Why did we never get a Corrales/Freitas II
Why didnt this rematch ever happen? Imo Freitas was dominating until his tank went on empty and Corrales was finally able to connect, imo Freitas only lost cause of conditioning, the whole Popo quit so he shouldnt get a rematch is trash cause even the great Duran got a rematch against Leonard after quitting in the middle of the round, and he wasnt getting hit like Freitas was, i just think that this would have been a hundred times more entertaining than Corrales/Casamayor III
Re: Why did we never get a Corrales/Freitas II
Well, it didn't happen immediately because Freitas retired from big fights. Then he fought a couple in Brazil that nobody knew about. And Corrales went on immediately to take on Castillo and you know how that fight turned out. So from there it was the big money rematch, and then since he got to keep his belt, it was the mandatory against Casamayor. Didn't make weight so now he's at 147.
I think if you look at the records you wonder why they didn't rematch such a great bout but I don't ever think the fight was even considered. IMO, the one that should really happen and hopefully has a real shot as both have upcoming bouts at the same weight, is Barrios. That fight could be made 30 years from now and I would watch. Really can not believe they haven't had a second go round, 3.5 years after their first classic.
Re: Why did we never get a Corrales/Freitas II
IMO cause Freitas pulled a No Mas... he don't wanna get embarrassed again!!!
He quit, he got no heart, why should Corrales wanna fight him again & why would I wanna see it?

I have. In fact it's one of my favorite fights. He said no more. Big deal? Frazier said no more. Duran said no more. Tszyu said no more. And I bet there are a hell of a lot of boxers out there who wish they had said no more. You think Meldrick Taylor would swallow 2 pints of his own blood with a broken eye socket if he had the chance again? Doubt it. If Freitas felt he had nothing to give, then he was right in saying no. Now next weekend he has the opportunity to fight. Who knows? Maybe it's because he did say no.

When did Frazier say no more? He wanted to continue in Manilla!
Big deal, thats what makes a fighter! Micky Ward never would have said no more.
Ali fighting with a broken jaw. Gatti broken hand so on & so forth.
If you ain't gonna fight to the end or until the ref stops it then you shouldn't be taking peoples money who come to watch you fight!
Re: Why did we never get a Corrales/Freitas II
Did Joe want to continue? Honestly, I thought he quit on the stool. I know he was fairly unresponsive on the stool and rested there for a bit afterwards.
That might have been how things were in 1940 but fighter safety is at a premium now, if a fighter doesn't want to continue, he shouldn't be pressured to do so. And he definitely shouldn't be chided for it, especially since the fight up to the stoppage was a very good one. Duran is one of the most respected fighters of all time, and he said no more. I would much rather see Freitas - Corrales and see a fighter quit then watch something like Byrd - Williamson or Castillo - Reyes where neither fighter even puts themself in the position to think about whether or not to carry on.

Futch pulled the plug on that fight, Ali slumped down on the stool too, both were shattered!
I agree the Corrales/ Freitas was a good fight, very competitive until Corrales started to connect.
There will always be that black mark on Duran's record.
Fighters that wanna quit should move to MMA where their given an out & it's acceptable to quit.

Until you've taken the shots from Corrales that Freitas took that night why would you say he has no heart ???
Does Tszyu have no heart too ??? Or Duran ???

I took my shots in my time & never quit!!!
Duran quit due to frustration, not being hurt. But I bet he still regrets it!!!
I seriously think Tszyu hurt his legacy quitting like that... I am still amazed with only 1 rd to go & him being a puncher he gave up!
Re: Why did we never get a Corrales/Freitas II
cause evey body was caught up on castillo and corrales
plus corrales just better
Re: Why did we never get a Corrales/Freitas II
I wouldnt call Freitas a quitter based on the Chico fight , he just knew he couldnt win .
Same as Chavez , Morales , Duran , Tszyu etc these are all great fighters who have quit in the ring but it should effect their legacy.
Freitas used up too much gas running in the early rounds . Once he began to slow he started getting tagged and had no chance of seeing it through to the finishing line .
Re: Why did we never get a Corrales/Freitas II
I agree he quit took away his pride hard to have rematch when the guy took your pride away and embarrassed you but first one was cracker though.
Re: Why did we never get a Corrales/Freitas II
Well with Freitas style, this herky jerky style, and the pressure with Deigo applies,Corrales would have caught him along the line in the rematch and beat him again.Freitas chin was questionable wasn't it? If Freitas went back to the walk down, power punching machine,he would have more of a chance to beat Chico but I'd still favour Deigo.
Re: Why did we never get a Corrales/Freitas II
We pay fighters to fight not to kill each other, i wish a couple other fighters would have the courage and sense to do what Freitas did maybe some would be around that arent today such as Johnson
Re: Why did we never get a Corrales/Freitas II
And very few fighters have the heart that Morales does, and even he quit in his last fight, and it doesnt tarnish his record or his reputation at all
Re: Why did we never get a Corrales/Freitas II
If I remember he was rocked pretty good, you could see his legs and in his eyes he wasnt ready to continue. I dont think he punked out, he did get off the canvas two times in that fight. If he did continue, I think Corrales would have just knocked him right back to the canvas.
Re: Why did we never get a Corrales/Freitas II
It's so easy to call fighters "quitters" and say "they have no heart" sitting at your table typing on your computer. Unless you have been in their position, and i certainly haven't, it's pathetic to make such statements.

I fought from 1970 - 1972, a fighter should never quit. It's up to the ref or your corner to stop the fight!!!
Re: Why did we never get a Corrales/Freitas II
I gotta say that Corrales put such a hurtin on him that Freitas just didn't want no more.
