Why do a lot of tysons opponents think his power was overrated?.

A lot of tysons knock out victims have said that they have been hit harder.

Probably along the same lines of Baldo saying Judah was faster & hit harder...they don't like ponying up to the fact that they really got their asses handed to them. ;D

Because most of them don't remember the fight. THe best example is Larry Holmes. I think there are guys who hit harder than Tyson or because of their hit were able to land cleaner like Lewis, Ibeabuchi, etc.

A lot of Tyson's opponents would enter the ring literally scared for their lives.
So even if they got KTFO harder than they've ever been KTFO ever, that was nothing compared to the death they were expecting!

Remember the second Bruno fight? Frank had to have messed his pants at some point, he was shaking like a shitting dog before he even got into the ring!

It's just stubborness and pride on the part of the opponents. Guys never want to admit that they faced something they'd never seen before. That's why fighters would get knocked unconsciousness by Tyson and then try to claim they'd been hit harder before.

To given another example, IIRC, Toney claimed that Peter didn't hit as hard as some of his other opponents, which is obviously BS.

I remember after Tito KO'd Joppy, Joppy admitted that it was the hardest he'd ever been hit, and I remember being surprised because fighters are never that honest.

As other people have mentioned, fighters do the same thing with speed too. They always try to say that they've fought someone who's faster than their current opponent. I remember when Greg Haugen fought Pernell Whitaker, Haugen said that he wouldn't have any problems with Pernell's speed, because he had already fought Vinny Pazienza, and Pazienza was faster than Pernell. That was pretty funny.

Yeah James Toney claimed that Merqui Sosa had hit him harder than Sam Peter. Sosa could crack, but come on!
As for Haugen, I finally watched two of his three fights with Paz, the first and third, the ones he lost, and honestly, those were not all that entertaining fights I didn't think. Haugen just followed Paz around, threw some jabs and straight rights, not much more. He was too damn inactive, I take it he was always like that?

Its the surprise factor you expect the worse and its never as bad as you might think if you stand your ground .

Sometimes its easier to steel yourself for somebody who for example throws a big right hand because maybe they see it coming whereas a short hook can completely take somebody out of their boots .



Tyson was never as fluent later in his career he was slower and loaded up more he was still powerfull and you had to defence for the most part but you could see him coming .

I think alot of his fights were stopped early a great example was Lou Saverese it was clear he was out of his depth but Tyson hadnt really connected like we know he can , he was very angry and it just seemed like the sane thing to do .

Alot of fighters as already mentioned don't want to admit it to themselves and also interviewing a fighter straight after a fight the adrdrenalin is still pumping .

I think Daxx was saying without saying that Botha was a bum. Which he was. Mike Johnson was still my favorite KO. I swear he must have been part owl with how his head turned around.

OK now go over that list again.....Spinks scared to death before the fight started....and IMO the rest speak for themselves....Holmes was old and in all actuality should have been out of there quicker...Learn the difference between guys going down due to the fact they were more emotionally defeated then physicaly...Name a great fighter in his prime Tyson KO'd with one punch....and name a fighter with the heart and chin of Joe Frazier...Now you are trying to compare top of the line GM cars with that of fine German or British luxery and sports cars

Hahaha, didn't Toney also say that Merqui (SP) Sosa was a harder puncher? I can't remember if he said that after the Rahman fight or after the Peter fight.

You could tell by the way Tyson's punches landed, that he hit really hard. He just exploded his opponents into dust.

Here's a wacky opinion coming from a wacky guy...Tyson scared the crap out of fighters because there was NEVER a fighter that combined speed, power and combinations the way Mike Tyson in his prime did....As the legend of Tyson grew opponents expected brutality so when they were KO'd it was almost a let down from what they expected...so then come the quotes "he doesn't hit that hard", "I've been hit harder" and my fav "The ref stopped it too early"...these quotes came because these oppenents never expected to survive!
