Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
First how did he get so big. Second how come his jab was so much faster than it had been at LHW, and three why does he get all the talent. I mean he looked as quick as Mayweather at 199 pounds. I don't see how anyone can't see him being the best fighter ever. He was so fast, so strong, and yes skilled that I can't see how anyone would beat him p4p.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
I take it you haven't seen the documentary 'The Sweet Science' about how it all lead up to the fight with Ruiz.
Check your PM's. ;)

Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!

well according to RJJ he never hit the weights ever througout his career until he went up to HW to fight john ruiz thats how he put on so much size etc. i believe it cuz i stopped touching the weights like a year and 1/2 ago and i completely leaned out im hella LEEEEEEEEEEEEEAN son, b4 i was like more so mass from weight lifting but once u cut weights out your body completely leans out. so if u do the reverse like he did it will have a profound effect on your size like his

Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
But how did he maintain his stamina, speed, etc.? He is my favourite fighter ever, but there are things that don't add up, like the pimples on his back.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
Anyways people always had problems with RJJ because he could fight unconventionally and still beat all the best guys. That is the reason they say he had no technique when in fact he threw alot of his punches very well, and with his whole body behind them while other people couldn't do anything even close to him.

RJJ is just well discplined athlete with remarkable natural/hard worked talent. he even pulled the first tarver win by the same means while most other boxers would either be gasssed out, he dug deep for the win.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
bro ive seen RJJ fight live in person 4 times and when you see him put combos together live in person your like WTF?????????
dude just by the sound he makes while throwing punches you actually hear the air like LOUD as he lands combos with such speed and precision.

Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
Incredible feat by an incredible boxer. Peopel tend to downplay it because it was against John Ruiz, who no one likes. But what no one will admit is that Ruiz is a good fighter and was certainly no pushover, and Roy Jones made it look easy.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
Roy was fast that night against Ruiz but he looked faster because Ruiz is slow i think Roy should have stayed at heavy for a few defences it was a massive mistake coming back down to lightheavy it took to much out of his body and he was never the same again

Roy Jones vs Byrd would of been good tactical fight but i think Jones would of been to small against most hws like Lewis ect but yea your right he could of fought Byrd Holyfield and Tua wouldn't of been bad to make defenses against them guys.

Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
If he did'nt get caught he could beat Wlad at the time with his speed he could have tired Wlad out and beat him UD12

Not so sure about that im not big fan of Wlad but 6 ' 6 ½ who is around 240 vs a Natural Middleweight who is 5 foot 11 and is over 40 pounds lighter i don't think he could Wlad is way too big for him and Jones would feel power of the big man and remember Jones was 193 pounds vs Ruiz.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
I don't think ROy would like the power of the big men very much. I think he should have fought Holyfield or Tyson and retired.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
I think as long as he did'nt get caught he would beat him because Wlads stamina was'nt great in 2003 when roy was champ and even now Wlads best win recently is his ko of Byrd a small man he had already beat.If Roy had fought him it would have been a massive risk but a great win if he won

download it for free on Limewire my friend! ;)
it even has the Scarface My Block RJJ intro
and Ashanti singing the national anthem
brings back memories from that night at the thomas mack center. ive never been at such a onesided crowd event before!
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
Oh please,Ruiz is the least recognised Champ in the last ten years,he miraculously kept getting the title handed back to him
He's a puffed up cruiserweight, and whats even more shocking,he doesnt have any speed.
He was hand picked by Jones's people, and after the win,Jones got right out of the division so fast he left vapor trails
That fight is one half step up from professional wrestling

Here's a clip from that Roy Jones Documentary about that Ruiz fight, him training. And he had purposefully taken a beating from that heavyweight before hand in order to learn to absorb the punishment of a heavyweight fighter..but afterwards in this clip, he let loose.

Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
Once again not impressed, hell toney beat ruiz in dreadful shape and was on steroids like roy, Im sorry but Id be willing to wager bernard hopkins could outbox john ruiz if he put even more weight on (excusre me the juice) roy spectacular but that win never really mean anything to me
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
Please stop the nonsense ok, Roy could not beat a 240 pound man lets be real, he couldnt beat a a good 220 pound man at heavy ruix just plain is the one of the worst heavies i have ever seen
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
Pound for pound, I think Roy Jones is the pound for pound king of all times. Very strong and very skillful. I am still amazed watching his fights. He makes his fights so easy to look at. That's what makes him my greatest boxer.

Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
I always thought Roy Jones Jr. was an exceptionally good fighter. Great I suppose, but the thing he lacks is a great fight. You cannot compare him to Leonard or Hearns or Hagler or Duran who had those epic fights. That is why those guys are so remembered years later. Hearns especially, the man seems to have several epic fights. Roy Jones never put his all in a fight like Hearns or Hagler did. And that will hurt Roy's legacy. I do not care how awesome you looked putting your hands behind your back and knocking out or down a second tier fighter.

And funny how even when you do have some epic fights and WINS at that, your forgotten and no one really mentions your name.
Carmen Basilio comes to mind right off the bat, I mean his names mentioned here and there on the rare occasion but for some who fought the best of his time I think hes unappreciated....
It's mind boggling that this man had 5 back to back 'Fights Of The Year' thats just insane..... :o

He never had great fight because he didn't have to get into toe to toe war because he was so damn better than everyone else out there.

So is the final result of that that he will always have a slightly tainted legacy? I think you can say the same for Floyd Mayweather who just boxes the opponent and never needs to get into the toe to toe wars. He might be far better than some of the people he fought, but I'd still much prefer to see a war than a one-sided boxing exhibition, however good it is. And the worry is that RJJ still thinks he can do it, cause he can't, and he should just go swimming in his vault of gold like Scrooge McDuck.

Well it doesn't matter what people prefer if he can out box someone without getting hit with big shots then i would to wouldn't you ?? to be honest if i was Mayweather or ect i would box and box and box as much as i could in every fight with out getting hit with big shots instead of getting badly injured in toe to toe war i think anyone with good brain on the head would try and avoid toe to toe war as much as they could.

I agree totally, it's just that boxers won't be remembered as fondly by fans in 15-20 years cause he was a boxer rather than a warrior, and Gatti will live much longer in my memory as a legend rather than RJJ, even though RJJ was far superior technically.

Re: Roy Jones Jr. at heavyweight WTF!!
I guess you all can just put me down as another one of roy's "number 1 supporter"
Does anybody know anything about track and field? Well here's a brief history lesson and explanation as to why prime roy jones never had a "great competitive fight".
In 1968 the long jump record was 27 feet 2 inches, then out of nowhere came this guy named Bob Beamon, who took the record from 27 feet to 29 feet bypassing 28 altogether...this is sort like a quantum leap as far as the progression of records and evolution of man goes...
That's what prime roy jones was to the sport of boxing.....
