Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
Heavyweight has alway's been the most popular with the general public but when it comes down to a combination of skills and size is there any better division in history than WW. Give me your opinions. So many great fighters have come through the division.

Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
You could make a million arguments for HW, WW and MW as the best division ever, and none of them would be wrong.

Yea basically... Especially with the amount of great fighters who moved up from welter to Mw, or all the way from MW up to HW eventually..

Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
the fighters of welterweight have attributes of both the heavier weight classes and lower weight classes. Power and punches in volume.

CC, that's exactly where I was getting, perfect point. You can't beat the combination.

Actually, the concensus is that MW's are where HW power meets LW speed. Welter is a speedier, more tactical division. It's where pure boxers ply thier trade.

Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
Welterweight was always known as the champagne division because it was the weight of the average man in the street .

147 hasn't been the weight of the average man on the street since 1846, and I don't even think they had "streets" back then.

Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
Fighting weight after the second world war .
That was the most heavily populated division, clever dick .
-
Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
Oscar De La Hoya
Felix Trinidad
Pernell Whitaker
Shane Mosley
Roberto Duran
Tommy Hearns
Sugar Ray Leonard
Sugar Ray Robinson
just to name a few. There were many more, sure some of them competed in other divisions but no other class had more people walk through than 147

Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
I think Super Featherweight is a GREAT div. too, can go toe to toe with the rest.
-
Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
i think thats a pretty fair/safe thing to say cuz most of the legends started or reached their prime while in 147. with that weight class we had alot of brutal wars, lots of speed, and power what more can a fight fan ask for? generally speaking the higher the weight class u go up the less speed, action/drama. so yeah id concurrrrrrrrrr

Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
Heavyweight will always be the best division

Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
I think so, Welterweight is one of the more consistent division. good power , hand speed, skills, stamina.. all the things needed to put on a great show.
The HW Division was very exciting in the past . However the last 6 - 7 years have been boring as all Fuck . Today HW’s are coming into the sport late with very limited skills . Few today have the skills or background to keep a good sustained offense going , which is needed in any division to keep interest. The Few who have skills avoid each other like the plague. O0

Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
i think over history its a toss up between welter and middle
but we all love two heavyweight bangers in there throwing haymakers lol

Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
The highest grosing fight was at the Heavyweight division
The highest grossing non-HW fight was at the welterweight division
This sais alot about both divisions. However I do agree that the welterweight has bin a huge division throughout hisory. And it has rarely cooled down especially since the late 70s with the great legends of Benitez, Duran, Leaonard, Hearns. Then to the 90s with Whitaker, DLH, Trinidad. Now it's Mously, PBF(I expect he will move back down after the DLH fight), Cotto, Williams and Margarito among others. This is certenly a great time for welterweights, it is by far the hottest division right now.

Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
It would be the hottest division, if any of those guys would actually fight each other.

I was really hoping to get more responses out of you bloody SOB's. All these members and very few of you can put up a good arguement.

Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
Welterweight certainly is always the most competitive. I perfer the weights in this order-
Top tier-
heavyweight- The king of boxing. I'll take 9 rounds of hugging for that awesome knockout
Middle weight- great history, fighters possess power, speed and stamina
Welterweight- Alway filled with great fighters
Middle tier-
Light heavyweight-recently it has not been bad
Lightweight- Usually filled with great fighters, like welterweight, only it lacks the welterweight punching power
Featherweight-Only because we are now in the golden era of the featherweights
Bottom Tier-
Crusierweight- this division is filled with fat light heavyweights. Needs to build a longer history to be considered more seriously
Flyweight- Just too small. I dont want to watch guys fight, where it looks like the ref can take them both at the same time.
Strawweight- I cant believe that there are actually people this small.

I can't say as I agree with your ranlings, but I definitely agree with your logic. And at 6'3", 225 pounds, I can't believe that someone half of my size would want to fight for a living either. CC for you.
-
Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
It's easily been the welterweight division.
Leonard, Robinson, Hearns, Floyd, Mosley, Oscar, Quartey, Trinidad, Fullmer, Whitaker, Duran, and so many more.

ITs the size of the fight in the dog not the dog in the fight .
Im not surprised your obsessed with size, BB.

Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
Yes, I think welterweight is the best division in the sport.
It's the perfect weight for the combination of both speed and power.
Also, it's the crossroads division that most great fighters pass thru.
On one hand, you have the great lightweights who move up to welterweight for a greater challenge. Fighters like Armstrong, Duran, Whitaker, Mosley, Mayweather, De La Hoya, among others.
Then you have the slightly bigger fighters who start their careers at 147 before moving up to other divisions. Leonard, Robinson, Hearns, Trinidad, etc.
-
Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
I am not sure if Welterweight is the best division since they are all good if good fighters are there. The worst division is heavyweight. Either you have lazy fat guys who fight well one fight and then unmotivate themselves because of being undisiplined by not having to make weight. Heavyweight now should have a Superheavyweight division because the Kliichkos have too big and advantage. The size will not save them everytime, but it can make a difference most of the time. I think as for eras, the welterweights of the early 80s were the best era in my mind.. one of them anyway. Leonard, Hearns, Benitez,Duran, Cueves. 5 Hall of fame fighters at the same time. Interestingly Duran and Hearns fought them all. Hearns records vs. the 5 was 3-1-1 (2) And Duran's record was 2-3 (1)

Welterweight is the toughest division to be in. That is what my coaches have always told me because I fought as a superlightweight, jr welterweight and welterweight in the amateurs. But i mean even from a boxing fan's point of view, which division can u name that has more stars in it at one time or another in their careers; off the top of my head...
pernell whitaker
roberto duran
carlos palomino
sugar ray leonard
sugar ray robinson
hammerin hank armstrong
felix trinidad
oscar delahoya
pipino cuevas
wilfredo benitez
the hitman tommy hearns
ricky hatton
kermit cintron
meldrick taylor
floyd mayweather junior
shane mosley
carmen basilio
mickey walker
ike quartey
miguel cotto
antonio margarito
zab judah
simon brown
vernon forrest
cory spinks
this division just has a huge amount of great fighters in it as well as a lot of good ones. I think it is probably the division with the most talented fighters throughout history.

Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
heavyweights are the kings--when boxing comes 2 mind the hw division is usually first thought--hw seems 2 attract the most attention. well as of right now the hw division is prob the weakest ever in boxing history. but the best division is just a matter of opinion
-
Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
Yes, in fact from 135 to 160lb Lightweight to Middle you will find most of History's greatest fighters.
-
Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
I always thought people see the heavyweights and get more one sided fights, but the discipline in the lower weights are incredible. For Leonard, Hearns, Duran and Benitez and all those guys to make welterweight what it was in the 80s was incredible. They brought the attention to the little guys more than anyone since Robinson in the 40s and Armstrong in the 30s

Re: Is Welterwieght the best weight class in boxing history?
The welterweight division has been the most constant division in boxing history...There has rarely been a lull in quality fighters...IMO the division has had more P4P fighters than any other division
