Tribute to the linear heavyweight champs

Hello saddoboxing Forum. This is my first post and wanted to introduce myself by giving a tribute to the now lost heavyweight linear champions.

To me one of the biggest reasons the heavyweight division is in such a mess is the lack of a clear champion and the only thing that could save it is a tournament to declare an undisputed king and the beginning of a new era of linear champs.

So in memory of the last era of linear champs here it is the complete list. Sorry for those who are not hear, technically you were never a Hevyweight Champion in my eyes.

After Marciano left undefeated the heavyweight title was vacated and Floyd Patterson faught Archie Moore and knocked him out in the fifth to become the youngest heavyweight champion at the time.

P.S Unless your refering to liner champs only (which you probably are) John Tate was by far the worst heavyweight champ in history ;D

I'd argue that a prime 'Neon Leon' would have outworked and outhustled this overweight plodding Briggs !!

That Senior citizen was still the Linear champ though 8)

This is true even thaough Foreman was striped of one of his titles (can't remember which) and he was not really considered a champ by most. No one had defeated him yet until Briggs

Only thing missing from the list is Vitali Klitschko! He defeated Corrie Sanders after Lewis had retired to win the Rings vacant heavyweight championship.

Shannon Briggs was never a linear champ, not even close.

Holyfield beat Tyson in '96, and didn't lose again until he fought Lewis in '99. Briggs was never anything more than a paper champ, which is clearly evidenced by the a**kicking he took from Lennox.

So it was Tyson that beat Forman after Forman beat Moorer. Interesting; I always thought it looked like Shannon Briggs. ;)

Shannon Briggs didn't beat Foreman until 3 years after Foreman beat Moorer. And during those three years, a lot happened.
Foreman barely beat Axel Shultz, then was stripped of his belt for refusing to give him a rematch. Then he fought some guy named Grimsley and then Lou Savarese. By the time he fought Briggs, Foreman was the WBU champ, that's it.

In the meantime, Tyson had come out of retirement, KO'd Seldon and Bruno for belts, and then Holyfield had beaten him twice to become heavyweight champ.
When Briggs beat Foreman in late '97, Holyfield was regarded as the heavyweight champ, and Briggs only had one minor belt. Briggs wasn't a linear champ.

We are talking linearage, right back from O Sullivan to Lewis retireing

if Lewis makes a comeback and loses someone else takes the linear

Hold on I think it was broken by Marciano retireing undefeated anyway so......Oh I dont know

Yea, but Williard, Louis and Ali all came out of retirment to lose the belt and continue the lineage.
Williard to Dempsey
Louis to Charles
Ali to Frazier/Holmes

The only 3 times in history where the link is totally broke is where Tunney retired as champ, when Marciano retired as champ, and when Lennox Lewis retired as champ.
