Is 27 too late to step into the ring
I am 27 and boxed for six years in the military, I suffered a serious injury that almost ripped my growing apart. Do you guy's think it's too late to jump in the ring or should I get in there and be like an old Rocky Bolboa. I don't want any titles or anything like that but I think it can keep me sharp.
Re: Is 27 too late to step into the ring
In short the answer is no. Although it goes without saying that you will have to be realistic about how much you can get from the game.

Thanks my British friend, I am not looking to be like Tito Trinidad or anything, but I think it would be great if all of us were able to step in the ring and be productive, in the least it would keep us on great shape.

Congratulations, you're the millionth person to ask that kind of question. As long as your doctor says your fit to train, then there's nothing wrong with you boxing.
Anyways what kind of aspirations do you have in regards to boxing? Do you want to keep fit? Do you want to compete amateur/professional. As long as you're willing you'll do ok.

So many people ask because they are insecure, sometimes they need a little push to get out there, I just would like to stay fit, boxing is a great workout, and it will keep you sharp just in case you ever need your skills in a fight.
Re: Is 27 too late to step into the ring
And you're not the insecure type then. It'll do you good, just listen to your own advice.

Easy bomber, I didn't mean to come off as a smart a** just poking some fun like I always do.
Anyways, I thought it was the thought of being fit is motivation in itself. If that's your goal why don't you give it another shot and see if you like it or not. Naturally if you don't like it you wouldn't stick with it for long right?
Let give you the buy-you-a-drink equivilant of me trying to make amends. :drinker: Have another CC on me. Forgive me, will ya. :)
I gotta tell you that Rocky Marciano gave it ago when he was 24, and he didn't have the experience that you have. What is important for him was that he was willing and more importantly was that he liked boxing. Now with how much time time you've dedicated to this board I wouldn't doubt for second that you like boxing. Now if you want to try the gloves on again and find out that you enjoy that part then go for it.
That injury isn't going to stop you, so just give it your all and have some fun. Keep sharp, keep fit and become a champion in your own right.
Anyways no hard feelings, I'm sorry if I offended you in what I said before.

Re: Is 27 too late to step into the ring
I know I stepped on somebody's toes, and I have an extra sad click stabbed in my back to prove it.
Re: Is 27 too late to step into the ring
Really 27 is not that old surely! Especially with 6 years experience. You'd assume 99% of boxers start at ten and finish at 18 sometimes with the way people worry. At least where I'm from they are the extreme minority. If you can still spar at a good intensity and keep your coach happy your age is the last thing that should stop you. In something like women's gymnastics - you hit puberty and you're done for and I can understand it but not with a sport that requires strength, mental maturity and skills that you've already previously developed for 6 years!
Re: Is 27 too late to step into the ring
Ok... I do have to jump in on this one.
I am 32 years young and will be 33 in June. I started boxing six months ago. If you ask me if I'm too old to get in the ring I'm going to tell you to get in the ring and find out for yourself.
It has nothing to do with age (with-in reason) but the shape that your in and most importantly your inner drive. Set your mind to what you want to do and then just f-ing do it!
I train as hard if not harder then 80 percent of the others. I figure if God created us all equal and if I apply myself twice as much to obtaining my goal then when we step into the ring you better not plan on taking it easy on this old man...
I am lucky in the fact that I am training with very skilled professionals that have been at this sport for a very, very long time. My willingness to listen to them, to do as they say, and to watch the other successful figthers in the club has led to their willingness to work with me in a very one-on-one way...
With that being said... I still had to prove that I was going to be there for the long haul before they begin to respect me. I took my fair share of beating during these past six months. Still in the last six months I have lost 40 lbs, I am in the best shape of my life, I look hot as crap... and that's evident by the amount of attention that I am getting from the ladies... and on top of that I have a newfound confidence in my ability to walk through this world knowing that there are very few average Joes that are going to be able to mess me up... not saying I'm bad to the bone... I just know my defensive training and conditioning will get me out of just about any physical jam that I could expect to encounter in an everyday setting...
So my answer to you is... Heck no 27 is not too old. I wish I was 27 and starting out... I'm not though and I'm not going to worry about it... I'm just going to keep to the game plan. I'm going to finish getting my arm back into shape... hit the gym hard and then start looking forward to my next fight...
It's heart dude... it's all heart!

Venom's the model of inspiration when it comes to heart. ;D
You can't argue with 40 pounds knocked off, and looking like hot crap, but goes to show you what can happen when you put your ass into the gear.
I remember hearing this trainer rant about how he wishes that he was just 35, just think how many dudes would kill to have a couple less candles on their birthday cake. Venom's the model of inspiration when it comes to heart. ;D

Re: Is 27 too late to step into the ring
no m8 it it heck to late
look at Barry Kenny, he started at 30 & became a pro at 34, i started when i was 26 & got mega into shape, even got offered a fight but i stopped training by that time & never went back into it, but it ain't too late my friend, if you want it, it will happen.
Re: Is 27 too late to step into the ring
i know it's not boxing. but I had my first MMA fight when I was 32. 35 now, and will have my first pro fight later this year if all goes well.
