Gerald Mcclellan benefit organized by Nigel Benn?
I'd rather not get into the tired arguments about the allegations about Mcclellan's personal life and personality before the incident...
I just found this site.... http://www.geraldmcclellan.co.uk/index.htm ....
Apparently Nigel Benn has organized a benefit for Gerald for the 24th of this month. Gerald and his sisters will be flown out to England and Gerald and Nigel will be meeting for the first time in 12 years. Confirmed attendees already include names like Joe Calzaghe, Iran Barkley, Paul Ingle, Frank Warren, Michael Brodie, Prince Naseem, Steve Robinson, and Billy Hardy. I was really touched by this personally being a big fan of Gerald's. I always respected Nigel as an amazing warrior and one of the most exciting fighters to ever step in the ring, but I think this speaks volumes for him as a human being. Big props to Nigel for setting this up. Boxing can be such a cruel sport, its good to see that there are still people out there who care about boxing's fallen warriors.

Re: Gerald Mcclellan benefit organized by Nigel Benn?
It's nice that they are doing this but seems a little strange that this will be the first time Gerald has met Nigel since they fought 12 years ago.
I'm not sure what kind of condition Gerald is in and whether he is aware enough to appreciate this and to be conscious of what's happening around him?
I know his sisters really care for him though and I guess they wouldn't allow him to attend such a public and potentially stressful event if they didn't think he was up to it.
I hope it goes well for him.

Re: Gerald Mcclellan benefit organized by Nigel Benn?
I hope so too. I remember reading about another benefit featuring Bernard Hopkins, and how he joked around with B-Hop. I'm really curious to know if Gerald will be aware of whats going on, I really hope they do a good write-up on it.

Its got to be a hard thing to face a man you beat into the state McClellan is in. Also as a fighter Benn would not have wanted to face an ex fighter knowing that he is that way because of fighting....It is a reminder of what could be you at any second

Re: Gerald Mcclellan benefit organized by Nigel Benn?
I've read it in my boxing monthly and its true, Benn has found God and has finally found his peace with it, and is ready to give generously to the G-man.

Re: Gerald Mcclellan benefit organized by Nigel Benn?
yeah Benn's a right bible basher these days
'I just want to show people that God is real. God is greater than all of us, otherwise I would not be doing this.'
Atonement
Just for a moment, the old anger flares as Nigel Benn gets ready for what will probably be the toughest fight of his life. He is in his mansion overlooking the Costa de la Calma in Majorca but the prospect of a reunion in London in two weeks time with Gerald McClellan induces anything but serenity in his soul. It has been 12 years since they met for the first time, 12 years since they nearly killed each other in a http://observer.guardian.co.uk/sport...005422,00.html

I think Nigel is only doing it because no one else is ;)
At the end of the day it shouldn't be down to him to help GM and while im on this note...Where the F*ck is his so called 'best buddy' Roy Jones with his millions? ;)
Funny how when you fall your so called mates stear well clear and it's the same in all walks of life 8)

Re: Gerald Mcclellan benefit organized by Nigel Benn?
From what I hear Roy Jones was one of the very few fighters who actually helped Mcclellan from day 1

So why is he so in need of a benefit? ::**
Credit to Benn for helping, the boxing community should have some kind of organisation that can automatically provide for the worst fallouts of this sport...

I have talked to Geralds sister Lisa as recently September we had a very long conversation about alot of things including the fight and the aftermaths.. She cleared up alot of the myths and misconceptions about the that tragic night Lisa will go to an occasional fight here and there, she said she was at the Roy Jones vs Glenn Johnson fight and was shaken up when Roy got KO'D and kind of gave her flashbacks..
Gerald is fine and cognizant of his surroundings, although he is still Blind and dosent have his wits 100%... Lisa told me that Gerald is still Gerald and has alot of his personality and traits he had before(in a positive way) he is gregarious, playful and mischievios and also has his moments of being a pain but all in all he's as good as his situation allows..
She said he is doing much better and adapted greatly since the CNN documentery with Teddy Blackburn(Boxing Photographer) aired a few years ago
As far as his health go's he is excellent his vital signs are great and probably better than any of ours she told me since his mental state is the way it is,the normal stresses we all face everyday dosent wear him down and effect his health...
Thats all I'm sharing out of respect for the family ;)
Lisa is an amazing woman along with his other sister who share time caring for Gerald they have really sacraficed there lives and own opportunities in life to take care of him and she tells me she has 0 regrets... I know People do this all the time and there are many that are in Geralds position and have good caregivers...Sadly I dont think any of them get the credit they deserve :-\

Re: Gerald Mcclellan benefit organized by Nigel Benn?
Well this came from Jones own mouth a good few years ago ;)
Jones said he would never visit GM while he was still an active fighter (even though he did weeks after in hospital ???) because he thought if he saw his mate in that state it would be in the back of his mind during fights and therefore put he himself at a disadvantage and after the GM incident Jones was very careful to say the least with who he fought.
And i quote..."I will only extend myself if totally neccesary-ie I'll fight who i choose to fight if i can at all help it."
Seeing his mate like that put the fear of god into Jones and he was called out (to his face) by Steve Collins and bottled it,Benn,Eubank etc were people he never wanted to fight becuase he was afraid he may end up the same way.
Jones skills were incredible but his heart was like a peanut.
They all kinow the score when they climb through the ropes at the end of the day and The Nevada state commision is already taking this forward,Just look at Hatton and Urangos gloves ;) 10 oz and they were up to Rickys f*cking elbows which was something Billy Graham said hindered him as he literally couldn't get his pin point body shots in those tight gaps.
Another Team Hatton excuse for a poor showing again or not? but it is fact!

A nice posting, JT :coolclick:
The Benn: McClennan fight is a fight that will always stay with me. It was a fight I remember watching on tv as a youngster and thinking wow!!! One of the great fights of all time IMO. Just such a horror to finish the way it did.

Nigels life wasnt all peaches and cream, I mean he has found God and all but Nigel had deal with alot of guilt and mental issues over all of this.
A benefit dosent mean that Benn is forking out exhorbinant amounts of cash...Remember people will donate and guests will pay to attend.. No different than a local benefit in your neighboorhood, this one is bigger since it has a riveting story behind it and has celebrities involved
Didnt you tell us you were attending Smash?? You still going?? Roy has helped out over the years.. Think about how fast money runs out over 12 years with outrageous medical bills not to mention food, shelter and rehab..
Heres an Illustration for you on Medical Bills.. Back in December I had a Kidney Stone I went to the Emergency Room for about 3 hours, after I got examined, MRI,Medication(Best Fuking Pain Killer I ever took ;D) etc... The bill was $3705 I S*** you not its sitting here on my counter... Luckily I have health insurance and it only cost me my $75 copay. I couldnt imagine how much Geralds bills have been over the years :-\ Do Boxers even have health insurance and how long does it last ???

Boxing needs an organisation to cover such costs because it could happen to anyone. As simple as.

yeah...I don't believe they do....I thought if it happened in the ring the would cover you but who knows....why do they pay those sanctioning fees?... Heck at least amateur boxers are cover...why aren't the pros?

Re: Gerald Mcclellan benefit organized by Nigel Benn?
Benn has arranged it and made the first move to his agent, and yeah i wanted to go and represent the site on interview missions as there's some top name fighters gonna be there.
I do know that to go as a punter will set you back £1000 per table :o
Tell you what mate,if you could get an interview with GM for the site that would be Brilliant. ;)

Re: Gerald Mcclellan benefit organized by Nigel Benn?
Aside from Gerald who is probably this era's most notable ring tragedy...Boxing itself should have simular things for all fighters who have suffered fates like his...Or fighters who gave us so much and walked away with so little...IMO all sanctioning bodies who get rich off the blood and guts of thses men should be forced to help out in some way.....
Truth is Boxing is a last resort for many young men...Men who have no chance any other way...and it makes me sick how these guys like King, Arum, Suliman and the rest get rich off their hard work......
I know it's not like anyone puts a gun to these guys heads and makes them fight but...IMO there is enough to go around at least to help with medical expenses

there is a dark side to the business of boxing no doubt about that, but those promoters you mentioned also gave a lot of young unknown fighters a chance at fame and fortune , chances they would have otherwise never had of course the promoter is in business to make money no doubt, hell everyone is fucking someone , some way or another in all businesses and business ventures , not just in boxing.. What would be nice is to teach the young guys how to hold on to their money someway .. Shit when you been broke your whole life and now you got cash flow, you just buy everything you always dreamed of and never had . The new shoes you never had, the nice house you never had, the fast cars, just full out spend spend … next thing you know your broke as a mutherfucker and 35 years old . that’s boxing ! Financial guidance is what the young fighter needs ! O0

Thanks for that JT Rock, excellent posting and I too always defend the G-man, he has sacrificed so much for the sport and deals with his plight with incredible dignity and his sister is obviously an amazing woman. I don't care what anyone says how Gerald was as a person, thats just speculation, he obviously has tremendous character.

Re: Gerald Mcclellan benefit organized by Nigel Benn?
Another thing about Gerald is that he loves visitors and an opportunity to talk to people... If I talk to Lisa anytime soon I will feel out the situation and see if it is appropriate to do an interview..
In some way I feel bad about doing it, only cause I feel in his case there are so many people in there lives probably prying and being intrusive, thats just not my style to be that way, as a matter of fact when I first emailed her I told her right up front that I wasnt involved with the press and I wasnt going to be intrusive, I was just a fan who appreciated all that Gerald gave us in the ring and felt deeply for his tragedy.
I was trying to set up a visit with him in the fall of last year, but work has me so busy and Illinois(were he lives) isint exactly close buy to me, so it would be a few day thing.. So I still plan on visiting the G-man sometime this year ;)
