www.BOXINGCONFIDEBNTIAL.COM has learned that persistent lobbying by Peter Manfredo promoter Jeff Wald has resulted in something which may help restore the fighter's reputation somewhat. Wald has convinced Simon Block, the head of the British Board Of Boxing Control, that referee Terry O'Connnor may have been too quick on the trigger in stopping Manfredo's title challenge against WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe in Wales.

Block is preparing to conduct an official hearing into the matter. O'Connor jumped in stop the match as Manfredo lay against the ropes and Calzaghe rained punches, none of them heavy, upon him. There were 35,000 persons at the big show in Cardiff and millions more watching on HBO and domestic television. No one is expecting the result to be overturned but O'Connor can expect a grilling over his actions. Of course, you have to wonder why the Manfredo accepted a British ref and not a neutral one in the first place.

THE FOLLOWING IS JEFF WALD'S LETTER TO SIMON BLOCK, HEAD OF THE BRITISH BOXING BOARD OF CONTROL:

It was nice talking to you on Friday night. On behalf of all of us at the TOURNAMENT OF CONTENDERS, I want to thank you for your hospitality, cooperation, professionalism, and fairness.

We couldn't have got better results from the UK vs. US Challenge if we scripted it. Seven competitive fights with superb judging and refereeing.
The other side of the coin is the universally acknowledged unnecessary early stoppage in the Calzaghe vs. Manfredo fight. It was unfair to the 35,000 fans present and the millions watching in 62 countries around the world. It was grossly unfair to Peter who suffered zero damage and was NEVER hit with any force. He was not staggered, bleeding, knocked down, or weak kneed all of which might have made a stoppage justifiable. In the first fight I saw starring TOOKALOO? There were head butts and very heavy bleeding from both fighters, yet the fight was rightfully not stopped.

I could give dozens of examples of guys who were taking real beatings and went on to win. The most recent of which you were witness to (Curiel vs. Minter). As fans we saw Ali take a beating from Foreman for three rounds against the ropes and go on to win. We saw Michael Moorer beating Foreman like a drum for 9 plus rounds till George knocked him out.

Peter Manfredo trained hard for twelve weeks for this fight. He came to the UK and was respectful to his opponent, the press, and most of all the fans. He deserves an outcome that would be between the fighters not a referee who had not sweat blood and tears to get there. With all due respect we were warned by Colin Hart, Barry Mcguigan and others that this referee would pull the plug early.

In a world championship fight it is only fair to the fighters, the promoters, the TV presenters, the Board of Boxing, and again most of all the fans that this result not stand and that the Board declare the fight a NO DECISION. This takes the loss off Peter's record as well as show the fans that there can be fairness and justice even in boxing. The sport has be sullied enough without letting this stand.

I rely on your integrity and good will to see this have a fair and just outcome.

Well I agree the stoppage was atrocious, robbing Peter Manfredo, the paying fans and the British public of a fair fight.

But lets be honest all the referees are shit. I'd personally like to see the whole damn lot of them rounded up, herded into a concentration camp and gassed.

Then we could get some decent refs from the UFC like Big John McCarthy and Steve Massagati to ensure that these bullshat calls get stopped.

Peter Manfredo shouldn't have even been in the ring with Joe Calzaghe, he was totally outclassed and out of his depth. The ref has the right to call off a fight when its that one-sided. He could've called it off after 30 seconds for all I care, these sorts of ritual beatings shouldn't be sanctioned.

You have to give the fighters a chance to fight. You never know, espeically if Calzaghe had a broken hand. Ali got pounded mercilessly for 6 rounds by the hardest puncher who has ever lived, and went on to win the fight. You just never know...Manfredo was not hurt, so who knows what the outcome could have been. It was 2.5 rounds, and Calzaghe landed like 50-60 punches. Was not a "ritual beating" to that point.

Yea I was under the thinking of everyone else that the result was a forgone conclusion, but like Wald said he trained hard for 12 weeks and at least deserved to go out on his shield, rather than a jerkoff ref waving it off to soon

The stoppage was well dodgy at the begining of the flurry Calzaghe threw the ref was already hovering with his arms in the air then as Manfredo starts slipping under the punches ref stops it then its announced Calzaghes broke his something dodgy to me

the fact is the way the fight was stopped will affect british boxing in a bad way as fighters will feel that a trip to the uk to fight a british boxer will result in a robbing by way of stoppage, also joes name will be affected as many usa fans will say " he fights bums and gets refs who do this " there has to be something done before british boxing is hurt by this poor ref performance

i'll give the ufc that they might not have much else, but they got some pretty good refs. I don't think anyone would want to question John McCarthy after he gives them a warning.

I cant stand Terry O'Connor he is such an arsehole !!!

When i saw him standing there 'blimp fashion ' i suspected the worse .

O'Connor plus an outgunned Manfredo was a potential recipe for disaster it was embarrassing to see Manfredo get stopped so quickly when he clearly wasn't stunned or badly hurt.

But there was no standing 8 count and O'Connor looked like he was watching up a sweat SO maybe it was best that he stopped it before he keeled over in the ring from sheer exertion and we had to spectacle of a ref bellyflopping out of the ring or prone on the bottom rope with Simon Block biting his nails with eyes darting from side to side

I remember Bobby Vanzie saying ' O'Connor needed sorting out ' by the state of the fat cunt id suggest a fortnight at that Fat Farm my big fat whale of an auntie stayed at about 21 pounds (plus) ago after which we had to make of point of telling her how much weight she'd lost and not the mention the fact that she was just now a fat cunt with a dodgy tan and slightly whiter teeth .



O'Connor just irritates me with his treatment of fighters,i wish he's do one !!

Again, not to say I think Manfredo was gonna win, BUT stranger things have happened. It MAY have turned into an upset. Who knows, but the ref pulled the plug WAY too fast.

I remember this guy named Buster Douglas that beat the most ferocious heavy weight in recent history. Odds were crazy, no one thought it would happen. Upsets happen in boxing. RJJ got sparked by Tarver after thoroughly dominating him the round before. Stuff happens and that's why boxing is the most exciting sport around. Once the fight is made then let them fight. I didn't think it was the best fight for Joe, but what they hell, 35000 people drove there and a bunch of camera crews showed up..... Let them fight. Let one guy beat the crap out of the other, stop before someone gets seriously hurt, not before someone gets a bloody nose.

Difference is Douglas fought one of the most greatest hw performances seen in ring and Tarver is good fighter like him or not still talented guy Manfredo was shit scared you see it in his eyes he wouldn't of won no way in hell he was fighting wrong fight for start he was trying to jab on outside with much bigger man i don't get that for start only way Manfredo would of won is if he totally fought different fight and turned into 2 times better fighter other than that he had no chance in hell.

The stoppage was very pre-mature. You only stop a fight when a man cant not protect himself. Manfredo was bobbing and weaving and covering up. To me I thought Manfredo was trying to let Calzaghe punch himself out. I do believe that this fight was too soon for Manfredo. Freddy Roach was busy with Oscar De La Hoya and that makes a big difference in a fighters confidence. My dad trained me and I hated it. Freddy Roach is the best trainer in the world and to have that missing from your plan of attack is damaging enough.


Another thing when is Joe Calzaghe ever going to fight a real #1 contender. To me he is avoiding Kessler and Bernard Hopkins. Both would destroy the light fisted Welshman. Him and his countryman have no backbone. Calzaghe has class but his fellow countryman are a bunch of no respecting bums. To boo the country that keep your existence alive on this earth is crazy. Boy do they have short memories.
