Why arent YOU a boxer?
Some of you are, I'd guess most of us aren't though. So if its its a sport that we love so much what is it thats stops us taking it up, training up and getting some amateur fights.
Me personally, I wanted to box when I was younger and trained for a while, I can remember turning up to the gym in Leeds being positive I was gonna be an awesome boxer and all that, anyway it turns out I was pretty crap. Worst of all, I ALWAYS got headaches when a took a shot, this was light sparring as well.

Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
I started boxing first then became a fan of the sport. So I guess im the opposite
Its funny how less than 4 months ago I had ZERO interest in boxing and now its always on my mind :)

Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
I boxed when I was about 12 but ended up giving up for what ever reason. It was the stupidest move I ever made as I missed it so much. I wanted to start again last year, but since I've had cataract replacement lenses in both eyes I can participate in contact sport as head traumer can displace them, which is a bit shite.. so now I just spectate, which is probably safer!.. I would like to maybe go on to judge or referee contests though

I'm right there with you dude, instant headaches in the eye when I'd get hit.
Despite having really promising natural power, speed, coordination, and all that garbage that makes the Roy Jones' of the world stick out - NEVER could I get comfortable with punches flying at my face. And what good is it if you hit like a mule when you flinch everytime someone throws at you :(
Who knows, maybe there's a trainer out there who can help people get over this, but mine sure as hell couldn't.

Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
I quite like my nose as it is, suffice to say id probably be a rubbish boxer. Leave it to the men i reckon.
-
Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
I don't box for sport because I am slow and uncoordinated.
I take boxing conditioning classes a twice a week to stay in
shape, and I have the utmost respect for the physical conditioning
of most pro boxers.

Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
Everyone loves sparring and the fighting, but to get to that level, it takes an incredible sacrifice. Serious boxing training is very boring. Doing the same thing over and over again, until it becomes instinct. You need to have a lot of drive to put that kind of time in. I once had that drive: but it doesn't stay with you for ever.

Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
I started boxing when I was 16 or so and was pretty good. I still keep in good shape and still get down to the gym to talk to the guys, run, hit the bag and spar a bit a couple times a week.
I'm 22 now and I smoke too much weed and drink too much alcohol to really take it serious. Also, I'm in college getting a psychology degree. But I would say its mostly due to my affinity for sex and drugs.

Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
I'm too old, too uncoordinated, too weak and I have the annoying reflex of closing my eyes, pulling my head down and lifting one leg up whenever someone advances towards me.
I'd be a joke of a fighter to be honest.
Apart from that I'm a world beater though.

Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
I was a boxing fan as a kid but was too wrapped up in academia and books to ever think of it as something to pursue. It was just something I liked to watch. Beyond a relatively young age boxing is a difficult thing to go at and achieve any level of success. Im 26 now and seldom even go for a jog, boxing is just something that I could never really do.

Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
I wanted to box in my early teens (32 now) but due to a protective mother and lack of any type of a boxing gym where I lived, it all conspired to hamper my chances. I am trying to take a shot at it now, but dont think there will be enough time in my schedule to right now. I am hoping that at the latest at the end of May I will be able to, but time will tell.
edit: I really want to get in and spar just to see how I would react to being in the ring. Whether I would stay in control and fight smartly (as possible), lose it and go nuts, or ball up in a corner and cry. Would like to know thou.

yeah same story here mate, boxed a little bit when I was in my early teens but fell in love with kebabs beer and buddha to keep it up. That and the fact I had a malicious psycho trainer who used to make me spar with 20 year olds who'd been at the place twice as long as I had and therefore got my fucking arse kicked ritually. I was pretty big, at 15 I was 6ft1 about 200lbs and he used make me fight the adults, proper heavyweights and stuff. Fucking dickhead.

Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
Well, I started out training and going to a gym (my unlce used to take me) BUT my grandfather played soccer and would always take me with him he saw that I was really good at soccer/footy and he kepted me busy playing. Been playing soccer since I was 7......
Now I got a mini-gym, I got a bag, jump ropes, weights, speed bag and a medicine ball. I train 2 days a week or at least try......
I play in soccer/footy league here in the city that I live on Sundays.....

Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
I'd love to show the world how fast and strong and dominant I could be. But the minute I got my face smashed I'd probably cry my eyes out and I just can't have that. So, I'll be champ in my mind, hitting that stationary heavy bag in the basement.

Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
Boxed as youngster till the hood took me under.
-
Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
i'm trying to get involved in the sport. Actually hoping it turns out in a good way and i can go pro later on.
-
Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
I've been involved in the sport, tried to be an amateur boxer but never got any fights....not really my fault
I'm now a college graduate and it's just not worth being bloodied up or injured for not so much money.....love the sport but just can't go pro

when i am ready to go pro i'll be sure to show off my horrible training sessions as has become the standard on here it seems ;D

Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
I tried to join a gym, but they said i was to old to compete, so i gave up. They won't let you fight in Canada unless you are very young.

Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
I boxed for seven years as a schoolkid and young adult and was undefeated as an amateur, but I couldn't get any sparring partners close to my weight and sparring with MUCH bigger guys all the time was no fun, so I drifted away and took up Karate for around ten years and now I'm an old fart and a highly skilled armchair sportsman.
"I remember the days...", and all that kind of stuff.

Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
there wouldn't be a thing i would love to be more then a boxer but:
- I live in Belgium, the sport isn't all that great here...
- I'm already 20 years old, so to start with boxing now...I don't know, is it possible?
- I actually mailed a gym, about my fitness and health, but he said, because i was powertraining and building volume for about 2 years, i would've had too much muscle and it would take my speed down :(
Yeh, it still hurts :( :)

Re: Why arent YOU a boxer?
Because I'm not tough, desperate or courageous enough to be a boxer I imagine.
I have over 25 backyard boxing matches, which have moslty been 3, one minute rounds, with 12 oz gloves, no headgear, handrwraps or mouthpieces. I love backyard boxing myself, and stared it two years ago when I was 17. I still do it quite often, and since getting some new gloves I plan to test em out with my best friend Wendesday. Anyway, it would be fun to have some amatuer fights and go to the gym, but there are not any gyms very close to me, theres one a little less than an hour from me, but its pretty half ass. One of my best friends was the real deal, came from a respected gym in Oakland, and I've sparred with him to the body before, not head yet, and that sucker is worlds better than me. He knows feints, how to cut down the ring and cover up. Anyhow most of us just ain't tuff enuff to be boxers, don't got the drive, or cojones. ;D

Good one.
Since I was a Kid about that decision this is how I would have said it:
"Because my daddy said to play baseball not boxing" and I played baseball for 15 years untill college but I became an Engineer and thats that. I loved to go boxing in summer camp in Ponce PR. I just love it then when that dissapear I was in Karate for a short while and then .... after I watch Tyson the desire grew back in but I was into other stuff at the moment more interesting things..... meaning Big tities girls ;D :P :boobies: and of course Baseball
