Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
Urkal for all intensive purposes seems like a soft touch. Sure he's ranked in the top ten, and can box from what I hear, but he is gonna be there in PR to make Miguel Cotto look good, maybe great. So, having never seen Urkal fight, what should I expect besides a Cotto victory? Will it be competitive for a while like Abdullaev vs Cotto was? Can Urkal pull off the upset? Educate me on this guy with the weird ass name. ;D

Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
Well...the only time I ever saw him was 6 years ago against Tszyu. And he went into that fight as the guy who was expected to be soft and more tactical but him and Tszyu battled it out in a phone booth for a while and he held his own for a few rounds. He really through caution to the wind and he hit Tszyu a bunch of times early on in the fight but he faded and Tszyu took the initiative and pounded out a decision.
It was because of that fight that made people think Judah would handle Tszyu. Urkal really gave a good showing and came up just short against a great fighter even after fighting a fight that people didn't expect him to.
BUT, that was 6 years ago. Urkal is 37 and has been beat on his own soil by Vivian Harris twice now. His only KO win in the last 5 years came against a guy who had only won 1 fight in his career. Even without seeing Urkal within the last 6 years I'm pretty comfortable in calling this a complete and utter mismatch.

Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
Basically, it could be like Cotto vs Abdulaev for a while, if Cotto wasn't any better than he was when he fought Abdulaev. He's improved too much for that now I think.. Although Urkal can box and is maybe better than Abdulaev he's small, a bit older, and hasn't been active against any good fighters since losing twice to Vivian Harris..

Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
Thanks for the information, Cool Click to both of you gentleman. 37? He's gettin up there for a welterweight isn't he? Cotto should TKO him, but maybe not. Could be a good fight

Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
Yea CC back... But don't get your hopes up for a good fight I expect Cotto to massacre him regardless of what issues he can give Miguel for a bit. Green vs Miranda is the fight on this card, really should be the main event. If you have a chance to watch RMarquez vs Vasquez on showtime Id pick that over the entire PR card in a second.. Don't think Ill be able to watch it though.

Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
I think Urkal will trouble Cotto for the first round and then slowly he'll start losing to Cotto. Then Cotto will stop him late. Vivian Harris stopped him at 140 Cotto shouldnt have trouble doing it at 147

CC. That's probably what will happen. Also P4PKing, I gots to work on Saturday as usual so I will be missing both cards. Least I got DVR though, so I can record em. Israel and Rafael are gonna throw down I'm sure! Both guys are bombers, I favor Marquez myself in there though, sturdier chin and probably a bit better boxer. Vazquez's back is shaped like a "V" though, he's built for power, like Miranda, and he's got a good jab, and showed great heart and balls gettin up off the floor to KO Jhonny Gonzalez last time out. Who ou pickin in that one?

Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
I see Cotto winning inside the distance before 7 . Urkal is a clever fighter who has always relied on good movement i cant see him being able to keep Cotto off of him for too long !!
Against Tszyu , Urkal was very busy in the periods in which Kostya went to sleep or took rests he did the same against Harris untill Harris caught him late with quality uppercuts .
Difference is Cotto is much more insistent than either KT and VH he will build pressure and trap Urkal and pound him out of there !!
Urkal might be able to shut up shop for a bit but Cotto has far too much quality for him .

Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
You can expect Cotto to KTFO Urkal in 3-4 rounds, would have been more competitive 5 years ago at 140, but not now at 147.
-
Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
yeah exactly, 3 years ago this would've been a great fight to test Cotto out with, but to be honest Cotto is too polished and Urkal too old for it to mean much. I never rated Urkal that highly in the first place, but he's been around the block a few times and should be able to hang with Cotto a few rounds before the one-sided beatdown commences.

Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
cotto is gonna batter him and stop him in 6.

Not sure at all. My mind was saying R Marquez as he is probably the better boxer like you say, but he is also moving up in weight to fight a guy who could easily have moved up to feather himself.. So really it all depends how Marquez chin and power hold up compared to Vasquez'.. I picked Vasquez in the sportsbook just because the odds were slightly against him and I could definetly see it going either way. Hope Vasquez wins as I like him a bit more and have seen more of him as well.

I'm goin with Marquez, but it could go either way. Vazquez is at least a full weight class bigger than Marquez, just him going down so much against Gonzalez makes me think that Marquez may just put him down and keep him down.

Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
Marquez...a better boxer then Vasquez ???

Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
This was a fighter that HBO didn't want Hatton to take because it was not appealing at all.
-
Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
Urkal is a good fighter but at 37 i can't see him troubling Cotto to much.
How he is still rated so highly has me baffled after two losses to Vivian Harris!
Urkal is tough and Cotto will probably have to go the distance.

Urkal must be damn tuff then. Of course Paulie Faganaggi went the distance, so Urkal could too. But I doubt it from what I am hearing. Cotto looks strong at 147, not weight drained a bit, and he's destined for greatness.

Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
Cotto by stoppage round 4/5.
If this was in Germany I think Urkal might try and make a fight of it, one last hurrah and all that.
Since it's in PR, I think he'll happily take the contribution to his pension. I know these guys are proud but sheer common sense says do enough and just enough.
Can you imagine if Urkals does win though :o
-
Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
Urkal will come out stron and probably win 2 or 3 of the early rounds but i think Cotto will break him down early to the body and stop the older fighter in 5 or 6
-
Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
To be honest I'm not really even looking forward to this fight because I think Cotto is going to have him out of there inside of 5 rounds. I think the Miranda vs Greene is going to steal the show I think most people are looking more forward to that fight then the Cotto fight.

I didn't know that he broke his jaw in the Tszyu fight...

And if that wouldn't be sad enough...he only managed a pretty close UD against the 2-4-1...
I have the feeling that Cotto will eat Urkal alive...

Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
Oktay Urkal is another Carlos Baldomir. He is old, foriegn, hard headed and hits soft.
I hope Cotto does not waste much time with this guy.
We never know with Cotto.
Prediction?
Cotto in 3.
It should be Cotto in 1 but Cotto likes to take his time.
-
Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
You're going to see an older fighter get hammered from pillar to post for about 5 rounds before he licks canvas.

He fought Kostya Tszyu with a broken Jaw and fought the rematch with Vivian Harris sick and with a broken nose. He's tough

I expect it to be a little trickier, 7-10 rounds before Cotto bombs him. You learn a lot of tricks as a veteren in Germany, with all those wins and a lack of skill there's only one way to get by, and Urkal got by. Saying that, Kessler BOMBED Beyer who I like a lot more than Urkal so you never know, but thats my gut instinct, 7-10 rounds before Cotto shifts him.

Re: Cotto vs Urkal, what to expect?
I forgotten to mention this earlier...but the fight won't be televised here in Germany...
And normally Urkals fights are on tv(especially title fights) or at least a summary...
So either the tv rights were to expensive for poor german tv station or they are expecting
no win at all from Urkal...
Whatever the reason... they(tv station called ARD ;D) be damned...I was really looking
forward for this one...

Urkal fought Tszyu six years ago and was unbeaten until that point, he put up a good fight and proved what a tough fighter he is. My guess is Cotto will win well by decision.
Cotto will learn a lot from this guy.
