Most disciplined fighter of all time?
When I say this, I mean in AND out of the ring. Someone who NEVER undertrained, never came into a fight out of shape. Someone who kept his nose clean and never let the temptations that come with money and power destroy his career (like guys like Tyson and Ibeabuchi). And in terms of "in ring", guys who weren't fustrated easy, guys who weren't thrown off of their gameplans.
The guy who comes to my mind first is B-hop...
Hopkins as a guy who never balooned up in weight and was always in shape (stayed at the same weight pretty much his whole career). I've never seen him come into a bout unprepared or out of shape. And obviously the guy wouldn't have lasted as long as he did unless he had some serious discipline.
Anyway what do you guys think? I Know there are TONS more that could be listed and made a case for. Marvin Hagler stuck out in my mind as well.

Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
Hagler and Mayweather are in that mould as well.

Lol really never heard of that before.

Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
He's only human. I don't remember him ever coming in out of shape or his fucking of various women effecting his in ring performance.
-
Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
Willie Pep
Evander Holyfield
Marvin Hagler
-
Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
But the most disciplined... Hagler, Hopkins and Mayweather were insanely strict.
-
Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
I'd go with B Hop too. He's always in shape, hasn't even eaten a chocolate bar in 20 years and looks better than most boxers half his age.
-
Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
B-hop is pretty damned hard to argue with, guy lives like a spartan
Norton never disappointed on the conditioning front
-
Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
B-Hop Definately. Oscar is usuallly except vs Sturm. Even though i cant stand him, PBF is very disciplined.
Ali was very disciplined and it didnt hurt that he is Muslim
Calzaghe and SSM deserve mention too
-
Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
Rocky Marciano used to train for 4 months before every fight, and he fought 3 times a year !!!
-
Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
i agree about hopkins.calzaghe definately deserves a metion, made the weight for 20 successful defences.not bad for someone of his natural size.as someone said the other day,he has it down to a fine art

Rocky was another guy that stood out in my mind. Joe Walcott was outboxing him for most of the fight but he never seemed to lose his cool and get wild. I heard that he'd run 10 miles a day, rain or shine, regardless of the weather.

CC BeanFlicker.
B-Hop no doubt. You talk about success story?
If you look up the word Disciplined in the dictionary, you will see a photo of B-Hop.
The man was a statistic. He changed his life around and has kept his nose clean.
He is a great example and role model. You got to love him.
SnaggleTooth is a God amongst men.
Biography
Bernard Hopkins was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, growing up in the Raymond Rosen housing projects and later in Germantown, where he became involved in crime and gang activity at a young age. Today, he describes himself as a "thug" in his youth and regrets that it took a stint in prison for him to turn his life around.
Late in 1982, when Hopkins was in the 11th grade, he was convicted and sentenced to 18 years in the state penitentiary for "strong-arm robbery" (not armed robbery - beating people and taking their money). For fifty-six months, from 1984 through 1989, Hopkins was one of three thousand inmates in Graterford State Penitentiary in Pennsylvania. While incarcerated, he decided to turn his life around. Hopkins studied for and earned his high school diploma, and also began to take part in boxing again, which he had done off and on as a youth.
During four years and eight months in prison, Hopkins won the national penitentiary middleweight championship three times. He converted to Islam during his incarceration and was paroled in 1988, as soon as he was eligible. His dedicated approach to the faith helped him build his successful monastic boxing career by instilling discipline in the once troubled young adult.

Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
Hagler was also a freakin strict boxer, I think these people just loved the gym and training :-)

Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
-of recents boxer B-Hop, Taylor and both of the Klitschkos would be well named

....Is the correct answer IMO. This was who i was going to say, there was a reason he weighed 180 odd and its becuase he was so trim. He could have easily have been slighty out of shape and caught up weight with his opponents but for stamina reasons he trained the hardest of all the heavie champs.

Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
I'm a big Marciano fan myself but you can see how tired he got in his fights. Just like Harry Greb (I think that's the guy) kept throwing them no matter what. If he was dizzy, tired or couldn't see, he still kept coming right back at them. He always had the extra gas to go the extra mile. If anybody's interested on what Marciano's own thoughts on what it takes to be number 1, check this link out. http://www.bobdelmonteque.com/pages/rocky.htm It's a rare artical.
Anyways I agree with most of the names mentioned, but I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Julio Cesar Chavez, that guy was a very dedicated athlete as much so as guys like Marvelous Marvin, and Bernard Hopkins. You gotta agree with me on that, he trained his ass off and left nothing on the table.

His therapist tells me that Pretty boy hears police sirens in his head. It isn't dedication that's giving him that get-up-and-go. ;)

Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
You've heard that from "Soul of a Champion"
Remember Floyd used to be a real club addict, maybe it's his excuse to stay away from those girls that has his number. ;)
Seeing one of his ex-girls are pregnant Floyd ducks behind a counter, "He guys, I gotta go train!"
And they're thinking that's one dedicated son of a bitch. ;D

CC#150 on me, you beat me to it....
JCC this guy was ALWAYS in the ring sparring and getting ready for fights, though there has been rumors that he used to :drunks: drink up and :fking: mess around with the ladies. That I'm aware of nothing ever really surfaced up but... Shit! Uuummm!! story goes he was :fking: Salma Hayek back in the days she was seeing with him at his house when he used to stay out in Los Angeles before..... So I was told. ;)
How about Salvador Sanchez, RJJ, Dariusz Michalczewski (though I don't a whole lot of him outside the ring inside he was always in shape and ready to go)
Today I would say; Cotto, the Marquez Bros., Margarito, PBF (tough if you take into consideration eating chips while working out then that does not show discipline), Kess, Joe C., SSM, Tszyu, Carlos Hernandez.

Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
The Mayweather Clan's Criminal Record these days:
-Stealing Delahoya's training bag
-Urinating in public
-Punching their respected elders
-Meter violation for parking overinflated ego
-Biggest mouth... Priceless ;D
You looking forward to that 24/7 special?
I'd like to see how they train but other than that after seeing Floyd's antics and lip, I'm thinking this is going to be another dramatised reality show. Hell, they might as well bring Ishe Smith, and because we're already tired of Mayweather's lip they outta bring out Dave Chapelle, at least that'd be funny.
Anyways getting back on topic I think another fighter worth mentioning is Archie Moore back in the day. Before his comeback he was one of the most disciplined fighter right next to Marciano at the time.

It's part of the show, I mean they are selling the shit! out of the fight.....
I can't wait for this man, I think it's gonna create a HUGE as buzz leading into the fight....

Um Ali was very undisciplined. He didn't take alot of his opponents seriously like Chuvalo, Frazier III, and he suffered for it. Early in his career he almost lost a few fights like against Doug Jones because he undertrained.

Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
I got the perfect strategy for Delehoya. Remember that Pernell Whitaker fight where he pulls Mayweather's shorts down. ;D Now if Delahoya has the huevos to do that it would do more than get even with Pretty Boy's antics. Game-- Set.

CC back. I was thinking a couple of these names as well (RJJ, Tszyu). RJJ was going at it full throttle when he was still taking names. Tszyu trained like a champion himself until the latter part of his career he had long bouts of inactivity. I think even the most dedicated fighters slow down in the end.
Even Marciano who was a big time gym rat was getting tired of the smell in the gym. I guess anyone has a point beyond staleness that they just want to hang up the gloves.

Ok, I have told this story before.
I was in a club, and Floyd Duckweather Jr was there near the bar. I was with my peeps and I ordered a MARGARITA and Floyd looked at me and ran like there was no tomorrow. Poor Floyd, he thought I said Margarito. Ever since Tony showed up and sneaked up behind Floyd and asked him why he was DUCKING him, FLoyd has been running every time he hears the name Margarita or Margarito. I guess Floyd does not know that Margarita is a famous Mexican drink.
JT Rock knows what video I am talking about. The one where floyd is constantly looking over his shoulder like he was hidding from somebody he owed money to or the police was after him.
I have the video on disk.
;)
And you know this man!
-
Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
lol, that's a classic campfire story. Now you know where he gets his shoulder-roll move from.
"What is it Floyd?", "I thought I heard somebody say Margarito" This one's on the house... ;)
Busted!

Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
Hagler and Hopkins are good ones that fit the bill. Of course, Marciano was the quintessential in-shape guy who always came in ready to rumble at full-tilt boogie.
-
Re: Most disciplined fighter of all time?
It was a big sacrifice for Marciano. He hardly got to see his family. The big thing with Marciano was that he was really single minded when it came to fighting and making the money. I also gotta say that a lot of the fighter's discipline falls on the shoulder of the trainer.
p.s. Nice avatar by the way.

Ricardo Lopez, at least as far as carrying out his fight plan.

Tszyu! His training regime was incredible. Fatton only beat him because of age.
