Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
This weeks FNF will be featuring Women's boxing as the main event. I for one am not very excited about it. I'm fine with Women boxing, some of them, not many, but some are actually not half bad at it either. Mostly though I just wanna see Laila Ali fight Anne Wolfe and thats about it. I think its BS that Women's boxing is the main event on FNF this week, and a waste of time. How bout you all?
-
Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
Well I wouldn't call it a BS nor a waste of time. I mean this is one of the best women fighters in the world fighting? She's undefeated I know that. Not a waste of time, I mean it's not fair for the sport not to get any exposure.
Me personally, I don't watch woman's boxing. I'm not morally opposed to it and I'm a fan of women's basketball and women's lacrosse, but something about boxing and women don't mix right for me for whatever reason. So I just don't watch it. Only seen one women fight, it was a live fight and what was I supposed to do? The fight was between Danielle Christiansen and Laura Roland. Christiansen was the hometown fighter and pumped while Roland was just overmatched. She ended up battered against the ropes and it was fairly depressing knowing she is probably a sister or daughter to someone. Just not my cup of tea but I've certainly got no gripes with it getting airtime.
Joel Julio fights on this undercard. Should spark his guy out soon enough and I like Julio I think he's a dynamite fighter so I'll tune in for that and probably ditch the main event.

CC. I'll probably do the same after I get home from work, I'll DVR it and watch the Julio fight, maybe see what Laila has to say and thats about it. Joel Julio still has potential, it was embarassing for him losing to Quintana, not that Quintana is bad, we just see now that he's not ALL THAT like some people thought.

Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
It's getting better...problem is that they don't focus enough on the ones that can actually fight but the ones who generate cash....
EG-Leila Ali can't fight for beans...but her name is a draw and they give her the most horrible opp out there...Yet Ann Wolf can fight but does not get half the attention....
Christy Martin was the most unskilled thing going and bled like a stuck pig if her nose was tapped....but she got all the attention
Yet at the same time Lucia Rijker was fighting and her coverage was minimal....Lucia had great skills and could hit and take a shot...
a little more focus on the ones that have actual skills and a little less on who is cute then the division would be fun to watch
-
Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
Dont like it.
When its on tv I dont watch it.
Just does not seem right.
-
Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
I dont mind it as long as they have some skills. The largest problem is that there is not enough women fighters out there for quality fights all of the time. Unlike with men you can still see some no names on TV or local club that have some skills inside of the ring. With the women the skillfull ones are few and far between. I think that if they reduced the number of weight classes to the original eight then this might give us more opportunities to much up the quality fighters with each other.

I'll watch woman's boxing a match at a time. It's hard for me to stomach two or three in a row. I do not feel it is a disgrace to the sport or anything but it puts a damper on my fun during weekends like this when there are no Saturday fights to enjoy...
-
Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
I'll watch women's boxing, Anne Wolfe taking out the 6' chick was impressive. But I definately don't follow who the players are and who's hot and not (skill-wise). If no other fights are on, I'll watch.
-
Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
But I definately don't follow who the players are and who's hot and not (skill-wise). Killersheep
Right. That's a factor for me also.

Gina....I am trying to remember where I seen her fight....Was it World Combat Leauge??...I know she was pretty tough and skilled...Not all over the place hoping to land something...She dominated the other girl something fierce

Showtimes debut of EliteXC she fought on that card....
Why would a women that looks like that wan't to fight?
-
Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
Elite XC is where that girl in Red fights I think.
And I watch Womens boxing wherever its on.
Boxing is like love, it's not straight nor gay nor male nor female.
So I don't descriminate anything when it comes to boxing. I grew up watching Tyson fights and that girl Coalminers daughter was always on it knocking fools out, she was my favorite boxer(besides Tyson) I was really young but I liked watching Martin fight(although I had no idea her name was Christy Martin, she was "the daughter's fighter" to me ;D Cause i fully couldnt comprehend her nickname ;D

Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
Wolfe-Ali should happen. Period. It shoud have already happened actually. Laila Ali just recently fought some green girl that she already disposed of and kod her again. A pointless mismath. Laila might as well call it a career if that is the kind of note she wants to go out on.
-
Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
I don't think there is any reason they can't box, but I just don't like it. Where some of them may lack the skills, they sure do have heart and have put a lot more into their fights than some of the fights between guys.
But for me personally I don't like seeing women punch each other in the face. I don't want to come across as sexist but there are differences between men and women. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. I did some mixed group training once and a girl was holding up the focus mits. Unfortunately she wasn't holding them properly and when I jabbed one (lightly!!) it kicked back and hit her in the face. I felt like sh*t for the whole weekend. Almost as bad as when a girl was sparring with me and sprained he wrist while hitting me when I covered up. Definetly a loose-loose situation.
-
Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
Its not like they are fighting guys. I am all for it, I think there are some good women fighters out there. Most arent very developed skill wise, its almost like watching the amateurs for men. But every once in awhile you get a girl that knows what she is doing and it is fun to watch her dismantle the unskilled opponent. I have yet to see a good war between women fighters, hopefully with some exposure and guidance, we will see some good "girl" fights in the future.
-
Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
Certainly not me. I don't follow any womens league in any sport, to be honest.. Never saw much of a point in watching physically far inferior athletes compete for far lower stakes.. Not trying to offend anyone, just my view.

CC Thats where it was .....I know it was not to long ago....Yes she has some skill...They were showing her work out with her boyfriend...From what he was saying she is pretty strong and can give a good sparring match..
I have no problem with womens boxing or MMA as long as they can fight....

Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
Its the main event ???
Can't get into it really, for the most part, maybe excluding Ann Wolfe, there just not explosive enough . Just doesn't interest me.
-
Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
Watched 1 round, womens boxing is very offensive oriented...somehow I dont like seeing them girls hit each other.

I feel a similar way about flyweight boxers 8)

Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
I'm not the biggest fan of women's boxing, but watch it from time to time...
But right now I'm totally crazy about it because of a girl called Susianna Kentikian aka KillerQueen...
http://www.boxrec.com/boxer_display.php?boxer_id=292211
She got a better ko(tko, yeah I know but still...) ratio than most men in this weight class...
Really amazing to watch...

Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
Womens boxing is cool.... but I really don't enjoy watching it. If women want to box then fine, but I don't want to see it. EVER. If I want to watch women I'll watch something else. If a woman's boxing match was a good fight then I'll enjoy it like any other fight, but women's boxing, looks like women fighting. It's often hard enough getting a decent boxing fight with men.
-
Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
Well if those 2 rounds didn't excite you period regardless if they are women then theres something wrong with you...
Damn! Mary Jo can throw some serious leather....
-
Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
Why is Mary Jo fighting that short ugly guy with purple hair, is this a mixed boxing match?
-
Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
I am a small female fighter and to be honest I have to admit a lot of female fighters are not technically brilliant - but that goes along with the number of fights they've had. There are fewer female fighter than male so getting up a decent amount of fighting experience can take some time.
I don't know if this goes for everyone but sometimes you can demonstrate a certain of skill in sparring and in your club but you still need practice in a competition situation to know how to put your best on display. It's too easy to get psyched out by the fact a whole heap of strangers are watching you. Beginner blokes can look awful too.
Also I like watching smaller fighters coz they're fast and they are explosive when they know what they are doing. I have less interest in watching any overweight super heavy attempt to heave his fat rolls round the ring throwing a pretty small number of punches to KO another seriously overweight, less fit guy.
Many guys don't like watching girls fight and that's fine. However, there is a market for it though so the very occasional time it happens it probably happens because it makes economic sense for the promoters. The money they make might partially go towards getting male fighters you would like to watch in for the next big show.
Also guys often forget a lot of women learn a sport like boxing because they want a sport which will also improve their self defence skills. You could go to some Micky Mouse seminar for a few hours but if you get attacked 6 months down the track are you really going to remember anything you were shown or will you just worsen your own situation because you haven't been trained enough for your responses to be automatic and as powerful as they need to be.
A lot of women who have had bad experiences might be terrified to walk down the street and to challenge themselves competitively in a sport like boxing/kickboxing/judo might be what they need to gradually get their confidence back. That's good for you guys especially if you think some are perve worthy otherwise they'd stay holed up in their houses and never venture out to flirt with you!  ;)

;) very nice post, you clearly feel very strongly both about fighting and the fact that you get why men tend to steer away from women's boxing. I think most men finding it out of their comfort zone is their issue (myself included :-[) and I think we have no one else to blame for that other than our own perceptions, or more likely social/moral influences. :coolclick:

Great post Sharla heres :coolclick: #21 on me....
Plus you could probably beat more then half of the guys here in a boxing match..... :o (Including me :-[ )
Did you see the fight?
Wow!! it was a good one and one of the better fights ESPN has had this year..... IMO....
-
Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
Thanks Yoitsdan + Mick,
I know guys like you mean well really and most of the time it's as you say social/ moral influences which make it difficult for you to watch women being hit. It's the same moral influences that serve to protect women in a lot of cases so it's not something I can really complain too much about.
I can see that they way a lot of guys are brought up it's hard to differentiate between the average woman being bashed in what should be a safe situation and two women who have trained to test themselves in the ring against another opponent the same gender knowing full well the risks involved.
I haven't seen the fight yet but I intend to watch it if I get hold of the video off of one of my friends.
And when I say I'm a small fighter I mean very small so thanks for the complement Mick but I think it's important to be realistic about the fact I'm a midget! :)

Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
Womens boxing is a load of crap
I remember Christy Martin making more for fighting a 6 fight novice than THE Great Ricardo Lopez did for defending his title !!! wot a load of crap to sum up lets see boxing promotions in Vagas with only women on the card and see how much interest there is .
Sell out ? i dont think so it is riding on the crest of a wave which is mens boxing end of story.
-
Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
Whenever anything begins it's a load of Crap. Women's boxing has a long way to go and will take many, many, many years to reach a higher level but the same could be said about so many things like for example medicinal science.
You may never benefit from watching a female fight the way you might from taking antibiotics but I'm glad it exists and sorry to tell you this Hindley the world aint just about you!

....BUT NO I DONT LIKE NOR FOLLOW WOMENS BOXING

Thats just my opinion i think its a load of crap as i said and school boy none paid boxers are more skillful ,
i respect your view , this is just my view, period

Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
If it makes you feel any better I don't think female boxers are necessarily paid more than male boxers. A girl in my club went to the worlds (won bronze) and paid her own ticket to get there while all the guys were sponsored because the Australian Institute of Sport only sponsors Olympic sports and while mens boxing is an Olympic sport women's isn't.
Still I think the pay versus skill discrepancy is a boxing wide thing you are annoyed about isn't it? Some guys are paid more than they are worth just as some women might be?
Also some guys here seem to have pretty firm opinions about which female boxers are good and which aren't considering they apparently don't ever watch them :)

I didnt say female boxer were paid more , i said i remember Christy Martin making more than Ricardo Lopez for a fight ! read wot i write , this is a fact not my opinion she really did make more for a fight than a great fighter like Lopez now that is in anybodies book a load of crap!!!

Re: Honestly guys, who really cares about Women's boxing?
OK so if you're just talking about her that's not a reason to be against all women's boxing - or even women's boxing itself but just the management of that particular bout. Or just the lack of the promotion of some of the top guys - that a lot of them deserve more. I agree a world title fighter should get more money and the pay cheque of a fighter should be more closely linked to their level.
