Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
Hell, Wlad's is 81 and Tommy Hearns had a reach of 78. Williams fights from the outside punishing his opponents with savage jabs and setting them up for the finishing straight shot down the pipe. He gets better with each fight. He just may be the most compelling fighter in his weight class.

To much for anyone? No. You can get inside of a reach. But he is very good and to think he has a bigger reach then Ali is unbelievable. But he is a beast and will be champ one day imo.

Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
I can see him moving all the way up to 175 if he doesn't get damaged on the way
-
Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
a inside banger would brake him. someone like castillo.
-
Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
If Williams threw a consistant sharp Jab then that may be true, but he doesn't and people get inside on him and he lets it happen so its not too much
-
Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
you guys are gonna laugh at me but I'm curious in a fight Williams vs Maussa you all know how weird id Maussa and Hatton, Cotto and of course Harris mention how heavy handed he is.
-
Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
williams doesnt use his jab well o his reach ... he leans froward and doesnt extend
-
Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
HHhhmmm. That must be why he is 30-0..... ??? ::** ::**

Just because he's 30 and 0 doesn't mean he's flawless :)

Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
Like Hearns, that reach favours him because when he hooks, his fist is closer to the target at the most powerful point of the arc of the punch, the fist has to travel lest distance. I can't explain it it words well, but do you know what I mean?
-
Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
I don't believe getting on the inside is necessarily the key... just someone too fast for him like PBF.. Williams is a very good fighter on the inside as well, and throws more punches than almost any other welterweight.

No, thats due to the fact that he keeps fighting opponents like his last one Santos Pakau.... ;)

And Wlad was beat by a harder puncher like Sanders and Hearns was beat by a slick boxer SRL.....
When your bound to loose, your height, reach, power, stamina will not save you.
Thats just part of destiny.

Williams has that ability to do it either way inside or out , that is what makes him dangerous. and he throws many a punch, Williams has a great work rate along with excellent hand speed . I like a tall fighters that is willing to fight on the inside when it comes about, rather then hold on , andtie up . Paul has a finished look about him. O0

I agre with Lords that Mofo is just as busy in his clinch as he is on the outside he seems like "Stretch Armstrong" with his inside and outside punching effectiveness... I dont care what anybody says he would have laid Margarito out to waste... Cotto and Williams are the Future at 147 and will serve the Kingdom until Floyd calls it a day...

He may be tall like Tommy...He may have a longer reach than Tommy but thats where all the simularities stop.........Because even though he is 30-0 he sure as hell don't fight like Tommy!!!!
-
Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
Thats right, he does not. But he is pretty polished though.
Still think Margarito would walk through him.
Williams is brave but i dont think he's tough. Plus he does not hit hard at all.... Thats why i dont see him going further than 154.

Huh? What in God's name does that mean, mate?

Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
Margarito lose a lopsided UD. But I don't think Williams uses his height to his advantage. He's really good in the pocket "fighting small" and throwing short punches but with that type of reach and physique, you'd expect a sick ass jab and a monster straight. Manny Steward should take this guy under his wing.

No, he is more of a stylest. Tommy was a bomber. There are few who could ever fight like Tommy and I never would say PW could, but give him time, and he could be the future. I believe he would starch Magaraito who gets way too much credit for his very ordinary skills. Cotto and PW would be a fight for the ages with thier opposte styles.

Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
I've only seen two Williams fights, his last two and to be honest I'm not overly impressed.
Against Sharmba Mitchell he was caught flush several times and his next fight against a complete unknown who took the fight at only 24 hours notice was something of an embarresment.
Mitchell completely and utterly outboxed the kid, landing punches at will, (which was great obviously) but his punches were so lacking in power that the referee couldn't find a reason to stop it for several rounds.
I agree with those who think Margarito would just walk through him.
Granted, he's tall, incredibably awkward and throws volume punches. He could outbox virtually anyone at the weight.
BUT to me his downfall is that he seems to have very little punch power, and looks about as sturdy as a KFC hotwing.
I'd fancy Margarito or Cotto to break him apart inside 10 rounds.

Although i have to say i do think the ref should of stopped it earlier. It was clear the other guy was loving just taking the punishment.
Who was Williams supposed to fight anyway?

Yep I agree, but that was why it was embarrasing for Williams. The other guy was being picked apart at will and the referee clearly wanted to end the fight, but Williams although he was landing with everything, couldn't hurt him enough to warrant the fight being called sooner. Williams has no punching power.
It's interesting as well that Pakau had been knocked out in his previous two fights as well, including a 1st round KO defeat to Randall Bailey, a fighter who CAN punch just a few months before.

Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
Its embarassing that he was labled as the next Hearns.
Now THAT IS overrated! ::**

Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
Tony Pepp was 6'2 !
..and Hatton still stopped him in 5 round and broke his rib for good measure.
Hatton is 5'6 by the way.
My point is, a long skinny arm wont through a hook as good as a short muscular arm.
And as mentioned by others, if a beast like say, Miguel Cotto or Andre Burto banged away to the rib, Williams would crumble like a breadstick.

by enlarge I would agree, however this kid Williams is a bit different , he gets good leverage on his hooks.. fantastic hand speed. very good in-fighting skills . I think shorter fighters in that weight class will find it very un nerving on the inside with this cat. Paul has what it takes to win those up close battles .. O0

Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
I like how Williams aggressively times his opponent as he tries to get close ! not one or two punches and run, like most rangy fighter , but meaningful combinations designed to close the show !

Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
Comparisons between Hearns and PW can only be maid on dimensions. Hearns was a unique kind of fighter. If I had to compare one of today's fighters, it would be the guy who iced Yousef Mackl. I believe his name is Naco Berrios and he is from Columbia. He swings with the same snap as Tommy did and has the same kind of one-punch power.

No one here, if thats what you mean...
Actually worse, professional writers in boxing mags (Boxing Monthly/ News/ Weekly etc).
I f read on a number of occasions (Pre Shamba) that he was touted as the next Hearns.
I also heard Jim Watt refer to this during the Mayweather-Baldomir Build up, fortunately it was in a tottaly different light. ::**
I dont wanna make a big thing out of calling PW overratted but its just funny cause i couldn't think of any overrated fighters a while ago.

Dont think i ever recall Tommy administering the kiss of Death on his opponent before icing them though ;D

No Tommy would just dispose of them and walk away so someone else could clean his mess off the canvas..... :D................When Tommy won it was exciting...When Tommy lost it was exciting

Williams too often gives up his reach advantage willingly to get inside and bang. He will continue to do so until the shorter-armed man catches him with a hook that leaves him standing up at the count of 11. If Sharmba Mitchell had had power he would have been reeling from those 3 left hooks in a row.

Re: Paul Williams' 82 inch reach is too long for anyone out there.
The round that Naco did the kissing in will go down in infamy for what the referee did as well. I'll let you find out for yourself, but I wrote an article about it. Unreal. Hey, maybe it's a Columbian thang!
