What im trying to say is what type do you prefer
Brawler= Castillo Rocky Benn ect
Defensive= Herol Graham Willie Pep Winky ect
Speed= Sugar Ray Leonard Meldrick Taylor ect
I can't think at moment if i have missed any let me know and ill add them to the poll.
Combination of speed and defense.
There are different kinds of defensive fighters. For example, Hopkins and Wright are both great defensive fighters, but I wouldn't call them speed fighters. Hopkins shows great defense by slowing down the pace and giving opponents different looks. Winky's defense is based on forming a wall with his arms and blocking tons of punches. I respect these guys but I don't find their styles to be that exciting.
I prefer the fast defensive fighters, like Pep/Whitaker/Mayweather.
I do not have a specific favourite type of fighter. I love watching Mayweather because of his beautiful fusion of speed and defence,then there is Pernell with his incredible reflexes etc. However I am also a fan of fighters,guys who come to KO you,Tito,offensive whirlwinds like Margarito etc.
I don't limit myself to one style. Boxing means different things to different people,it's not just the art of hitting and not being hit but it also has some gladitorial aspect,2 men fighting with honour,with dignity,showing their strength,physical and mental etc
The perfect example is Pernell v Chavez,what a wonderful display but on the other hand you have a fight like Corrales Castillo 1. Both are wonderful in their own ways. ;D :D

well said smashup.its easier to pick a fighter that defines a style rather than pick the style itself.i would go for calzaghe,for his heart mostly.usually i would go for a frazier style.

You have to adapt to be great they were 2 of the greatest offensive and defensive fighters ever
Basically if i could create my ulimate fighter using 3 boxers....
Defence-Mayweather (defies logic imo)
Speed-Leonard (even in the 15th round he'd use insanely fast flurries)
Brawl-Dempsey (middleweight by todays standards and 9 times out of 10 went straight through the much bigger opponent with absolutely no fear)

I'll add another type of fighter that I like, and that's fighter who throw a lot of jabs.
I'd rather watch a guy who throws tons of jabs than a guy who throws bombs. That's one reason I never really loved watching Roy, because he would leap in with hooks, he didn't jab much.
I always don't like that Mayweather seems to be throwing a few less jabs than he used to. He used to throw a great left jab to the body.
Love watching the old Tommy Hearns fights, he had that long left jab.

Nigel was a Warrior and most dangerous when hurt (Logan fight anyone ;)) whereas Hatton will hold on and Wrestle when hurt.

Sugar Ray against Hearns showed how to adapt and change tact one style wasnt going to beat Hearns but he figured it out .

i like fighters who come to fight... im not the one to root for fighters who are all talent yet all they do is hit and run.. i like fighters who can box and brawl...thats what fighting is all about
I like someone who can do it all, or at least 2 i.e floyd - speed and defense, or Duran, brawler and defense, or Pacquiao, a fast brawler. There are so many more categories, but really, I appreciate most boxers for being masters of what they're strongest at.
yeah i love defensive fighters. i like winky's style of catching puching with his glove but i prefer guys like PBF, byrd and spinks that make you miss with head movent and footwook.Quote:

Got a lot I enjoy. SweetPea hit the nail on the head of defensive fighters who get by on speed and slickness.
Phone booth brawlers who truly know how to cut off the ring, work to the body, stay active and counter with hooks. Rarely does a really good one come along. Chavez knew how to do it. Castillo is a very good one. And Hatton at his best is one of
the tops on the inside.
Then the guys who do nothing wrong. They don't drop their hands after they punch, they don't over extend with their punches, don't cross their feet ect. Carlos Baldomir is one of those guys who does that. Usually they don't have speed, or power so they get by just being solid. They were a lot more common pre 60's which is why you had a ton of text book boxing matches in the 40's.
And it goes without saying, Arce, Gatti, Ward, Freitas who are always in exciting fights.
I tend not to be excited by the guys with all the one punch power as much as others do. Especially since most one punch guys nowadays throw just 1 punch at a time. And there is nothing worse then a boxer who throws 1 punch at a time.

I have to say though, that certain fighters can make certain styles really work for them. Like Gatti and Hatton have a pressing, brawling style that they make work really well for them in exciting fashion.
Another way to look at it is there are many many fighters out there like Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez who are combinations of all three styles you mentioned. Ithink fighters who fall into this category have a distinct advantage over more one dimensional types.
I like the ones that lead with their chin, while their hands at the waist 8)
