Was lennox lewis power overrated?.
He is commonly mentioned as being one of the hardest punchers in heavyweight history . But he didnt score that many one punch knockouts or even knockouts for that matter. Some of his opponents such holyfield, tyson, phil jackson, mercer didnt think much of his power . Tommy morrison even said that lewis couldnt punch for shit.

Re: Was lennox lewis power overrated?.
He was a big puncher 32ko's in 41 wins speaks for itself but not one of the biggest punching heavy's of all time but even the biggest punching heavys could'nt knock everyone out
-
Re: Was lennox lewis power overrated?.
If anything his power is underatted imo. He didn't have the aggressive all out style that the likes of Tyson and Marciano had but if he caught someone he could send them to sleep with one punch.
He liked to outbox and break people down which is why he didn't have more knockouts but he hit as hard as anyone no question

Look at the Lewis-Morrison fight and tell me Morrison isn't feelings Lewis power. If anything it looks like Lewis couldn't feel Morrison's power. Morrison is the one who was dropped several times.
-
Re: Was lennox lewis power overrated?.
Exactly VD.....I mean Morrison, Tyson, and Jackson got stopped....it wasn't cause they were tired or anything it was because they got punched too much and TOO HARD

jackson was down 3 times holyfield is tough as nails hard to ko him ask big riddick and mercer again he is tough as nails and has iron chin hard to ko him again ask morrison and tyson ?? tried to stay up as long as he could but he got koed so i dont really know how anyone can say his power is overrated
didnt razor ruddock go 12 rounds with tyson ?? how many rounds did it take lewis to stop him ?? 2

yea it may of took something out of him but give credit where credit is due alot of boxing experts thought he would beat lewis and that was mighty impressive for lewis to stop him in only 2 rounds when tyson who is considered one of hardest hitting heavyweights ever had hard time with ruddock and ruddock managed to go distance with tyson 2nd time so i think its damn impressive and shows lewis power that he destroyed ruddock in only 2 rounds

Re: Was lennox lewis power overrated?.
Lennox was a massive puncher with great boxing ability and a great chin he would have stopped holyfield in 1st fight if he had gone for it when he had him on the ropes ive just watched Lennox had an iron chin on youtube great watch

Then why was he down everytime Lewis landed a punch ? He must have a real poor chin in that case . Tyson was never taken out with 1 right hand like he was when he fought Lewis.

i wouldnt go as far as a great chin mind you....his style of boxing prevented him from being hit but when he did get clean punched he melted,,,plus look at when he fought men his own size ie klitko,,,,he didnt look that good....poor chin id say O0
-
Re: Was lennox lewis power overrated?.
I disagree he only lost twice by ko his only losses i know but they were to 2 big punchers but through his career he took some massive blows to the chin he had a good if not great chin
-
Re: Was lennox lewis power overrated?.
That clip of Lewis taking a few whacks was posted not long ago. Iron chin is stretching things a bit. He didnt just get dropped, he got sparked out, that doesnt happen to fighters with great chins.
-
Re: Was lennox lewis power overrated?.
If Lewis had been more willing to stand and trade and have a war i dare say we would have seen his true power, maybe he knew his chin wasnt the best so that prevented him from mixing it more than he wanted to.
his chin was not that bad he got caught by monster shots that would have stopped most, it was his powers of recovery that left a lot to be desired.
his power was not overrated at all it is his over cautious approach that makes people question him

Agreed 100%...Lennox preferred to box but when he wantwed the power he had it without question. If you ever look back on his career Lennox was always a boxer but he had a mean streak in him...EG-Rahman 2 after Hasim talked BS,,Tyson,,I could name others but those are prime examples....Lennox hurt both fighters and IMO could have ended both earlier if he so chose

Re: Was lennox lewis power overrated?.
LL didn't seem to have truly explosive power, more of a consistent pop to his punches. I'm not saying he couldn't put some stank on it when he wanted, but he usually relied more on accumulated damage than one big shot.
There are obvious exceptions, of course ;)

He got floored twice and couldn't continue. Not to mention the fact that he has also been stunned on several occasions (Briggs, Klitschko). Fighters with iron chins don't ask "what happened" after they get floored and couldn't get back up (see: Rahman-Lewis 1).

Re: Was lennox lewis power overrated?.
Lennox Lewis early on had the mindset set on destroying his opponent. Excellent power,
Steward in my opinion took away from Lennox's true potential.. He could have been one of the most exciting heavyweights ever . JMO. The safety first fighting style he employed was boring as all hell !
Lewis had excellent power , when he pressed no question O0

Spot on bilbo Lewis had a patient boxing style so he didnt throw KO punches every shot like a slugger , Lewis fought alot of his fights in the top ten so 32 ko is good return for your power for me :)

Clearly, the beating Ruddock took from Lewis made him say dumb things like that ::**

Yeah but whenever ANY fighter fought Tyson they were never the same again and if they worked hard enough to beat him he did enough damage to them that they still never performed the same way ever again :)

Re: Was lennox lewis power overrated?.
Holyfield didn't look too damaged when he was beatin' the sh!t out of Michael Moorer.

You should do your homework and watch the fight between him and Ray Mercer. Lewis took a beating in that fight and his face was all messed up at the end. I thought Mercer clearly won the fight, but Lewis showed that he could take a good punch. As for his power: ask Vitali when he was hanging on for dear life after Lewis caught him with a monster uppercut. There are VERY FEW that would have still been standing after that punch.

Re: Was lennox lewis power overrated?.
Evander was hurt by Lewis. He seemed to beat Morrison down pretty easily. I haven't seen the Jackson fight, and I know Tyson got KTFO by the right hand. In the Mercer fight I agree that Lewis' face was a little swollen, but not all that bad. I had Lewis beating Mercer, maybe you are just anti-Lewis.

Don't be silly. I have the fight on DVD and watched it many times. Mercer won that fight. I think that Lewis was a great champion, but he reached his prime late.

I think Mercer won that fight also.. Mercer was up buy several rounds. but in my opinion Lewis was never better then when he beat Donovan Ruddock.. Lewis weighed in at 227 at 6"5 .. He we was in great shape, excellent hands speed, good leverage on his shots.. he fought with determination and fire at that point. After that he put on all that weight which just cemented him into the ground and slowed him substantially. Lennox was never the same fighter after that. He would have been a fire cracker had he stayed trim .

he was a great puncher. His KO ratio speaks for itself

I agev that fight to Lewis . It was a close fight but Mercer plodded for too long . Lewis was able to get off with combos and when he was in the trenches , he beat Mercer at his own game

Re: Was lennox lewis power overrated?.
Lewis had a lot of power in that right hand. I think at the end of his career (just an personal opinion) he was showing an increasing confidence that made him more destructive when he landed that straight right.
