Antonio Margarito and Bob Arum.............. Running out of excuses

in this article, you get to read dan goosen saying basically the same things that i have been saying (assuming you read my posts) about margaritos reluctance in defending his cherished wbo title (remember how hes been trying to ram the whole "im a world champion" nonsense down everybodys throats for quite some time now) against the bonified #1 contender, Paul Williams.

i remember when margarito was trying to cash out on his 15 minutes of fame by calling out mayweather while Antonio "the tijuana tornado ::**" Margarito was the #2 ranked welterweight (im sure there was some money exchanging hands on that one) and mayweather was the #1 ranked welterweight

mayweather (#1 contender) opted to fight the linear welterweight champion of the world (baldomir) instead of fighting the #2 ranked welterweight (margarito) and made the same money in the process and the margaritites went crazy screaming such nonsense as "Duck!" and "Running!".............. keep in mind mayweather was looking to fight the champ, then unify with OSCAR DELAHOYA at 154. margaritos trying to dump his belt rather than fight the #1 contender, and fight some nobody instead

goosen said it best.............. what happened to the long standing tradition of mexican warriors who never ducked anybody? (or he said something like that)

:coolclick: for the article.... See the problem I have with this is how Tony was insulting Floyd and making claims but then he does the same thing... I mean kinda like how Diego Coralles was calling JLC a disgrace for not making weight and then he does the same to Casamayor.... Tony should say something publicy to exhonerate Floyd, I dont expect an apology but something that says I was a little to hasty in slandering Mayweather and now I am doing the same thing I was trashing Mayweather for... Whats fair is fair and Business is Business Floyd was never in the wrong in the 1st place.....

Fair Play Gamo, I remember a short time ago when all the anti-Mayweather propaganda was blowing up this board over and over, I do believe you were one of the culprits recycling alot of the articles yourself...... ;D I wont fault Tony for making a smart business desicion like Floyd did to set up his future, but I will fault him for shooting off his mouth and now he will have to deal with some scrutiny, it gos with the territory..... I think alot of us Mayweather fans have takin it easy on Tony and utilizing the wait and see approach to if there are any validity to these claims and articles, to the contrary of us Mayweather fans taking a helacious amount of abuse. Not really,I saw Danny G was posting the PBF articles,I don't recall posting one on the same subject. It's nothing like the same $$$ thing,and this is teh last I'll say on it,how are you people going to look when Margarito does fight Williams after Cotto? I just find it funny because Floyd ducked Tony and now at the slightest whim,Tony is "ducking" Williams even though he's fighting a tougher,more proven fighter who is on P4P lists in Cotto and b.}like I said,I want to see Floyd coming back to 147 and fighting these guys but after fighting Judah,Baldo and Mitchell,you really think he wants to fight the Punisher,Tony and Cotto...I doubt it....and I don't care how I look,if Tony fights and beats Cotto,I don't think anyone can say anything really........

I'm not sure but I believe it's against Oktay Urkal. Margarito mandatory is Paul Williams. The plan is to showcase both on the same card against there mandatories. Building up a potential Cotto-Margarito fight. The problem is Margarito does not seem to want to get in the ring with Williams. Why is that?

Alright so let me get this straight... Cotto has the balls to fight his mandatory Urkal who is a seasoned veteran with 3 losses Vivian Harris 2x and Kosta Tszyu and mind you this is his 2nd Welterweight fight.... But Margarito wont fight his mandatory who is supposedly an UNPROVEN prospect with questionable defense who Tony would have his way with... Dosen't add up to me guys ... Floyd was never Margaritos mandatory as a matter of fact he ranked higher than Margarito

?????? Come on man.. THat's insane.. As if the same doesn't apply with regards to Floyd fighting Oscar?? Give me a break.. Floyd ducks Tony even though he simply chose to fight the undisputed champion instead, for the same money... Margarito on the otherhand, is looking to vacate his belt instead of fighting Williams, and instead take a stay busy fight for no money, and it's silly to say he's ducking him just because he may potentially get a shot at Cotto after Miguel defends his belt??? Cotto Margarito is practically a done deal,Arum has said so on numerous occasions and as he promotes both,it'll be easy to make...Williams wants the fight in March,Tony's injured and a Cotto fight has is in the works,so Williams can wait.

Again I ask,why would Tony avoid Paul and fight when Cotto is the better fighter?

I'll tell you exactly why Margarito would rather fight Cotto. Styles. I think Margarito loses to both. But against Cotto he thinks he has a chance. Cotto like Margarito is a slow starter. He's also not hard to hit and just comes forward. Margarito thinks he's the stronger fighter so that's what he wants. He wants an easy target to hit. He wants a shoot out. Because Cotto came up in weight Margarito believes (he's wrong) that he will be able to bully Cotto. Against Williams it's a different story. Williams, unlike Cotto did not move up in weight. He's always been at 147. Margarito doesn't look at him as the smaller fighter. Also Williams jab and hand speed are his biggest assets. There also what give Margarito the most problems. The potential of Williams popping that jab in Margarito's face all night is there. And Margarito knows it. Williams is no defensive genius, but he's a little harder to hit than Cotto. Bottom line is Margarito would rather face Cotto over Williams because in his head he thinks he has a better chance of winning against Cotto.

I totally diagree VD,Cotto's defence,although not as good as it used to be is far far superior to Williams,Williams has NO defence as evidenced by guys 5 inches shorter getting inside and moving him with their punches. And Tony wants a shootout with anyone and has been fighting strong WW's all his life. And it has nothing to do with Cotto moving up in weight,he's not dumb,he sees how strong Cotto is. And if you think Margarito is scared of a jab,I don't think you've seen much of him. Santos was supposed to use upwards of 40 jabs per round and was MASSIVE,he weighed at 170 for that fight,it made no difference to Tony.

Margarito is looking to get out of the fight with Williams because there is a very real possibility he would lose to the virtual unknown. The difference in Ls is that Margarito stands to make a helluva bigger payday in fighting Cotto and Margarito can save face better in a loss to him than to Williams. Williams is saved by the grace of his own power; he really doesn't do that much well. He's got arms longer than most heavyweights but he fights inside. His defense is piss-poor (see the three left hooks Sharmba Mitchell hit him with in a row) and he's too flat-footed. But as I said, his power alone has carried him through. Considering Margarito is very similar, flat-footed, relies on opponents tiring their fists out on his face and carries a decent amount of power, he could very well lose to Williams and make chump change in the process. Margarito would rather abdicate rather than be unseated and make a killing in the process. Don't buy into the Bob Arum hype-machine. Hell, Margarito may even want to fight Williams but is doing whatever Arum tells him to. A bigger purse for Margarito means a bigger check for Arum.
