We ALL have our fighters we love to hate. But why? I thought it'd be interesting to explore this side of us boxing fans. Heaven knows we're all pretty outspoken about the fighters we severely dislike. I myself have gone on record (every chance I get) to set the record straight on who I like, and who I severely DISlike.
So how about it? How do YOU decide that you dislike a specific fighter?
I choose to hate Oscar De La Hoya after he beat my favorite fighter Pernell Whitaker. If he would have won a close decision I might have said "OK the fight could have went either way" but he won by such large margins it was clearly bias. Same thing happened with him in the Quartey fight, since then I could not help but feel that there was a public bias in his favor which I hated.

As you can see i voted basically for attitude outside of the ring. Floyd Mayweather could fall into that category aswell but he backs up in the ring so he's cool with me.
I like the down to earth sort of fighter. Good respectful fighters like Hatton, Castillo, Cotto, Corrales, Gatti, De La Hoya
Does anyone see a pattern emerging? Am i just waiting for someone to shut Mayweather up??? ;D
LOL,I don't have a specific criteria for whether I dislike a fighter.I don't plan on disliking anyone,it just happens! For example,I dislike Judah. Just his poor behaviour,childish rants,delusions(Im P4P number1),the fact he gets numerous shots based on his ONE decent win over Spinks,all that combined= TREMENDOUS satisfaction watching Tszyu KTFO Zab!! I dislike Floyd but nowhere as much simply because,hey,the guy has skills,if he can back it up by fighting the best,thats all the better for him.
I guess I prefer fighters like Margarito,Cotto,Valero,Vazquez,JMM,RM,quieter fighters who let their fists do the talking.But,thinking about it,Morales was an arrogant guy yet I loved him!!!Tito too.But I guess they(Tito and Morales)more often than not,backed up their mouths with their fists.
I don't really find any fighters boring,I love boxing so much(apart from HWs)that I enjoy anything. I mean I enjoyed JT and B Hop! Have a cool click for an unique,thought provoking thread!

i dont like when a fighter talks about been the best in his division or P4P,then fights gimps like Manfredo or Biko instead of seeking the best fights/fighters.
Also don't like when a fighters price themselves out of fights, the big names earn a fuking fortune anyway. I liked when Junior Witter said about Hatton "I'll fight him for free, winner takes all" whether he would or not is questionable but if a fighters that confident in his ability they all should.
My two currently most hated fighters are Zab Judah and James Toney. Toney I have to give some grudging respect to, for having excelled for so many years at the lighter divisions. But his current status as heavyweight is a joke, IMO.
Zab is another story. He's nothing more than a little punk, who has gotten bitch-slapped into oblivion (ie: Kostya Tszyu), then chooses to take out his humiliation on the referee. And against Mayweather, he decided to end a lost cause by uppercutting his opponent in the nuts, then whacking him in the back of the head for good measure. Finally, when the riot ensued (right down Judah's alley)..... he went at the senior Mayweather like the little punk he is.

Why do i hate em.. Cos one ..obviously true bastards.. But mainly..my man tito fought em .. and it was theyr previous conduct in and the run up to those fights...
Its mainly anything that opposes theyr favourite fighters..
Or in cases of peeps like judah its to do with personal preferences etc...
Some people like the good guys some people like the bad guys...
So when toney, judah and mayorga etc come out and badouth theyr opponents people get the hump with em... And they're first impressions can last forever..

I voted personality inside the ring and personality outside the ring.
I usually either like a person right away or dislike them right away. Boxers included. I may watch an interview and decide I like them or dislike them before I see them box. I may see them box before I hear them speak and make the same judgement.
That doesn't mean I can't asses their skills. Still, I'll never wear their t-shirt. On the other hand I can be high on a certain fighter and still talk trash about them. Sam Peter makes me sick with his post fight inteviews for instance...
I have gone for ducks good fighters and Other; someone who always has an excuse, i can understand now and then there are valid excuses, but certain fighters always have one.
Really don't care about how they are out of the ring, i watch Boxing for what goes on inside the ring.

Okay you guys. I dislike Mayweather with a passion. Mainly because he doesn't fight the best yet still claims to be the best. I also don't like the fact that if he was so damn great (the greatest ever he claims), wouldn't he be able to finish fighters off. Do you really think that SRR would have boxed Baldomir to a UD?
As much as you all dislike Zab, he would fight king kong. James Toney will fight anyone. They are cocks, they are disillusioned, but they fight.

i cant help it and i try not to but i cant help but dislike a fighter and want them to lose because of the way they conduct themselves out of the ring. eg i would just love to see oscar put floyd on his arse because i dislike the way floyd disrespects other fighters and claims that he has faught the best out there and if he retired after oscar he would cement his legacy as the greatest ever. bull shit.
and another reason i dislike floyd is because i think he is awesome in his talent and ability and he hasnt given the fans the fights they want and he hasnt given us the best ifghts he could have.
I usually hate fighters for stupid reasons.
For instance, I am always hoping the Corey Spinks is serisouly injured after watching him dance to the ring.
I voted ducks good fighters and his fans. Which is pretty much the reason I dislike Calzaghe. The guys a good fighter. Never said he wasn't. He has skills. But he's never left home for a big fight. There's no elite names on his resume. Only decent names on it were fighters already passed there primes. And one overrated, in-over-his-head fighter. He holds a bogus, minor league belt. And thinks defending it against obscure European club fighters is a great accomplishment. He constantly whines and cries about wanting a big fight. But does little about it. Whenever there is talk of one. Some thing always comes up. And according to him, it's never his fault. But the worse thing of all are his misguided groupies. They ignore all facts. Constantly make foolish excuses (some times they just straight lie). And they elevate him to Godlike status. .
Let's do the rundown because it's different for all. I don't care if a fighter has a boring style or if he has an attitude outside of the ring. I don't care what country he is from and...well yeah. Let's just run down the list.
Calzaghe - He beat Lacy. After months of wondering if he was ever going to fight Lacy, he came out and just dominated him. I'm not on the "Lacy is done" bandwagon, by any means. No way. The guy could be a great fighter but sthat was the most disappointing night of boxing ever for me.
Audley Harrison - I watched him fight Dominic Guinn. I've never pulled my hair out more over a fight in my life.
Judah - He's vastly overrated. Has a somewhat delusional fanbase (but that isn't to speak for the entire fanbase, I'm a Peter fan and some of them seem to think he walks through the division with ease)

Point is, like someone posted, sometimes it's not a clearcut reason for disliking a fighter. Sometimes it seems like a "stupid" reason. Nevertheless, we as boxing fans tend to dislike some things more than others.
I myself voted "Attitude outside the ring" and "Ducks good fighters." But sometimes it's something else altogether that irks me about a fighter. Take John Ruiz, for instance. Nothing wrong with his attitude outside the ring, nor do I think he necessarily ducks good fighters (there's a scarcity at HW nowadays anyway). But I just can't stomach his BORING fighting style. Punch and clinch.... punch and clinch..... punch and clinch..... ad nauseum.
With other fighters, it's the hype machine. When HBO or Showtime insist on putting a fighter on a "bigger-than-life" pedestal, I just tend to react in the other direction. So you see.... it's not always the same reasons.

Personality inside and outside the ring and the key ones for me. I absolutely hated that twat Prince Naseem with a passion. I never liked Lewis so you could throw fighting style into it.
Agreed. I have no respect for Ruiz. With the hugging, blatant headbutting of Kirk Johnson and exaggerating the effect of low blows, always making excuses after losses. Also his jumping up and down when a draw was announced in his third Holyfield fight (what kind of competitor gets that excited and happy over a draw?). His total lack of class before, during, and after fights which doesn't help build up the fight at all. I do like Mayorga and Vargas because they give their all during their fights, their trash talk before fights increases the anticipation and they go out on their shields-to me that makes up for the trash talking before fights and excuse making after fights. PBF for trying to maintain a thug image when he could have easily been the next Golden Boy media-PR wise.Quote:

Of the fighters I dislike I will say that when trash talking and personality don't mesh with the fighting style it makes it hard for me to like a guy.
For example, Sergio Mora....he "toed the line" vs Eric Reagan and honestly when you are that blatent about your superiority you should be able to put the guy away right then and there. If you have no power you shouldn't dare a guy to go toe to toe with you ESPECIALLY when he's a nobody.
That's another huge issue for me....when you fight a bum don't act like you've just beat the best ever....when did Ray Robinson or Joe Louis jump up on the turn buckles to celebrate a victory over a bum???
I understand the need for the feeling of invincibility but as a fighter you need to be humble as well and sometimes even show some respect
#1 is style. I gotta judge what a man does in the ring above anything else to decide whether I like them or not. What they say outside the ring is fine with me. Showboating and trash talking is all fine with me. Like lance said the sport needs villains and characters. But guys I can't stand watching in the ring get my first nod for boxers I dislike.
#2 is ducking good fighters. Because if they meet the first criteria and I like the way they fight but they choose not to fight anyone the fans wanna see, that does no good either.

It took me years to forgive Oscar for that. I didn't start to like him again until the first Mosley fight. Once he took the loss to Tito and got beat by Mosley, I think he got a little more character, or at least I started relate to him more once he had suffered some set backs.
