Manfredo's chances...
Ok.. So ive just been watching pemberton - Manfredo..
And ok..Pemberton is no joe calzaghe..But i think peter might just show joe something...
The quality opposition isnt the same..But peter was still looking very nice and sharp.. If he can look that sharp when he fights joe..Then he might do good...
Also i think there might be somewhat of a quality shock for joe too..
Joe's opposition hasnt been great..Jeff lacy would probably beat manfredo.. But peter is a much better boxer.. And is a different fight for joe..
Also i dont think joe has really taken peter seriously and lacks motivation for the bout..
And what with peter having freddie as his trainer for his last few fights..And all the hype of sugar ray helping out.. I know sugar ray is no trainer..But im sure some words of wisdom and if peter respects ray enough to listen to what he tells him and go out there to do it.. We might well see some nice work..
The fight is getting closer and im a total sucker for the underdog.. Love an upset..
And im truely coming around to the thought of it..
Anyone else feel this way?
Peace

Re: Manfredo's chances...
I'd love to see Manfredo pull this one off but it's going to be a monumental ask of him.
I actually think if the fight was taking place in Rhode Island he would have a chance, albiet a small one.
But travelling to Wales to face 20,000 hostile fans, and the longest reigning unbeaten champ in boxing, who handed out the beatdown to end all beatdowns to the last American hype who went over there, then Peter would need balls of steel not to be intimidated.
For Peter to have any chance whatsoever he needs to have a good first round.
If Calzaghe rocks him early I can see what little self belief he must have just literally draining away in an instant.
BUT if somehow Manfredo manages to remain totally unfazed by the occasion, then I'd say he does have a chance. Calazaghe isn't unbeatable, doesn't punch nearly as hard as he used to, has hand problems, struggles to make weight etc.
Stranger things have happened, just not very often :)

Re: Manfredo's chances...
I dont buy into Manfredo beating Joe Calzaghe. It would take something of James Buster Douglas proportions for him to do so. I dont even think the fight will be that close either. The Bika fight is not going to be repeated. Calzaghe will beat him down, and hope upon hope, actually go into a meaningful fight...
I know its not on the agenda but I would dearly love Calzaghe to fight Kessler, probably wont be Kessler though...
-
Re: Manfredo's chances...
It seems to me this fight is purely a gimmic
Pandering to TV ratings for headline generation.
Its going to be a boxing lesson of monolithic proportions - why doesnt joe try boxing blindfolded or something just to make it a contest.. cant believe hes even doing it when theres Kessler out there which is what would be a meaningful fight

Peter couldn't knock out Alfonso Gomez, a fighter whose great ring acomplishments include a stalemate trilogy with Jesse Feliciano.

Oh come on in all fairness Alfonso gomez is probably one of if not the best fighter to have been on the contender shows in a way...
The potential to be great is there its just never really came together for him..
His skills are excellent..I love his style he can really fight.. I remember first time i saw him he was knocking out sparring partners left right and centre..
I really dont know how his career has never really picked up but yet people like mora and smith have been getting payed and builded theyr name up since the show..
-
Re: Manfredo's chances...
Manfredos chances are slim but he will give it his best

He's not quite a tomato can but he's no world class fighter, thats for sure.
Plus he's a welterweight. If Peter can't knock out a 147 lb journeyman in two attempts how is he going to stop a 168 lb undefeated Ring Champion?
-
Re: Manfredo's chances...
The answer to why Gomez's career hasn't picked up...weed. He couldn't appear on a Contender card becuase he tested positive, and his fat ass should really be fighting at 147. He would be a monstrer at welter.

Oh yeh i remember hearing that.. Cos he was sparking middleweight sparring partners on the contender..
At welter he would indeed be a banger..
It wouldnt suprise me if he was not very motivated..He is ranked at light middleweight atm i think..
But if he could make welter again perhaps he could make some sort of impact..
A fair enough reason for peter not bieng able to stop gomez is simple..I think you rush in too fast to discredit him...
For one..Manfredo is originally a welterweight.. Then light middle for a period before making middleweight for the sole purpose of bieng on the contender..
Gomez also bieng a welter weight.. Has still never been stopped...
And as you can see peter is looking fairly strong at 168 right now..
I imagine it has taken a while and good training to help him fill out to feel strong at supermiddleweight
But you can see by his body type that its a good weight for him and hes looked strong recently..
-
Re: Manfredo's chances...
It will be closer that the Lacy fight, but Manfredo can only win if Joe doesn't take him seriously or if Joe breaks a hand. Unlike Lacy, Manfredo has a little skill and a little defense. He knows how to roll with punches and he knows how to counter. Also, Peter has more power at 168 than he's had at any other weight. Calzaghe should still win pretty easily, but I don't think it will be a Lacy-level asswhipping.

Manfredo has never been a welterweight! He started out at around 160, had a few fights at super middleweight early in his career then alternated between middle and Jr middle. He's fighting now at the weight he started out at.

Im sure it was manfredo who was a welter...
Perhaps im wrong..But im certain that the espn team was talking about it in the pemberton fight..
Perhaps im wrong.. But thats espn's fault if i am..lol
I still think gomez is underrated to make a long story short.. lol
Peace

since they talked about this i have been uming and ar'ing about how it will end, im certain now calzaghe will end it in the first round, i think when the night comes and hes look over at him, he will just want to get the job over and done with asap. Manfredo doesn't have the power to really hurt joe, the reach to do any jabbing or setting up, calzaghe will be way to fast and just get in and hurt him and end it in the first IMo.

I hope you're right. We've not had an early KO for a while
-
Re: Manfredo's chances...
Totally disagree.. I say manfredo at least lasts the distance!
-
Re: Manfredo's chances...
as of late, Joe C has been pressured for the K.O against less than worthy opponents, I feel he will look for the K.O
Manfredo's chances...
Slim and None, and right now, we are all out of slim.
The fight will be a TKO.
I dont think Joe C has it in him to KO him
But he has the intensity to make a ref or Corner, stop the fight.
-
Re: Manfredo's chances...
Joe calzaghe is overated he has been spoon fed by frank warren he should be fighting mikkel kessler now thats a fight
-
Re: Manfredo's chances...
Manfredo's weakness is if a fighter starts to get off power punches Manfredo will stand still and try to block them.... against Calzaghe that could cost him.
-
Re: Manfredo's chances...
I must admit though, the sheer scale of the challenge ahead of him will make me root for him though.
Calzaghe has long been my favourite fighter but this fight is tantamount to picking on the spotty nerdy kid with glasses at school and for that I'd love to see him get spanked

Not at shot. If he couldn't KO Lacy, he ain't gotta KO Manfredo early. I'm not staying he won't stop him, but you guys who think Joe is going to blow him out immediately are overrating Joe and underrating Peter. If Manfredo gets KO'd in round 1, I'll run Providence Place Mall wearing nothing but a Welsh flag to cover my privates :) He'll hang around until late and/or lose a decision.

do they make welsh flags that small?
Anywho....
What performance has manfredo shown you, that makes you think he can hang with Calz? Or even any TRUE top contender? His 3 losses out of the last 5 fights?
-
Re: Manfredo's chances...
Calzaghe will have to break both hands for this to be competitive.
-
Re: Manfredo's chances...
I would have to agree with everyone that said slim chance. On paper he loses in every aspect except maybe heart.
-
Re: Manfredo's chances...
i think manfredo might last full distance manfredo is pretty tough fighter i see calzaghe winning easily but it wont be as simple as abc as some people expect remember when calzaghe fights lesser opponents he dont perform as good

Including me, though I wasn't in the arena. Fuk Jesse Feliciano he's a punk ass bitch and Vince Phillips won that fight.
Now as for Manfredo's chances, probably slim and none.
But I'll be rootin for him, not cus I'm a Manfredo fan, but because I cannot stand the fukin Calzaghe hype machine. I hope Manfredo embarrases his ass by doin better than expected and possibly puting him on his ass. Its possible. Kabary Salem did it. Who? Exactly. O0

First off, get your facts straight. If you want to paint to weakest picture, you can say he lost 3 of his last 8. The contender loss to Gomez came in a 5 rounder when his last fight was a 12 rounder. Then he lost a legit fight to Mora, but he was ROBBED in the second Mora fight. He has never been KO'd.
And I ain't saying Peter is going to win. He's just not going to get KO'd early.
Hmm, who has Manfredo beaten...can I flip that question back to you? Who has Calzaghe beaten? :)
-
Re: Manfredo's chances...
I'll agree with you that calzaghe has beaten them all,
But are you even trying to compare the caliber of fighters they both have faced?
Seriously?
-
Re: Manfredo's chances...
Of course Calzaghe has fought better opposition, but it's not like Calzaghe has huge names on his resume, other than Eubanks 10 years ago, and it's not like Peter is any worse than quite a few fighters who have gone the distance with Calzaghe, ie Salem or Ashira. Unlike Lacy, Peter has a little defense. He can roll and counter and he will have a game plan. That will allow him to survive for while.
Manfredo looks better at SMW than he ever has. He's improved drastically in every area. He's come along way since the TV show.

I hope so cuz if he hasnt then this fight will be a farce with Peter getting blown away in no time. Manfredos defence is a big concern in this fight . No doubt he is game enough and will come to fight but that style palys right into Joes hands .
After winning every fight since turning pro it would be a massive shock if Joe lost to a guy like Peter after the guys he's beaten . I cant see Peter winning by lucky punch or points but this is boxing and anything can happen .
