the definition of sportsmanship. He was a fast talking young black Muslim who probably belonged in a straight jacket. That's what everyone loves about him. He was a rebel with a cause if you will. Not to mention the guy was a wonder in the ring.

Re: What If Ali Didn't Have Parkinsons?
My pal took him to dinner in the west end, to a top eattery and booked the table not mentioning who his partner was this place has had all the world Superstars eat there. They got a cab from the Hilton to Leicster sq the driver wouldnt take anything, saying wait till I get home and tell the wife. When they got to the restuarant the head waiter, had a look of I dont believe this. As they walked to there table the whole place stood up and gave him a standing ovation the matra said thats the first time that, anything like that had ever happened in there. they moved them to a corner table, really looked after them, again wouldnt take payment when they left. The taxi had waited outside where a crowd had gathered took them back to the Hilton and wouldnt take payment. My mate said it was the cheapest night out hed had in the westend

Re: What If Ali Didn't Have Parkinsons?

Yeah i wonder if Joe Louis loved what his country did for him? ::**
Ali always said things that were moraly sour but topically apropriate, if you follow?
He was rarely one to hit the nail on the head yet he always hit an apropriate nerve.
Personally i think Ali would of been a wannabe Poet 8)

Re: What If Ali Didn't Have Parkinsons?
The government really gave Louis a raw deal everyone knows that
And YES George Foreman loves what America did for him, hence the flag waving in the '68 Olympics

Huh? ???
Dude, take off that sombrero. Put down the burritos. Re-read my post and then take time to come back with a reply that is actually in context.
