Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
OK you big fight fans. Has anybody gotten that funny feeling before a fight where something happend that made you go Oh Sh**t.. He's gonna lose now, then..bang he loses.
I got 3 that stick out right now...
Hamed vs MAB. He just couldn't make that flip over the ropes.
Lewis vs Rachman. Lewis decided a week before the fight to call himself The Lion. That has got to be bad luck...and he never called himself The Lion afterwards either.
Tito vs Hopkins. No not 9/11, to me it was him singing and dancing "regeton" before getting into the ring. I remember thinking that I had never seen him dance before stepping into a ring.
Anybody else notice these things or am I the only idiot that does...

Spinks hiring the BIGGEST rapper from his hometown to do the homecoming intro to his big rematch with Zab ;D
-
Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
Zab hitting Baldomir in the hip before the fight. I expected a close fight, Showtime didn't and they were a bit miffed as to why he would stoop to that level against an inferior opponent. Because he knew he wasn't ready to fight.
Lacy nervously walking to the ring. That was gut wrenching.

That was the first thing that popped into my head, but I cant think of any more off the top of it. Actually, in the same fight about round six Naz hit Barrera with a corking uppercut and grinned at Barrera then Barrera shrugged and waved him in lol, then I thought to myself 'Naz, your really fucked now'
I agree with TheBESTP4P though great idea for a thread!

I remember when Tyson really hit spinks hard and he went down and the ref got to the eight count. I said to myself, man this is going to be bad.

Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
Tyson got knocked down by Greg Page before the Buster Douglas fight
Any challenger who loses someone close to them before a big fight is a positive omen (usually because they dedicate the fight to them...someone dying is never good but usually boxers fight harder at those tough times) for them but not so much for the champion/favorite

Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
I know this is about upsets, but I have a couple stories about omens I'd like to share.
The night before his fight with Timothy Doyle, Sugar Ray Robinson dreamed exactly how his opponent would die. He dreamt that he killed his opponent in the 8'th round and how it would happed. It had such a profound effect on him that he tried to pull out of the fight, but the promoters and his manager talked him into going through with it. As turned out his dream really was a premonition, and his opponent Tim Doyle died just the way he looked in Robinson's dream the night before. It shook Robinson up enough that he'd lose his killer instinct from then on. He still pulled of some beautiful fights regardless.
I remember reading before, I can't recall the event or the fighter's involved, but the bout was done outside on a cloudy day and one fighter died and when it happened the sky opened up and a beam of light shined on the dead fighter's body. Wow... I even saw the photograph and it was really something else.
Strange looking at some of the old 15 rounders, I remember Jersey Joe Walcott was kayoed in the 13th round by Marciano after controlling the fight up to that point. I'm not sure if he was kayoed by Joe Louis in the 11th, or 13th round.
"If you believe in omens, Manfredo-Calzaghe takes place nearly 20 years to the day of Leonard's epic upset of 'Marvelous' Marvin Hagler. Like Leonard in 1987, Manfredo is facing what many pundits consider insurmountable odds."

Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
Yup. It's true about Robinson and Doyle. Actually there is footage of priest talking to Robinson before the fight convincing him to fight. Lot of people contend Sugar Ray lost his KO instinct that night.

Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
I saw that clip too, it was in a documentary.
Knowing that, if I had a dream that I had a dream that let me know that my hands would kill the guy I'd pull out of it. No priest or prayer would persuade me otherwise. I wouldn't care if a pussy, coward, or anything. Who wants killing on their conscience? It really did effect him just like some other fighters, Emile Griffith, and some others I can't think of. They hold back instead of following up their shots when their man is hurt.

Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
Dont know about the tito one...
The raggaeton had been in his entrances for a while..From about ried onwards.. Infact i think baby rasta y gringo did a couple ringwalks with tito lol..
Lol..the dancing wasnt so bold before ..but hes a lively character our felix..
Was loving the dancing thou..He stopped and put his gloves out in front of him just before entering the ring.. so hes dancing and i look to the left and saw papa trinidad's face..
Priceless!! He just looks at felix jr like..What are you doing..!
Classic

Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
Exactly what I was thinking. What are you doing Tito? He had regeton before but I don't remember him ever stop and dance the way he did that night...I might be wrong though.
That was great information on SRR. I didn't know about that. Gonna have to check that documentary.
I just thaught of another one....
DLH vs PBF. Floyd Sr. returning to the PBF camp...HAHA just kidding...
-
Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
lol, it's more like a stick in Uncle Rodger's butt. You could also read into "sinco de mayo" as an omen, and Floyd isn't one bit mexican. ;)
-
Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
Lennox Lewis filming that Oceans movie.
Tyson showing up with Don King not training.
An underdog getting really pissed off at being the underdog.
I remember I was watching someone interview Matt Serra before his St Pierre fight and they were talking and then the guy who was interviewing him said something. And Serra looked at him and said "You really don't think I have a chance in this fight do you?" And the guy said something like "No one does" or something. It was on UFC Unleashed. And after that Serra got a new look in his eyes. And I remember thinking to myself.... "Aww shat!!!"

Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
* Nas not doing the flip before the Barrera fight
-
Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...

Not only that, but Trinidad looked like a fag/little bitch with that hat/outfit he was wearing into the ring that night.

Good stuff
Hatton not having his morning fry-up on the day of the Floyd fight.
The Naz one is what I immediately thought of. After all the fuss about the gloves too.
-
Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
I can't see how Cotto losing would be such a great upset. Sure I think he will win but its certainly no foregone conclusion. As for Naz I never thought he had a chance with Barrera I always thought that Barrera would beat him.

When i saw the weigh in for Tszyu V Hatton i immediately thought "shit Tszyu looks drawn and gaunt" then he doesn't make the weight, then has to lose a little and try again. I knew then he was stuffed!

He didn't do his usual ring entrance jumping over the ropes!
Combination of both.

Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
the glove arguements have been bad omens in another fight..........vernon forrest-ricardo mayorga................vernon forrest was tripping about using grant/reyes gloves..............and also was tripping about the ring size.............and we all know what happened in that fight (1st one)

He did do his jump over the ropes ;) Coz i remember he kicked one of those signs off the ring apron but the thing for me was the way he looked at the weigh in. And the way when they were getting the instructions from the ref, kt had his hands up ready to shake the whole time like he was nervous or out of sorts.

Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
Mayweather vs. Hatton.
All the treash talk was gone and Mayweathers last comment was in Ricky's face "I'm the best."
-
Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
I dont believe in that stuff tbh im a firm believer in science.
Intresting nevertheless.
-
Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
No anti-Floyd videos all week from Danny... that has to spell doom for Cotto, right?
-
Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
Does Atlas picking Cotto count as an omen?
-
Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
Cotto agreeing to fight Margarito is a bad sign for Cotto.

Re: Bad Omens before Big Upsets...
When Cortez deducted the point from Hatton-PBF. I knew Hatton would then get desperate, rush in and get tagged. That exactly happened.
