Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
Williams told the Las Vegas Review Journal that he refuses to lose and won't change his style when he steps in the ring with the hard punching Margarito. He does give Margarito respect for backing out of a June bout with Miguel Cotto in order to fight him.
July 28 is the likely date for the fight, in either Las Vegas or California.
What a fwocking fight this is going to be. The TJ tornado fighting ANOTHER tough opponent!

Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
Be interesting,Margarito has had trouble with Southpaws before

I don't think he has apart from when he was younger. He had a close fight with the 170 pound plus Santos and he dealt with the slick Martinez pretty well too.

Man,I'm not getting into this again,we have been here a million times, bastard! >:mad >:mad :D ;D :D ;) Clottey was whining like a bitch, looking at press Row "I broke my hand" after EVERY round.

Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
Margarito is more adaptable than the Punisher,WIlliams not wanting to tighten up his D could be his downfall.

Both the Santos loss and the earlier Jones loss, both Southpaws
The other two losses were so long ago,I have no idea, but Id be willing to bet,Southpaw

Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
He was about 16/17 when he fought Jones, with a limited amateur background.
Well P4P,if you think Clottey won the first, you neeed to go watch it again. Clottey always starts fast and gasses,Tony usually starts slow. Tony was injured too yet you didn't hear the rugged Tijuana native complaining "oh my wrist","oh my ankle". Clottey was outwilled.
-
Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
i think Paul Williams is the hungrier of the two to be honest at this point.
-
Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
plus toney looked awful against clottey for what ever reason. hes already looking on the decline IMO

The basis for that statement is? Tony has been busting his balls and this is his first million plus payday with another in the waiting(winner of the Cotto Zab fight). I'm sure that'll make him hungry.

Wrist injury, ankle injury, poor camp were all factors to take into account to.

I just can't agree with you that he was "outwilled". I mean even you have to admit, he obviously did hurt his hand.. Sure Tony may have had injuries that he had been dealing with, but it's not as if he would have entered the fight if he was literally in pain on the day of.. And Clottey is perfectly capable of fighting 12 rounds, it's not as if he's a total front runner, he is just a better boxer than Tony.. You think he would have lost still if he didn't hurt the hand? I can't see it.

does anyone really truly feel Toney lives up to the publicity and hype that ARUM created for him? especially as of right this moment?

Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
I DO admit though,Tony looked HORRIBLE V cLOTTEY.(I'd say he was at 70%,he still won though)

I thought he looked really really sharp in sparring until the injury.I din't think they'll leave anything to chance this time.

I don't see it any other way. PLenty of fighters have had broken hands,Floyd got pain in his spine in that fight he took a knee, yet he didn't whine about it,he got up and fought on. Clottey always gets gassed, did against Baldo, did at times v Chico, certainly did against Gutirrez and Tony. Tony always comes on strong. The fight was nearly cancelled when Tony twisted his ankle in sparring, thats how bad it was.
He is a better boxer, but his body is wide open all day long and TOny works the bod really well. Wacth the end of the 9th round where Tony sends him into the corner and bangs away.Clottey was getting worn out with Tony's shots which were not even fully powered.
I can't see how one can make the assumption that he DEFINITELY would have won had he not been injured.

Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
im not saying toney is a bum or garbage, far from it, i have mad respect/love for toney, but does anyone really feel he lives up to the hype/publicity and more so IMAGE of being the "boogie man" that ARUM so cleverly created?

No...but if he beats Williams...you definitely can't ignore him.
As for people mentioning that Margo has a limited am. background...so has Williams. It's not an excuse.

i think its the other way around to be honest bro paul williams was chasing margarito more so than the other way around.
so when paul actually landed the fight will toney i was like whoa? didnt see that one coming hahaha
-
Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
now if toney fight cotto and gets passed him it would mean more to me, but i see cotto beating toney IMO!
-
Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
I think Williams and Margo both need this fight...Margo is just with a bigger promotional company.I'd like the winner to take on the winner of the Zab-Cotto fight...then that winner take on Mosley,Hatton,or Floyd.

Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
Good fight. Williams is relentless. Still a little raw. Show good stamina though. If he can hold up to Tony's power, or constantly beat him to the punch, it will be very interesting.
Williams winning would mean more for his career. I want to see Tony win, and face the Zab-Cotto winner.

Jones was a very awkward Southpaw

Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
Margarito has a chance to silence all the haters against Paul Williams, for about 5 seconds. Then, the same Margarito haters will turn on Williams, saying he's not ready to fight Margarito, Arum set it up, tony's breath was bad and put him off etc. etc.
-
Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
How many times has a fighter said he did well in sparring with some guy, and then he gets demolished in the actual fight. Williams is a tall guy but comparing him to the great Thomas Hearns is ridiculous. He fights more like Michael Nunn without the legs. Tommy Hearns was a great fighter even when he was coming up. We knew he was something special then. Hearns would have beaten Margarito. Williams in my mind will not.

Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
My point is that Hearns would beat Margarito, but I am not too sure Williams can. A guy who does well in sparring against someone has alot of factors which can be the reason for this. Margarito might have a hard time with Williams, but he should prevail with experience.
-
Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
Can Williams take a punch? I've only seen him fight once and it was against a name i didnt recognize. Margarito, I saw just totally demolish Kermit Cintron, who was supposed to be pretty decent. Williams may be able to really get some rounds in over Margarito with his height/reach advantage by boxing smart but even in the fight I saw him with against the no name guy, the no name guy was comin in with some wild lunging punches that were connecting dead on Williams' grill. When I saw Cintron get his ass handed to him, it was big lunging punches that were doing a lot of the damage. And those punches were coming from Antonio Margarito. So based on the little bit that I have seen from these two fighters, I would say Paul Williams should be making some type of changes to tighten up his defense. If he gets caught by a few wild (albeit well timed barrages of "wild" as Margarito is experienced, has good timing and just isn't wild in a stupid way), lunging Margarito counters, it could change the direction of this fight is going in a second.
-
Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
See for me this is a easy fight for me to call. I'm not a Margo fan but this Mofo can Hit Hard I say he is going to KO Williams
-
Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
I expect this to be a great fight! I think Margarito will come through the victor though by decision. Sure Williams can bang but Margarito ain't throwing soft either. I think Tony breaks Williams down, comes on strong as the fight progresses & takes him into the deep water where Williams may be just hanging on for the last couple of rds.
-
Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
If Williams stands and trades with Margarito he's going to get knocked out. Margarito can be outboxed. But he damn sure isn't getting outslugged.
-
Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
Just don't think there is a fight out there that I am more confused about. Am starting to lean towards Margarito as Williams defense is just nonexistant, which for some reason I never took note of before. Well, it was better versus Mitchell then it was Matthysse. Versus him, his hands were just dreadfully low.
But I like Paul to be somebody, go Williams.
-
Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
I'm leaning towards Williams.Margo is going to try to rush in and throw bombs...BUT...he is going to have to get through a barrage of punches.Williams isnt the best boxer nor does he have great defense...he just overwhelms you with punches.
-
Re: Paul Williams promises to bang with the Tijuana Tornado!
But Williams isn't the most aggressive either and one thing I noticed is that he doesn't throw much when the action in at a standstill, doesn't counter very well, he is going to have get off first every time out, something he didn't do with Matthyse. They will both keep distance, and I think Williams has the ability to slip a lot of Margarito's long straight shots, it's those rangy uppercuts that scare me. I'm picking Williams but I really hope he at least picks his hands up a little. Not much is made of Margarito's uppercuts but they could be a deciding factor.
