CALZAGHE v KESSLER Headlines the planets most wanted fights.
Gotta agree that it's a tasty matchup that i think Joe would get seriously up for and win (I still think with the fitness levels he keeps there are still maybe 2 more Lacy fights left in him).
Watching the ABA's on Grandstand on saturday and Steve Bunce saying more or less what we're all thinking....
The Manfredo fight is set up to be a winnable fight against a big name and like it or not Manfredo is big Worldwide purely on the ratings success of 'Contender' both here and Abroad, and the Bika fight did him (Joe) no favours ratings and he fought like a twat at times and i think it all got to him mentally a little.
Then it'll be a mega money night with Hopkins or Taylor i would think.
Can't blame him really as he ain't as flush as people think moneywise,we can afford him that surely (his record speaks for itself) as long as he dives in with Kessler for the Showdown next time!!

Re: CALZAGHE v KESSLER Headlines the planets most wanted fights.
The only reason I will be following Calzaghe v. Manfredo is that I'm hoping for an upset.
Calzaghe HAS to fight Kessler after this, slowly Kessler is taking over Calzaghe's spot as
the man at 168.

Re: CALZAGHE v KESSLER Headlines the planets most wanted fights.
Joe Dosent want big fights :-\ regardless of what his camp says...... He should have fought Kessler right after Lacy then he wouldnt have so much uncertainty surrounding him.. Manfredo aint shite and the people who are Manfredo groupies from the contender are armchair boxing fans... Is this the crowd that Calzaghe is trying to attract here in the states??? Or does he want to attract purists like us that know Manfredo is a turd and this fight is a sham and an easy way for him to get the coveted 20 defenses... And believe me the if this fight is a PPV the contender fans arent shelling out $29-$49 to see him get beat from pillar to post, but I will ;D
Seriously though Joe is as great of a talent as we have seen in the past 25 years but he seems to be more than content about championing mediocrity, you cant make a living off of 1 fight and call yourself great.. Its a shame Joe could be making spectacular fights showcasing his talents, but sadly it wont happen...... Seems like every fight is a tuneup for a big fight that never gets made.... Even the most staunch Calzaghe has to be dissapointed in his last couple choices for opponents...

OK..... Let's get 1 thing straight Manfredo is known World Wide due to the show. Hes recognized as the guy who lost but got brought back (Only to looose again)
Manfredo is by any means POPULAR world wide, he is know from the show....
Manfredo is ONLY popular in his hometown of Rhode Island....
Thats a fact.....
Same thig applies for even Sergio Mora hes known world wide and he MIGHT have some popiularity around the globe CAUSE he won the tournament but by nay means does that make him the right fight for any champ.
(Thank god Taylor-Mora didn't come off)

Kessler was injured right after the Lacy fight !!! He was at the Lacy fight with an injured wrist and then got easy money for his knockover job against Beyer
Unfortunately hardcore fightfans are few and far between , Kessler is still an unknown and needs to be built up the fight aint worth what it might be in a year or so whilst the hardcore might long to see it truth is Ecomomics dictate .
Id still back Joe

Dissapointed...Im absolutely LIVID.
Hate the route he's taking to be honest.

Re: CALZAGHE v KESSLER Headlines the planets most wanted fights.
Well I wont be greedy, but like you said if he has at least one of the Lacy performances left I would like to see it against someone that was worldclass and deserving.... I dont think a 41 year old Hopkins  or The undisputed World Middleweight champion that defends his crown and fights Junior Middleweights is the answer either..
He needs to legitimize his foothold in the Supermiddle division. There are a few legitimate threats out there for him to sink his teeth into

Your missing the point though ;)
Ask the average Man and he'll have heard of Manfredo over Kessler all day long (like i said purely from a tv show that was a hit across the world)
There's method behind the madness of fighting Manfredo trust me :)

By that logic Calzaghe should fight Jack Bauer ('24') then.
It has been a long time since Manfredo has been on the contender YEARS.
Calzaghe WILL NOT gain any new fans from fighting Manfredo.
It's not as if people are going to say 'OH SHIT MANFREDO' well
damn I'm gonna watch then!!.
NO NEW FANS WILL COME OUT OF THIS, which nullifies the point of fighting
him.
Something that would be more attractive for the general public would be
a Super Middleweight unification bout on HBO.
#1 vs #2 Super Middleweights according to just about every poll, website and
sanctioning body. Rather than Calzaghe against that guy that didn't win the contender.

wasn't that what Bika was for? Joe is almost done with his career. If you assume (as I do)
that Taylor and Hopkins would find it pointless to fight him, then what is left for him to do?
Beat up heavy underdogs? I don't want to pay for that, even if you beats them up really bad.

Re: CALZAGHE v KESSLER Headlines the planets most wanted fights.
Is that why you watch Joe Calzaghe or any fighter to see somebody get beaten up ?
Then your not a boxing fan .

Re: CALZAGHE v KESSLER Headlines the planets most wanted fights.
Getting back on track....
Does anyone think Mikkel v Joe will ever happen?
Kessler and Froch are slowly backing him into a corner with their respective O's.
Will Calzaghe move up a weight?
-
Re: CALZAGHE v KESSLER Headlines the planets most wanted fights.
I think Froch fights Kessler, Calzaghe fights Taylor and convinces himself (or has Frank do it for him) that it is the biggest fight the world has ever seen.
-
Re: CALZAGHE v KESSLER Headlines the planets most wanted fights.
I think Kessler v Froch will happen sooner than Kessler v Calzaghe too ;)

Agreed, I don't think Calzaghe's handlers want anything to do with Kessler, for whatever reason.
Could be lack of popularity, could be they think he has a chance of losing, but for whatever the reason, I seriously can't see it happening in the near future.
In the meantime, Kessler would do best for himself going after the undefeated Super Middles one at a time
Froch, Bute, Inkin, Mendy, Hanshaw, Pascal.

Re: CALZAGHE v KESSLER Headlines the planets most wanted fights.
Kesslers mob (Mogens Palle) and Calzaghes mob (FW) have been in talks to make the fight for the past couple of years. One of the biggest blockers is obviously the HOME ADVANTAGE both want...
The BIGGER the fight gets, the more MONEY involved, the more chance of it happening. Especially with them BOTH now fighting on HBO!!!

You are probably right, I guess the only way to solve this is to have the fight in sunny Arizona!!
Neutral ground and within driving distance for me, CutmeMick and Violent Demise!!

After making his last offer for a fight in Denmark, Palle directly and repeatedly ASKED Warren to make them an offer for a UK fight. He did so both directly (Palle's claim), on his own web-site and through the press (the later two are verifiable).
Warren refused to make ANY such offer - Not even a poor one (probably knew Palle would go public with any offer considered ridiculously small - and let the public decide whether they found it fair - so better to just not make any).
All this talk that Kessler won't fight away from home is being fabricated by the Calzaghe camp/fans. What Palle has NOT done is make an offer for a UK fight - but that's hardly surpricing since promoting fights in the UK is not his business - but Warren's.
Palle's standpoint is, if Warren wants a UK fight, Warren's gotta make an offer - and since there's been no offer, he concludes that Warren doesn't wan't the fight under any circumstance.
I'm not saying Palle is an easy man to deal with. He's not gonna bend over backwards to accomodate Warren's every wish. Being WBA/WBC unified champ it's not like Kessler isn't bringing anything to the table. Kessler knows taking on Calzaghe (especially in the UK) is a big risk. He's obviously not gonna do it for nothing. With this latest HBO appearence he's also BEGINNING to make a name for himself in the US. In fact by now i doubt all that many americans cares a whole lot more about Calzaghe than they do about Kessler.
So what i'd like to know, is how much exactly would Warren be prepared to offer Kessler for a UK fight (and under what terms). So far the answer appears to be a big round zero - probably with the added bonus that Warren would want options for the next hundred Kessler fights, should Mikkel win.
With HBO working for the fight, the odds of it ever being made has gone up a bit. - from about 2% likelyhood to about 4% likelyhood in my opinion.
In other words - IT'S NOT GONNA HAPPEN.

I see where your coming from with this BUT if we've managed to get Duran-SRL, Gomez-Sanchez, Lewis-Tyson, ODLH-Tito we can most def. get Kess-Joe......
And think ODLH-Tito came off from King & Arum...
If the fight doesn't happen in the end us the fans get the short end of stick..

I honestly do think it will happen; is aid in another thread calzaghe will take kessler next if he can't get taylor or the winner of hopkins v wright.
Really looking at this outside of the box, untill calzaghe actualy opted to fight manfredo rather than kessler kessler was just another unproven european fighter; honestly if calzaghe had taken kessler after lacy or bika right away without any fuss and won, pretty much everyone outside of denmark who was a big calzaghe fan would of branded Kessler another unproven european over hyped wanna be, in short another mario Viet - Looked what happend to lacy after calzaghe was done with him! kessler would of gotten more stick had calzaghe beaten him then!
Kessler put on one hell of a show last weekend, and now there is no reason why he should not be one of the top 3 names calzaghe should fight next - i still would prefer taylor in the sense alot have him ranked at #4 P4P beat hopkins twice and is a big big name in the states, a chance for calzaghe to headline a major Us fight in the states killing 2 birds with one stone!
I do think tho, that calzaghe v kessler would be the biggest fight at SMW since RJJ and toney - they don't have the following world wide like thos 2 did, but for the hardcore fans this could be as a big if not nbigger in temrs of the outcome than the jones jr v toney fight.

Re: CALZAGHE v KESSLER Headlines the planets most wanted fights.
it would be a crime for this fight to never happen. both undefeated, both holding 2 titles (dont think joe's relinquishing the IBF strap now). should have already happened and i always read about kessler mentioning calzaghe but hardly hear anything coming from joe regarding kessler. either he is not on his radar or he doesnt want to know. i would still put money on JC.

Joe already HAS relinquished the IBF strap. He did so, to make the great Manfredo fight possible. The window of oppertunity for a 4 belt unification is gone for now.
But Kessler-Calzaghe would still be the closests the division has ever come to complete unification and having an undisputed champ.

like it or not calzaghe is the ring champion and the undisputed champion, thats what the ring belt means. there neevr was a window to get all 4 abc betls on one champion, kessler would of have to dropped the wbc had he faced calzaghe,a nd the ibf would of still stripped calzaghe of the IBF belt - also if kessler gets stripped of the wbc i *think* am not certain he losses the WBA super champion status also - leaving him beltless.

No the ring belt does NOT mean undisputed. The ring is helt in higher regard than the alphabet titles by most. But it's not without flaws. Especially in the case of Calzaghe, where it was awarded prematurely without Calzaghe fighting the no 2 ranked and whgere Calzaghe seems contend to rest on his laurels with the Ring pretty much powerless to force anything.
Undisputed means having no credible rival. That is clearly not the case here.
If in fact Calzaghe believes he has no credible rival, he should have no problem taking on Kessler, finishing him off and walk away with his belts without breaking sweat. Even if it's not a big earner i could at least be as good (also financially) as most of the other opponents we've seen (and continues to see) Joe fight.
Just wanna add.
How can you even remotely consider calling Calzaghe undisputed when numerous polls across the various forums suggest a 50-50 split, regarding who ppl would favour to win. When an increasing number of boxing observers and writers either have them dead even or in many cases are starting to have Kessler ahead of Calzaghe?
I may be biased - but that's just ridiculous.

Most fans don't seem to understand the "fight" that takes place before THE fight. And the EGOS involved.

Well there is no doubt that Kessler is trying to meet Calzaghe. I had the change to chat with Kessler after the Andrade fight. I asked why they kept chasing Calzaghe when the managers cant agree about a fight. Kessler said he didn´t mind going to Wales to fight as long the money where right. How much that is I don't know, but he is determent to get it on with Calzaghe, even in Cardiff.
He also hoped that HBO would put the pressure on Calzaghe in order to make the fight, I don't know if HBO have the power to do just that ::**.
But anyway they do plan that Kessler next time should fight in US against a top ranked American fighter. They dream of B Hop. that would be funny if they stole Calzaghe opponent ;D
I believe he instead should pay Mundine a visit downunder. Pretty sure there would be a great deal of money in that 8) and I like to see that fight. Mundine have evolved since the last visit. But again there are plenty of 0 to go in the SMW just now, maybe Kessler should take all the 0´s on one by one O0
