I would have rather seen the Jones match, this is gonna be such a borefest... But still kinda exctiing to have 2 defensive masterminds facing off against eachother

Re: Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright Agree To Terms ForJuly 21 Pay-Per-View Clash At 170
wow people in the states are going to have to pay for that fight? you poor bastards...
And wtf mun? another LMW - but even worse at 170? this guy just gets better and better don't he... was the 60/40 winner split with RJJ bullshit then or did hopkins just opt out?

Re: Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright Agree To Terms ForJuly 21 Pay-Per-View Clash At 170
I'm not surprised the Jones/Hopkins fight didn't work out. The combined stubborness of those two guys is just off the charts.
Didn't see this matchup coming, the 170 weight limit would definitely seem to favor Hopkins. He had to work with a trainer to bulk up to 175 from 160. 170 might actually be a more comfortable weight for him.
I wonder how going up to 170 might affect Winky's future. I was looking at Winky as a possible opponent for the winner of Mayweather/DLH at 154. If he goes up to 170, it'd be asking a lot for him to drop 16 pounds at the age of 35. But then again, just because this fight is at 170 doesn't mean he HAS to weigh 170, he could always come in lighter.
It's an intriguing fight but obviously has the chance to be a real snoozefest. Hopkins is a deliberate slow paced fighter, and Wright does best against guys who come right at him like Mosley or Tito. Hopkins obviously won't do that.

Yeah this is one for the purists.
I actually think Winky would take this.

i've been wanting this fight for along time. i thought they were gonna make the fight happen after winky beat tito but the hopkins made some excuse as to why he didn't want to take the fight.
at this point i don't know who to pick.

It is a toughie.
Its not like you could make a strong argument based on either fighters weaknesses.
I think the reason i like Winky in this match up is for the simple reason that he throws more and may have the better defence up close.

Re: Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright Agree To Terms ForJuly 21 Pay-Per-View Clash At 170
Why come back for a fight like this, Mr. Hopkins? Why? Oh yeah, you want to whip him in a way that Taylor couldn't. Stop comparing yourself to others and be happy with your own accomplishments.
My Comeback Options
1. Beat a Heavyweight like Roy Jones Jr. did
2. Avenge my loss to Roy Jones Jr.
3. Beat up Ronald Wright and try to show up Jermain Taylor

Re: Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright Agree To Terms ForJuly 21 Pay-Per-View Clash At 170
Hopkins versus Wright will bore the pants of the whole world . Both are glorified safety 1st merchants !
If either one had a set swinging between their legs they'd by looking for Calzaghe !!
Instead you're gonna be hoodwinked into believing this is a great match up when its not !!
There will not be any knockdowns and no drama.
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright Agree To Terms ForJuly 21 Pay-Per-View Clash At 170
I think hopkins might take this - will depend on how he is now age can catch up at any time.
i don't think hopkins is a better fighter, but 170 is way to much for some like winky and his style...
I do hope winky wins though, if he does i do see his next fight being agaisnt calzaghe at SMW... would be interesting

Re: Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright Agree To Terms ForJuly 21 Pay-Per-View Clash At 170
Why do people not think this will be a great fight? Two top 5's p4p are fighting, and we all know Winky will take the fight to Hopkins who still IMO has enough left to fight a top inside fight. I think it will one of the best fights of the year if its happening.
PS. Roy JOnes Jr. at the Trinidad fight said WInky was just as big as him walking around so I don't think size is a problem for Winky who looked strong enough to deal with Trinidad, and Taylor.
Strength:Hopkins
handspeed: Winky
footspeed: Hopkins at this weight I think
Offensive:At this point Winky due to he punches more
defense: Winky
stamina:both have great stamina
power:Hopkins
chin: I would go with Hopkins because 1. Winky has less power 2. Hopkins has never been in a position like WInky was against Vazquez.
determination: Hopkins... Winky has often given up rounds he shoudn't have.

Sorry Junior, Calzaghe would rather fight a reality show soap opera star.... ::**
No Knockdowns?????? Gotdam thats one hell of a revelation... I thought it was gonna be like a Tyson fight with all kinds of fury and fire................ Oh yea this fight showcases 2 of the top 5 defenseive fighters of the past 20 years..... >:mad

Is there some reason the press hasn't caught wind of this matchup?
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright Agree To Terms ForJuly 21 Pay-Per-View Clash At 170
This sounds like an appalling matchup at that weight. Utterly ludicrous, and if this is the best BHop can come up with then he should stay away. Utterly pointless. Winky is a blown up junior middleweight and 170 is way beyond what he should be fighting at.
If this is really happening then its a farce...

Re: Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright Agree To Terms ForJuly 21 Pay-Per-View Clash At 170
Wow. People are really critical of fighters, huh? I guess it all boils down to what you like about boxing.
Personally, I like different types of fights - they don't all have to be the first round of Hagler-Hearns! Hopkins/Wright is a good matchup of two very skilled boxers, and while chances are good they're not gonna go toe to toe in the middle of the ring, I'll still watch the fight just to see two consummate professionals at work.

So why cant it be at 160 or even 168?
170 is a copout and only reduces Winky's options.
Hopkins at this stage is playing the arch manipulator and I just dont buy it.
Why not fight another guy at light heavy, why not move up to cruiser?....no, he calls out a guy that the guy that beat him last got a decision over and asks him to move up 10 pounds...
Its ridiculous....

as much as i slate hopkins for the thigns he done, in the ring i enjoy watching him and a lot of people would class him as borring as fuck from eastman, taylor I +II - tarever was great fight... but is till enjoy watching the 'borring fights' its just a freaking joke imo IF this si true and el gamo aint trying to burn us;)
Hopkins is a gym rat and can make 160 no probs - its the devision he fought in almost his entire career! winky is a 154 fighter at best, and he wnats to fight him at 170? thats bullshit

Re: Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright Agree To Terms ForJuly 21 Pay-Per-View Clash At
So what Hopkins has fought at middle for most of his career... He's almost 43 years old and just last year he put on 15 lbs of pure muscle to fight at light heavy.. How in earth do you know what he can or can't make comfortably? And the same with Wright... People are being silly, Winky wouldn't have signed to fight at 170 if he didn't feel he could make it, and I know that he walks around higher then that and has generally weighed close to there on fight night in his last few bouts. It's two great p4p fighters here, and people are calling it a farce. What on earth more do you wan't, would you really have rather seen him fight a shot Roy Jones?

Why not let Hokins try to unify at light heavy then, instead of calling up somebody way out of their weight class?!
Yes, I would prefer a shot at Jones Jr, at least Jones has his experience at 175...

Woods aint got a fight lined up yet - that would be better for hopkins imo than winky at 170

I'd rather see him stay retired. If he must fight then fight Calzaghe.
I think you made a point about their respective weights. It can be refuted but it's a solid case.

Experience getting Brutally KOed and running scared for 12 rounds the last 3 times he fought anyone worth a damn, incidently twice the guy Hopkins just dismantled.. What would make you believe that this would be a more competitive fight than Winky vs HOpkins?? Winky just beat jermain Taylor(imo), and has always been huge for 154.. No reason he can't bulk up 10 lbs if Hopkins did 15 last year.. Like there's really any difference between 168 and 170 anyways.. It's not as if it would be for a belt then, and Winky can weight in whatever he likes under 170 if it would suit him better.

Winky doesn't drink beer and stuff his face in between fights, nor does he look like a fatass... It's a bit different.

Re: Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright Agree To Terms ForJuly 21 Pay-Per-View Clash At
Wow. Winky cries like a baby that he should have beat Taylor (even though he didn't) and walks away from a rematch like a child. Hopkins has just put on one snooze fest after another in his recent fights and can't seem to make up his mind on who wants to fight. Some "purists" might think this will be a great chess match, i personally think it is one of the less intriguing fights in what should be a great year for boxing.

One question, are you retarded? How could you not see Winky winning the Taylor fight... he clearly won it, and outlanded Taylor by 60 some punches. I would be pissed as well because he was also robbed of the Vargas fight, and the Simon fight. Also WInky will come foreward not allowing Hopkins to fight safely on the outside.

Do you think PBF/ODH is a farce too? "Winky PBF is a blown up junior middleweight lightweight and 170 154 is way beyond what he should be fighting at."
I mean, look--just like PBF wanted Oscar, Winky wanted this fight. It is what it is. Wink weighed 170 against Taylor anyway.

I can assure you i am not retarded. Maybe you are just a hardcore Winky fan...because there is no way in hell he "clearly" won that fight. For him to act like a straight up baby and then back out of a rematch...where he might have proven more clearly if he was the better fighter...made me lose a huge amount of respect for him.

Re: Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright Agree To Terms ForJuly 21 Pay-Per-View Clash At
this was a bad decision by wright. hopkins should win this fight because of obviously the weight they are in. hopkins should win a decision

I don't say retard as a means to hurt your feelings its just how can you possibly say he didn't win that fight by 4-5 rounds is beyond me... He way outlanded Taylor, and he clearly won the fight. I don't think he needed to give Taylor a rematch though I wish he had taken it... however he fought a very good opponent in Ike Quartey and dominated him as well. Like I said before WInky is as Large as Roy Jones Jr. in terms of weight, and looks very big at middleweight. He is naturally like 190 pounds Roy was saying, and its very easy for a guy that big to fight at 170... He is the second best fighter on the planet p4p, and I believe he beats Hopkins.

next lets evaluate this fight.... hopkins is on a long layoff and he old it might do sumtin to him so he might lose .... if nutin changed he should win

Re: Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright Agree To Terms ForJuly 21 Pay-Per-View Clash At 170
This fight is gonna be easy work for Winky as long as the ref keeps Hopkins from cheating.
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright Agree To Terms ForJuly 21 Pay-Per-View Clash At
Miles, you make great points all the way through the thread,CC. Winky is stupid to take this fight because it would end any chance he would have of fighting the winner of Oscar Floyd which would be financially more viable. Like I said before,it would be technically,a good match up but B Hop should be fighting someone else, what is it with challenging guys much smaller!? WTF!
And even though I'm not a big fan of his,JC beats both these guys imo and should do EVERYTHING possible to get them in the ring. I just had the pleasure of seeing some more fight JC fights and this guy is an awesome awesome boxer who rises to the occasion. Bring either of these 2 and he will beat up on them.
And I don't see how B Hop is going to win this fight if it is made. The names are exciting, the fight certainly won't be. ;D
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright Agree To Terms ForJuly 21 Pay-Per-View Clash At 170
Unbelieveable.
Honestly...I'm speechless on this one.
I say Hopkins takes this one...then again...I don't know...Wright's defense & jab is impeccable.
I'd love to make some comparisons between the shared Taylor fights...but I'd have to factor in the judges...& that's just a tuff call picking a winner based on judges. ;D Heh heh heh.
This will either be the biggest technical showcase of the decade...or a stylistic nightmare for both fighters...either way...I'll love it.
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright Agree To Terms ForJuly 21 Pay-Per-View Clash At 170
IMO, Hopkins workrate is just not high enough to win rounds. Although Winky's lack of power may give Hopkins some confidence to stay busier than usual so you never know. Problem for Hopkins is that Winky's defence revolves around his jab so it's a bad match up for Hopkins.
