Warren offers Jermain Taylor $4 million for Calzaghe Super Fight...
Warren offers Taylor $4 million!
Wednesday, April 11 2007
Promoter Frank Warren has offered middleweight champion Jermain Taylor four million dollars to come to the UK in September to challenge WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe. In addition, Warren has has agreed to having the WBO assign an American to referee the fight, a concession to the seeming "home cooking" quick stoppage of British referee Terry O'Connor in Calzaghe's recent fight with Manfredo. "Saturday's crowd in Cardiff for Joe's title defense against Peter Manfredo exceeded 35,000 -- a European indoor record. The only way to surpass that is for Joe to fight the best man out there and that man is Jermain Taylor," said Warren.

This match, IWO, is a no win fight for Calzaghe...even if he wins.
Taylor’s proven to be less than stellar when he needed to shine the most. Calzaghe’s volume with push Taylor over the edge, IWO. If Joe wins…everyone will just say that he defeated a blown up middle of a kid in Taylor.
If Taylor wins…his record becomes even more impressive than it already is…but he’d better pull it out convincingly.
So the question is...what will be your verdict on this one?

Re: Warren offers Jermain Taylor $4 million for Calzaghe Super Fight...
I picked the second option.
"Taylor? Please. What about Kessler?"
'Nuff said.
In the end...if Joe is injured & Kessler is injured...why try to make another fight?
Something stinks like rotten fish.

Re: Warren offers Jermain Taylor $4 million for Calzaghe Super Fight...
On FNF RJJ said he's fighting Taylor in September??????
What's up with that?
Personally I think Kessler is the best matchup. Taylor isn't the SuperMiddle champ so why not go for that first. I am unimpressed with Taylor going below his weight twice, then looking up? Same with Spinks, not impressed he's fighting Taylor. I think there are plenty of good fights in his own division and he will most certainly lose. Neither of them are dominating their own weight classes to need to go looking somewhere else for a challenge.
That's my 3 cents.....
-
Re: Warren offers Jermain Taylor $4 million for Calzaghe Super Fight...
Does Frank think $4 mill. buys him the world or what?
Anyway! I voted
I'm so sick of this Calzaghe mess...that I just don't care.

:coolclick: to a good 3 cents well spent.
Totally agree with the majority of that post.

Oh yeah...I also don't put any stock in shit that Roy says anymore.

Re: Warren offers Jermain Taylor $4 million for Calzaghe Super Fight...
I feel the same.
I don't see any reason for him to turn that one down though. There is no downside to that for RJJ. If he wins it he's on top, if he loses everyone says he's shot anyway.
Not good for Taylor though....

But not to Taylor. As the boxingtalk post for this states (as an "editor's note), JT gets this much $$ to fight IN AMERICA already. This "offer" is a Frank Warren sham that's just being made so that he and Joe's fans can have another top American fighter about whom they can say "Look, Joe wanted to fight the guy, he offered him a ton of money, but [American fighter--could be RJJ, B-Hop, or JT] didn't take it. So who's dodging whom?"
He should fight Kessler. But if FW actually made a meaningful offer to JT, and the fight did come through, JT would undoubtedly be the most-proven and best opponent Joe would have ever faced. I've never been very impressed with JT, but he's big and awkward enough that he at least kept it close with Winky (I gave it to Winky by a couple points), and IMO actually edged Hopkins the second time (not the first). And while I don't agree with the judges, he's still the only guy out there that had back-to-back-to-back "wins" over P4P top 3 fighters.
So Wacks, while I agree there are better fights, a JC victory over Taylor (assuming it wasn't a bullshit stoppage following a pitty-pat slap-barrage--a dangerous assumption to make, no doubt) would do more for me than any previous JC fight in terms of proving his talent to me. I just don't see anyone behaving as if it's equivalent to the Lacy fight, or claiming that it just shows Taylor was overrated or something. Seriously, if JC could actually do better than Winky or B-Hop against this guy, that would finally convince me that there's something to Calzaghe. He'd finally share a common opponent with proven top fighters--one that those other fighters were unable to dominate.
But I also think that if the fight did happen, it's likely that JC would break his hand by mid-fight and then lose. Seriously.

Re: Warren offers Jermain Taylor $4 million for Calzaghe Super Fight...
Excellent post Shza.
Basically you summed it up, if Taylor wants more money to go to England and move up in weight then Warren just goes back to the "he priced himself out" card. If it weren't for Jeff Lacy who would have done anything for a shot at Calzaghe and basically backing Joe into a corner, Joe wouldn't mean jackshit to me. And he's still nothing more then an excellent fighter who has one huge win. This is so tiring. Give Kessler his shot or go to America and THEN negotiate with the big names.
This Joe, or I should say Warren, bullshit is really getting on my nerves.

Re: Warren offers Jermain Taylor $4 million for Calzaghe Super Fight...
It would not surprise me in the least if JT excepted the offer!! ;D He fought BHop back to back and then Winky!! This kid is old school, he legitimately wants the big names. 8)

Re: Warren offers Jermain Taylor $4 million for Calzaghe Super Fight...
What about Kessler?
Taylor fights in May. Kessler has a months rest on Taylor. Calzaghe should just wait it out and go whenever Kessler agrees to go.
Taylor should fight Miranda next. They both should ready to rumble around the same time. Although Miranda just fought Green and is now taking on Pavlik.

I ain't no JT fan matter a fact I think the kids lost a step or two but you can't hack at him on his opposition. B-Hop & Winky back to back thats something there.

Ha ha ha ha ha! I laugh with you BoxingG...not at you...because in all likelihood...we'll see Calzaghe Kessler before Taylor ever man ups to Miranda.

Ouma and Spinks might be a division or two high ;D but at least they are quality opposition. Lets not forget your boy Bernard's only name wins were against small guys too (excluding his last fight). Why fight the rest when you can fight the best ;)

Names?
That's the funny thing about Bernard's record...everyone always forgets that he fought middleweights too...they just latch on to Oscar & Tito. Remember...he was the legit middleweight champion...just because your bun's to tight don't make ya right...loosen up that Hairdoo so you can rationalize. ;) ;D :-*

Totally disagree with you here.
The sad thing is...I really really was big up on Taylor. I got hooked on him the minute he hit ESPN2 & I was sold hook line & sinker. Then I started paying attention to the match making & when Dibella's hand fit snuggly up his ass & turned him into a puppet...I lost it.
Coming up Bernard fought something like 47 or 48 actual middles. I'd have to boxrec it to get an actual number...but the other handful were borderliner's & then you had Oscar & Tito & Tarver & the Mitchell loss at 175. There is where the huge difference lies between champion & Taylor. Sorry…but the men that Hops whooped were actual middles & they weren’t the walk overs that most fight fans claim they were.
The same can’t be said of Taylor. Do the math. He’s fought roughly 17 or 18 full fledged middles, the others were moving up from either 1 or 2 classes.
Granted fighting Hopkins & Wright speak bounds for Taylor...but he drew with Wright & the Hopkins win...well...that wasn't really what one would call a grandiose performance. I can give him the second match...but the first fight was not a win for Taylor...it shoudlv'e been a draw or Hopkins win...but that's just my opinion.
Heir apparent? Apparently that's still yet to be decided.

Re: Warren offers Jermain Taylor $4 million for Calzaghe Super Fight...
I can't see why Jermaine would take that money to go to the UK. They are both champions. Joe is the longer reigning champ, but Taylor is the champ in a more prestigious division. He also has (agree or disagree with the decisions, but they still count) wins over Winky and B-Hop. Joe keeps running his mouth about wanting Hopkins, but here is the guy who, at least in theory, beat him twice.
Joe is in no position to demand Taylor go to the UK for a middlin' sum of money. Joe should be willing to travel to the US for pennies (or pence) for the chance to fight Taylor, even if the fight is at 168 for the WBO belt. Calzaghe needs this fight more than Taylor. Taylor has quite a few other good fights for good money available to him without jumping over the Atlantic. Joe keeps talking about wanting to make a splash in America. Well, he better come here. Hopkins aint' gonna fight him in the UK, either. I would give him all the credit if he turned down Kessler to fight Taylor in Vegas or MSG. I couldn't knock him for that, even though personally I'd rather see him fight Kess.
At the end of the day, like Shza said before, this is just a b.s. Frank Warren ploy, so Joe can say "I tried to fight Jermaine, but he wanted too much and didn't want to come here." I wouldn't mind seeing this fight, but Jermain would have to be pretty stupid take only $4mil to fight Joe on his turf. Let Joe do the traveling if he wants this fight.
By the same logic, if Kessler really wants to to fight Calzaghe, he should be willing to leave Denmark to make it happen. If Warren offers Kessler 3 or 4 million (even 2 mil) to fight in Wales, and Kessler doesn't take it, Kessler should be take the heat.

Re: Warren offers Jermain Taylor $4 million for Calzaghe Super Fight...
What i want to know is why doesnt frank warren offer kessler 4million and a danish ref?
-
Re: Warren offers Jermain Taylor $4 million for Calzaghe Super Fight...
I'ma go out on a limb here and say jt actually accepts this offer, at which point however frankwarren will come up with some shit as to why the fight can not be made. People are hating on jermaine for having what people call 2 easy fights back to back, shit he can have 3 if he gives me 3 top names after that again. As shady as his wins were over hopkins and the draw against wright, the man stepped into the ring with 2 top pound for pound fighters not back to back, but 3 freaking times in a row, so he still has plenty of slack with me. As for joe kessler not happening, shit I blame both warren and palle, neither one of em really wants the fight to happen, they both just want the public to believe that the other guy is dodgin their respective guy. Fuck all if joes next fight isnt against a top name.
-
Re: Warren offers Jermain Taylor $4 million for Calzaghe Super Fight...
I took the second option: "Taylor? Please. What about Kessler?"
Let me get this straight; Joe wont fight Kessler in the fall, but will fight Taylor in the fall (September)??????? What is up with that? I am starting to think that maybe Joe doesnt want to fight Kessler. Why else fight Taylor? Dont tell me about this "big name to bring more attention to Joe" crap. That was what the Manfredo fight was for. It all stinks for me. What a load!!!! >:mad

CC. Agree with everything.
Warren's offer was a total joke, an offer that was meant to be turned down and then some of Calzaghe's fans could say look Taylor ducked him.
Even the second offer where they said it didn't have to happen two months after fighting Spinks was a garbage offer, Taylor can make that kind of money fighting jr. middles in his hometown.
-
Re: Warren offers Jermain Taylor $4 million for Calzaghe Super Fight...
It's clear that Calzaghe doesn't want to fight Kessler, but I believe it is more to do with money/prestige than fear. Taylor is a more skilled fighter than Kessler in my eyes, so if that fight is made, i'll be happy.
My conclusion is that no matter what Joe does he'll be criticised:
beats Kessler......................He was not that good
beats Taylor.......................He was above his natural weight and not quite as good as people made out
beats Hopkins.....................He was old and past his best

Probably right about what some detractors might say about victories over Hopkins and Kessler, but I don't think too many people would say Taylor was above his weight. Taylor is HUGE for middle. He's probably as much a natural SMW or LH as a middle and don't think Joe would be the bigger man in this fight. If Joe beats Taylor, everyone except the most dedicated Calzaghe-haters would give him his credit.
-
Re: Warren offers Jermain Taylor $4 million for Calzaghe Super Fight...
Id be very happy if this comes off. Taylor is a massive middleweight thats for sure, and IMO a very underated fighter by many. I give Joe the edge going into it but then agen i gave Winky and Bernard the edge! Looking forward to this one.
-
Re: Warren offers Jermain Taylor $4 million for Calzaghe Super Fight...
Calzaghe should be fighting Kessler, no doubt about that. The problem with this fight happening is that you have two promoters having a pissing contest. What they have to realize is that its the public generating the money for the fight, and the public doesn't care if they fight in a broom closet in Japan, they just want to see it. Both fighters should suck it up and have it in a city where neither is popular. Taylor Calzaghe would be a good fight, but at what cost? Taylor wins, Calzaghe wont fight in the states, and goes back to fighting nobodies and has-beens in Wales...Calzaghe wins, another american boxer embarrased by a european. Too much to lose from either side and it probably wont happen.
