Correct me if I'm wrong but I've heard that the term for shin splints actually describes a few different conditions which have similar symptoms. If you have continued problems despite reducing impact you might need to see a specialist to determine what it is rather than copying other people's treatments for conditions they had. A friend of mine decided to skip seeing a specialist and self treat her heel spur and she hasn't improved.

Yeah of course and you're the physio not me - I'm just saying that if it doesn't respond to rest the way you'd expect it's not something you want to self diagnose. I won't pretend to be the expert here - rather just a fool who knows how easy it is to stuff yourself up :)
I remember i used to get shin splints because i would slouch as i ran, focusing my weight to in front me. This ended up putting a big strain on the shin area. I smartened up after a while and stood straight up as I ran which I found to focus my weight on the back of my calves. And just like that no more shin splints.

Anybody with the problem should look at the Pose technique on running. Its atechnique used to stop getting injured while running leaning forward but the secret is not to use the heel for generating power but the lift of the knee not for me but it has its good points its a good way to use gravity without the impact
yelp rest is the key here.. also good shoes for the future . especially if your heavy .. proper shoes are very important to prevent injury, you need the shock absorbance .

stopped running for a year and started again and it took 2 days for them to come back
and i think i def do run wrong so ima work on that cuz u could hear me coming a mile away i run heavy and flat on m feeta and i belee i shift my weight aswell
what about tensor bandaging your shins for support?
The thing about that Von is if you do that you basicaly should not be running
he needs a zero impact treadmill. 8)
I remember reading in a boxing manual which advised to lean forward when running. I found out myself that this causes shin splints.Quote:

Just a thought on the shoes for when you can run again - look for a recreational running club in your area and ask them where most of the runners buy their shoes.
In my city all the runners buy their shoes from one store because:
1) They know their stuff - they can watch you run and look at your old runners to suggest both how to correct your running form and if there is a particular type of shoe which will be best for you. Usually a good specialist store will employ only competitive runners and students studying to be podiatrists and will have a day/time regularly when a podiatrist comes in to help recommend what's best for you - for free.
Since your a big guy and you slap the ground a lot I would guess they'd recommend the Brooks Beast since it offers a lot of support. Ask them if the shoe they recommend is best for it's cushioning or it's softness. Believe it or not in running shoe language they are 2 different things. Softness is what I prefer since when I'm not injured I do a lot of kms and I need to feel protected and I think it's the better option for anyone prone to injury running on the road. Cushioning (found in most Mizuno shoes) is actually meant to let you bounce off the road more and loose less energy to the road but it's less comfy in my opinion. Plus I think the performance benefit is pretty small especially if your shins are not going to like them.
To add a lot of softness and comfort you could also invest in some running socks found at the same specialty runners shoe store. They are a little more expensive than others but generally the good ones last a really long time and are soooo much more comfy. Especially important for any longish runs.
2) They're actually cheaper. Their market is made up of serious runners including those who run 100 plus km a week meaning they must replace their shoes often. They will charge a little LESS than most other places because they want to guarantee return customers.
One other thing to watch when you do run again is the surface. Most people know that grass is softer than the road or street but obviously it's not always convenient. You might not realise that cement is harder than bitumen. If you think about it while you are running you'll feel the difference. Stick to bitumen over cement whenever possible.
Just to make you feel a little better - all of the runners I have ever known to have shin splints have made a complete recovery so I think you will find a way around this  :)
If you can't get to someone who knows what they're talking about 8) Look over these questions.
Lots of people think it's shin splints when it's actually anterior compartment syndrome. Hurts like a mother along the shin but it ain't shin splints.
As Sharla has said going to a proper running shoe store may be able to advise you on the correct shoe for you and the surface you are running on. Also look at runnersworld.com which carries good advice on injuries.

your best bet is to go get yourself checked out buy a physio, i had this problem mine was compartment syndrome and i had major surgery on both legs so go get checked out buddy
