Calzaghe Blasts Back At Manfredo
http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=10367&more=1
Contender runner-up Manfredo also branded Calzaghe a slapper, questioned whether he was a legend and said his reign as a world champion would be ended in front of his own fans in a fortnight's time.
" It doesn't fire me up or anything like that, just makes me laugh really. The facts speak for themselves. I've been a world champion for nearly 10 years and this is my 20th defence.
" Like everyone else who has come into the ring thinking they are going to beat me, Manfredo will go home defeated. I'm going to knock him out and then I'm going after Jermain Taylor and Bernard Hopkins.
" I've knocked out 31 opponents, which isn't bad for a slapper, and on April 7 Manfredo will be number 32."
Re: Calzaghe Blasts Back At Manfredo
I still cant believe this pathetic bout is going head still.
I dont think i'll bother watching it either :P
Re: Calzaghe Blasts Back At Manfredo
This isn't as bad as Calzaghes first response/words for Manfredo... Talking about how there was such a world of difference between a world champ and a TV show contestant, as if he had forgotten that he actually signed to fight this farce of a contender.. CAn't see why he has much to say at all though.. Everyone knows this fight is a joke, and the joke is on Calzaghe for taking it.

I agree although if he fights B Hop or JT next,I'd be willing to overlook this fight!

Well sure, if he fights TAylor, Hopkins Wright winner, Kessler(or Andrade)... I don't know If I'd say I'd overlook this, or his last fight... Otherwise why not just overlook his whole career with the exception of 3 fights.. Fact is he has said he doesn't plan on fighting on too much longer... So no matter if he get's a good opponent next, his record/legacy could have been better. I can't understand how he hasn't expressed interest in fighting Kessler... Chickenshit move, if you ask me.

True but I mean,if he did fight and beat JT/B Hop,then I think people would not criticise him fighting Manfredo and Bika as much although obviously he deserves some criticism And I agree, his career could have been much much better but its too late for him to worry about that now,he needs to make the most of the time he has left.
And although I agree that he should fight Kessler,I think he's making a business move(you as a Mayweather fan should know all about this ;D ;) ) Why fight Kessler in his backyard(or anyone else for that matter) for little money and recognition? How many fans outside us hardcore know about Kessler? I personally think the Kessler fight would be awesome but for little $$$,at this stage in his career,I can see why JC does not want to take that fight.(although Im not advocating his decision,he DOES come across as a bit of a pussy)
I'd like to see what happens if Kessler wins big against Andrade and gets a deal with HBO!!
Re: Calzaghe Blasts Back At Manfredo
The Calzaghe vs Manfredo is'nt the best fight in the world but it has us all talking about it and Joe has fought worse fighters than Manfredo

Ok, your little Mayweather fan dig is understood and all, but it's not quite the same... Floyd has got big fights in his career.. Whether people thought he was fighting the top challenger or not, he still has had his share of big fights and paydays.. And I don't remember a time when Floyd reigned one division for a signifigant period of time, when all the while there was another fighter there who held 2 or more belts... I mean it's just such a no brainer in this case.. Calzaghe has the WBO and IBF titles, and Kessler the WBC and WBA... What on earth justifies this match not happening... How often do you have 2 guys who legitimately claim 2 titles in the same division and are in their primes.. As much as you can imply that Mayweather has made business moves and not bothered with unifying... He's ultimately got what he's after, hasn't he?? This fight with DLH, as far as Floyd is concerned, is his life goal.. He has a chance to beat the most popular fighter in boxing, for by far his highest payday, and at the same time put himself into position to break that man's record for titles held in different weight divisions..... Calzaghe has been a super middleweight his whole career... His claim to fame is(or shoud be), dominating that division and being one of the best all time to grace it.. There's no way you can give me a reason why he hasn't fought Kessler... Like you admit, Bika and Manfredo were both basically non events... And he's had the last year+ to try and work something out with Kessler instead of wasting time. Not to mention, that had he fought Kessler and made himself the man at SMW already, he would be in a much better position to get a fight with Taylor or Hopkins, and to ensure he gets a nice cut of the purse. With Mayweather, he arguably(I should capitalize and bold this ;D) took a couple fights for the money instead of the biggest challenge... Calzaghe has denied himself both by not fighting Kessler. His whole career, he has supposedly had so much trouble finding name opponents to fight.. Now when he has a chance to really build on the momentum he has gained, he would rather retain only his very loyal fanbase(which he has always had), and take easy fights.

No the joke is that during the initial press conference's Calzaghe spoke about the fight like it was legit and called Manfredo a tough and worthy opponent...Then once the criticism started pouring in then Calzaghe acts as though the fight was forced on him....This again proves my theroy about Calzaghe being a paper champion and the Lacey fight being the highlight of his pathetic career
The sad part of it all is Calzaghe is the longest reigning SM weight champion...I believe the sports longest reigning champion? has a perferct record and has the skill to be so much more and fight so much better opposition with the same success....Instead he is happy fighting guy's like Manfredo who are practically gimme defenses....It is more of a disgrace to the title and the word champion then anything..........
Just my opp but then again I will openly admit I do not like Joe Calzaghe as a fighter so I am a bit harsh on things when it comes to his career choices
Re: Calzaghe Blasts Back At Manfredo
i am a joe calzaghe fan, but i do believe he can't call himself the best unless he has fought the best. That goes for any of my favourite fighters.
Re: Calzaghe Blasts Back At Manfredo
joe.c needs to fight kessler, shut the fxxx up joe and step up and fight who you really need to fight....and thats kessler.
if his so good why waste his time with bika and manfredo, kessler is who he should be fighting.
joe.c is pamper i'm tired of these undefeated pampered paper champions. his biggest highlight of his career that shot his career to stardum was a win over overhype lacy.
and his 31 knock win are all against b...u...m
19 defence against b...u...m
Re: Calzaghe Blasts Back At Manfredo
well hopefully this will be the last of the mediocre opponents for joe. he doesnt have a huge amount of fights left in his career and should focus on fighting the best; ie, Kessler, Taylor, Hopkins, Wright (or the winner of their bout, really), maybe even try to get a fight against Roy Jones who may be at the end of his rope but I think would still make an entertaining fight. Kessler is probably the youngest, strongest and most aggressive and probably would make for the smallest purse of the names mentioned above so I doubt we see him and Calzaghe ever square off; if they do, it will be after other names are out of the way or if Kessler was to suddenly make a really really big splash and have a popularity surge. Either way this April bout should be a walk in the park for Calzaghe. When i first saw the commercials for the Contender, i wondered to myself if they would ever have the contestants fight a real world champion. That alone makes it entertaining enough for me to watch, regardless of the fact that Manfredo more thank likely is in for some serious trouble. Joe Calzaghe by late round stoppage.
Re: Calzaghe Blasts Back At Manfredo
CC for the points P4P,well stated ESPECIALLY PBF,at times in his career, taking fight for $$$ rather than legacy ;D ;)
I really cannot see why JC won't fight Kess now,Kess following must have grown over night, and as you said if they were to fight, that would be 4 titles on the line!!!!After the Spinks fight,Taylor has to fight Pavlik or Pantera, who knows what B Hop will do presuming he beats Winky(a big IF) and that would leave Kess and JC!!

Not to be a pill but thinking about it, Calzaghe really has never stopped a top quality fighter.

Lacy was quality. Joe could have stopped him if he had wanted to. I think he wanted to put a punishing hurt on him for as long as possible and give him a boxing lesson. But yeah, you are pretty much right. Didn't he KO Chris Eubanks a ways back though?

The truth is pretty much always boring
