is MIKE TYSON underrated?
a prime tyson was devestating--crushing every1 in his way--he didnt go in to box he went in 2 knock hos opponents TFO! and he did
he was once a scientific fighter--had he stayed that way who knows how long he would have been champ.
he became a 1 punch hitter,,,this set him up 4 defeat
he only lost 1 fight in his prime...much like joe louis
now after having a 5 yr retirement.....he sure as hell was just a shadow of his former self
point being -the tyson b4 jail was a legend--after jail--like an old louis
nobody counts louis fights after he came out of retirement, how come they count tysons fights sfter retirement?
people focus on tyson after jail--not b4 when he really was a beast ripping through all his opponents, so i think hes underrated becaus pple focus on his after jail career

I agree, I love Tyson but the majority of his fanbase is severly delusional, with many thinking if he just trained hard enough he could still unify the heavyweight championship today.

Re: is MIKE TYSON underrated?
It depends.
He's underrated in the sense of some people think all you need to do is not be afraid to beat him.
and
He's overrated in the sense that people think he could destroy everyone by the wind of his punch.
So it's 50/50 from different angles and perspectives

The two comments above should answer your question. He is one of the most underappreciated fighters because of his lack of mental stability. That shouldn't take away from the fact that Tyson on his best day, would probably have beaten any fighter from any era on their best day. He had it all. Speed, power, technique and IMO, a good chin. He only lost when he became complacent or just plain crazy. That man needs more appreciation.

There's no way in hell Tyson is underappreciated. Most people don't rank him in their top 5 heavyweights of all time, and yet these same people always pose the hypothetical matchup of Ali (usually their number 1) against Tyson. Not Ali-Lewis, Ali-Holyfield, Ali-Marciano, but more often than any other, Ali v. Tyson. That is the ultimate sign of respect.
-
Re: is MIKE TYSON underrated?
I think maybe the question itself is too vague.
Tyson..Over all? In his prime? his best era?
Over all as a boxer?
Career? in/outside of the ring?
Contibution to boxing?

Re: is MIKE TYSON underrated?
over rated for sure was good to watch in the early days when people like star were a babe in arms lol

If his prime had come 5 or 10 years latter he would have had to face Lewis,Holyfield or Bowe to even win the HW title not the washed up fighters he did fight.
Not his fault I know but he was lucky there was a serious lack of talet around when he was in his prime.

How do you know whether he was lucky though... He could have been unlucky, becasue he never had a chance to get the great names on his resume when he was at his peak.. Id say he would have had a good chance to beat any of those 3 in his prime, and they probably would have made for some of the great fights he never really had imo. Win or lose if he had faced more adversity in the ring I think alot of people would have more respect for him. He does have the one great fight imo with Razor Ruddock, but he was already past it a bit.. As for the threads question I think Starr's post was dead on.. It all depends. Most people either underrate or overrate him, I would say. Id have him top 5 at his best, in terms of who would win between all heavy's.. But probably not top 10 in a greatest HW list... Either way he was an ATG.... Anyone who argues that I think is underrating him.
-
Re: is MIKE TYSON underrated?
I'd say the casaul fan grossly over estimate him, whilst a large proportion of 'hardcore' fans tend to sell him short.
In my opinion he probably makes the all time top 10 but only at number 10.
-
Re: is MIKE TYSON underrated?
I don't rate him in the top 10 all time....he's top 20 but near the tail of it.
He was mighty impressive but at the end of his career there were guys A LOT better than he was, even in his prime. I'm not dissing Mike but being realistic about Bowe, Lewis, and Holyfield....those guys were DAMN GOOD and not to mention Old Foreman...I watched Foreman-Holyfield today and Big George still had enough in him to take it to the big boys of the division.
Mike Tyson never got the chance to fight a big time fighter in his prime....you can't say Michael Spinks...he didn't "fight" Mike Tyson he fell down....you can't say Larry Holmes...he was out of his prime.
Frank Bruno, Donovan Rudduck, Andrew Golota, Lennox Lewis, and Evander Holyfield were his chances and he did REALLY well vs Bruno and Rudduck but by the time he locked up with Evander and Lennox he was so far past it he couldn't do anything.

Yep i take Prime Mike beating Lewis, Holyfield and Bowe personally. Yea Mikes career isnt one of the greatest of heavies on a all time level....but on a top 10 'best' in terms of ability at their best i have Mike VERY HIGH.
-
Re: is MIKE TYSON underrated?
Lewis and Bowe both had the perfect style to beat Tyson
Holyfield would ALWAYS at least frustrate Tyson to no end....I do think he'd still beat Tyson in Mike's Prime
-
Re: is MIKE TYSON underrated?
as far as a prime tyson(85-90) vs the other greats go
i still think a prime tyson 4sure could not have beaten ali or foreman
its fair 2 say he has a chance 2 beat
holmes-either way--holmes would make tyson eat his jab-tyson would bash in holmes w/body shots
frazier
marciano
lewis
holyfield

Tyson-Shavers always piqued my intrest

Re: is MIKE TYSON underrated?
Lewis would have struggled with Tyson in the 80's where as Bowe would have won.
Lewis is also overrated...to slow and lumbering. Tyson circa 1987 would have done it in 2-3 rounds.
Tyson lost to Douglas and in reality probably should not be ranked in the top 10 of all time as a lot of boxing scribes have done.

Yep, me too. Holyfield would've beaten Tyson in 1991, 1997, 2007, whenever. And I would like Lewis and Bowe's chances as well if they had fought in the early 90's.

Lewis was fast in the late 80's early 90's ..real fast and excellent power... much better at that point in time then he was when he made that 25-30 lbs leap after the Ruddock fight , all that muscle slowed him to a crawl.. The 226 lb Lewis that destroyed Ruddock would have given a prime Tyson some troubles IMO.
-
Re: is MIKE TYSON underrated?
Lewis -vs- Ruddock O0
Pepe Correa was a great trainer, and Lewis was a better fighter for it. Lennox would have been more exciting and thus be held in higher regard, had he stayed with Pepe IMO .

Re: is MIKE TYSON underrated?
Pisses me off how he says "I did it as a Brit!"
He used the Canadian Amateur program to develop his skills and fought for Canada in the Olympics twice!!
he moved to Canada at age 12 and had done no boxing before coming to Canada, NONE!
Canadian citizens and taxpayers dollars supported, fed, clothed and trained him. It cost MILLIONS of $$$ to send a fighter to the Olympics! He went and learned his train and gained notoriety on Canada's back TWICE, and that is how he shows his gratitude! F#ck Him!
That fight was 2 Canadian boxers. Britain can have the ungrateful b@stard as far as I'm concerned.

Re: is MIKE TYSON underrated?
For what. Sparring matches or exhibitions with 320 pound hulks? Give me a break. He quit on his stool like a dog against McBride and that shoud be a part of his infamous legacy. Tyson snatched defeat from victory and dissapointed his fans by becoming a big "what if." Can we just move on?

I don't think that overhand right would have hit Tyson when he knew what "Defense" was.
But it's all up to interpretation, he peaked too soon and changed his style from combos and defense to one punch ko.  In many ways...he's like hamed, not in style but circumstance.

He's not rated now because he is retired, But Pre Prison, He was a monster capable of decapitating any heavy that ever lived, Post Prison, He was pretty much a little better than average.

you petty parochial bastard, is it not possible to have allegiance to more than one flag in your universe? He was born here, he'd have boxed here and y'know what if he'd have walked into a shithot gym in London instead of some crappy canadian one he might;ve ended up TWICE the fighter he was, but he didn't. Big deal. Doesnt change the fact he's born in Britain and has British citizenship. Stupid stupid man.
-
Re: is MIKE TYSON underrated?
He COULD NOT have fought for Canada in the Olympics without CANADAIN citizenship!
Maybe you Brits should be glad that us Canadians have some alliegance
that's why we declared war on Germany the same day as Britain even though we were 5000 miles away and safe in the shadow of the USA!
1 million Canadians served in WWII
45,000 Canadian war dead 55,000 wounded both my Uncle and Father fought in WWII
1 out of every 200 Canadians DIED in WWII and onother 1 in 200 were wounded
WWI ever heard of it? 62,000 dead 175,000 wounded
to save your asses from the kraut b@stards!
Lewis was proud to wave the CANADIAN flag when it suited him best
BUT when there was more money to be made he dumped it for the Union Jack or Stars and Stripes or whatever suited him that day!
Ya your right... all that country allegance stuff.....stupid...we should have stayed home!

Then, as you might have heard, he went to America and took over, under a British flag. What country does Michael Buffer say Lewis comes from again every time he fights? oh yeah, ENGLAND! statistics? War? Grow up you tool. Yeah I world war one, didn't nearly a million british people die in that war? get some perspective mate, Canada was a colony back then and you did what you were told, you did well, in world war 2 you did well again, and in the end we set you free after 200 years or so of loyal service. The reason you declared war on the same day as us is because we did it for you. You were listed as one of our possessions at the time, 3rd behind India and Australia. Why in the name of christ's fat cock do you even wanna bring world war 1 into anyways? Point is you've learned an important lesson. Dont argue history with british people you lose every time.

Hey, Im Canadian, and Im not going to say landmine is handling himself well but your no better with this shit... I can totally agree with you even in some of your points.. I think its a total crock of shit that every label on any product in all of Canada is written in French and English. But if you want to pry at this, it was YOU BRITS THAT LET THE FRENCH STAY FOR GODS SAKE. After the seven years war, do you know how many French people were inhabiting Canada?? Do you? Sorry, but you really ought to read up on this if you think it's crazy that WE let them speak French and live here..Who do you think WE are?? I believe from Britain originally ::** Or was it the native Indians who let the French have their province....

Are you kidding? All 4 would beat him.

Re: is MIKE TYSON underrated?
It was about Lennox Lewis and how I feel that a boxer,or any athlete for that matter should show some allegiance to the country that footed the bill for his training etc and Olympic exposure.
I don't care where he's from. If you represent Lower Slubovia in the Olympics after training there for 10 years on taxpayers dollars and then become a pro and say "no really I'm German, I was born In dusseldorff (or wherever)
"Cheer for me" Germany (ps I'm German)... then your a backstabbing turncoat HOMO ,and I hate you.

Re: is MIKE TYSON underrated?
Mike went downhill when he tried to be a rockstar. Like Arturro Gatti's father said to him,"you can either be a rockstar or a boxer. You can't be both."
