Hatton fought Urango with a chest infection!
Ricky Hatton's Las Vegas debut was almost scuppered by a chest infection.
Hatton beat Juan Urango comprehensively on points in the gambling capital last Saturday night to take the IBF light-welterweight crown.
But now his dad Ray has revealed that the Hitman was on the verge of having to pull out after being hit by a chest infection 10 days before the bout.
And he claims this was the reason his son's stamina appeared to be a problem in the later rounds.
He told The Daily Express: "People have said Ricky looked jaded in the second half of the fight and I'm not surprised.
"Ricky suffered a really bad chest infection in the lead-up to the fight while out in Las Vegas.
"The doctor said it would linger for weeks. We carried on, but if the infection had started a few days later, we'd have pulled him out."
Hatton now has time to recuperate before his next appearance - against Jose Luis Castillo in Vegas in June.
--
That explains why he looked so weak and sloppy then.

Re: Hatton fought Urango with a chest infection!
Ray Hatton is the source, huh? No chance of bias there. It's funny that they win the fight, yet there still making excuses. Could it be that they themselves know Hatton looked mediocre at best?

Mediocre? He dominated the fight.
He had every right to pull out, but for his fans who travelled a long way he decided to box on. This will surely of had an affect on performance in addition to the body punches he took in the fifth. He adjusted his tactics to effectively shut out Urango.
If this was Mayweather or Cotto, boxing purists would be saying they adapted to the situation, give credit where credit is due, eh?

He won the fight with ease and plenty to spare anyway, Hatton himself has made no excuses so give it a rest! ::** ;D

Man, I don't know what kind of fighters you like, but hatton's style is made for action. He is not a slick master like PBF. And hatton clinches when he comes in, everytime once he gets tired. You making excuses for hatton right there.. I just call Hatton ain't quite the fighter people had him crapped up to be.
Hatton is a excellent fighter, but i dont like excuses for why he keeps failing to deliver cause he has been not fighting to what people expected his last 2 fights. Not that this makes him bad, but with all the hype surrounding him after he beat KT I expected him to come over to fight in the states like a mini-albino-leprechaun version of mike tyson. It's not like he's fighting top 10 p4p here guys with collazo and urango. They're good boxers, but hatton is showing that he's not that much better than they are when he gets these lackluster wins and gases out, and excessivley clinches

Hatton threw 775 punches, which far exceeds the avarage for his division, and if truth be told Hattons output is not all that high in general. I dont think Hatton gassed out. He had the lead and Billy Graham told him to play it safe. Too safe really. But Hatton did just that. There was no doubt about the decision and it was a justified win. I dont see the problem.
Urango will be back and as for Collazo not being all that good then lets wiat and watch the Mosley fight. Im expecting Collazo to show a thing or two....

Re: Hatton fought Urango with a chest infection!
Wow, first he had a minor arm injury and now he also had a chest infection. What's next?? Was he fighting with two broken hands too?? The next thing you know he'll say that he was fighting with a prosthetic leg and a glass eye. Who cares?? You won the fight pretty easily, move on. These fighters are always making excuses when they lose, now they are making them when they win too?? Mayweather said he hurt his hand against Baldy, Tony said he hurt his wrists against Clottey, and Hatton with this crap. All these guys won their fights. Just move on and try to look better next time, we don't need your litany of excuses.

CC;
I'm not saying he didn't have a chest infection, but i agree all this damage controll after fights you are taking shit for is bullshit. Get back to the gym, work hard and show in the next fight how much you have improved is the best and only way to show the last fight wasn't you at your best.

CC. Exactly. Just get better. Nobody walks into a fight 100% after months of training. We don't need to hear excuses when you're winning. Hatton's daddy is whining and making excuses to the public on Ricky's behalf. Come on, get the f outta here old man. Let your son do the talking from now on.

Re: Hatton fought Urango with a chest infection!
Who says it's an excuse? Maybe it's just something that has come to light after the fight...
Not to hard to beleive really. Calzaghe said he almost had to pull out of the Lacy fight because of his hand. Was he making an excuse?

But Hatton himself hasnt actually made any excuses, he won the fight fair and square. Why these continual recriminations?? You bring up all these other fighters and yet Hatton is the only one with no excuses!
It was a fair win, and with ease, end of story please! Its getting silly now!

This anti Hatton crusade is now getting silly, he was great for 5 rounds and had effectively won the fight anyways. It wasnt even close and for this to be continuing shows an ignorance IMO..
I dont get this Hatton hatred, I really dont...

Just think it show more character not to mention these things after a fight. If you do it looks like its an excuse, even if its not and is totally legit, why else say it unless your trying to give a reason as to why you didn't do better?
the story about the hand injury he had in sparing, or the family not getting in, fine more press leaks than anything.

You and me both. I really don't think he looked subpar. He looked like a guy who got rocked, adjusted and then went on to win the fight. It may not have been an exciting fight...but VD I watched Jose Luis Castillo and Rolando Reyes. That was about as unwatchable of a fight as here has ever been.

Re: Hatton fought Urango with a chest infection!
All these injuries popping up out of nowhere :o Amazing the man could withstand with two broken hands an ruptures tow, three broken ribs a cracked jaw a detached retina he can handle.. but this chest infection takes the cake the kids a warrior...

Who said anything about Hatton looking horrible??? He looked good for the first half and frustratingly boring in the second half. But he won the fight easily. That's exactly what I said. But he needs to move on to the Castillo fight and get his camp and family to stop leaking these injury stories. First, he had an arm injury in camp, then he had an infection, who cares?? Tell your dad to shut his mouth, call the paper have them remove the quotes before publishing, and have that be that and move on. You won, I don't like hearing excuses from winners, it makes no sense.

You may not have, but A LOT of people have said Hatton looked horrible. And I just don't see the problem with the injuries. If they're legit, then they should be told. If the fighter won it just means he battled through the injury. I just don't see them as excuses that's all.

I think Ray should of kept his mouth shut ::**
Im starting to dislike the people around Ricky.

Re: Hatton fought Urango with a chest infection!
Some quality responses on here
The media is the media - THEY MAKE HEADLINES
Ricky nearly pulled out of fight, Hatton has arm injury etc etc etc
Some of you lot would do well to not be took in by the media spin
1. Hatton never had an arm injury, he had his arms straightened by physios which made him unable to spar for a few rounds. The media spun it another way, it WASN'T a story that came out of the Hatton camp.
2. Hatton DID have a Chest Infection and anybody close to Ricky would tell you that but guess what, listen to his pre-fight interviews, it is clear as day. He can't win, if he mentions it before the fight, he gets accused of making excuses before the fight, if it gets mentioned after the fight, he gets accused again
He can't win. Ray got asked a question regarding the latter rounds and he answered it. Guess what, the media made a F****** headline out of it!!
WHAT EXCUSE DOES HE OR HIS CAMP HAVE TO MAKE??
He lost a single round.
Floyd does it against Baldi and it's called The Sweet Science, Hatton does it and it's whinge city. Yes, he smothered his work for the last 4 rounds and it wasn't pretty but he did the job, won the round and avoided the KO.

I don't get the cross reference to PBF, where did that come from? Was he making excuses after beating Baldi?
Here go my Sadclicks up now, starting at 37 and going up to......................

No Sad-clicks from me, the reference was Floyd getting criticised for his performance against Baldi
Yet for me
Hatton-Urango was not much different, at least not for the first 8 rounds
Hit and don't get hit
Floyd and Hatton both knew their opponents were the bigger men and minimized the KO risk but avoiding getting hit. Floyd just smothers a bit more prettier than Hatton does :D
Hope that cleared it up ;)

Re: Hatton fought Urango with a chest infection!
Boxing fans are getting more and more demanding. If a fighter doesn't look absolutely perfect, then a lot of fans demean them - I just don't get this. Sure, I'll probably complain if a fight turns into a hugfest or a track meet, but both of those scenarios are perfectly legitimate fight-winning strategies. May not be the most entertaining, but it gets the job done!
People complain too much. A little here or there is justified - e.g. Ruiz - but constantly demeaning a fighter is just uncalled for. These guys put it all on the line for our entertainment, and deserve our respect.

Re: Hatton fought Urango with a chest infection!
"Ricky suffered a really bad chest infection in the lead-up to the fight while out in Las Vegas."
Ive had a bad chest infection and had to spend a week in hospital :'( :'( :'(...RH looked OK in the pre and post fight press conf's to me ::** Its a load of rubbish. He ran out of steam because he was inactive for too long and likes Kebabs >:mad
-
Re: Hatton fought Urango with a chest infection!
Ive had chest oinfection and NOT had to spend any time in hospital, you must be a big girls blouse.
Either that or its possible for one chest infection to be worse than another, I'll let you decide.

Nobody. Violent D always tells it like it is. It's just that when it involves certain fighters, that fighters groupies tend to take every thing as an insult. Case in point. Hatton's father makes an excuse about a fight his son won? Why make an excuse? He won. I point that out. Im not too sure about being put in the groupie club!! ;D
You do tell it like it is and thats why I take notice of your posts. Ive only maintained that to be fair to Hatton, he hasnt actually been coming out with any excuses himself. He got his win, gave credit to his opponent and seems to have moved on. Fair enough IMO.

If only he had a pair of stones like the great Ricky Hatton, he would have soldiered on through that shit ;)
