Ref throws towel back out!
Anyone seen this before? As happened tonight when Graham Eark fought Katsidis, Earl was taking a beating and his corner threw in the towel only for the ref Mickey Vann to throw it back out and let the fight continue. Seconds later Earl knocked Katsidis down. Ive never seen a ref do this before and just wondered if anyone had?
Also I couldnt help thinking what if the worst had happened and Earl was seriously hurt after the incident, how would Mickey Vann have felt then?

Re: Ref throws towel back out!
That was a amazing!!
Micky Vann is an experienced ref and it appears he got it right!!
He can see their eyes and if they are slightly concussed, the corner man cant!

Re: Ref throws towel back out!

Did he get it right? At the time Id say yes but the fight still ending with Earl quitting on his stool, who knows a fighter better than his own corner?

Yup but unlike Earl now I've got the tissues I'm ready to go again.
I'm going to try and hold on a bit longer though cos I want the Audrey knockout to be the cumshot

The ref did it the Erik Morales-Eddie Croft fight a couple of years ago. The corner threw it in the second round. The ref just picked it up and threw it back out. There's no rule that says a ref has to stop the fight if the corner throws in the towel. If he thinks the fighter can still continue, than he won't acknowledge the towel.

Re: Ref throws towel back out!
This was poor refereeing, this is why boxing sometimes cops a bad rap because of the macho thing.
Earl was never going to win this fight and that was evident from round one.
Imagine if Jay Nady had not stopped the Tszyu v Judah fight.
Could you imagine the damage that would have been done to Judah if it went into a third round!!
Zab Judah owes his life to Jay Nady.

Re: Ref throws towel back out!
Id have him in hospital for the night for observation thats for sure

Re: Ref throws towel back out!
The reason is that ONLY the referee can stop the fight!
If you throw in the towel or enter the ring your fighter will be disqualified. Loss by DQ same as if you jumped into the ring and held
the opponents arms down or hit him.
BUT usually the ref takes it as a signal and then stops the fight.
It depends on the particular rules, sometimes only the ref, sometimes the ref and doctor can stop the fight. The ref in question probably didn't like being "told" by a corner man when to end the fight.
Comments?

I think had Earl waltzed across the ring like Zab did then Vann would have stepped in. As it was the man was centre ring trading shots and just about to land his punch of the night. Its easy now to say that Earl never looked like winning (I agree with you, he looked wrong from the start) but with the benifit of hindsight he wouldnt have fought at all ;)

Sorry mate but i think it was an excellent bit of refereeing, 5 seconds later earl landed a beauty of a right hand and put kat down, Didn't you see kats legs for the next 1minute after getting up?
He was all over the place and it needed just one clean punch more to put him down again.
Fair enough Kat was landing clearly more shots and the power behind them was amazing, but he wasn't far from losing that fight
still hats off to both men what a performance they gave, did you say that bulge of swelling on earls left eye (Ouch)

Re: Ref throws towel back out!
that 2nd round was the round of the year so far! it also gave me an erection Bilbo! hahaha was a good set of fights. LOL at Audley!

Re: Ref throws towel back out!
Vann was proved correct, he threw out the towel then within 30 seconds Earl knocked Katsidis down. Excellent refereeing, Earl's eyes were clear, he was ready to fight.
-
Re: Ref throws towel back out!
Only the referee can stop the fight. But nobody knows there fighters like the corners do and the referee should recognize the throwing in of the towell. For a ref like Micky Vann to do that is surprising honestly.

Re: Ref throws towel back out!
I could accept that Vann was correct if the fight went the distance, however since it was stopped just two rounds later i'm not happy with the call.

Re: Ref throws towel back out!
katsisdis is the man,phark yeah.

Re: Ref throws towel back out!
I think the ref was right at that moment in time. He used his experience and judged that Earl was still fighting back although taking heavy shots. Confirmed by a decent shot coming back from Earl, rocking Katsidis. Although it was ruled a knockdown I'm not sure his gloves touched down. Katsidis looked a bit shakey immediately after that and the count probably helped him clear his head.
Great fight, hope to see a bit more of Katsidis now. :)

Re: Ref throws towel back out!
Nit-picking! The guy ends up in Hospital you dickhead!!

Re: Ref throws towel back out!
hey as anyone got the Katsidis fight on video?
Klitschkofan it wont let me play your you tube towel thing!
Cant wait to see it...

Re: Ref throws towel back out!
I've seen it happen before. The one that immediately comes to mind is the second Louis/Schmeling fight. If you can get the video Schmeling's corner throws the towel into the ring and the ref picks it up and throws it out of the ring and it ends up hanging on the ropes.

Zab Judah owes his life to Jay Nady.
I wouldn't say that. Zab was knocked down near the end of the 2nd. He was on rubbery legs, but he was aware. It's possible in that 60 seconds he could have recovered and went on to dominate Kostya.
But at the same time I really didn't have a problem with the stoppage.

Re: Ref throws towel back out!
This happens more regularly than I'd thought at first.
The fight can only be stopped by the ref , doctor or the fighter in most modern rules.
It happened in the Danny Willimas fight recently also.
In the first Abraham Miranda fight.

It is more of a question on exactly who threw in the towel? (I did not see the fight) only the head cornerman can throw in the towel so if the second or the cut man did it then that is why the towel was thrown back out.
If it was the head corner man then Graham Earl lost the fight no matter what happened after the towel was tossed back out.
The only other explanation would be the old "Only the ref can stop the fight rule" but I am not sure if that applies to the towel being thrown in.
I may be wrong but that is always how I thought it worked.

Re: Ref throws towel back out!
Most commisions no longer let you throw in a towel, the corners got to signal to the ref

Its a hazard,if the ref doesnt see it,or the other fighter doesnt see it,theyre going skating

:lolhaha:
That's ridiculous. Health and safety gone mad.
So they decided there's more chance of someone injuring themselves slipping on a towel than a fighter taking unnecessary blows because a corner can't get the refs attention?

Most of the time, the ref's got a better view of the fighter anyway. Most of the time its the ref or the ring doctor who pulls the fight long before the corner wanted it stopped

Zab Judah owes his life to Jay Nady.
I completely disagree..
Judah's inexperiance and immaturity cost him that fight and if he had of taken a knee he wouldnt have gotten stopped.. Zab did well in the first round and before that tzsyu punch the fight wasnt a white wash.. it was just the legs.. he got up too soon, didnt have his whits about him and it cost him the fight.. i honestly dont even think it was a murderous punch..
