Favourite Boxers, who never quite become a star.
I have a few guys i really admire and hope they become huge stars but never quite get over that final hurdle.
My first is Ike Quartey. I love the way he fights, always well conditioned, always competitive, but never got that one win to put him up with the top guys. I mean the man can fight he has had close decisions against delahoya, vargas, wright and forrest, if he could have beat one of them he would be making way more cash.
Can anyone think of other guys like this who you wish had a little bit more luck and became a star.

How was the fight with Wright close? Like close as in he didn't get knocked out but it went to the scorecards?

isn't he coming back???
hahahaaha

Re: Favourite Boxers, who never quite become a star.
Maybe should replace close with competitive. I mean i thought he beat oscar, and could have gone either way with vargas. A win against either would have catapulted ike to stardom

ouma one of my favorite that just can't quite make it.

Larry Mosley. Really liked this guy early on when he fought on Oscar's HBO Latino cards. He lost something though. Kassim Ouma was a good one.

Not that i like him, but zab judah is another who thru stupidity never qutie became the star he could have.

Re: Favourite Boxers, who never quite become a star.
Judah is probably my favorite fighter who never became a star. (Although becoming a world champ is a bigger accomplishment than 99% of fighters can claim.)

Re: Favourite Boxers, who never quite become a star.
luisito espinosa he was big here in PI but not in the US.
-
Re: Favourite Boxers, who never quite become a star.
Micky Ward...he was a star in my mind.
-
Re: Favourite Boxers, who never quite become a star.
Herbie Hide ... But I was young and naive ;)

Re: Favourite Boxers, who never quite become a star.
i think both marquez bros should be stars by now!

Re: Favourite Boxers, who never quite become a star.
Theres so many to mention depending on what you count as made it.. I think of it as big star level and recognition from the casual fan...
Micky ward.
Jab Zudah..Still has a chance
Kassim Ouma
Its kinda close but great fighters like Julian Jackson, Terry Norris,Iran barkely Benn Eubank and lots of great middleweights/light middleweights never really made hugge paychecks in all fairness..
Prince Naseem..Was huge and the hype was big for as long as it lasted..
In my honest opinion i dont actually think pernell whittaker gets the credit he should as a fighter..
Kostya Tszyu gets credit from the big fans but not enough superfights to become as big as he could have
I may have kinda changed topic on this subject..Lol..But im sure a couple people can catch my drift

If that's what we're talking then Ricardo Lopez has to be up there!!!

Ryan Rhodes was a star in the making to follow Naz but then his chin let him down

Micky Ward is a star among the sport...Micky falls into the Jerry Quarry catagory...Appreciated for his heart and desire showed in every fight just not physically skilled enough to maintain the top level....but that heart and desire will always make him a favorite among the fans

Re: Favourite Boxers, who never quite become a star.
Fernando Vargas
Meldrick Taylor
Jerry Quarry
Micky Ward
George Chuvalo

Despite the looks, skills and excellent Grim Reaper image Robin Reid never quite became the star he could or should have been. Probably due to who was around him at the time. Carl Thompson was another one. Very exciting, more bang for your buck that ten slugout shows but he was completely eclipsed by the Brunos, Benns, Hameds etc etc.

Good one forgot about him.

Re: Favourite Boxers, who never quite become a star.
Its a shame he did'nt beat Calzaghe then they could have had a trilogy of their own it would have helped both there careers like Ali vs Frazier Benn vs Eubank even though they only fought twice Barrera vs Morales Bowe vs Holyfield

Re: Favourite Boxers, who never quite become a star.
Vargas is a good one..
People dont even give him the credit for only ever loosing to definate future hall of famers..
And even if he had lost that controversial decision over winky wright he'd still have the same claim..
On top of that i also had him up at the stoppage against mosely in the first fight :P Had to get that in!
He sure lets himself go inbetween fights and thats not good..But even now he could probably get some big fights to leave with some legacy but i think he probably wont be bothered and leave without fighting again.. Thats assuming that me hearing that vargas mayorga has actually been called off is right?!

Michael Clark...I trained with him and was apart of his gym for awhile for over 2 years...great guy....very cocky....got his biggest spotlight on The Contender second season...but that weight was too much for him...he's a lightweight-LWW...won the WBO title....had a great record...but never took off to household name status...I tell everyone I know though...:)

Re: Favourite Boxers, who never quite become a star.
Joe Calzaghe could have been a star but spent all his career fighting second rate fighters and kissing Frank Warrens ass :)

Re: Favourite Boxers, who never quite become a star.
Vargas and Ward were stars, Tszyu is a good example though. Most avoided fighter of our generation. Nobody wanted to fight this guy. Probably top 10 p4p of this era.
