FROCH v CALZAGHE Hennessy sports unveil the offer made
Hennessy keen to continue Froch-Calzaghe negotiations
Given the lack of clarification on the terms of Frank Warren’s offer for British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion Carl Froch to challenge WBO champion Joe Calzaghe, Froch’s promoter Mick Hennessy has tabled a proposal of his own to stage the all-British super fight on a Hennessy Sports event either this July or September.
“After being made aware of Frank Warren’s comments over the last few days, I’m pleased to confirm that negotiations have started with his company Sports Network about a super fight between Carl Froch and Joe Calzaghe,” confirmed Hennessy.
“We were keen to negotiate this fight in the background to its conclusion, but articles published in the News of the World, The Nottingham Evening Post and the Guardian have left me no option but to go on record and address this matter.”
Hennessy explained: “Sports Network’s matchmaker first got in touch with us at the end of last week to ask if we were serious about making the fight. I said: ‘of course: very serious’.
“I explained we were fine with it being staged by Sports Network if the deal was right, but stressed that there couldn’t be any options on Carl Froch’s future fights.
“The matchmaker suggested that this could pose a problem and that Frank Warren would require some kind of options if Carl beat Calzaghe, but told me that he would get back to me. I then received a simple text on Saturday morning with a money offer for July or September, but there was no mention of the situation regarding options.
“I requested clarification on their position regarding options in writing to our fax number, but received nothing. The lack of response suggests there is an issue, but this would appear to contradict Frank Warren’s comments in the Guardian yesterday. At this moment, their stance on options is still unclear to me.
“I am happy to continue negotiations for Carl to box on a Sports Network event, but need to know they won’t require an involvement in Carl’s career after the fight if he wins. Given Frank Warren’s apparent confidence in Calzaghe, it would be a contradiction if they did.”
Unbeaten British and Commonwealth champion Froch has been promoted by Hennessy since his professional debut five years ago. He is currently ranked third by the WBO and second by the WBC, having stopped 17 of his 21 victims. He will move up a position in both rankings once Bute is removed for contesting a final eliminator for the IBF championship, leaving him at #1 with the WBC.
Hennessy has long claimed a fight between the Nottingham boxer and Calzaghe is a marquee affair that would create significant nationwide and global interest. In order to make it happen, he has attempted to set the politics aside and made a firm offer of his own.
“This is a massive fight, between two of the best fighters in the world who both happen to be British,” added Hennessy. “Joe Calzaghe is a great champion and a true warrior. I believe it will take a very special fighter to beat him, but I believe Carl Froch to be just that.
“This is a marquee contest that needs to happen and options shouldn’t get in the way. As such, I have attempted to put all the confusion to one side and made an offer to stage the fight in either July or September.
“I feel the offer was very generous. If you take the amounts that the champion and challenger receive from WBO purse bids, (75/25%), my offer values the total fight at twice the amount of Frank Warren’s. It would also result in Joe Calzaghe receiving 6 times the amount of Sports Network’s offer to Carl.”
Unfortunately, the proposal has already been knocked back.
“Within an hour of sending the offer, it was turned down by their matchmaker,” said Hennessy a short while ago. “The text offer to Carl was also re-iterated as a final offer, but did not mention whether they required options or not.
“I have again sought clarification on this. There is little point in us even discussing the offer they have made for Carl to box on a Sports Network show until we know their position for certain.
“Once they have stated in writing, as requested, that they do not require options, we can look at the possibility seriously. They have stated that the offer was their last, but I am confident that through ongoing dialogue we could come to an arrangement that reflects the magnitude of this fight.
“This contest could be one of the biggest in British Boxing history. Calzaghe already holds the record for the highest indoor attendance, but it would be blown away if he met Carl Froch.
“I see Jermain Taylor has turned a big offer down. There now isn’t a bigger viable fight out there for Calzaghe, so I’m hopeful his team will be realistic going forward.
“In light of their rejection, I have also asked what terms would be acceptable to Joe Calzaghe to defend against Carl on one of our shows. I am still very hopeful that this contest can happen, regardless of whose event it is on.”

I reckon that this would be a great fight domestically, with other avenues against Taylor and RJJ seeming to have fallen through, and Mikkel Kessler not wanting to fight in July, so I would welcome it. Calzaghe's next fight has to be against a name, and no doubt Froch is ranked by the organisations and probably deserves a shot. And it would be a crackin Wales v England event too!

Re: FROCH v CALZAGHE Hennessy sports unveil the offer made
Ugh. This is manifestly not a "super fight." No one outside the UK knows or cares who Carl Froch is. Calzaghe needs to fight Kessler, Taylor, Hopkins or Wright (and needs to make or accept serious offers (i.e., not demands Taylor come to Wales for the same money he'd get to fight someone else in Arkansas, or weird time-limited offers to Kessler) to make one of those fights happen).

:coolclick: #561 Smash.
I am sure that you'd return the favor...but after my response...I am sure that you won't. ;D
I hope that this fight happens & that Joe utterly destroys him & outboxes him down the stretch to a knockout. I am NO FAN of Froch.

wack im curious to think what you think of Froch, everybody seems to think he is overrated? But to be honest who has rated him? I thought he looked good in the last fight and i believe he is a lot better than JC's last fighters right? I think if he has a good punch rate and mixes in the power i really could see a stoppage yano. He is an awesome fighter.

Yes come to think of it Tam you have sort of changed my mind today if Calzaghe can't get fight with Jones or any of the others then maybe it would be good idea for Froch vs Calzaghe would be huge event in Uk must be better than Inkin fight anyway.

I thought my mind powers would eventually work ;D It does make sense though when you truely think about it? In all honesty i want him to fight Kessler but if not Kessler, Froch is always there and i do believe it was the best fight for him to take in the July period. It could only lead him onto the Kessler fight right?

Re: FROCH v CALZAGHE Hennessy sports unveil the offer made
No way Calzaghe has another fight in July, its too soon
I know his last fight was nothing but he still did weeks of hard training, I cant see Joe wanting to fight a non name like Froch so soon, maybe a big name but not Froch

Ummmmmmmmmmm...hello...I think that was my question, Mr. ICB! ;) ;D
All cock blockery aside...personally...I think that many MANY people hype him to the point of no return.
I would like Froch if it weren't for his gotdam mouf. You see...it's like this...I hate mouthy ass fighters...I do. Even though Hopkins, Jones, & Floyd are among my favorites (...and YES! I do recognize the fact that they are mouthy) they have fought rateable fighters & are worthy of selling their show with their mouths.
Froch is not.
I like his power & he does have skills...but he is often wide ass open...just like Kessler is from time to time...hence the reason that I would rather see Kessler vs Froch.
Also...Joe would beat Froch. There isn't a fighter around that can make Joe's output nor could they accomodate for his awkwardness, IWO.

Must resist the goading....must resist....GRRROOOOAAAAAAAARRRRR! :bounce: The Hluk cometh. Just because you're born somewhere doesn't necessarily mean anything. I was born in Leeds but raised in Wales, and JC is ours I tell ya, OURS!
Anyhow, I will rise above your petty nationalism, trying to claim our nation's best fighter for your own (just like you did with Michael Owen in football), and I will agree with Wack's comments, for the most part. Whenever I watch Froch I always think that he is going to get caught, and dangling that lead so low gives me heart attacks. Also I reckon Joe would outwork him, and has the chin to come back if a lucky swing from Froch lands him on his bum.
My question though Wack, is would you agree that your boys Hopkins, Jones and Floyd were mouthing off on their way to the peak? British fighters tend to be brought on slower than they are stateside, so he is still getting to his peak at the moment, and is entitled to a bit of self-promotion, even if it does lack decorum.

I agree with the mouth part that he does open it up a lot of the time. But i have relised that every time he has opened up the mouth he has proved what he has said and for that i do give him respect. Everything he has said he has done and because of that i do think he could be going places. We can see his power is very dominanent and this is why i feel a bit worried for JC, if CF gets a good punch rate going and lands those lethal uppercuts, i can really see JC getting slowed down and hurt. I have a good feeling about CF in this fight and i do hope he doesnt get owned! But i do admit JC has the edges over CF but i think this will be JC hardest fight in years.
